Working in Switzerland<br />
The police cantonale des<br />
étrangers authorise EU students<br />
to work as from the start of their<br />
studies at <strong>EPFL</strong>. They may work<br />
maximum 15 hours per week<br />
during semesters and full-time<br />
during the academic holiday.<br />
Non-EU students are not allowed<br />
to work during the first six<br />
months of their stay in Switzerland,<br />
after which they may work<br />
maximum 15 hours per week<br />
during semesters and full-time<br />
during the academic holiday.<br />
For all regular paid work, students<br />
holding a B permit must<br />
ask their future employer to fill<br />
in and sign a form for employment<br />
(form 1350 for Canton<br />
Vaud). They should then have<br />
this document endorsed by<br />
the Student Services Hotline.<br />

Failure to comply with these<br />
rules may result in refusal to<br />
extend the residence permit.<br />

Tax at source refunds<br />
Foreign students working<br />
in a company are subject to<br />
social deductions and tax<br />
deducted at source. The<br />
latter can be reclaimed in<br />
December of each year provided<br />
that the student’s annual<br />
income is under CHF 8,000.<br />
For Canton Vaud, applications<br />
for refunds should be submitted<br />
in writing to the address<br />
below, together with :<br />
O employers’ certificates for<br />
the given tax year<br />
O copy of the residence permit<br />
O copy of the <strong>EPFL</strong> registration<br />
certificate<br />
O your bank or postal account<br />
number for reimbursement<br />
