Style Magazine - February 2022
Whether the words “bibimbap” and “bulgogi” ring any bells or not, this month’s feature, “Head East!” (page 72), is aimed at informing and hopefully inspiring you to explore unfamiliar-to-you fare. From Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese to Japanese and Korean, we share the flavors that define each country’s cooking and a list of the most iconic eats. Hopefully it encourages you to think outside your typical takeout box and dig into something that surprises you…in the best, most delicious way. What else is cooking this month? In honor of Valentine’s Day, we have lots of lovey-dovey content, including a spotlight on four meet-cute couples who make marriage look easy (“Two’s Company” on page 22); the region’s prettiest pink drinks to sip alongside your nearest and dearest (page 92); and relationship pointers from the pros, ensuring your courtship stays sexy and spontaneous (“Together Forever” on page 38). One of the tips? Scheduling at least two date nights every month. If you’re looking for something different to do, consider reserving a spot at Auburn’s hottest table in town, Restaurant Josephine (page 88); heading out for a hike on the Homestead to Blue Ridge Loop (page 42), or attending a crab feed fundraiser, art exhibit, or live performance (page 12); all are wonderful ways to bring the butterflies back, if even for a few fleeting hours. I wish I could say my husband and I have big, passionate Valentine’s Day plans, but we’ll be bonding over the birth of our baby girl—estimated to arrive any day now—so I’m anticipating a February filled with little sleep, lots of Thai takeout (our family’s favorite!), and an abundance of love. See you after my maternity leave. Cheers! —Megan megan@stylemg.com @meggoeggowaffle

Growing up, my only exposure to
Asian food was Chinese takeout
(from Bel Air of all places!), where
my family would stuff their faces
with all the westernized staples
we knew and loved: chicken
chow mein, pork fried rice, and
broccoli beef. Delicious? Indeed. Authentic? Not
so much. It wasn’t until going to South Korea
in fifth grade; moving out of Auburn to bigger,
more metropolis cities (San Diego and Sydney);
traveling across Asia; and finally marrying
someone with the last name “Lim,” that I was
exposed to what real, and really good, Asian
food is all about. Don’t get me wrong: Syrupysweet
orange chicken and deep-fried sushi
slathered in sauce is seriously satisfying, but
there are so many more layers and flavors to
the cuisine, too.

MUSIC
What was
the last book
you read?
“Frank: The Voice by James
Kaplan. Sinatra was the
greatest voice and entertainer
of the last 100 years—talented,
complicated, and mesmerizing.
What a life!”—Terry Carroll
“Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for
Meaning. I was bracing myself for a
depressing read (like Elie Wiesel's
Night) but despite the dark
Holocaust subject, the book was
strangely uplifting and offered
many nuggets of wisdom—and a
much-needed reality check!”
—Tara Mendanha
“Republic of Thieves—the third
book in Scott Lynch's amazing
urban fantasy series: Gentleman
Bastard. Lynch quickly became
one of my new favorite authors
with this series, and I cannot
recommend it enough.”
—Ray Burgess
“The Stranger Beside Me
by Ann Rule. Nothing like a
real-life account of knowing a
serial killer to help you sleep at
night!”—Emily Peter-Corey
“The Art of Happiness: A Handbook
for Living by Dalai Lama and
Howard C. Cutler, MD. It came
recommended by my sister and
is all about intuitive wisdom and
understanding human psychology
to define the purpose of life.”
—Taylor Gillespie
“Bringing Up Bébé: One American Mother
Discovers the Wisdom of French
Parenting by Pamela Druckerman. It’s
full of actionable advice that I plan to
try on my soon-to-arrive baby girl, like
‘le pause,’ which apparently helps your
child sleep through the night at just a
few months old. Here’s hoping it works!”
—Megan Wiskus
“I just read The Alchemist by Paulo
Coelho for the second time. This
book hits home for anyone in
seach of some sort of purpose
or meaning to their life. I could
read it many times and discover
something new that I missed the
time before.” —Gary Zsigo

