MANAGER’S NOTES
Unitedites will not need reminding that it
has been almost two months since our
last home fixture so, on behalf of
everyone associated with the club, I’d like to
welcome everyone back to the Lane.
The frustration felt by us all with regards to the
postponed league fixtures, through no fault of
our own, has been matched this week with the
results at both Derby and Preston.
I’m not going to dwell on those games, but
we must learn from every experience and that
has been amongst the thinking at Shirecliffe
this week. At Preston we threw it away in the
last 20 minutes, undoing so much good work at
both ends of the pitch. We have the quality and
experience to manage the game better – as
we did at Fulham – and should have been out
of sight.
We look forward, though, we’ve had a couple
of bright sessions as we prepare for today and it
is worth reiterating that we are only just past the
halfway stage in the season, we’ve got games
in hand and there’s plenty to play for, it goes
without saying that we need to be better, and we
are working on that.
With it being January, there’s a lot of talk about
the transfer window, and as much as there is
work going on behind the scenes, I’m not one for
talking about deals until they are completed.
Earlier in the season, the Board and myself
set out the strategy for the club in the longterm
and each transfer window will play a part
in that. We’ve freed up a little space with two
goalkeepers departing this month and we are
fully expecting further activity, in and out. In
my opinion, January is not a good window, it is
unpredictable, and this year even more so with
the threat of Covid still in the air.
Of course, we would benefit from signings, but
players coming back from illness and injury will
improve the squad, we have undoubted quality
in our ranks. We will not just make signings for
the sake of it, we want good players to improve
us in terms of style of play, age, potential to
develop and as much as we have targeted
priority areas, we are willing to be patient to
ensure we get the right people.
The strategy, mentioned earlier, also involves
sustainability and to that end the development
of players and staff is important. When taking
over this role I brought in Stuart McCall and Jack
Lester, and we still fully intend to make another
appointment at first team level.
The Academy, though, is also a vital cog for
this club and it has been great to be involved in
pushing that area forward recently with some
strategic changes.
Over the past couple of years, Jack has put
together a fantastic coaching team and the new
appointments of Del Geary, Micky Collins and
the experienced Aidy Boothroyd, who will work
with the coaches in a mentor role, to supplement
some fantastic people we already have in the
club, emphasises that we want to be known as
one the best developers of young players.
In 2021 we had a total of nine youngsters
making their senior debuts after coming
through the youth ranks. Because of that
and because we’ve got good staffing in the
Academy, we’re developing a reputation where
we can attract players.
We can definitely offer development and
opportunity, there’s plenty come through our
Academy over the years, and we want more to
follow. One of our priorities is investing in what
we’ve already got and making it better and I
believe we are on the right track.
Enjoy the game
PLAYER TALK
× DREAM COME TRUE FOR KYRON
Youngster Kyron
Gordon described his
recent outing for the
Blades as a ‘dream come true’
after starting the recent FA
Cup tie against Wolves.
The boyhood Blade, who
made two appearances in
the League Cup earlier this
season, was recalled from
a loan spell at Conference
North side Boston United,
and quickly found himself
confronting Premier League
regulars in front of 27,000 fans.
Whilst enjoying a
competitive debut in August,
the FA Cup clash against a
very strong Wolves outfit
was a major step up for the
defender, who had already
starred alongside his brother
Tyler Smith before the latter’s
departure to Hull City.
Kyron explained his entire
family were ‘proud’ after
witnessing his composed
display in the heart of a threeman
defence at Molineux.
He remarked: “It was a
dream come true. I made my
debut with my brother (Tyler
Smith) who is also a Blade,
and he was watching. The
family are so proud. In my
family group chat, my auntie
was crying. This is what I have
dreamed of since coming as
a fan aged 7, I can’t really put
it into words. All my friends
from school are Blades,
some of them made the trip.
All my family are Blades, so it
can’t get any better than this
for me really.”
The 19-year-old has made
excellent progress at U23 level
under Paul Heckingbottom,
and also insisted his recent
stint at Boston has also
brought him on as a player.
He added: “The Boston loan
has really helped me because
I am playing men’s football
and you have to step up, you
will get found out if you are
just quiet and timid in that
environment - especially as a
centre-back.
“The Conference North is
a very tough league, tougher
than some of the higher
leagues to be honest, so it
is a great experience for a
young centre-back like myself
R Kyron impresses at Molineux
to go in there and play. The
lads were great with me and
playing in front of a good
crowd in a nice new stadium,
it was good for me.”
Kyron is open as to
what happens next in
his development, but
revealed he’d love another
opportunity to start for the
Blades.
He added: “I am always
pushing. If I play again, I want
to be better than Wolves. I
always want more. If there
is another chance, I’ll do
everything I can to take it. I
am a Sheffield United fan, so I
would love to play for United
rather than go out on loan,
but obviously circumstances
can change.”
× ALL TO PLAY FOR – BASH
Whilst not shying away
from the
disappointment of
Tuesday night’s ending at
Preston, Chris Basham insists
there’s still everything to play
for as the Blades look to kick
on again.
After a disruptive Christmas
and New Year due to
postponements, United looked
set to return to winning ways
after a dominant first-half
showing at Deepdale.
As good as Paul
Heckingbottom’s side were for
an hour, United let a two-goal
lead slip late on, much to the
frustration of Chris and his
team-mates.
But the north east native says
that despite the setback, there
is still almost half-a-season in
front of the club as United look
to be positive ahead of today’s
hosting of Luton.
He said: “We were so
comfortable, playing some
really good stuff - probably
the best we have played for a
while.
“We proved we can be
brilliant for 60-70 minutes but
then we get hit with a sucker
punch, and another, and we
walk off with one point instead
of three.
“We need to focus on
winning games of football again
because there’s still virtually
half-a-season to play for. We
need to put things right on
the training ground and come
R Chris in action at Deepdale on Tuesday night
Saturday at home to Luton.”
Despite the setback, the
former Bolton and Blackpool
ace insists there is a
determination to go again as
United look to recreate the
form which saw a run of five
games unbeaten before the
untimely fixture impasse.
He continued: “We were on
a great roll when the manager
took over. We’ve had a few
missed weeks, but we were still
training and working hard. It’s
all about having the ability to
see out a game and we didn’t
do it.
“That’s why we are hurting.
For 70 minutes we were
comfortable, we were driving
forward with the ball, moving
it well, our combinations were
good, and we missed some
good chances. They also
missed some good chances
which is something we need to
look at. We felt positive though,
the manager instructed us to
stay positive at half-time.
“We played some great stuff
at times but that’s not the be
all and end all. It’s a 90-minute
game. We’re disappointed with
the last 20 minutes; we didn’t
see the game out. We should
have slowed ourselves down.”
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
RE LUNCHES FROM
FEBRUARY 2022
Due to increased costs, Compass
have informed us that the cost of
lunches at our monthly meetings
in the Platinum Suite will rise from
£16.50 to £17.00 from February 2022.
Also from February 2022, the
Committee have decided to introduce
a £10 charge for anyone who has
booked a lunch and subsequently does
not attend. Since August 2021 the
Committee has been able to absorb
these costs but to continue to hold the
lunches and provide entertainment, the
introduction of this fee is necessary.
A reminder that a lunch booking
has to be made seven days prior to
the lunch date either by email (info@
seniorblades.com) or phone (01335
664560).
If you make a booking and
subsequently have to cancel before
the seven-day booking deadline, then
you will not be required to pay this £10
cancellation fee.
The lunch on 8th February 2022 will
hopefully go ahead as planned, so your
booking must be made by 1st February
2022. The entertainment that day will
be Danielle Grace Williams, who is an
award-winning international singing star.
THE BIG INTERVIEW
I liman Ndiaye
PLAYER
IN FOCUS
The back story of Iliman Ndiaye’s
career is nearly as spectacular as his
fine individual effort that saw United
beat Marco Silva’s Fulham at Craven Cottage
last month.
It’s been a meteoric rise to prominence
for the 21-year-old, who was born in France
and spent time in Senegal, prior to moving to
England and signing for Boreham Wood.
His unquestionable talent was spotted by
United before he’d kicked a ball in anger for the
National League outfit and having committed
his long-term future by signing a new deal until
the summer of 2024, United’s number 29 is
determined to take the second tier by storm in
2022, insisting there is more to come from him.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

12 UTB
A debut at Leicester City last
March revealed one of United’s most
precious gems and Iliman wasted
little time in enhancing his reputation
when handed his full debut against
Peterborough United in the Sky Bet
Championship in September. A stint
in the U23s has kept him sharp and
following a recall to the starting XI by
recently appointed football manager
Paul Heckingbottom, he cut through
Tim Ream and Tosin Adarabioyo like
a knife through butter to give United a
notable success against Fulham.
Denied more opportunities to
build on his success by a raft of
postponements, Iliman was back in the
starting 11 for last weekend’s defeat
against Derby and Tuesday’s draw at
Preston, and he’s looking to kick on
again as this quiet and unassuming
character, on or off camera, hopes to
play an instrumental role as United
look to make up for lost time.
⊲ UTB: We’re now into 2022, how
do you reflect on what has been a
whirlwind last 10 months or so?
⊲ IN: “I have to say looking back, it
has been a special year for me. There
has been a lot of hard work and it
has been fantastic to see how things
have taken off following my debut as
a sub in the Premier League. I have
been playing now fairly regularly in the
Championship, and during this time I
feel like I have improved greatly, and
I have worked really hard to get to
where I am now. This is just the start,
of course, I still have a long way to go.”
