COEYMANS HOLLOW — Reports
a person trapped in the basement sent
Coeymans Hollow late last Sunday
night.
said.
fully involved and an orange glow visible
in the night sky, Chief Bill Kapusta
of Coeymans Hollow Fire immediately
be dispatched to the scene.
With the reports of the trapped individual,
a second ambulance was also
requested immediately.
“Arriving units found an oversized
two-story, three-bay garage full-involved,”
Kapusta said. “The blazing
garage was attached to a two-story
The garage was fully involved with
to spread to the house.
One handline was used to extinguish
beginning to burn, the second was used
as it was starting to spread, another
was used on the garage and a fourth at
the rear of the structure, according to
Kapusta.
on the scene it was determined the
occupant was able to make it out of the
structure on his own.
The trapped individual was able to
out of the house safely. The man has
shuttle water from a nearby pond to
nesium from the vehicle in the garage
began reacting to the water, creating
bright white light emitting from the
garage.
Overhead power lines also posed a
concern due to their close proximity to
the burning structure.
Crews had a quick knockdown of the
“‘Thank you, you saved our house,’
Those were the words spoken to me
while being hugged this morning,”
RAVENA — Patriotism
was on full display Thursday
when the community
turned out to salute its
veterans.
Originally known as
Armistice Day, the annual
federal holiday now
known as Veterans Day is
meant to honor those who
gave of themselves for the
good of the country.
“On the 11th hour of
the 11th day of the 11th
World War I ended in
1918. Due to the conclusion
of ‘the war to end all
wars,’ Nov. 11 became a
recognized day of celebration,”
said Commander
Scott Kyle of UNITAS
Veterans Memorial Association,
also known as
VFW Post 9594. “The day
was originally declared
Armistice Day about
eight years after the end
of World War I and honored
soldiers and Marines
of that war, but then in
1954, after World War II
and Korea, it was named
Veterans Day to honor
all those who served the
United States.
“Today, we honor all of
our veterans who unselfishly
placed their lives on
hold for something greater
than themselves. Those
men and women were
ordinary people and they
heard the call of duty and
answered it.”
The annual Veterans
Day service was held at
the veterans’ monument
on Main Street, opposite
proudly aloft, musician
and singer Jack Covey
performed several songs
and recited a poem, and
bugler John Vasto concluded
the ceremony.
Covey, a combat Marine
Corps veteran who served
in Vietnam, pointed out
that some veterans have
experienced severe trauma
and need to come to
each other’s aid.
“We are a family and
we need to support each
other,” Covey said. “There
are a horrible number of
veterans that have taken
their own lives. I just
want to do everything in
my power to be able to
encourage and be available
for veterans.”
Korean War veteran
Michael Albano was
among the veterans
attending the service and
said remembering the
made by the troops is critical.
“Veterans Day is
important so people never
forget,” Albano said after
the ceremony. “So many
people have lost so many
children.”
Albano is also past
commander of VFW Post
9594.
“I was fortunate. I was
in the Navy on a ship, but
others were not so fortunate,”
Albano said.
Mayor Bill Misuraca
said following the ceremony
that the community
turning out for events like
this shows veterans did
not serve in vain.
“When veterans see
the public, especially the
younger generation, I
think it shows them that
and welcomed and necessary
for us to be where
we are,” Misuraca said.
“They can see what we
have because of them.”
Veteran Trip Powell,
another VFW past commander,
said people need
to remember that the
can be harsh.
“People need to remem-
-
sequences,” Powell said.
“It’s important as a country
to realize that not
everything is about politics
and that there are
people here who gave of
themselves, at risk of their
lives, for something bigger
than themselves.”
COEYMANS —
Absentee votes have
been counted in the
town of Coeymans race
and the results remain
unchanged from election
night, according to the
Albany County Board of
Elections.