Find a
Friend
by TARA MENDANHA
Don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t
have made it through the pandemic
without friends to check in with,
commiserate with, and celebrate small
wins with. If you’re looking to make new
friends or just someone to share your
passions and hobbies with, check out
one of the places below.
Bond over books. Reading
doesn’t have to be a solitary
hobby. Join one of the umpteen
book clubs in our area to find
a friend who gets your wordy
puns and can talk for hours on
their favorite author. Folsom
Public Library (library.folsom.
ca.us) has monthly book clubs—
including a YA club, which
meets every month at Folsom’s
Barnes & Noble Kitchen. They
even offer “book club in a bag.”
Fit4Mom Folsom Lake
El Dorado Hills’ Face in a Book
(getyourfaceinabook.com) has
nonfiction and “travel and taste”
clubs, where you can get 15% off
on the selected works. Roseville
Public Library (roseville.ca.us/
library) also has a couple of
monthly book clubs (like their
popular “page turners” club) at the
Maidu Library.
Meet other mommas (and
dadas). One of the best ways to
make friends if you’re a parent
is through workout and activity
groups. Fit4Mom Folsom Lake
(folsomlake.fit4mom.com) offers
Stroller Strides (a total body
workout for moms with kids in
tow), prenatal classes, Stroller
Barre, a run club, and more at
locations across Folsom and
El Dorado Hills. Steve Wallen
Swim School (wallenswim.
com) in Roseville and El Dorado
Hills offers baby classes and
family swim classes for an
enriching bonding experience,
as well as the opportunity to
meet other families. Other fun
locales to meet families at are
My Gym (mygym.com/folsom),
Capital City Music Together
(capitalcitymusictogether.
com), Tricks Gymnastics
(tricksgym.com), Roseville
Academy of Dance
(rosevilleacademyofdance.
com), and Extreme Gymnastics
(extremegymnastics.com),
among others.
Join hands. Find a cause
close to your heart and
buddy up to build a better
community through volunteer
work. Whether it’s Friends
of Folsom (friendsoffolsom.
org), Placer SPCA (placerspca.
org), Upper Room Dining Hall
(upperroomdininghall.org),
or through any of the other
nonprofit organizations in
our area, you’re sure to find
purpose—and friends.
Man’s best friend. Grab
your furry friends and head to
the dog park. They could just
help you make friends on—and
off—the field. RRUFF Dog Park
(rruffhealingheroes.org) in
Rocklin offers a safe and fun
environment to bond over pets
with their numerous activities
and events. The EDH Community
Dog Park (eldoradohillscsd.
org) is another good place for
pets and pals, as are Paul J.
Ryan (aka Hacienda) Dog Park
(cameronpark.org/paul-j-ryanmemorial-park-dog-park)
in
Cameron Park, FIDO Field Dog
Park (folsom.ca.us/government/
parks-recreation) in Folsom, and
countless parks in Roseville (Bear
Dog Park, Hughes Dog Park, and
Saugstad Dog Park).
Work that network. If you’re
a small business owner, your
local chamber of commerce
can be more than just a handy
resource. It can also be a great
place to meet like-minded
people and partake in some fun
activities. Take, for example,
the Roseville Area Chamber of
Commerce (rosevillechamber.
com) that offers a variety of
opportunities to socialize—
including happy hours, coffee
chats, breakfasts, and luncheons
(we’re sensing a foodie theme
here!). The Folsom Chamber
of Commerce (folsomchamber.
com) has numerous mixers and
gatherings while also hosting big
events like the Folsom Women’s
Conference. And The El Dorado
Hills Chamber of Commerce

Local Couples We Love
by TARA MENDANHA
We love “love” here at Style, which is why this
Valentine’s Day, we’re showcasing four local
couples who are madly in love with life and
each other. Cheers to a love-filled February!
Tamara & Q Bennett
Loomis
What's your favorite thing about
your partner?
TAMARA: Our private time of having
conversations—and it really doesn’t
matter what we’re discussing. I love his
perspective.
Q: Her brilliance and her faith.
What's your least favorite thing
about your partner?
TAMARA: I think I’m spoiled, and he
loves to remind me of it!
Q: I really have none. If I were to be
picky it would be “her brilliance.” She
thinks she knows everything!
What challenges have you faced
together and how have you
overcome them?
TAMARA: The greatest challenge was
the opening of Q1227 Restaurant
three months prior to the pandemic.
Q prepared an awesome business
plan that we were challenged to fulfill.
But when it was time to fully reopen,
Q developed a culture that brought
comfort and unity [amid] racial riots
and divisions. This entire process
brought us closer.
Q: In years past, just the everyday
challenge of balancing work and home.
We combined the two and now we
work together.
T
amara was leisurely riding her
bike on the river in Sacramento
when an incredible aroma lured her
into the Rio City Café where Q worked
as a sous chef. “The meal was so
impressive that I returned to have
dinner there three weeks later,” she
recalls. She returned many times
thereafter, always remaining cordial
toward Q until once day, he came to
her table and blurted out that she was
going to be his wife. Stunned, she
retorted, “If you believe I’m your wife,
you’ll need to go to God and ask Him
what it will take for you to get me.”
Needless to say, Q fulfilled her request
and won her over.
How and when did you know the
other person was "the one?”
TAMARA: Prior to meeting Q, I was
a widow and coming out of a very
uncertain season. His persona always
provided me with comfort, safety,
and the assurance that I was going to
be OK.
Q: She was what I wanted and needed
for growth and maturity.
How do you keep your relationship
strong?
TAMARA: Quality time together—
whether it’s the end of the night,
sitting in bed discussing our day, or
daycations to Dana Point or Napa.
It’s important for us to have [each
other’s] undivided attention.
Q: Prayer and my faith!
What advice would you give to other
couples?
TAMARA: Pray together and God will
help keep you together.
Q: Pray, pray, pray. Marriage is like a
large pot of stew—the longer we stay
in the pot the more tender we become.
Things will be thrown in the pot
throughout the relationship (kids, bills,
etc.) but as long as we stay in the pot
and communicate our way through, we
will end up with a nice tender marriage
full of flavor (love, peace, blessings,
joy, etc.).