⊲ UTB: You seemed to adapt to life
in the first team so quickly, did it
surprise you how swiftly you made
the adjustment?
⊲ IN: “I suppose you don’t really know
for sure until you are out there playing,
but I felt confident I would adjust. I
have to say my team-mates have been
fantastic, and they have made the
transition from U23s to first team much
easier for me.”
“I HAVE TO SAY LOOKING BACK,
IT HAS BEEN A SPECIAL YEAR
FOR ME. THERE HAS BEEN A
LOT OF HARD WORK AND IT
HAS BEEN FANTASTIC TO SEE
HOW THINGS HAVE TAKEN OFF
FOLLOWING MY DEBUT AS A
SUB IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE”
⊲ UTB: At the time of writing, you
have played 18 senior games for
United. Has life changed much for
you in the last 10 months?
⊲ IN: “It hasn’t really changed much; I
am still the same. My targets are still
the same as they were before, my
focus hasn’t changed in terms of my
end goals. I am still working towards
them. Maybe there has been some
small changes in terms of away from
the field, but on the football side I am
still determined to improve and keep
working as hard as possible. I know
what it takes to stay in the team, and
what standards I need to hit on a daily
basis. It’s all about staying focused
and working as hard as possible.”
⊲ UTB: Looking back on the day
when your career really took off.
Peterborough at home back in
September, you scored two goals on
your first league start. How do you
look back on that experience?
⊲ IN: “I have to say I’ve watched
the game back a few times. I have
watched it before other games
because it is good to see how I
played, and the aim then is to go out
and try and do the same because that
was a day where a lot went right for
me. It’s a good target to try and reach
and a reminder of what I am capable
of. It was a great day for me, and I
remember many snippets from the
afternoon. The second goal, I didn’t
even know I’d scored initially because
I hit the deck with cramp. When I
eventually stood up, I saw and heard
all the fans clapping and cheering
and then when I went off, I received a
tremendous ovation. Now, I can hear
them making songs from my name, so I
have to say I am enjoying that!”
“FOR ME, IT DOESN’T MATTER
WHAT THE GAME IS, THE MINDSET
DOESN’T CHANGE. YOU CAN PUT ME
IN ANY TEAM, IN ANY AGE GROUP,
AND I’LL TREAT IT THE SAME.
I JUST LOVE PLAYING FOOTBALL”
⊲ UTB: We know from previous
interviews with you just how
important your family has been
to your career path. They must all
be proud to see how well you are
progressing?
⊲ IN: “My missus has been coming
to the games with my baby, and they
have been enjoying the experience.
My parents live in London, so they
have been watching from afar when
the opportunity has presented itself.
As I speak now, they haven’t been
able to see me play in person as yet,
but I know they are really proud. We
always talk after all of the games, and
they want to know how I’ve done, and
what I need to improve on. They just
try and be there for me. They are both
really proud. My dad used to take me
to training when I was younger every
day, and he didn’t miss a game when
I was back in France. He’s played his
major role now, but whenever he talks
to me, he still helps so he and my mum
have been fantastic for me.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

UTB 15
⊲ UTB: Before your recent elevation
back into the first team, you played a
couple of games for the U23s. How
important have these games been?
Your application has been noted by
pundits here, both at 23 and senior
level, what does that say about your
approach to the games?
⊲ IN: “The U23 games I’ve played in
have been really beneficial in terms
of me staying driven and fit, so that
when the opportunity arises, like it did
against Fulham, I am in the best shape
to hit the ground running. I am training
hard to try and show what I can do,
and if the chance presents itself, like
at Fulham, I need to be ready to take
that opportunity. For me, it doesn’t
matter what the game is, the mindset
doesn’t change. You can put me in
any team, in any age group, and I’ll
treat it the same. I just love playing
football. I’ll always work hard to prove
where I should be is in the first team,
that’s how I see it, playing any game
is a positive for me. Playing well for
the U23s is the only way to get back
playing in the first team, and I have no
issue with that.”
⊲ UTB: How influential has Paul
Heckingbottom been to your rise?
And not just him but other coaches
and managers along the way?
⊲ IN: “I am grateful for all the
opportunities coaches and managers
have given me. I have been fortunate
to work with some top coaches here,
and they have all given me a boost. I
will always be grateful to the current
boss for giving me the guidance and
then a Premier League debut. I’m also
thankful to Slavisa because he gave me
a run in the first team this season. With
Paul Heckingbottom back in charge,
he has again shown faith in me, and I
am determined to repay him because I
have a lot to be thankful to him for.”
⊲ UTB: We know you have also
mentioned Jack Lester’s influence in
previous interviews. How good has
it been working with him again? How
much work did you do with him in the
past?
⊲ IN: “Before the current boss took
over, there wasn’t much individual
work with the strikers, it was more
aligned to the whole team which was
fine. But now with Jack coming in, he’ll
do a lot of work with the strikers, and
I saw him do this a lot with the U23s.
I felt like I needed that again, so to
be working with Jack again has been
great. I changed into more of a forward
player under Paul Heckingbottom and
Jack Lester. I was a number 10, and
I still play that role to a degree, but
when the manager came in, he felt I
was more suited to playing up as a
two. I’ve enjoyed the role, but I know
I need to score a few more goals.
When I was playing in midfield I would
be deep asking for the ball from the
‘keeper and then dribble forward! Now
I’m a forward player, I understand I
don’t need to do that anymore, and
that’s part of my development under
the coaches here.”
⊲ UTB: So, we have covered how
much of an influence the coaches
have been, but what about the
players? Who has helped guide you in
the first team?
⊲ IN: “I wouldn’t like to pick one
out, they have all been great to be
honest. From the day I first arrived
in the first team, I was given all the
encouragement I needed from them.
I trained quite a bit with the first team
before I played, and they were all
helpful in that respect. We have some
great lads here, they really believed
in me, and they are still giving me lots
of help and advice now. It’s easy to
look up to someone like Billy, because
what he has done has been incredible.
But we also have Didzy who is a top
player, and some of the younger lads
like Oli McBurnie - I try and take some
little things from all the lads really.”
⊲ UTB: One player you struck up an
instant partnership with was Morgan
Gibbs-White. Is it true that the initial
link up was mainly instinctive?
⊲ IN: “I’d only trained once with
Morgan before we played in the first
team together. We had a training
match before then and we linked
up well. We are both the same age
and have a similar style technique
wise, so it has just resulted in a good
understanding which happened quite
quickly, and we have worked on it
since.”
⊲ UTB: Now onto Fulham…Talk us
through ‘that’ goal, your entry for goal
of the season?
⊲ IN: “It is a goal that I’ll never stop
watching, just like the Peterborough
game! I just remember picking the ball
up and knowing I’d got the run on their
retreating midfielder. I advanced over
the halfway line and was hitting top
speed as both their defenders backed
off and allowed me space. I had
options, but as I approached the edge
of the area there was still nobody
wanting to make a challenge on me,
so I measured my shot on my left foot
and thankfully it curled into the bottom
corner.”
⊲ UTB: The win at Fulham was a
major boost, then the postponements
followed. Despite the defeat at Derby
and late goal conceded at Preston,
is there still a belief that anything is
possible during the second half of the
season?
⊲ IN: “There’s a long way to go and we
still feel that the top six is very realistic.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

UTB 17
Especially with the squad we have
here, if we can keep everyone fit, then
we have a great chance. We have a
lot of hard work ahead, and a lot of
games to fit in, but I just feel that there
is so much more that we can achieve.
We’ve had a good start under the
new manager, but we need to keep
it moving forward. The manager and
the staff have been brilliant, training
has been great, and the group is all
together, and it just feels like there is
more energy going into the games.
Training is very intense, everyone is
at it from start-to-finish, so it is really
enjoyable at the moment, we need to
keep it going.”
⊲ UTB: How good does it feel to
just be back playing again? You
came back on fire at Fulham, but the
postponements must have been a
frustration?
⊲ IN: “It felt so good to be back in
the team and show people what I
could do at Fulham. It is still a new
beginning at the football club under
Paul Heckingbottom and I’m sure
the only way is up from now on. The
postponed matches over Christmas
were really disappointing but it was
out of our hands and we just have to
get on with it now. I’m happy we’re
back playing and being in the first
team is what I’ve always wanted. I just
want to keep improving, scoring goals,
getting assists and helping the team
climb the table. We’ve returned to a
style and intensity this group knows
brings success and we’ve just got to
keep focused and keep pushing each
other on.”
⊲ IN: “I’d like to score more goals. I
got the two against Peterborough and
the goal against Fulham, but I would
like more. I’ve had opportunities, I
just need to be a little more clinical
with them. If I want to stay in the
team, I need to score goals so that is
something I am working on.”
⊲ UTB: Finally, you’ve been around
Sheffield for nearly two years now,
how are you finding life in the Steel
City?
⊲ IN: “I went back to London last
month and I was told I was picking up
the Yorkshire accent a little! I’ve lived
here for nearly two years now, but I’ve
been so focused that I haven’t really
taken the opportunity to have a good
look around. When I get the chance
of some down time, naturally I want to
see my family and in between that I am
playing, training and travelling. Maybe
this is something I need to do in the
future, but I have to say I am settled
here and love living in Sheffield.”
⊲ UTB: We’re still only a few weeks
into 2022, how about some New
Year resolutions? What area
of your game would you like to
improve the most?

