Edward J. Perkins ’67<br />

Norman, Oklahoma, served as America’s first<br />

African American ambassador to South Africa<br />

and as U.S. ambassador to <strong>the</strong> Commonwealth<br />

of Australia and <strong>the</strong> Republic of Liberia. He<br />

served as director general of <strong>the</strong> Foreign Service<br />

from 1989 to 1992. He is currently executive<br />

director of <strong>the</strong> International Programs Center—<br />

and holds <strong>the</strong> Crowe Chair in Geopolitics—at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University of Oklahoma and was awarded<br />

<strong>the</strong> prestigious Director General’s Cup, which<br />

recognizes a senior officer of <strong>the</strong> Foreign Service<br />

who has made a particularly distinguished contribution<br />

to <strong>the</strong> U.S. State Department through<br />

work with communities and educational institutions<br />

and through non-governmental activities.<br />

The award was presented at <strong>the</strong> 35 th annual<br />

Foreign Affairs Day luncheon, in Washington,<br />

D.C., where Secretary of State Colin Powell<br />

gave <strong>the</strong> keynote address.<br />

William M. Holland ’75<br />

Las Vegas, Nevada, served as a member of <strong>the</strong><br />

U.S. Secret Service while he was a student. After<br />

graduating, he served for 16 years as an officer<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Las Vegas Metro Police Department,<br />

working as a detective in narcotics, vice, and<br />

ANTOINETTE M. ROACH ’96<br />

<strong>the</strong> intelligence bureau and helping to create a<br />

new division for hostage negotiation. He owned<br />

an electrical contracting business from 1980 to<br />

1996 and now serves as a bankruptcy investigator<br />

with <strong>the</strong> U.S. Bankruptcy Court. He is<br />

currently finishing a master’s degree in accounting<br />

at <strong>the</strong> University of Nevada–Las Vegas and<br />

expects to test for his CPA’s license in 2003.<br />

He wrote, “There seems to be a strong need<br />

for fraud investigators in <strong>the</strong> bankruptcy system,<br />

and I hope to respond to that need.”<br />

David A. Hoodenpyle ’76<br />

Tallahassee, Florida, earned his AA from <strong>UMUC</strong><br />

while stationed in Belgium with <strong>the</strong> U.S. Air<br />

Force at NATO headquarters. His experience<br />

<strong>the</strong>re encouraged him to complete his bachelor’s<br />

degree, after which he returned to civilian<br />

life as a Unisys/Burroughs computer salesman.<br />

He currently works as a technology reseller.<br />

William G. Stengle ’81 & ’89<br />

Gainesville, Florida, recently joined ASC, Inc.,<br />

as support coordinator for developmentally<br />

disabled adults and children. He wrote, “My<br />

[<strong>UMUC</strong>] degrees were instrumental in [my<br />

rise] to <strong>the</strong> rank of master sergeant, U.S. Air<br />

Takoma Park, Maryland, has owned and operated Copperfield Public Relations<br />

in Washington, D.C., for <strong>the</strong> past two years. She brings more than seven years<br />

of communication experience to <strong>the</strong> job, with expertise in communication and<br />

marketing strategy, media relations, and grassroots outreach campaigns.<br />

Prior to launching Copperfield, Roach worked for Cohn & Wolfe Public<br />

Relations in San Francisco, California, managing and servicing client projects<br />

for Deloitte Consulting, MetFabCity.com (Praxair), Digital 4Sight, and Sony.<br />

Before that, she worked for <strong>the</strong> Army Distaff Foundation in Washington, D.C.,<br />

where she provided senior marketing, fundraising, and public relations counsel.<br />

She began her public relations career at Ruder Finn Public Relations in<br />

Washington, D.C., where she worked with <strong>the</strong> firm’s environmental, institutional,<br />

and corporate-practice clients, including <strong>the</strong> Global Climate Coalition,<br />

Discovery Communications, Inc., and <strong>the</strong> Department of Housing and Urban<br />

Development.<br />

Roach serves as a young benefactor board member of <strong>the</strong> Boys and Girls Clubs<br />

of Greater Washington, and has taught English to adults in Japan and to high<br />

school students in Hyattsville, Maryland.<br />

Force, prior to my 1992 retirement, and my<br />

[subsequent move] to a second career as a child<br />

abuse investigator for <strong>the</strong> state of Florida. I<br />

retired again in June 2002 and started a third<br />

career, this one with ASC. Without a degree,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are very limited options if you want to<br />

work in <strong>the</strong> public sector or for companies<br />

subcontracted by <strong>the</strong> state. The market is<br />

flooded and <strong>the</strong> degrees make <strong>the</strong> difference<br />

between getting <strong>the</strong> interview and not. <strong>UMUC</strong><br />

gave me a strong foundation for all three<br />

careers!”<br />

Jim Koepke ’82<br />

Bloomington, Minnesota, wrote Adventures in<br />

a Mental Health Center (PublishAmerica, Inc.,<br />

2002), a humorous, behind-<strong>the</strong>-scenes look at<br />

what really goes on in a mental health center.<br />

Antonio Ojeda ’85<br />

Killeen, Texas, wrote, “[<strong>UMUC</strong>] provided me<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunity to continue my studies while<br />

pursuing a full-time military career.”<br />

Carol J. Franzen ’86<br />

Newport News, Virginia, retired from <strong>the</strong> Air<br />

National Guard and is now an independent<br />

certified facilitator with Life Success Productions<br />

specializing in personal development seminars.<br />

Philippe Steele ’86<br />

Noblesville, Indiana, joined <strong>the</strong> U.S. Army<br />

and fought in Operation Desert Storm with <strong>the</strong><br />

2 nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. After completing<br />

his enlistment, he served for several<br />

years as a pay specialist at Ft. Benjamin<br />

Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has<br />

since completed both his bachelor’s degree and<br />

MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. He<br />

wrote, “My fondest memory as a student<br />

would have to be <strong>the</strong> good times shared with<br />

my friends and o<strong>the</strong>r students and faculty at<br />

<strong>the</strong> student union building and downtown at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Oktoberfest and Malthaser’s Beer Hall.”<br />

Nancy A. Pellone ’87<br />

St. Petersburg, Florida, currently works as a<br />

management analyst in <strong>the</strong> office of <strong>the</strong> director<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Department of Veteran Affairs. She was<br />

recently chosen to participate in <strong>the</strong> Leadership<br />

Enhancement and Advancement Development<br />

program, which is devoted to developing<br />

future leaders.<br />
