122 Austrian and international galleries from 26 countries celebrate the opening of the
eighth edition of VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary
“With the new name VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary we wanted to emphasize from the
very beginning Viennaʼs role as a trendsetter and a hub for cultural exchange between the
Eastern and Western hemispheres. We are very pleased that our investment could make a
contribution to enhancing a shared cultural and economic development,” says Sergey
Skaterschikov, founder of Next Edition Partners GmbH and majority shareholder of VF
Betriebsgesellschaft mbH. “It was clear from the start that Viennaʼs extremely vibrant
contemporary art scene needs an art fair that corresponds with the international reputation of
the galleries, the exhibition houses, and the artists who reside here. I would like to thank the
entire team and all those who have supported us here in Vienna and around the world. But
above all, I would like to congratulate the two artistic directors Christina Steinbrecher and Vita
Zaman for implementing the vision of VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary in such a short
time frame and developing such an extensive and exciting program,” underlines Dmitry
Aksenov, also a founder of Next Edition Partners GmbH and majority shareholder of VF
Betriebsgesellschaft mbH.
“With 122 galleries from 26 countries, we present a VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary
that does justice to Viennaʼs role as a marketplace and takes decisive steps toward the future.
We are experiencing a convergence of the formerly separated western economic zone with
the increasingly more influential markets of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. We
have successfully won the participation of some of the most prestigious and likewise many of
the most interesting emerging galleries from both hemispheres – a first big step on our path to
position VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary at the pinnacle of international developments
in contemporary art and the global art market,” points out Christina Steinbrecher, artistic
director, satisfied with the eighth edition of VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary.
“In addition to VIENNA QUINTET, a special exhibition about the latest developments in
contemporary art in the five former Soviet republics Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia,
Kazakhstan, and the Ukraine, which are becoming significant protagonists in European
culture, and the project “DIYALOG”: Art from Turkey, which presents galleries and institutions
from another dynamic region, we have developed an ambitious supplementary program that
presents highly topical facets in the production of contemporary art, some for the first time in
Vienna. We have invited fantastic musicians, performers, and lecturers from Berlin, Moscow,
Los Angeles, New York, and many other cities to Vienna to create an inspiring program that
will make VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary the highlight of Viennaʼs contemporary art
calendar. Among others, the program includes the musical duo Tosca, who will present their
new CD, a solidarity demonstration for the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, along with a tribute
to Franz West, one of the most important international representatives of contemporary
Austrian art who just recently passed away,” says Vita Zaman, summarizing the extensive
visitors program of VIENNAFAIR The New Contemporary.