United recently maintained
the tradition of spreading
festive cheer to those most in
need across the city, despite
not been able to visit local
hospitals, hospices and other
The Blades, with the backing
of long-standing club sponsor
send numerous gifts to Weston
of vans before sending them
UNDER-18s UPDATE
Since our last matchday edition of UTB,
The Blades produced another fine win
against Peterborough United with Louie Marsh,
Peck was on target again at Bramall Lane as
United advanced to the fourth round of the FA
ensuring the match went to penalties but United
prevailed in the shootout.
The success against the Lions earned United
a crack at Everton in the next round, and the
Blades produced a notable display in a 2-1
defeat. Sai Sachdev headed in for United late
on.
In Memoriam...
GLYN JONES
Sheffield United is saddened
to hear of the recent passing of
former player Glyn Jones.
Born in Rotherham on April 8th,
1936, Glyn made 31 appearances
for the club, scoring four goals,
before moving on to Rotherham
United and Mansfield Town.
Glyn was an England Youth
international, signed by Reg
Freeman, and made his first team
debut for the Blades in a match
against Spurs at White Hart Lane
when the Blades were relegated.
A stylish player, he made 97
Football League appearances
before moving into non-league
football.
The thoughts and condolences
of all at Sheffield United FC are
15 years ago, I received
correspondence, initially from
a teacher in Hong Kong, who
followed my career and was
possibly a fan.
“He told the story to the
school kids and they formed
a fan club called Currie Boyz,
which is still going strong.
of the club, as well as the
Sheffield community, and is
fully deserving of the MBE in
the opinion of those who are
involved with him at Bramall
Lane. Graham works tirelessly
for the benefit of others and
his support of the football club
has been unwavering.”
“Every Christmas and New
send cards wishing me Merry
Christmas and Happy Birthday
– it really is a nice touch.
“I am very privileged and
proud they still think of me,
especially at my age!”
HAPPY
RETIREMENT
GEORGE
Everyone at Sheffield United
would like to wish programme
seller George Tams a very
happy retirement after he has
decided to hang up his yellow
jacket.
After 25 years working for
the Blades, George initially
started out as a 50/50 ticket
seller before joining the
programme team where he
has become a familiar face to
supporters on the corner of
John Street.
We’re sure George’s many
regulars will miss his presence
and also his wind ups! He’ll still
be a regular at Bramall Lane as
he looks forward to continuing
to support United from his seat
on the Kop.
All the best George!
× THE STORY: United recorded a crucial win on the road after Jayden Bogle’s second-half strike
earned the Blades a 1-0 victory over Reading. Bogle expertly finished David McGoldrick’s deep
cross to win a tight game for the Blades who staved off a fightback from the hosts late on. There
was concern for John Fleck when the midfielder collapsed off the ball, but there was good news
the following day when he was discharged from the local hospital.
Fables & Folklore
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable account of following the Blades
always provides a talking point as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
T C Tales...
It won’t have escaped the notice of
anyone recently that home games have
been few and far between over the last
month or so!
As one postponement followed another over
Christmas into the New Year, it also ensured
my programme copy, specific to the January 1st
fixture with Middlesbrough, wouldn’t see the
light of day – at least until now!
As we’re still in the early throngs of January,
I will still reflect on New Year, and New Year’s
Eve in particular when for many years my annual
contact lost remained the same. When Mum
was still with us and good, that was always the
first call after midnight to wish her all the best.
As she got older, she had gone to bed earlier
and earlier, so the calls matched the time she
went to the land of nod. That’s one call I wish
I could still make. There is many a time when
something important has happened at home
and at work that I still think I will give her a bell,
then realise I can’t.
Our Kid is another, but he is now following the
same road and getting out of the way nice and
early. I recall some great New Year’s Eve nights
out with him down at the Manchester Hotel over
the years that went on as long as you wanted
them to and ended up either with a lift home
from the wonderful landlady back then, Linda
Turner, or a kip on the pub floor followed by a
bacon sarnie or three in the morning. A lift to
R TC’s book is still available to buy now
the Lane for the game or at least to where the
coach was picking you up to get to wherever
we were playing would follow - happy days!
The kids are also on the call list, but then,
next in order - and it was the same again
this year - is always Tony Currie. The text will
also wish him a very happy birthday, and it’s
something I never forget to do. I mean, he must
have one of the easiest birthdays to remember
of any of my colleagues or friends, New Year’s
Day is pretty easy to remember, even for me!
When I first came to work at the club, I
struggled a bit with talking to him. Not that he
wasn’t always sociable, far from it. It was the
Blades thing. Although as a nipper I saw him
play countless times, I wasn’t old enough to
understand what I was watching or how good
he was. There were many times my dad would
point to players and tell me how lucky I was
to see some great names gracing the Bramall
Lane pitch alongside our fabled no 10, but I was
always more intent on chasing around the Kop
with mates between the upper and lower tiers,
getting a hot sausage roll and Bovril or staring
at the Supporters Club clock on the Bramall
Lane stand next to the ‘I told ‘em Oldham’ and
‘Head for Housley’s’ signs waiting for it to get
to the end of the match! How little I knew back
then and how little I appreciated just how lucky
I was. Dad said TC was the best, up there with
Hagan for him, and Dad knew a thing or two
about football in my view.
I suppose that, in my mid-50s, I am part of
the youngest generation around who saw TC
play that has a memory of it. This year will be
an incredible 54 years since he joined us from
Watford (the year I was born) and that is truly
incredible. That said, the mark he left on the
club leaves all Blades in no doubt of his sheer
quality and iconic status, and that’s what always
made it hard for me at first. You found yourself
in the presence of United royalty whilst just
getting a brew in the tea room and, for any
lifelong Blade of a certain age, that could be
a hard thing. I should never have worried. TC
has always been brilliant with me and, over
the years that have elapsed in between, has
become a close friend to me and the family.
People always expect him to be like he was
on the pitch - an outward going flamboyant
showman - and thereby hangs the problem.
Once TC trusts and knows you, you have a
different person. One of the warmest, funniest
R Admiring the scene from his own stand back in 2018
and kindest person you could ever wish to
know, but you have to earn that side of him
as the real Tony is shy, introverted and still,
to an extent, struggles with the attention that
his name brings around the game and in S2 in
particular. I recall being down at Cardiff for the
play-off final against Wolves and how shocked
he was at the time it took him and Mrs. TC to
walk from the staff hotel to the stadium - he was
quite bewildered by it all and still is to a certain
extent.
I hope that many of you received a copy of
his autobiography, Imperfect 10, in your red and
white stockings over Christmas – written with
former colleague Andy Pack, it’s a cracking
look at the life of a Blades legend from its very
beginnings to more or less the present day with
some great pictures in the middle as well - many
of them I have never seen before. He talks
honestly about many things, the most sobering
being his battles with the black dog known as
depression - something I know only too well
about from experience and also something
that, as a colleague, we have shared many
times over the years. The genuinely harrowing
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

UTB 37
account of his inability to deal with the end of
his football career added to the implosion of
his first marriage at the same time and you do
genuinely get a chance to see a little bit of the
man behind the mask, as it were.
There are many tales he has shared with
me that, for one reason and another, did not
make it into the book. It must be hard sat down
recounting a life that has seen so much its
untrue. He always told me that, after not seeing
anything of his perennially absent father for a
number of years, he was making his way into
the Players’ Entrance at Wembley Stadium when
a voice shouted him. As Tony turned around, he
saw his father there, beckoning him over. Noone
could have blamed him for just ignoring him
and walking away but being TC, he went across.
What do you think Mr. Currie senior wanted?
Proudly wish his son all the best? Shake his
hand and apologise for not being there for
him? No, he was after a couple of tickets for the
game. TC rightly walked away.
Around the time of his testimonial in 1986, it
was suggested by the committee that, to add
to the A list for the team to play against the
Blades legends, Rod Stewart would be a great
pull for the crowds. It turned out that Rod was
playing at Wembley, not too far from TC’s mum’s
place where he was again living. Fighting the
shyness and insecurities, on the day of the gig
he made his way to the famous ground and,
ironically waited at the Players’ Entrance he
had once breezed through as a player for his
country and also with the captain’s armband
for QPR in a FA Cup final. He had a handwritten
letter introducing himself, the testimonial, and a
polite plea for him to turn out alongside Dennis
Waterman and many other showbiz friends in
the game. Unsurprisingly, no-one went looking
for Rod. The letter was taken away to be given
to him. Now, Rod, a known footy fan, would
have been more than aware of the talents of TC,
but I reckon it’s a fair bet the letter was never
delivered. Leastways he didn’t get a reply.
After hanging up his boots, one of the first
jobs he had was running mini soccer camps
for Haven Leisure in Devon and Cornwall over
the summer. Armed with a Fiat Panda, a couple
of balls and a handful of cones, he drove from
site-to-site doing a smaller version, I suppose,
of what would become his Football in the
Community role. His first, up on the Towans in
Hayle, was attended by one lad whose dad was
a Blade and dragged him there. Less than two
years from the roar of Wembley in a showpiece
game to one kid in a Blades shirt in the Cornish
sun. Life can be cruel at times.
Finally, I recall cutting through the sponsor
lounge early one evening where he was
clearing up after a party. Adults stood around
chatting and kids ran around the room as, in the
midst of it all, arguably one of our greatest sons
shovelled the debris of the day into a black bin
bag. As I dodged my way through, he looked at
me, sighed and said: “I used to play for England,
you know…”
If you haven’t read the book, get a copy. You
will never know him well enough to understand,
but it paints a good picture of what made TC
and what can sometimes lurk behind the facade
of a very public face. To many of us at Bramall
Lane, he is our mate, one of us and a vital part
of the SUFC fabled ‘family’. The work he does
is done quietly and without publicity. Phoning
those needing a boost for a chinwag, visiting
hospitals and always trying to make a difference
as an ambassador for the club he loves.
