Danube Gorge at Weltenburg Between rocks and water In the heart of Bavaria, in the district of Kelheim, the broad Bavarian Danube runs through a narrow, stone lane – the Danube Gorge at Weltenburg. During a cruise, guests can experience various rock formations directly on the water and on the 100-metre-high mountain slopes, embedded in glorious mixed forests. Although the inland skipper Renate Schweiger has known the area from an early age, she is still impressed. “What fascinates me most is the journey down from Weltenburg to Kelheim – entering the Danube Gorge. There is a moment when you see a closed layer of rock in front of you. Just before you pass it, you really think you’re going to hit the wall – it’s the most exciting moment for me every time.” Along the way you will find numerous caves as well as truly rare plants and a special animal world. Guided tours by the landscape preservation association teach participants more about it. It is a trip full of sensory impressions: with barrier-free access as well as ramps or lifts, the new “MS Renate” offers people with reduced mobility a carefree boat experience. No matter who comes on board skipper and Bavarian ambassador Renate Schweiger’s boat: “The atmosphere is always good, but by no means loud – just relaxed astonishment”, she says. More unusual stories from Bavaria Bavaria is, quite simply, traditionally different. And that means a wealth of special experiences for holiday makers.