was being with her. It didn’t
matter what school I went to
or how many other fish were
in the [sea]. All that mattered
was continuing to grow our
relationship.
What's your favorite thing
about your partner?
JENNIFER: His ability to put
others first and understanding
of my talent for shopping.
JARED: She knows what she’s
passionate about and does
what she loves.
What's your least favorite
thing about your partner?
JENNIFER: How loud he chews
crunchy foods and the fact
that he doesn’t think we need
a monthly budget for designer
clothes.
JARED: Her disdain for country
music. I mean, come on, we
grew up in El Dorado County,
and she seemed to love it when
we were dating. I feel duped!
What challenges have you
faced and how have you
overcome them?
JENNIFER: The loss of Jared’s
mom shortly after we were
married. Our faith in God [got
us through].
JARED: Recently, high-waisted

those were a good idea? She’s
convinced they’re fashion
worthy, and I’ve learned to

Jared &
Jennifer Sattler
El Dorado Hills
I
t was love at first sight—or at
least first grade—for Jennifer
and Jared. They met at school in
Placerville and started dating at 16,
having graduated president and vice
president of their class in 1998.
“Jared was my first boyfriend and is
the only man I’ve ever kissed!”
confesses Jennifer. Two boys and
businesses later, they’ve now been
married half their lives and are still
madly in love.
How and when did you know the
other person was "the one?”
JENNIFER: I knew Jared was a good
guy, but when I saw the way he
treated his mom I knew he was who I
wanted to be with forever.
JARED: While preparing to go off to
college, the only thing I cared about
How do you keep your
relationship strong?
JENNIFER: We talk a lot. Well,
I do. Jared does a lot of
listening!
JARED: By putting energy into
things I can add value to or
do something about and not
dwelling on the things I can’t.
What advice would you give
to other couples?
JENNIFER: Even the closest
couples need time apart to
recalibrate and recharge.
JARED: Humility is not a
weakness. Practice humility
and lifting your partner up.

What challenges have you
faced together and how have
you overcome them?
TAHNI: Opening a restaurant
(Reset: Café by Day) nine days
before a worldwide pandemic.
We’ve pivoted and gotten as
creative as we can to keep
revenue flowing, including
selling our home in 2021 and
moving into an Airstream
full-time. We’ve also secretly
faced some extreme medical
challenges with a couple of our
children. We’re not strangers
to hospitals and wondering if
your child is going to live.
JOHN: The biggest has been
health issues with children.
The second biggest has been
trying to save a business we
started at the beginning of
the pandemic after investing
everything. We’ve survived on
love for each other, creative
revenue streams, a supportive
community, and the generosity
of others.
John &
Tahni Voelz
Folsom
T
ogether for 38 years and
married for 34, Tahni and John
met in high school at a church snow
camp. “I thought he was a show-off
and he thought I was ‘loud,’” says
Tahni. John, for his part, also admits
he found her “super cute.” Despite
the attention Tahni was getting
from other boys, John was sure he
had a chance. “She had a boyfriend
she was dating at the time I met her,
but I knew his paisley golf shorts
were no match for my wit and
charm!” he says.
How and when did you know the
other person was "the one?”
TAHNI: We were high school
sweethearts. I knew he was the one
halfway through senior year.
JOHN: Way earlier than her. I saw
her walking with her then boyfriend
and said to my friend, “I’m going to
marry her.”
What's your favorite thing about
your partner?
TAHNI: How he truly loves people and
wants the best for everyone. He’s the
hardest working person I know and
never gives up.
JOHN: She’s creative in a thousand
ways, and I know she will always have
a good way of fixing a problem or
making a change. She can design a
home and organize a closet, plan a
garden layout, and lay a drip system.
She cooks better than your mom or
grandma. And she makes me laugh!
What's your least favorite thing
about your partner?
TAHNI: He eats meals hovering and
standing at the kitchen counter.
JOHN: I do things that bug her even
though they are things she does
all the time like eating chips loudly,
getting “in her way,” leaving things
on the counter, etc. Oh, and she asks
me every night if I’ve taken the dogs
potty. The answer is “yes.” Always.
How do you keep your
relationship strong?
TAHNI: We both love nature and
camping and make sure we
recharge doing that as much
as possible. Visiting all the U.S.
National Parks is on our bucket
list. We’ve checked off 19 so
far and plan to check off eight
more in 2022.
JOHN: We get away as often
as we can to camp, hike, and
chase waterfalls. We call this
“marriage insurance” and we
save up for it like we would any
other insurance.
What advice would you give
to other couples?
TAHNI: Make sure you take
time at least weekly to
communicate. Our Friday
morning breakfast date is also
our planning and calendar
meeting time. This way we
have a clear expectation of
each other. We also enjoy the
challenge of trying to make the
other one laugh.
JOHN: Talk all the time. Plan
together. Problem-solve
together. Go over your
calendars together. Eat meals
together. Say you’re sorry.
Rest as often as you can.