He was also voted the greatest player ever
to represent the club. You can’t really argue
with that.
‘TOGETHER AT EVERY
STEP’ PARTNERSHIP
RAISES ALMOST
£10,000 FOR
WESTON PARK
CANCER CHARITY
The launch of a football
season-long partnership
between Barnsley and the
Blades has raised a near fivefigure
sum for Weston Park
Cancer Charity.
The ‘Together At Every Step’
partnership sees the two clubs
put regional football rivalries to
one side in support of Weston
Park Cancer Charity for the
2021-22 football season.
Following a unique
press conference-style
announcement of the new
partnership at Weston Park
Cancer Support in Sheffield,
almost £10,000 was raised
by the initiative’s launch as
the clubs played each other
in the SkyBet Championship
at Oakwell.
Among the main
contributors to the impressive
total were generous donations
by fans of both clubs, who
gave thousands of pounds
via a bucket collection
outside Oakwell on the day
of the game.
Barnsley-based company,
BAPP Industrial Supplies
– a long-term Weston Park
Cancer Charity supporter –
also provided a four-figure
donation to match on-the-day
fundraising, bringing the total
raised by the event to more
than £9,800.
R Barnsley skipper Cauley Woodrow and Blades club captain, Billy Sharp
A joint fundraising page
was set-up to enable fans of
both clubs to come together
to support Weston Park,
with funds also generously
pledged by fans, organisations
and Weston Park supporters
through auctions, raffles
and donations on the day
of the game.
Dave McCarthy, United’s
head of operations, said:
“We were excited to join
with Barnsley FC to form
the Together At Every Step
partnership and unite behind
such a great cause. Cancer will
sadly touch the lives of all of
us, either directly or indirectly,
so we want to do our bit to
help those affected by it.
“We’ve proudly supported
Weston Park for more than
25 years, and by joining with
Barnsley for the 2021-22
season, we aim to continue
the momentum built by a
successful launch.
“A huge well done
to everyone who has
contributed to its success so
far – we look forward to the
‘return fixture’ at Bramall Lane
in March, as well as countless
other activities and events
this season.”
Funds raised by the
Together At Every Step
partnership will make a
‘huge impact’ as Weston
Park Cancer Charity aims
to highlight the specialist
support it provides for
young people facing cancer
this Christmas.
FIRST LAST
This season PAUL HOLLAND picks out a Blade with
a connection to our opponents looking back on their
first and last outing for the red and white wizards...
Canadian international Paul
Peschisolido enjoyed two spells at
Bramall Lane, firstly on loan from
Fulham before, eventually, joining on a
permanent basis. He previously had two spells
at Birmingham City, as well as plying his trade at
Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion before
moving to Craven Cottage. After a spell at QPR
on loan, he moved to Bramall Lane for three
months in January 2001, scoring twice in five
games. He later played for Norwich, again on
loan, before returning to United in a £250,000
deal in July 2001. He went on to make 97
appearances in all competitions and scored 21
goals – including a hat-trick at Gillingham in
January 2004.
He made his name as an impact substitute
and during the 2002-03 season was influential
in scoring important winners as United
reached the semi-finals of both domestic cup
competitions as well as reaching the play-off
final. He also scored in the famous 4-3 victory
over Nottingham Forest in the play-off semifinal.
In March 2004, he joined Derby County in a
swap deal that involved Izale McLeod moving
to Bramall Lane on loan. He helped the Rams
reach the play-off semi-finals in 2005 and in
2007 he played in the play-off final as Derby
defeated West Brom by a single goal. Having
gained promotion, he was released.
He joined today’s opponents, Luton Town, for
a season where he scored once in five games
before hanging up his boots.
First Game...
Paul Peschisolido
20.01.2001 vs West Bromwich Albion L 2-1
Peschisolido netted on his United debut with a
right-footed equaliser on 75 minutes, cancelling
out Ruel Fox’s opener for West Brom on the
hour mark. United’s joy was short-lived after
Lee Hughes converted Fox’s corner six minutes
from time. United had played the best part of an
hour with 10 men after defender Rob Ullathorne
was handed his second booking of the match
after 32 minutes.
Last Game...
07.03.2004 vs Sunderland L 1-0
United were denied back-to-back FA Cup
semi-final spots after losing 1-0 to Sunderland
at the Stadium of Light in what proved to be
Peschisolido’s final match for the Blades.
Tommy Smith had given the hosts the lead on
12 minutes, with the pint-sized striker introduced
as a half-time substitute, replacing Stuart
McCall. A roaring second half performance
almost saw United level. Mart Poom denied Phil
Jagielka from close-range and later on, Wayne
Allison’s effort cannoned off Peschisolido and
into the ‘keeper’s hands.
GARETH TAYLOR +£400K
to Sheffield United
× THE STORY…
Gareth Taylor
By the end of February 1996, the
Howard Kendall regime was now
well underway, although early results
suggested this was going to be no
overnight fix. Despite a flurry of transfer
activity following a takeover and
Kendall’s arrival in December 1995, by
the time the season entered March,
United were still fully entrenched in a
fight to preserve second tier status.
Kendall had already signed Mark
Patterson, Gordon Cowans, Chris
Short, Don Hutchison, Brett Angell and
Michael Vonk to name a few but United
were still only out of the bottom three
on goal difference, and having played
more games than all of their relegation
rivals, Kendall needed to strengthen still.
Striker Andy Walker had just arrived,
but the boss wanted more options in
attack. Previous manager Dave Bassett
had since taken over at Crystal Palace
and the Eagles were soaring up the
table and on the cusp of a play-off spot.
With Bassett keen on two of his former
players in Dave Tuttle and Carl Veart,
a deal was struck for United to bag
£400,000 plus striker Gareth Taylor to
help bolster Kendall’s attacking options.
× THE PLAYERS…
Taylor had moved to Palace for a decent
fee of £750,000 in 1995 after making
himself known from a spell in the third
tier at Bristol Rovers where the big
striker had netted 16 goals in 46 league
games. His time at Palace never really
got going, but he did earn his first caps
for Wales at Selhurst Park. By the time of
his departure to United, Taylor had only
netted twice in 22 games for the Eagles.
UTB 47
Carl Veart
David Tut tle
Defender Tuttle had a promising start to
his career at Tottenham but the England
youth international failed to hold down
a regular place at White Hart Lane.
He joined the Blades during United’s
Premier League days, and he was a
reliable performer in the top flight until
injury ruled him out of United’s crucial
showdown with Chelsea as the Blades
suffered relegation. The injury kept him
out for 12 months but when he was fit, he
was a solid performer for the club.
Striker Veart was spotted by United
during a post season tour of Australia
in 1994. He had a useful first season for
the Blades playing either in midfield or
attack, contributing 11 goals. He netted
the winner against Arsenal in the FA
Cup the following season, but he didn’t
feature much under Kendall who was
looking for fresh faces to lead his line in
the long-term.
× THE OUTCOME…
Taylor proved to be a good acquisition
for United after he helped the Blades’
surge away from the drop zone in his
first season, before netting 12 goals as
the club reached the play-off final in
1997. He stayed at the Lane until 1998
when he was sold to Manchester City.
He would go on to have a good career
with the likes of Burnley and Nottingham
Forest and now manages Manchester
City Women.
Both Veart and Tuttle played a major
role as Palace reached the 1996 play-off
final under Bassett, with Tuttle starting
and Veart coming off the bench as the
Eagles lost 2-1 to Leicester. Bassett
left in February 1997 but again they
were both regulars as Palace reached
another play-off final, this time defeating
United with Tuttle playing and Veart
and unused sub. After a handful of
Premier League games, Veart moved
onto Millwall and now coaches back in
his native Australia. Tuttle also played
in the Premier League for Palace, but
injuries disrupted the rest of his career.
He would later move into coaching and
management.
SECRETS OF THE MUSEUM
Legends of the Lane curator JOHN GARRETT talks through some memorable
artifacts currently residing in the museum at Bramall Lane...
I suppose mascots are
a real part of the
modern game, if not
modern sport in general. I
have vague recollections of
Captain Blade making his first
appearance at the Lane
around 1996, but as my
matchday routine would have
been a bit different back then,
those recollections are a little
blurry!
He did me no favours
whatsoever in fairness. My
eldest at the time had trouble
distinguishing the slightly
tubby feller wandering around
with big feet in a Blades
kit from his own father for
many years, a problem made
even worse when I became
a member of staff. In fact,
when my youngest was born,
he would point to a picture
of Captain Blade and say,
“Daddy!”
I suppose relating a
relatively cuddly mascot to the
club nickname of The Blades
was always going to be a
fairly tough one. In this day
and age, and when there is
a constant battle to highlight
the problems and tragedies
surrounding knife crime, it just
would never have been the
right thing to have something
resembling a giant knife
wandering round the pitch
before the game, and quite
rightly so.
Many have worn the
costume down the years, from
ground staff taking it in turns to
a certain head of United media
jumping in the baths at the old
Wembley wearing the head
for a Sky advert. Didn’t
do it much good to be
fair. Apparently, the head
disappeared at some point
during or after the game,
ending up in the North East
before being returned, and I
always thought the Captain
was a local lad! Speaking as
someone who has pulled
on the costume for his
own kids’ parties, (and
I didn’t use my own
body before you
ask, it was the
whole costume)
Gaz Shanks, who I
recruited to be Captain
a lifetime ago, must
have the constitution
of a desert explorer as
it’s melty hot in there.