Candidates are now
looking to the future as
they prepare to be sworn
“The results are not
did not certify them, but
there is nothing else left
to count. They are not
going to change,” Republican
Election Commissioner
Rachel Bledi said
Friday.
votes, including canvassing
of the absentee
ballots, was expected at
press time to be conducted
this week to make
according to Bledi.
Coeymans Republicans
made a clean sweep
of the election.
With all the votes tallied,
Zachary Collins
won the open seat on
the Albany County Legto
Kristen Geoghegan’s
848, Bledi said.
Collins, an incumbent
on the town council, will
vacate his current seat
to move to the Legislature.
His replacement is
expected to be appointed
in the coming weeks.
In the town elections,
incumbent Republican
Town Supervisor George
McHugh won re-elec-
Democratic challenger
Two seats on the town
council were up for grabs,
with Republican incumbents
winning re-election
as Dan Baker received
-
crats Yvonne Shackelton
and Sara Pruiksma fell
votes, respectively.
The town clerk position
goes to Republican
defeating Democrat
Sherle Slingerland with
In a move reaching
across the political aisle,
McHugh said Slingerland
will be appointed to
the deputy clerk’s post.
“I’ve known Sherle
since high school and
I’ve always known her to
be honest and hard-working,
which is exactly
what we need in the
think that Laura made a
great decision when she
chose her as a deputy,”
McHugh said. “And it’s
more about capabilities
and less about politics
when it comes to this
administration and the
town of Coeymans.”
Looking ahead to a new
said there are a number
of projects already in the
works and more on the
way.
-
ish the improvements to
-
erfront Park, including
permanent bathrooms
in both parks,” McHugh
said.
Growing broadband
accessibility is also in the
town council’s sights, he
said.
“Expansion of our
broadband internet,
especially in the Coeymans
Hollow and Alcove
areas, shall remain a priority
of the town board
until all residents have
adequate internet service,”
McHugh said.
“We will also continue
to hold the line on taxes
and spending, and pursue
state and federal grants
for our local businesses
and park improvements.”
Town Councilman
Daniel Baker said he
wanted to thank the
voters for participating
in the election and for
continuing to make their
voices heard. The town
has made improvements
under the current administration,
he said.
“The town of Coeymans
has made great
strides in the last two
years under the current
board,” Baker
said. “Holding the line
on taxes, updating the
-
sive plan, hiring a wonderful
and eager grant
writer, updating both
town parks, bringing
in [the] Albany Counpublic
safety and the list
goes on.”
In the future, Baker
is looking to continue
improvements in the
town.
“My vision would be
to continue a balance
between the health and
safety of our residents
and continue our economy
growing,” he said.
“Also, I would like to see
improvements in communication
between the
town and the village of
Ravena. I would like to
see the negativity toned
down because nothing
good comes from this
and it is not very productive.
Hopefully, we will
see some investors want
to set up shops on our
main streets and continue
economic growth here in
Coeymans.”
All of us have dreams
that we would love to
accomplish during our
life. For some people,
their dreams are merely
fantasies and they do
nothing to bring them to
fruition; some take small
steps but never fully
commit; and then some
transform their dreams
into reality.
Many techniques in the
positive thinking world
can help you accomplish
your goals, but let’s not
pretend that hard work
required. If you’re going
to achieve a big goal,
hard work and sacriactivity.
I believe in the power
of positive thinking and
if you’re optimistic,
you’ll always get closer
to your goals than if
you’re pessimistic. I’ve
also learned positivity
alone will not bring
you to the life you want;
you’ll also need to work.
You’ll need to put in the
time, and you’ll need to
burn the midnight oil;
you’ll have to work harder
than expected.
When you’re moving
towards your goals,
inevitably, obstacles will
-
self working many hours
doing things that seemingly
have nothing to do
with your goals. Still,
if you approach every
activity that crosses your
path by doing the best
you can, you’ll become a
person of excellence, and
a person of excellence
will eventually get what
they want.
One of my favorite
speakers, Jim Rohn, said
something profound: “
How hard should you
work? As hard as you
can. Whatever your hand
your might. How high
does a tree grow? As
high as it can!”