JUSTINE: She’s always been so
supportive of my ideas and
projects—including starting our
own bakery. She’s the perfect
half—the calm to my crazy.
What's your least favorite thing
about your partner?
CANDICE: She is very hard on
herself and often overthinks
things. I wish she could see how
great and talented she is.
JUSTINE: She’s extra stubborn
about how to do things—but
then again, so am I. We joke
that we usually want the same
outcome but each have our own
plan of how to get there.
What challenges have you
faced together and how have
you overcome them?
CANDICE: Does two years in a
pandemic, Zoom-schooling our
son, and running a small business
(Sugar Sweetery) count? We
overcome our challenges by
being a team and not giving up.
JUSTINE: We’ve gone through a
lot but both of us going fulltime
in our business six months
before the pandemic started
has been the most challenging.
We had to completely change
our business on the fly, but it all

separate relationships when
they met at a mutual friend’s
birthday party back in 2013. Despite
the circumstances, there was an
instant connection they just couldn’t
shake. Later, they found themselves
single at yet another gathering and
this time, sparks flew. “It didn’t take
long for us to start spending lots of
time together and develop a
relationship,” says Justine.
How and when did you know the
other person was "the one?”
CANDICE: [When we met the
second time] there was an instant
connection, and I knew she was
special. I fell hard and said the “L”
word very early in our relationship.
JUSTINE: I knew she was the one
when I was visiting my mom in
Texas for Thanksgiving, and she
sent us flowers and wine. My mom,
unfortunately, was diagnosed with
pancreatic cancer the very next
month (passing in February 2014)
and Candice was amazing to me,
my mother, and my family despite
having only [been dating] for six
months.
What's your favorite thing about
your partner?
CANDICE: I love that Justine gets me
How do you keep your
relationship strong?
CANDICE: We try to have balance
in our lives and do things that
bring us joy. We travel, slow
down, and eat great food,
which helps us enjoy moments
together.
JUSTINE: The biggest thing
is that we really enjoy being
around each other.
What advice would you give to
other couples?
CANDICE: Learn everything you
can about your partner. That
way you know the cues to look
for in different situations. Learn
their love language and support
them unconditionally.
JUSTINE: Cheer each other on,
go on adventures, make lots of
memories, and love each other
unconditionally.

Must-See Heritage Sites
by LINDA HOLDERNESS
For perhaps 15,000
years, Native Americans
were the lone
inhabitants between
the Sacramento River
and the Sierra Nevada.
Then, echoing the title
of J.S. Holliday’s book
on the California Gold
Rush, “the world rushed
in.” Once the cries of
“gold!” reverberated,
fortune seekers from
around the globe
flocked to California,
where the streets, it was
rumored, were paved
with the shiny metal.
Most of the newcomers
didn’t strike it rich, but
Northern California
did—in the diversity
that still enriches
our region. We’re all
Americans now, but our
communities have been
shaped by the cultures
and character of the
assorted pioneers who
came and stayed. You
can meet some of these
people and learn about
their contributions
and lifestyles at
local museums and
monuments that honor
their past. Before you
visit, check for Covidrelated
updates.
Folsom History
Museum
823 Sutter Street, Folsom, 916-985-
2707, folsomhistoricalsociety.org
Folsom’s history is a montage of
cultures, from the Nisenan to the
start of the Gold Rush, and one of
the earliest mining camps founded
by African Americans (Negro Bar
State Park across Lake Natoma
recognizes this site). The town
later became home to significant
populations of Chinese, Italian, and
Portuguese people. The museum’s
permanent exhibit, currently
being updated, takes you through
the city’s history via stories
and vignettes enhanced with
photographs, relics, and artifacts.
The rotating exhibit area features
vintage toys and is home to an
annual antique quilt show. Future
plans include a Chinese Heritage
Museum in the home of a Chinese
pioneer to tell the story of Folsom’s
19th-century Chinese community,
California’s second largest at the
time; Chung Wah Cemetery on
Forrest Street also honors these
Chinese pioneers.