It improved when
they fitted an electric
fan in the head, but
you felt like you were
constantly being
attacked by a
swarm of wasps.
Back in the day, there have
been other attempts, possibly
the best-known being Bertie
Blade in the days when it
was apparently fine to have
a mascot shaped like a knife.
The example here came as
a pair with an Ozzy Owl
via the Sheffield Star in
the late 1920s, though
why any self-respecting
Blade would want Ozzy
remains to be seen! Both
were made from wood,
and we have a couple
of nice examples in the
museum collection, one
of which belongs to me!
I have only seen the
owl once, and that
was when a lady
brought a pair in to a
Sotheby’s valuation
day here at the
Lane. Joking aside,
they looked brilliant
together and were
in great condition. I
wonder if anyone will
wander into a valuation
day when we are all
long gone with a plastic
Blades garden gnome?
Well, you never know!
1981/82
40th Anniversary
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of United’s Fourth Division title winning season
in 1981/82, UTB trawls through our programme archive to chart the memorable season
through the eyes of the Blades matchday programme of the time. In this week’s edition,
we look over the programme from the FA Cup first round tie against Altrincham...
× SUPER 1982 CLUB BOOKS…
For the first time in the programme, a
full-page advertising 64-page action
packed club books. Not featuring
United though, the choice was
between Arsenal, West Ham, Ipswich,
Tottenham and Manchester United.
× IAN PORTERFIELD…
Whilst stressing the league is the priority, Ian
Porterfield also proclaimed his love for the FA
Cup – ‘for obvious reasons’ – clearly a nod
to his goal for Sunderland in their famous win
over Leeds. He also revealed his delight at the
availability of Keith Edwards after he was cuptied
for the League Cup games with Arsenal.
There was also a special mention for John
Matthews who returned to the side at Torquay
following a breakdown of his move to Brentford.
× AWARDS…
Again, no Match Sponsor this week, so an extra
page mentioning boss Porterfield’s Division
Four Manager of the Month award. The image
though relates to his Division Three Manager
of the Season award for his championship
winning season at Rotherham. Also pictured
John Lyall (Div 2, West Ham), Bobby Robson
(Ipswich, Special Award) and Ron Saunders
(Manager of the Year, Aston Villa).
× ALTRINCHAM…
A quick glance over the away pen-pics
of non-league Altrincham revealed
a familiar face. Goalkeeper John
Connaughton is profiled as the ‘Star
Visitor’ with his spell with United during
the ‘70s mentioned in his write up.
× THE TEAMS…
The team was as printed in a
match which ended 2-2. Keith
Edwards and Bob Hatton scoring
for United. There was an upset in
the replay as United crashed out
3-0 at Altrincham two days later.
HIGHS, LOWS
& THE UNUSUAL 2007/08
In each edition of UTB this season, DAVE BURKINSHAW looks back on a particular campaign
to seek out the good, bad and the sometimes strange events from the season...
Following the departure of manager
Neil Warnock after the club’s relegation
from the Premier League, Bryan
Robson was appointed as his replacement. The
former Manchester United and England star
enjoyed some managerial success with
Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion, but
the jury was out about whether he was the right
fit for the Blades. The squad for the new season
was weakened by the sale of Phil Jagielka to
Everton. However, the club strengthened the
forward line and full-back options with the
high-profile signings of James Beattie and Gary
Naysmith from Everton.
× THE HIGHS…
1. Although by January league results were
disappointing there were two notable victories
in the FA Cup against Premier League clubs,
Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City.
The Blades won 1-0 at Bolton in round three
courtesy of a goal from Australian international
midfielder David Carney and then beat City 2-1
at the Lane in round four. The goals against
City came from Luton Shelton and Jon Stead.
Shelton’s goal was assisted in the build up by
a deflection off a balloon which City fans had
thrown onto the pitch prior to kick off.
2. The fine form of striker James Beattie
was the highlight for many United fans in a
disappointing season. He scored 22 league
goals including a goal on his debut at home
to Colchester United, as well as scoring in five
R Luton Shelton gives United the lead
against Manchester City in the FA Cup
consecutive games in March and April including
a hat-trick at home to Leicester City and a
fine free-kick to salvage a point at home to
Sheffield Wednesday.
3. Following the appointment of Kevin Blackwell
in February as Bryan Robson’s replacement,
the team’s form improved dramatically and
one of the highlights was a run of eight wins in
10 games in March/April. Notable victories in
this period included 1-0 wins at Barnsley and
Burnley and consecutive home victories against
promotion chasing Hull City and Bristol City (2-0
and 2-1 respectively).
× THE LOWS…
1. The 2-0 defeat to local rivals Sheffield
Wednesday at Hillsborough on 19th January
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

UTB 53
2. Skipper Chris Morgan, known for his
combative and non-nonsense style of play,
was sent off twice in three weeks as the
season reached its climax. He was dismissed
in the games at Preston and at home to Hull.
3. Yet another high-profile close season
signing was the return of striker Billy Sharp
for his second spell at the club. He had
been signed from Scunthorpe United after
a prolific spell at Glanford Park. He did not
score a league goal for United until March in
the 2-1 home win against Coventry. Including
the Coventry game, he then scored in three
consecutive league games.
R James Beattie nets on the opening day against Colchester
2008 was a blow to United fans and the job
prospects of Bryan Robson. Supporters had
felt that in the build up to the game Robson had
not appreciated how much this game meant to
Blades fans and the team’s flat performance on
the day was a major disappointment.
2. The 3-0 loss at home to promotion chasing
Stoke City on 4th December 2007 seemed to
confirm that the Blades were in for a difficult
season and were not going to be amongst
teams challenging for promotion. United were
3-0 down at half-time and Stoke were largely
untroubled for the rest of the game.
× THE VERDICT...
For most fans the season was seen a wasted
opportunity for the club to make an immediate
return to the Premier League or at least
make the play-offs. The season was drifting
along with an outside risk of relegation which
resulted in Bryan Robson’s departure and
the appointment of Kevin Blackwell, former
assistant manager to Neil Warnock. The team’s
results improved with a more energetic and
direct style of play introduced by Blackwell.
3. The 3-2 defeat at Southampton in the final
game of the season extinguished the Blades’
slim chances of making the play-offs. The
team’s form had improved too late in the season
for them to close the four-point gap between
their final league position of ninth and the last
play-off place. The result did save the Saints
from relegation.
× THE UNUSUAL...
1. One of United’s other high profile close
season signings was midfielder Lee Hendrie,
who in the event had a disappointing time at
the Lane. The home game against Queens Park
Rangers in January probably typified his time
at United. He scored to give the team the lead
and was then immediately substituted.
FORMER PLAYER
T he Story of Kingsley Black...
WEMBLEY
APPEARANCES, CUP
WINS AND BASSETT IN
HIS UNDERPANTS
Having tasted glory at Wembley
on more than one occasion,
Kingsley Black may be forgiven
for thinking he had seen most things in
football before his arrival at Bramall Lane
in 1995.
Luton born and bred, this boyhood
Hatter lifted the League Cup as a Town
player having defeated Arsenal at
Wembley in 1988, whilst he also scored
a winner in the capital for Nottingham
Forest in their Full Members Cup triumph
over Southampton in 1992.
But seeing Blades boss Dave Bassett
in nothing more than his underwear
following a season finale in May 1995
also had a lasting imprint on his football
memory, as he ended a three-month
loan stint with United which saw him
score twice in an 11-game stint.
Kingsley netted as United ended the
1994/95 campaign with a 3-1 success
against his future club Grimsby, and
despite missing out on the play-offs,
there was still a carnival atmosphere at
the Lane.
Maybe the baking hot day got to
Bassett who famously stripped to
his underpants in order to offer up
some season ending souvenirs to the
United faithful – a scene Kingsley still
remembers fondly.
“Dave was a real character,” Kingsley
chuckled when recently reminiscing with
UTB.
“I remember the Grimsby game well,
but mainly for the boss. At full-time, I just
remember he threw all his clothes into
the crowd apart from his underpants. It
was a red-hot day, and he didn’t care
one bit! I’m not sure you’d be able to do
that these days, but he was a character
and sometimes was totally off the cuff
which is what we all liked about him. I
enjoyed playing for him in my brief time
at Bramall Lane, it was a great little move
for me.”
Prior to his temporary switch to S2,
Kingsley had made his name in the
higher echelons of the English game,
which included a major role in a golden
era for Luton, and playing under Brian
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

UTB 55
R Kingsley
taking aim
against Port
Vale
Clough at Nottingham Forest. During
his time with the latter, he even scored
a brace that once relegated Sheffield
Wednesday from the top division with
United going the other way after earning
a famous promotion at Leicester.
Fast forward to March 1995 and
Kingsley arrived in the Steel City with
Bassett attempting to mastermind an
immediate return to the Premier League
following relegation the previous
season.
The Blades were in the thick of the
fight, sitting fourth on Kingsley’s arrival,
and things looked rosier when he netted
his first goal for the club in his second
game as United defeated promotion
rivals Tranmere Rovers at Bramall Lane.
But United didn’t end the season well,
and soon fell out of the promotion race,
with Kinglsey netting his second goal for
the club on the final day which helped
secure an eighth placed finish.
Despite missing out on promotion,
Kingsley says he wanted to make his
temporary switch a permanent one but
his timing wasn’t right as the club were
about to enter a turbulent transitional
period.