Working as hard as
you can requires motivation.
Finding motivation
requires a goal; you’ll
have to know where you
want to go with a clear,
detailed plan on how to
accomplish it.
I haven’t always
accomplished my goals.
I’ve failed a lot, but in
doing so, I’ve found a
pattern in my successes
and failures.
When I have a clear
goal written on a piece
of paper and hanging on
the wall in my bedroom,
I almost always accomplish
it.
I wake up in the
morning, and before I
walk out of my room, I
read the goals, and I’m
reminded of where I’m
headed and how I will
get there. Before I go to
sleep, I read them. It’s
easy to get sidetracked,
and reminding yourself
of your goals several
times a day is necessary.
Norman Vincent Peale
wrote his goals on a card
and put them in his shirt
pocket over his heart. He
read them several times
a day.
If you have a big goal,
you’ll need to think about
it several times a day.
Empty your mind of negativity,
believe with all
your heart that you will
turn your goal into reality.
If you do this, you’ll
side of
you to do whatever it
takes. You’ll wake up
early, you’ll stay up late,
you’ll show up early,
and you’ll be the last
to leave. You’ll excel in
every area of your life.
What if you don’t have
the time?
So many of us think
that if we have a fulltime
job, a family to take
care of and other obligations,
we don’t have
enough time to accomplish
our goals.
What if you only
spend one hour a day
working toward your
goals? It may not seem
like much, but if you
commit yourself to one
hour a day for an entire
year, you’ll have spent
365 hours working on
your dream! For some of
us, that may be all that’s
required.
Try it out. Write your
goal down with a plan
to accomplish it, read it
several times a day, work
hard even if it’s just for
an hour a day, stay committed
and see what happens.
I’m betting you’ll
like the results.
This is a very ancient
Cherokee tale told long
ago and carried forward
to be retold over and over
again.
Its message is one
of courage, faith, trust,
strength and love in the
face of many challenges.
-
ences that “mindset” can
have on us.
The metaphors contained
within the story
are timeless messengers
for all of us to apply to
our own lives in our own
experiences. It is a very
special tale that perhaps
enough to share with family
and friends, especially
the younger people who
face so much adversity as
they grow up these days.
It is my Thanksgiving
wish for all of you to
enjoy as we surround ourselves
with gratitude at
this time of year.
I am paraphrasing this
story as it was told to me.
“THE STORY OF THE
TWO WOLVES”
The story of the two
wolves features two characters:
a grandfather and
his grandson. The grandfather
explains to his
grandson that there are
-
in him, which is a metaphor
for his inner sense
-
sation between two goes
like this:
on in me,” the old man
said. “It’s taking place
between two wolves. One
is evil — these qualities
are anger, envy, sorrow,
regret, greed, arrogance,
self-pity, guilt, resentment,
inferiority, lies,
false pride, superiority
and ego.
“The other wolf
embodies positive emotions
— joy, peace, love,
hope, serenity, humility,
kindness, benevolence,
empathy, generosity,
truth, compassion and
faith.”
-
ing to the death,” the
grandfather said. “The
every one of us.”
The grandson took a
his grandfather had said
about the two wolves.
He then asked his
grandfather, “Which wolf
will win?”
The old Cherokee gave
a simple reply: “The one
you feed!”
This parable serves as
a powerful reminder of
human being must face.
Regardless of the life you
lead or the person you
emotions at some point in
your life.
It’s then important to
learn the lessons contained
within this story
so that you will make the
rightful choice of which
one to feed.
feed the values and choices
that matter most.
One of the most
important lessons contained
within this Native
American story is the fact
that you have more power
over your happiness than
you think you do. In this
world, it’s easy to get
beaten down by your circumstances.
The more we
focus on nourishing those
positive emotions, the
less room there will be
for the negative feelings.
Your mindset has a very
outcome of the situations
that present themselves
during your life.