Rocklin History Museum
3895 Rocklin Road, Rocklin, 916-624-3464, rocklinhistorical.org
Two prominent features of Rocklin’s history are its influx of
Finnish settlers and its renowned, blemish-free granite. Beginning
in the late 1800s, Finns owned and operated several quarries here,
supplying granite to the State Capitol and Sacramento courthouse
and to help rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake.
Finnish history is also recalled at sites like the Old Finnish
Picnic Grounds, the Finnish Temperance Hall, and Quarry Park
Adventures.
Maidu Museum & Historic Site

ca.us (select “Residents/Maidu Museum”)
Before gold seekers found California, this region was home
to the peaceful Nisenan people, who thrived for millennia as
hunters, gatherers, and fishermen along the American River.
The museum honoring them sits on the site of a one-time
Nisenan village. Inside, colorful displays and artifacts introduce
visitors to the lifestyle of these ingenious people. Outside, you
can walk in their footsteps past hundreds of grinding rocks,
4,000-year-old petroglyphs, and native plants and animals.
Coming attractions include a seedball craft (February 12) and
kids’ nature photography class (March 26).

Known from 1869-1871 as the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Farm
Colony, the site was the first Japanese colony in the U.S. and
the only silk and tea colony. The first Japanese American
citizen was born here, and the first Japanese person to die
on American soil is buried here. The original farmhouse is
restored and shaded by a huge Japanese elm the colonists
brought as a sapling. The farm’s 272 acres feature gardens, a
native plant nursery, and a traditional Japanese tea house.
Operating under the American River Conservancy, the grounds
are open to the public for interpretive and relaxing Farm Days
the first and third Saturdays of April, May, June, September,
October, and November and for private tours; check their

Together Forever
5 TIPS FOR LONG-LASTING LOVE
by MEGAN WISKUS
Relationships aren’t easy. And
as time ticks on and stress
creeps in, the flame starts to
fade. Luckily, knowing that
every couple is essentially
in the same unsteady boat
can help “normalize” your
own relationship moving from
passionate to compassionate.
But just because you’ve been
together forever doesn’t mean
the spark has to totally burn
out. Here are some easy ways to
bring a little bit of sexy back.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY
It may sound cliché but communicating and listening
really are imperative to keeping the spark alive in longterm
romantic relationships. Therese Sorrentino, LMFT
(theresesorrentinomft.com), suggests checking in with
your partner every day, even if it’s only for 20 minutes,
using a soft approach. “People respond to body language
and tone of voice before they hear the words. The way
you first approach each other will determine how the
conversation will go and whether it will be constructive,”
she says. Wondering what to talk about? Jessica
Osterday, trauma-informed life coach and brainspotting
practitioner (jessicaosterday.com), recommends open
conversations about what little actions or connections
you both miss from the early days of dating. Talk about
how you each like to give and receive love and affection—
and how you can create that together—or discuss new
things to try in the bedroom that seem exciting to you.
According to Ashlee Janzen, LMFT (ashleejanzenlmft.
com), couples should also be communicating what their
unmet needs are, which can oftentimes be the root of
many relationship problems. “This can look like not
spending enough time with your partner or feeling like
you need more help around the house. Checking in with
one another allows you to explore and share what these
desires are,” Janzen shares.

effort every day. “Even a little bit pays
off, and your significant other may
start to reciprocate in kind,” she says.
“Focus on your partner’s love language
and think about what they really like or
want. It doesn’t have to be big, so long as
you show you put some thought into it.
Write a nice note about the things you
like about them, surprise them with
a household chore they usually do,
or simply give a sincere compliment.”
Sorrentino agrees that rewinding to the
honeymoon stage of your relationship
is key. “Get back to doing what you did
when you were first dating—romantic,
thoughtful gestures and giving your
partner at least one compliment or
appreciation a day,” she says.
LET’S GET PHYSICAL
Even though sex in a long-term
partnership isn’t going to be as
passionate as the early days, it’s still
important to “do it.” Says Sorrentino:
“Don't let too much time go by without
being physically intimate. It's hard
to bring it back if you let the fire
completely burn out.” Even if you must
plan it, having sex should be a priority,
Osterday shares. If you’re struggling to
get in the mood, she suggests kissing,
as it’s important and often the first
thing to go; being precious and playful;
and locking eyes with each other.
“The right kind of eye contact often
exits when we’re fighting or we feel
frustrated and unheard. Eye contact is a
sign that you’re here, you care, you have
your partner’s attention, and you want
them,” Osterday says.
MAKE A DATE
Between work, household chores, and
parental duties, date night is probably
not at the top of your relationship todo
list. But, according to the experts,
regular, one-on-one time together—
without the kids—shouldn’t be a luxury
but rather a necessity. Sorrentino says
couples should go on “at least two dates
a month and have each partner plan
one of the dates for the other.” Another
must when you’re on a date? “Don't
discuss problems…just have fun with
each other!”
IT’S OK TO SEEK SUPPORT
Even the most doting couples who
appear happy and in love hit rough
patches. “When you find yourself
struggling in your own relationship
and having conversations without
tension and sharp words is challenging,
seeking professional help can be a
wonderful tool. It’s beneficial to have
another person available to help you
understand your patterns and make
any adjustments to enhance your
relationship,” says Janzen.