“I just wanted to play games at the
time and the opportunity arose to come
to United under Dave Bassett and it
was a chance I jumped at to be honest,”
recalls Kinglsey, who had slipped down
the pecking order at then Premier
League Forest.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

56 UTB
FORMER PLAYER
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at
Bramall Lane, and it was a good club
under Dave, he was an experienced
manager who had his own methods
which brought him success at different
clubs, including United.
“The style of play was different to both
Luton and Forest in many respects, but
there were some excellent footballers
in that group and the aim was to get
the ball into the final third as quickly as
possible and create chances from there.
“It excited me because I liked to try
and get on the ball high up the pitch
and make something happen. United
were mightily effective in all honesty, so
although it was relatively brief it was a
positive move for me and one I thought
might have lasted longer.
“Unfortunately, though, Bassett’s time
was coming to an end, and we fell short
in the fight for promotion, despite having
the likes of Dane Whitehouse, Roger
Nilsen and Jostein Flo. Glyn Hodges had
a wand of a left foot and I’m sure Nathan
Blake was sold for over a million the next
season, so the squad didn’t lack talent.
“At the time Bramall Lane was a threesided
ground and slightly odd in many
respects, the atmosphere was certainly
affected, and I didn’t experience it
properly as a home player because
of the circumstances and that was a
disappointment because it wasn’t a
nice place to come as the part of the
opposition.
“The restructuring of the ground
was important at the time though and
the club have reaped the rewards in
the subsequent years because the
infrastructure and stadium now is
something to be very proud of and it’s
been built up over a long period of time.
“I remember both my goals for the
Blades vividly, one against Tranmere in
a night game at the Lane and another
on the final day of the season against
Grimsby Town, who I later joined
permanently.
“I honestly thought I’d stay and heard
a little rumour there was interest in a
doing a deal, but it didn’t happen and
that’s football, things don’t always go as
you’d hope, and we ultimately went our
separate ways.
“I can still remember the training
ground too on the top of the hill that
overlooked the city. I remember that place
like yesterday and I know a lot of former
players from my era speak about it.
“I’ve still got a few connections with
the club now, so I’ve always looked
out for the Blades results, and I was
delighted to see them get back to the
Premier League a few years ago.”
UTB 57
R The Blades
just missed out
on the playoffs
in 1994/95
But it was having progressed
through the ranks with this afternoon’s
opponents where the name Kingsley
Black first hit the headlines, surrounded
by a number of Luton legends, during
a memorable time for the Bedfordshire
club.
Kingsley though admits it is only
when he reflects on his career that
he understands the magnitude of the
success he, and everyone connected to
the club, had as the Hatters become cup
kings and top flight mainstays during a
highly-successful period.
Brian Stein, older brother of former
Chelsea marksman Mark (no more
mentions of him!), was the striker who
netted a brace to gun down Arsenal at
the home of English football in 1988, and
Kingsley admits lifting the League Cup
at Wembley was a career highlight that
took some topping, despite enjoying
more final success with Nottingham
Forest and Grimsby later in his career.
England internationals Ricky Hill and
Steve Foster were big names in the
game when teenager Kingsley made the
breakthrough for the team he supported
as a boy in the town he still resides
in now, and Town’s attack was led by
the much-respected Mick Harford and
the aforementioned Stein as he recalls
fondly.
“I was certainly part of a fantastic
era at Luton Town, winning trophies
and playing in the top-flight,” Kinglsey,
who also earned 30 caps for Northern
Ireland, remarked.
“It was my hometown club, I was
brought up and schooled in the town
and a fan really, so it was awe inspiring
for me personally playing alongside
some of the players I’d watched from the
terraces.
“The likes of Hill, Stein, Harford and
Foster to name just a handful, ensured
we had an experienced squad who were
used to tasting success. So to break
into the group and play in some of the
biggest games of the club’s history
was fantastic and leaves wonderful
memories to reflect on.
“At the time it was just the situation
we found ourselves really and it’s
probably only now that you appreciate
the opportunities of playing in Wembley
finals, because back then you didn’t
know what the future was going to hold
and just how a big an achievement it
was to be consistently competing in cup
finals.
“As a player I always focused on the
present time, which is only natural I
suppose, but reflecting back now it was
an incredible habit to have in my early
years, going to Wembley on numerous
occasions, now it would be unthinkable
for clubs outside those at the top end of
the Premier League to replicate what we
did in all honesty.
58 UTB
FORMER PLAYER
“We didn’t take it for granted back
then either, we were just fortunate to
have a wonderful side, who were settled
and together and used to doing well in
those big games, particularly those cup
ties.
“It’s nearly 35 years ago since the
League Cup final win against Arsenal,
but it is still sharp in my memory
as there are always discussions or
interviews like this one where it crops
up in conversation. The club have held
anniversary celebrations to mark the
achievements of 1988, but how many
times it will happen again is obviously
debatable in the modern game.
“The older generation of fans
recognise you in passing even now all
these years on which is obviously nice
and the teams I played in are spoken
about fondly because of the success we
brought the club and town.
“One for the Blades fans to note is I
scored twice at Derby County on the
final day of the 1989/90 season as Luton
dramatically avoid relegation with a
3-2 win and it meant Ron Atkinson’s
Sheffield Wednesday went down!”
Another United connection crops up
in conversation when talking about his
early days as a player for both club and
country, with a former Blades boss, a
midfielder during his playing days being
spoken about in high regard by Kingsley.
“Danny Wilson was a super guy and
a fantastic footballer,” he said of the ex-
United boss.
“We also played together for Northern
Ireland. He was a big influence at Luton
but never for me got the recognition he
probably deserved. He was such a good
player and I’m not surprised he went on
to enjoy a wonderful career as a player
and in management, like a lot of that
side did really.”
In September 1991, non-other than
Nottingham Forest with Brian Clough at
the helm came calling for his services
with the Reds prepared to pay over £1
million to secure his signature.
Despite playing in Clough’s final
home game before retirement in May
1993, ironically it was the Blades who
relegated Forest from England’s top tier,
on an afternoon that saw Unitedites join
the home supporters at the City Ground
in singing the name of one of the
greatest managers of all-time, another
memory Kingsley recalls well.
“When Brian Clough and Nottingham
Forest came in for me, I knew my time
at Luton was up,” Kingsley, now 53,
explained.
“They paid decent money for me,
and David Pleat had just come back
as manager, so he’d got some money
to restructure the squad and my move
S Kingsley’s
goals came
in home wins
over Tranmere
and Grimsby
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

UTB 59
R He ended
his career
with spells at
Lincoln and
Grimsby
to the City Ground was probably the
catalyst.
“Brian was obviously a massive
character and a wonderful manager who
had so much success, particularly at
Forest, so at the time it was too good an
opportunity to pass up.
“I scored in the cup final win against
Southampton in 1992, with Scott
Gemmill getting a brace. Le Tisser and
Kevin Ball scored for the Saints, and it
was an excellent game for the neutral,
a real entertaining clash and I also
played in the League Cup final against
Manchester United, but we lost that one
1-0.
“Brian’s last game at Forest saw us
lose to Sheffield United and we were
relegated from the Premier League.
He’d left such a legacy at the club, but it
was the end of an era and the start of a
new one under Frank Clark as we won
promotion straight back to the top-flight
the following season.
“The emergence of Steve Stone and
Ian Woan saw my game time limited after
that and seemingly nobody ever got
injured and it just became harder and
harder to get an opportunity and that’s
when I joined the Blades.
“After spells with Grimsby and then
Lincoln I did a bit of coaching, but
when that kind of fizzled out I went into
property, and it’s been a big part of my
life since, we love getting away to our
place in Majorca whenever we can as a
family.”
So, fast forward to 2022, what does
Kingsley make of two of his former clubs
as they prepare to do battle at the Lane?
He concluded: “I’m sure it’ll be a real
good game for the neutral. United have
obviously had a few games postponed
in recent weeks which has hampered
their progress and halted the momentum
that was building.
“But Paul Heckingbottom has a good
track record in the area from his time
at Barnsley and has done really well
since replacing Slaviša Jokanović. The
Blades are at home and like in my day
are always tough opposition at Bramall
Lane, so it will be a difficult one for Luton
– I’m just disappointed I’m not able to
get up to watch it!
“Nathan Jones has enjoyed two
wonderful spells at Luton though and
they continue to defy the expectations
of many outside the club by more than
holding their own in what is always a
fiercely competitive division, packed
with so many clubs who have aspirations
to return to the Premier League – United
are one for sure.
“Nathan has worked wonders
at Kenilworth Road and has done
fantastically well on the recruitment side.
He relishes these sorts of challenges
and it’ll be no different in front of over
25,000 supporters at the weekend.”
BLADES BACKING
FOR RAINBOW LACES
Sheffield United is proud to
once again be supporting the
Rainbow Laces Campaign.
Our day of activities had
originally been scheduled for
the home fixture against QPR
in December, but due to the
raft of postponed games we
have had to wait until now to
finally mark our Rainbow Laces
fixture.
Today we will be showing
our support for Rainbow Laces
with our players wearing the
Rainbow Blades t-shirts during
the pre-match warm up and
we will have rainbow goal nets
and flags displayed around the
stadium.
James Laley, the chair of
Rainbow Blades, has also
spent some time recently
meeting with the men’s and
women’s first team and U23s
talking about the importance
of the campaign.