Feeding the positive
thoughts in your mind
unpleasant emotions and
lift up your spirits and
those around you.
The grandfather’s wise
words remind everyone
that change is possible
and it can be achieved by
focusing one’s thoughts
in the right direction.
“Healthy and Fit” is
a mindset as well and
can be achieved at any
age, regardless of when
you choose to feed that
aspect of yourself with
the thoughts of possibility.
It doesn’t matter when
you begin.
My fondest wishes for
a blessed Thanksgiving
to all.
May this coming holiday
season bring you the
blessings of renewal and
faith that together we can
do anything.
As our spiritual values
become more centered on
God, it’s normal to start
looking forward to our
eternal existence.
For those who are in
Christ, how exciting it is
to know that our heavenly
Father and His Son Jesus,
our loved ones, our new
inheritance, citizenship,
and crowns and rewards
are all a part of our glorious
future.
through this world and
the only thing we will
take with us when we
depart is an account of
how we lived and loved.
How wonderful to know
with endless praise, everlasting
joy, perfect peace
and contentment without
-
ries or sorrow.
It’s true that God loves
everyone, but we will not
enter heaven just because
we are good or deserve
it. We are given eternal
life when we repent, confess,
believe and accept
by faith that within God’s
grace, the blood of Jesus
is the only price that can
pay the ransom for our
sins. Redemption is all
about God’s plan that
was accomplished on the
cross.
Listen to these lyrics
from the song “East to
the West” by Casting
Crowns: “In the arms of
You know just how far
the east is from the west...
from one scarred hand to
the other.”
I cannot imagine a more
optimistic and exciting
thought than going to
heaven and spending an
eternity in God’s presence.
For the Christian,
this promise should be a
wellspring of joy reminding
us that our trials cannot
be compared to the
glory that awaits us. May
we tape this to our bathroom
mirror to remind
us every morning of how
God’s amazing grace provided
a way for us to live
with Him forever.
The fundamentals of
our salvation can be basically
described as God’s
love intervened as a rescue
mission of mercy in
order to save those who
were hopelessly lost.
I Peter 1:3-4 promises,
“Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who according
to His great mercy has
caused us to be born again
to a living hope through
the resurrection of Jesus
Christ from the dead,
to obtain an inheritance
which is imperishable
not fade away, reserved in
heaven for you.”
Our busy schedule is
and for most of us, it’s
exhausting to keep up. As
our daily routines weigh
us down with stress and
frustration, it’s important
to be aware of a much
higher reality.
If we only consider
eternity when we attend
funerals, we are missing
a vital component of our
relationship with God that
can keep us excited and
rejuvenated with His joy
and hope.
I’m giving the eulogy
for my aunt this week,
and it’s truly going to be a
celebration as we rejoice
that her eternal life is just
beginning. She loved the
Lord and always said that
spending time alone with
Him was never intended
to be a last resort but
rather a daily privilege.
She was always happy
and loved to laugh. She
had her share of struggles,
but we can live in a
positive state of mind and
stand strong in our faith
no matter what trials we
are going through as Titus
2:13 reminds us, “Looking
for that blessed hope
and the glorious appearing
of the great God and
our Savior Jesus Christ.”
Do you have a happy
place when facing a crisis?
In Psalm chapter 91,
there is actually a secret
place under the shadow
of the Almighty where
peace and safety. This
awareness of His presence
is a state of mind that can
be attained for those who
enjoy having a personal
relationship with Him.
God desires to abide
in the conscience of His
children and this, in turn,
allows Him to be our Lord
and King. Being attentive
to His voice will not come
without serious determination.
He must be our
highest priority or the distractions
of this life will
slowly turn our eyes away
from His promises.
Many do not realize
that as Christians our allegiance
is to King Jesus
and our citizenship has
been transferred from this
world to the spiritual reality
of His glorious eternal
kingdom. The concept of
abandoning our independence
has everything to
do with trusting His plans
for our lives.