Take a Hike
LOCATED IN:
Winters.
DISTANCE:
5.1-mile loop.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Hard; heavily trafficked.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
This hike will get your
heart pumping, thanks to
a steep incline and little
shade, so bring extra
water, wear shoes with
traction, and protect
yourself from the sun. If
you feel up for it, add 2.75
miles by taking Annie’s
Loop at the junction. UC

the trail, so remember

I’ve spent a lot
of time outside
and one thing is
certain: The sun,
no matter the
month, will scorch
your skin. Even
over time without
harsh sunburns,
it’ll have an impact
on your health.
Here are a few
things you can do
to help.
Use sunscreen

WHY WE LOVE IT:
Overlooking Lake

theory by employing both traditional
and innovative techniques to help
kids develop their music skills.
Individual music lessons are just a
part of our comprehensive music
program.
Playing in a band and participating in
jam sessions are also key components
of our curriculum and music program.
When students have achieved basic
skills with an instrument, they are
eligible to join a band — and we
encourage them to do so. We match
the playing level of the student with
the appropriate band. Our students

tarting with a single learning Center in
Westwood, California, the Mathnasium
method has spread to 1000 centers
nationwide, including 10 centers in and around
Sacramento. So when you enroll your child in your
local Mathnasium, you are part of a nationwide
movement towards excellence in math for everyone!
We teach basic math facts through first-year calculus
in a friendly, fun environment where students
earn prizes for working hard. An initial assessment
determines exactly what a student knows about
math and generates a detailed curriculum which
can advance the student one grade level in just 10
weeks, at less than $10 per hour. All the student
needs to do is show up (that’s on you, parents!) and
try. We take care of the rest.
Students don’t really hate math; what they hate is
feeling left behind. Enrollment in Mathnasium can
change all that, because when students succeed
in math, their confidence soars! Parents are
always surprised when their students beg to go to
Mathnasium because it’s “fun”! So give your child a
chance and enroll today at the Mathnasium Center

ASK THE
EXPERT
by EMILY PETER-COREY
Q: WHAT IS A CONTACT
LENS EXAM?
A: If you wear or want
contacts, you'll need a
contact lens exam, in addition
to a comprehensive eye
exam, where your eye doctor
will perform special tests
to evaluate your vision with
contacts. The first test will
measure your eye surface
and determine what size and
type of contacts are best for
you. Your doctor may also do
a tear film evaluation to make
sure you have enough tears
to comfortably wear contacts.
This exam ensures the lenses
are fitting both eyes properly
and that the health of the
eyes is not harmed by the
contact lenses.

Bedroom Basics
by BELLA NOLAN
W
e put great care and concern
into the products we use on
our skin and hair—not to
mention the foods we eat—
but what about our bedroom?
Considering we spend a third of our
lives sleeping, shouldn’t we give our
bodies the same care at night that we
do during the day? “Toxins and
carcinogens have become ubiquitous
in our everyday environment. [However,
we can limit] our exposure to these
chemicals,” says Chip Huckaby from
European Sleep Design (sleepdesign.com).
Changing how we furnish our bedroom
can improve our quality of sleep and give
our planet a little boost, too!
“Quality sleep is the key to a healthy
life,” says Brandy Alvis from Sage Sleep
Organics (sagesleeporganics.com).

for overall health, hygiene, and the
environment. When we sleep, our body
works hard to detox. Our livers and
guts come to life, and our pores begin
to open. This also means we’re pulling
things into our body, so it’s important
to think about what’s touching our
skin. In other words, when materials
and products touch us for hours, our
system absorbs them. According to
Huckaby, many manufacturers tend to
use harmful ingredients wrapped in
synthetic fibers, which are then treated
with flame-retardant chemicals—
ingredients that oxidize and become
the unhealthy dust that we breathe
in for 7-8 hours every night. So,
remember: The right pillow and some
sheets can be just as much a part of
self-care as a face mask or spa day!