This year’s campaign
‘Lace Up and Speak Up’
aims to make the Rainbow
Laces not just a symbol of
inclusion, but also a pledge
of commitment to speak up
in the conversations that
matter. So, how can you
help? Sheffield United takes
a zero-tolerance stance on all
forms of discrimination. If you
witness or experience any
form of discrimination including
RAINBOW
BLADES
AMBASSADORS
Our ambassadors Tony Currie,
Sam Badger (daughter of Len
Badger) and United Women
defender Ellie Wilson recently
spoke to Rainbow Blades…
Why do you think Rainbow
Laces is such an important
and key campaign for LGBT+
inclusion in sport?
● Tony Currie: “It highlights
and promotes the
importance of acceptance
and ensuring everyone
feels safe regardless of
their sexual orientation or
gender identity.”
● Sam Badger: “Because it
gives visibility to members of
the LGBT+ community who
are involved in different sports
and encourages others to
participate. It also highlights
to the wider community that
sport is diverse and through
this diversity can offer a truly
inclusive environment, where
the only thing that matters
is the enjoyment of and
participation in that sport.”
● Ellie Wilson: “It’s a great
campaign to raise awareness
and emphasise how important
inclusion is. The Rainbow
Laces campaign itself is a
fantastic way of doing that
through football, and the fact
that the game is watched so
widely and can reach such a
large audience adds to the
positive impact that such a
campaign can have.”
What role do you feel you play
as an ally?
● TC: “As a Rainbow Blades
ambassador I will continue to
show support and promote
equality and inclusion for all
so everyone can enjoy the
beautiful game. All Blades can
play a part in this.”
● SB: “I feel it is my
responsibility to discuss
and debate with others
about inclusivity in sport and
address any misconceptions
held about Rainbow Laces
and what it is trying to
achieve. The Blades, indeed,
any professional sporting
body, can be an effective ally
in showing that they are open
to everyone to experience
and enjoy whatever it is.”
● EW: “It’s important to
show support and to act as a
positive role model. I’m all for
supporting Rainbow Blades
and LGBT+ inclusion and if
I can help to raise awareness
or spread positive messages
then I’d like to.”
What more do you think can
be done for LGBT+ inclusion
in football?
● TC: “More visible initiatives
like the Rainbow Laces
campaign which really
highlights people’s support
and is a fantastic activation.”
● SB: “Breaking down barriers,
opening up discussions,
talking to people who are
unaware of what the LGBT+
community consists of, largely
showing people that we
are also just people – with
a shared love and passion
for a sport.”
● EW: “I think there
is more support and
acknowledgement now than
there has been before, but
it can always improve. I feel
that the more people become
accepting or maybe are made
more aware of the barriers
that the LGBT+ community
may face in sport then that
can only contribute to creating
a positive and inclusive
environment.”
Sander Berge
PICTURES OF MY CAREER
UTB looks back on some special images during the careers of United’s first team squad.
This week it is the turn of SANDER BERGE to look back on some career highlights...
NORTHERN IRELAND 2-0 NORWAY
Date: 26/03/2017
Competition: World Cup Qualifier
Sander says: “I came on for my international
debut against Northern Ireland – and that’s
Ollie (Norwood) on the opposite team. I was
18 or 19 so that was a special moment in what
was a cracking atmosphere. I remember
being on the bench and almost shaking. We
were 2-0 down and by the time I came on
the pressure was off, and whilst we lost it is
always special to represent your country.”
GENK 1-1 BESIKTAS
Date: 08/11/2018
Competition: Europa League
Sander says: “Yeah, I think
this was actually my first
goal for Genk. I remember
coming on in this game
with Besiktas, and we
were losing 2-1 at the time.
I picked the ball up 25 yards
from goal and smashed it in
the corner, so that was an
amazing feeling.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

UTB 63
CRYSTAL PLACE 0-1 BLADES
Date: 01/02/2020
Competition: Premier League
Sander says: “I remember this one very well.
This was my debut for Sheffield United and
my first appearance in the Premier League.
It still gives me goosebumps. I remember
arriving a couple of days before, I had
trained only a couple of times, so it was
great to play straight away. We fought very
hard to win the game, the fans were singing
my song after the game, it was brilliant.”
BLADES 3-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Date: 02/07/2020
Competition: Premier League
Sander says: “This was a big game and
a big win. I came back from a tough
lockdown, I’d been training on my own,
I hadn’t been in the country long before
lockdown, so I still didn’t know many
people. Scoring in this game, it was my
first for United, was special against a really
good Spurs team. The win was deserved,
and it was just a good day all round.”
LIVERPOOL 2-1 BLADES
Date: 24/10/2020
Competition: Premier League
Sander says: “It was a nice
feeling to score at Anfield even if
we didn’t get anything from the
game. It was decided I would
take penalties if we got one in
the build-up, so to get one so
quickly was great. We played well
in this game, despite enduring a
tough start to the season. It was
a nice feeling to score, even if
there were no fans inside.”
KIDS PL CUP
In early November we hosted our EFL Utilita
Kids Cup at Leisure United Graves which saw
Nether Green Junior School run out winners
over Arbourthorne Community in the final.
The tournament saw over 175 children take
part, representing 22 different teams across 18
different Sheffield schools.
James Morley, United’s Premier League
Primary Stars coordinator, said: “It was great
to see so many children coming down and
taking part in the competition, especially with
COVID-19 where we were unable to run these
competitions over the last couple of years so to
have them back with so many different teams
was excellent to watch.”
Mr Hancock, a teacher from Nether Green
Junior School, said: “We are so proud of
the boys for winning the Local Area Finals.
The talent on show from all the schools was
tremendous, and we had to play really well as
a team to come out on top. A big thank you
must go to Sheffield United Community
Foundation for their continued support of our
football programme at Nether Green Junior,
and for organising such a brilliant event that
was enjoyed by all. We are now super excited
MILEY’S STORY
Through the PLPFA funded Empower
LGBT+ Project at the Foundation, we
were able to showcase one of our very
own young fans, Miley, in highlighting
what Rainbow Laces, the importance
of family and being able to be open
in their LGBT+ experiences mean to
them.
Miley, who is 11, belongs to a local
girl’s football team and has faced
challenges both in sport, and her
personal life with disability as well as
coming to terms with her sexuality. If it
wasn’t for the love and support of her
mum, Becky, Miley feels she wouldn’t
have been able to be her true self or
love her life as much as she does. The
bond the pair have is unbreakable and
really is built from strong stuff, as you
can see in the video on the Premier
League website.
“I’ve found my second home,” Miley
says. “Football is a sport for everyone
and LGBTQ+ people know our idols are
looking out for us. They’re our allies.”
As part of the Premier League’s
longstanding partnership with
Stonewall, they have developed new
Rainbow Laces education resources
for primary and secondary schools to
facilitate discussions around sexuality,
allyship and empowering young people
to tackle discrimination.
TRAINEESHIPS
Sheffield United Community Foundation are
recruiting our next set of 16–24-year-olds to
start our Traineeship Programme on Monday
14th February.
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain work
experience and learn new skills, offering
career pathways in the industry of your choice.
The 12-week programme is committed
to making young people more employable,
helping those who are unsure of their career
path and have minimal experience and
qualifications.
Over the 12 weeks you will complete
over 100 hours of work experience in the
industry of your choice, undertake Functional
Skills (maths and English) and participate in
educational workshops.
After successful completion of the
programme, you will be equipped to progress
into further education or employment. There
may be opportunities for you to progress
with the Foundation, whether that be in an
educational capacity, with our Football &
TRANSFER
TRAIL
In every edition of UTB this season, DAVE BURKINSHAW looks
back on a significant transfer involving the Blades...
1975-79
TO SOUTH AMERICA AND BACK TO BREAK THE CLUB’S RECORD FEE
The record transfer fee paid for
a player with a British club
tripled by the time the 1970s
ended. The ongoing rising of the
transfer record began when Liverpool’s
star man, England international Kevin
Keegan, joined German club Hamburger
SV for £500,000 in June 1977.
That record fee had doubled by
February 1979 when Birmingham
City’s much sought after forward,
Trevor Francis, joined Brian Clough’s
Nottingham Forest for a fee of £1.18
million. However, as the year progressed
even this landmark fee had been
surpassed by the transfers of Wolves
midfielder Steve Daley to Manchester
City for £1.45 million and Aston Villa
striker, Andy Gray, to Wolves for
£1.469 million.
With United’s ongoing financial
pressures, especially meeting
repayments of their loan to build the
South Stand, it was unsurprising that
the club had to be very cautious in the
transfer market.
By the mid-1970s the first team
squad was ageing and in need of new
blood. Manager Ken Furphy tried to
use the loan system to strengthen the
forward line when he signed Bolton’s
Garry Jones. Jones did not do enough
R Chris
Guthrie in
action for
United in 1975
to justify United buying him and he
returned to his parent club.
After finishing sixth in the top flight,
the club signed the big striker fans
had craved during the close season
of 1975. The player they signed for a
club record fee of around £90,000 was
Chris Guthrie from Southend United.
Unfortunately, the 1975/76 season
turned out to be a disaster for the club
on the field with relegation confirmed
with six games still to play.
With the predicted loss of income
United decided to cash in on one of
their star players, Tony Currie, who was
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs LUTON TOWN

UTB 69
sold to Leeds United for a fee of around
£250,000, a club record incoming fee
for the Blades.
The club now embarked on a policy
of seeking bargain buys and developing
their own talented youngsters such as
Tony Kenworthy, Simon Stainrod and
Keith Edwards. United continued to
struggle in the second tier in the 1976/77
and 1977/78 seasons finishing 11th
and then 12th.
