Interprofessional Care Defined
In this Blueprint, the Interprofessional Care Steering
Committee (Steering Committee) is using the
following definition for the term interprofessional
care: “Interprofessional care is the provision of
comprehensive health services to patients by
multiple health caregivers who work collaboratively
to deliver quality care within and across settings.”
(Note: See the glossary for this definition and
others.) Figure 1.2, illustrates the interconnected
nature of this approach.

The term health caregivers was also chosen
intentionally for use in this document because it
acknowledges the different types of individuals
who provide care for patients and their families.
It recognizes that all those who provide care,
including regulated and unregulated health
caregivers, as well as the patient, family, friends
and community volunteers, are active members
of the health care team. In order to be inclusive
and successful, all types of health caregivers must
participate in implementing the recommendations
presented here in this Blueprint.