When thinking about making ecofriendly
choices in the bedroom, a
great place to start is with a mattress.
Since landfills are often filled with
plastic from them, switching to natural
materials (think natural latex foam,
organic cotton, and merino wool) help
reduce our carbon footprint. Huckaby
explains that wool acts as a natural fire
barrier and reduces the number of
harsh chemicals we come into contact
with at night. Another benefit from
switching over to an organic mattress?
The ingredients are renewable,
biodegradable, and last longer than
synthetic materials, so we’re taking
care of ourselves, the planet, and
making a solid financial investment!
Huckaby suggests that people looking
to decorate their bedroom opt for
“American-made, solid hardwood
furniture that has a Greenguard and
FCS certification.”
If looking to pick and choose, swapping
out bedding is a good place to start,
advises Alvis. Sleeping in breathable,
natural fibers helps with temperature
control, uninterrupted rest, and are
more hygienic than synthetic fibers
that trap moistures. Not only will
your skin benefit, but so will the
environment! And should organic
sheets or mattresses end up in a
landfill, they will disintegrate and go
back to the earth in which they came,
explains Alvis. It’s a win-win! Alvis
recommends Sage Sleep’s side sleeper
pillow, which can be used in any
sleeping position, or any of their other
customizable, 100% natural, and longlasting
pillows.
Alvis also encourages consumers to
think about “good, all-natural fiber
sheets, [which] are a tremendous
investment” but well worth it. Take
a moment to assess yours. Are they
cotton or made of natural materials?
“Conventional cotton accounts for 25%
of all pesticides used worldwide,” says
Ashley Angello, public relations and
communications consultant at Coyuchi
(coyuchi.com) whose eco-friendly
products begin with 100% organic
fibers and are sold at various retailers
throughout the region. Angello
recommends the brand’s signature
sheets, 300-thread count percale,
which have a crisp and cool feel, or
their super soft relaxed sateen sheets.
Both are made to last, which keeps
them out of landfills and are especially
eco-friendly, “since they’re made using
[entirely] organic materials, which
supports soil health and by extension, a
healthy planet.”

CHINESE
Eight major schools of
Chinese cuisine exist—
dating back thousands of
years—that have led to the
development of unique foods
from every corner of China.
They include Anhui (earthy,
slightly sweet), Sichuan (spicy,
mouth-numbing), Hunan
(spicy, sour), Shandong (salty,
crispy), Jiangsu (moderately
sweet and salty), Zhejiang
(mellow, fresh), Fujian (light,
fresh), and Cantonese
(mild, sweetish). Which food
adventure will you choose?
KEY FLAVORS: Light and dark

white rice vinegar, fermented
black beans, egg noodles,
ginger, garlic, green onions
Sweet & Sour Pork
The late renowned chef from Hong Kong,
Leung King, concocted this sweet and
sour sauce recipe: white rice vinegar,
salt, Chinese brown candy, ketchup,
Worcestershire sauce, and dark soy
sauce. This basically serves as the basis
of the beloved Chinese dish we know and
love today. Hop Sing Palace serves
up deep-fried pieces of pork stirred into
their own tangy yet tantalizing sauce
accompanied by sweet chunks of tender
pineapple. Crispy, juicy, tender, and saucy,
this dish checks all the right boxes. 805

Peking Duck
Originally a dish from Beijing,
Peking duck has been prepared
since the Imperial Era—that’s
the same period as the
Roman empire, for context.
Characterized by thin, crispy
skin on juicy slices of meat and
typically served with a plum
sauce and thin pancakes, the
dish has all the makings of a
royal feast. The rendition at
Fortune Garden Chinese
Restaurant boasts boneless
poultry served with hoisin sauce
and soft buns, leading to an
authentic food adventure that
won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Chicken Chow Mein
A universal crowd pleaser, you really
can’t go wrong with chow mein no
matter which part of the world you’re
in. From India to the UK, you can always
expect noodles that are stir-fried
and tossed in soy sauce, veggies,
and your meat of choice. Folsom
Palace makes a pretty mean chicken
chow mein that consists of perfectly
seasoned al dente noodles combined
with an abundance of veggies (red and
white cabbage, green onions, carrots)
and said meat to form a heaping pile of
satisfaction. 1169 Riley Street, Folsom

Kung Pao Chicken
Who doesn’t love Kung Pao? Spicy, stirfried
cubes of chicken, crunchy peanuts,
fresh veg, and chili peppers (or Sichuan
peppercorns) are probably the best thing
to come out of the Sichuan Provence in
China. Sunny Garden Restaurant
always comes through with their kung
pao chicken, served with bell peppers,
zucchini, lots of peanuts, and a sauce to
beat all other sauces. 25085 Blue Ravine

Dim Sum
Good things indeed come in small packages especially
when it comes to dim sum—originally a snack of small food
items meant to be had with tea. With over a thousand dim
sum dishes in existence today it’s easy to get lost in all the
amazing variety (think: pork belly, chili lamb, seafood) our
region affords us. But one we keep going back to is Fat’s
Asia Bistro’s dim sum basket. Dig into shrimp, pork shu
mei, and chicken pot stickers served hot and steaming in
a dainty basket to make your dim sum dreams come true.