Surprisingly given the club’s well
publicised financial issues the board
significantly backed new manager
Harry Haslam in the transfer market
during the summer of 1978. Amongst
the costly signings were striker Steve
Finnieston from Chelsea for £90,000,
midfielder John Matthews from Arsenal
for between £80,000 and £90,000
and most excitingly of all midfielder
Alejandro ‘Alex’ Sabella from Argentinian
club River Plate for a club record fee of
£160,000. United and their boss were
pioneers in seeking top overseas talent
in 1978 and the club’s profile rose as
a result. However, on the field results
R Simon
Stainrod was
one of a host
of promising
youngsters
U Tony Currie
was sold to
Leeds in a then
record sale
continued to be poor with the once
unthinkable possibility of relegation to
the Third Division looming.
To help fund the costly signings
United had relied on the judgement of
manager Haslam, who had a reputation
as a ‘wheeler dealer’. Unfortunately,
the most saleable assets the club had
were talented youngsters and thus the
likes of Keith Edwards, Simon Stainrod,
Imre Varadi and later Gary Hamson and
Ian Benjamin were all sold. Some of the
money raised was also used to fund
United’s ongoing debts.
Haslam added to his expensive
signings when Ipswich Town defender
Les Tibbott joined the Blades in March
1979 for £100,000 and Derby County’s
experienced Scottish international
midfielder Bruce Rioch signed on loan.
Sadly, in spite of the influx of costly
signings the team lost its battle to retain
Second Division status and in May
1979 United dropped into the third tier
for the first time in their history. This
gamble in the transfer market had failed
and questions were raised about the
manager’s judgement, especially the
signing of injury prone striker Steve
Finnieston to replace Keith Edwards
who continued his prolific scoring form
at Hull City.
After a few weeks heavily
disrupted by postponed
fixtures, Kal Naismith’s injurytime
winner which secured a
3-2 win against Championship
leaders Bournemouth last
Saturday inspired a release of
emotion that will live long in
the memory.
The wild scenes of
celebrations at Kenilworth
Road suggested the win
meant more than just the three
points that were pocketed,
yet it was a goal that meant
so much more to a club that
has established itself as a
real force in this division since
Nathan Jones returned as the
club’s manager for a second
spell in May 2020.
With plans to build a new
stadium at an advanced stage,
these are optimistic times for
all Luton Town followers.
MANAGER...
NATHAN JONES
Nathan Jones had to win over a few Luton fans
as he returned for a second spell at the club
at the end of the delayed 2019/20 season, but
the sceptics have been turned into devotees
over the last few months.
Jones succeeded in producing a minor
miracle by keeping Luton in this division against
plenty of odds as football resumed after the first
Covid lockdown and he then built foundations
by securing the Hatters in the Championship
last season.
Now he is on his way to securing another
season in this league and with games in hand
after postponements due to Covid, some Luton
fans are even daring to dream that they can
mount a promotion push in the second half of
this season.
The ambitious Jones is keen to manage
expectations, but he is looking to a future that
could include a push for a place in the Premier
League.
“I am very proud of the way we compete at
this level,” says Jones. “We have been able to
maintain and establish in the Championship,
but now we want to really challenge for certain
things.
“A lot of people would look and say that’s
unrealistic given where we are budget-wise, but
we don’t rely on budget. We rely on hard work,
good recruitment and the process of what we
do here.
“If we can sell that and players buy into it,
then we are able to compete with teams that
have greater resources. We don’t harp on about
the size of our budget. That’s never been the
case. We’ve always believed in our work and
our recruitment above our ability to pay certain
wages. As long as it stays that way, we will be
able to compete at this level.”
Last Saturday’s thrilling win against
Bournemouth at Kenilworth Road was an
example of Luton punching above their weight
against opposition that boasts a huge financial
advantage over them, with Jones rightfully
proud with the results he is producing.
“Bournemouth and Fulham are the best two
sides in the league, so to do what we did, I
thought we were full value for our win,” he said
of the dramatic 3-2 victory in front of a buoyant
home crowd in Luton and live on Sky Sports.
“We weren’t categorically better than them,
but I thought we were the more aggressive
side. We created more problems, especially first
half and then we finished with real intent to win
a football match and that’s what happened.
“It’s a wonderful way to win a game against
a very, very, very good side, one of the top two
sides in the division.
“We were always going to lack a bit of energy
second half because we haven’t played but the
goals are poor, we should defend better, but to
show the character that we did is amazing, as
I thought we were the ones pushing late on to
win the game.”
LEAGUE CUP FINAL
LUTON 3-2 ARSENAL
April 24th 1988
Wembley glory is all the more
cherished when it is fleeting
and this victory for Luton in
the League Cup final against
a powerful Arsenal side
will always be cherished by
Hatters fans.
A Hatters side managed by
Ray Harford were big outsiders
against George Graham’s
Arsenal, but Luton found a way
to win courtesy of a dramatic
last-minute clincher from Brian
Stein.
The turning point of the
match came with 10 minutes
left, as Arsenal striker Alan
Smith hit the woodwork
and Martin Hayes, Michael
Thomas and David Rocastle
all had shots saved by Luton’s
inspirational ‘keeper Andy
Dibble.
After that, Arsenal were
awarded a penalty after
Rocastle was fouled in the
box and Dibble saved Nigel
Winterburn’s spot-kick by
turning the ball round the post.
An inspired Luton then
equalised with seven minutes
remaining when Gus Caesar
miss kicked a clearance on the
edge of his penalty
area, enabling Danny
Wilson to head the
ball into the Arsenal
goal from a Mark Stein
cross.
With less than a
minute to go, Stein
scored his second
goal of the match
to put the game
beyond the reach of
an Arsenal side that
had lifted the League
Cup a year earlier.
Images of this great day
still adorn the walls of Luton’s
Kenilworth Road home and
while the club has enjoyed
some great days in recent
years, their 1988 League Cup
win will always hold a special
place in the hearts of all
supporters.
LAST TIME WE MET...
United ended this game with plenty of
frustration as the wait to record a first win
of the Championship season continued at
Kenilworth Road.
Luton manager Nathan Jones was
convinced his team deserved to win a tight
game, but the decisive moment that both
sides were craving would not arrive.
A striker who will be a real
handful for the Blades
defence this afternoon, he
was a stand-out performer
in Luton’s impressive win
against Bournemouth last
he has already moved into
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
FORGOTTEN GROUNDS
Opened: 1925 Closed: 2001
Each week UTB looks back over a stadium from the past to
discover United’s first, last and most memorable performance...
× THE GROUND…
Oxford United, known at the
time as Headington United,
moved into the Manor Ground
in 1925. Headington were
an amateur side, with the
ground primitive seeing
little significant work until
the 1940s. In 1946, a stand
purchased from Cowley FC
was installed on the Osler
Road side. It didn’t last long
after collapsing the following
winter, in the end being rebuilt
with seats at the Cuckoo
Lane End. Two years later, the
first terracing was installed,
stretching along the London
Road End and a little up the
Osler Road side. The club
turned professional in 1949
and invested in five rows of
standing on the Beech and
London Roads, and a dressing
room on the corner of Beech
R Oxford taking on Preston at the Manor Ground back in 1964
Road and Cuckoo Lane with
180 seats above, increasing
capacity to 12,000. In 1950
a roof was installed on the
Osler Road side, and two
years later the Bolton Beech
Road terrace was demolished
and work commenced on a
new stand housing 1,600. The
club became Oxford United
in 1961 and were elected to
the Football League in 1962.
UTB 91
The Cuckoo Lane End was
then dismantled and replaced
by a dozen rows of terracing,
before the club installed a
4,000-capacity terrace in the
London Road Stand. In 1984
the Osler Road terrace was
demolished and replaced
with new terracing and a
new roof which ran up to the
halfway line. The remainder of
the terrace was replaced by
two separate covered areas.
The ground eventually ran
into disrepair and following
the Taylor Report the club
knew redevelopment wasn’t
viable. Construction on
a new stadium began in
1997 but was halted due to
financial problems. Following
a takeover, it was eventually
completed with Oxford
playing their final game at the
Manor Ground in 2001.
× FIRST UNITED VISIT…
The Blades visited the Manor
Ground for the first time
in April 1969 for a Second
Division fixture. Arthur
Rowley’s side were beaten
1-0 as Oxford completed
the league double over the
Blades. United ended the
season in ninth whilst Oxford
narrowly avoided relegation.
× LAST UNITED VISIT…
By the time of Oxford’s
departure from the Manor
Ground in 2001, the two clubs
were in different divisions.
The Blades’ last visit took
place on October 24th 1998,
and it was a good day for
United as goals from Dean
Saunders and Petr Katchouro
R Aerial view of the ground from 1992
ensured a 2-0 win. United
ended the 1998/99 campaign
in eighth whilst Oxford
finished second bottom and
were relegated to the third
tier.
× MEMORABLE GAME…
In September 1997 United
arrived at the Manor Ground
for this second-tier clash
unbeaten with three wins and
two draws from the opening
five games. Oxford sat 18th
and were quickly behind after
a minute to a Brian Deane
goal. Nigel Jemson levelled
before Oxford had future
Blade Bobby Ford sent off
for handling on the line and
Jan-Age Fjortoft netted a
penalty. David Holdsworth
made it 3-1 before Jemson
netted a second to pull one
back for the 10-men, but Dane
Whitehouse’s goal 10 minutes
from time made it 4-2.
× WHAT HAPPENED NEXT…
After a 1-1 draw with Port Vale
in the Manor Ground’s final
ever game, Oxford moved
to the Kassam Stadium on
the outskirts of the city. The
old ground was demolished
and now houses The Manor
Hospital – a private hospital
which is operated by Nuffield
Health.