Mapo Tofu with Pork
Another Sichuan favorite is mapo
tofu—a spicy dish that’s anything
but boring. The version at Rice
Express features silken, soft tofu
and minced pork alongside ginger,
garlic, green onions, and a housemade
special sauce that’s bright and
bold in flavor. This is the perfect plate
if you’re looking for an entrée that’s
fiery and protein packed. 25004 Blue

Mongolian Beef
A hearty but simple dish,
Mongolian beef is thin, tender
slices of flank steak wok-fried
with onions, scallions, and
sometimes veggies. Paired
with steamed rice, it can be as
wholesome as it is delicious.
If this is your favorite dish
and you’d want nothing more
than to eat it for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner, then we
recommend Iron Wok to get
your fix. They have gigantic
servings of it that will leave
you satiated and smiling all
day long. 541 Main Street,

Egg Foo Young
If you’ve never had
egg foo young, you’re
missing out! This soft,
savory Cantonese
omelet dish is served in
a sweet and sour sauce,
oftentimes with small
veggies. China City
Chinese Restaurant
takes some time to
prepare this delicate
dish (so arrive early and
bring your appetite)
but it’s well worth the
wait. Choose from veg,
shrimp, chicken, BBQ
pork or the house egg
foo young and have
yourself a delightful
dinner (and breakfast;
thereafter!). 4100

Comprised of the five major
tastes—sweet, sour, salty,
creamy, and hot—Thai food
is a complex cuisine that
sparkles with personality.
Traditionally, it loosely falls
into four categories: tom
(boiled dishes), yam (spicy
salads), tam (pounded foods),
and gaeng (curries). Meals
are typically centered around
a big bowl of sweet-smelling,
long-graine jasmine rice with a
THAI
Wonton Soup
Despite its simplicity, it’s hard to get
wonton soup right—no one really wants
salt water with a single, sad, hollow
dumpling, do they? So, when you find
a place that has perfected the recipe
you keep going back for more—as is
the case with Hong Kong Inn. Their
house wonton soup is packed with
veggies, pork, chicken, and shrimp in
the most flavorful, fragrant clear broth.
Funny how something so simple can
be so divine. 2851 Ray Lawyer Drive,

Tom Yum
This complexly flavored Thai soups
two core flavors are sour (from lime
leaves, lime juice, and lemongrass)
and spicy (from red chilies and
galangal). Blended with fish sauce
and chicken stock, it's one of the
more popular picks at Pinto Thai

you find tucked into the beloved
broth? Fresh tomatoes, white
mushrooms, white onions, cilantro,
scallions, and shrimp or chicken.

Pad Thai
Probably the most widely
known of all the Thai dishes,
this approachable entrée
(commonly consumed as
street food in Thailand) is
ideal for anyone unfamiliar,
or apprehensive, about the
cuisine. Though most versions
are somewhat similar and
straightforward, the offering
at Folsom Thai Cuisine
comes complete with stirfried
rice noodles, scrambled
eggs, scallions, and tofu in
a homemade sauce that
simmers for up to six hours.
The ample portion (hello,
leftovers!) is topped with
fresh bean sprouts, ground
peanuts, and lime wedges for
an extra element of crunch
and tanginess. Not too sweet
and not too spicy, it’s an
enjoyable, palate-pleasing
entrée for all. 2371 Iron Point

Fresh mint leaves, red and green onions, cilantro,
and your choice of protein (ground pork, beef,
chicken, or tofu) is hand tossed with chili flakes,
lime juice, fish sauce, and rice powder in this
refreshingly tangy meat salad with contrasting
textures. Hailing from Northeast Thailand—where
the owner and chef of My Thai Kitchen,
Lamyai “Joy” Palmer, is from—it’s one of the
restaurant’s signature dishes and is a true
reflection of Palmer’s background and culinary
experience. Served with sticky rice, it can be
made mild or spicy and is sure to become a new
Thai food favorite. 1465 Eureka Road, Suite 140,

Pad Kee Mao
(Drunken Noodles)
Fans of spice will want to give the
Pad Kee Mao, aka Drunken Noodles,
a try at Thai Paradise. Chilies
and jalapeños give the dish its
main fiery taste, while garlic, basil,
veggies (green beans, onions, snow
peas, red bell peppers, and bean
sprouts), and a touch of sugar
help cool the palate. Pan-fried
with chewy flat rice noodles, this
quintessential, well-loved entrée
will leave you drunk in love and is

Som Tum (Green
Papaya Salad)
Som Tum is an under-the-radar
sweet and notoriously spicy
green papaya salad that’s also
popular in Laos cooking. At
Ruen Thai Restaurant,
the colorful dish comes with
an abundance of fresh Thai
chilies balanced by palm sugar,
garlic, fish sauce, roasted then
crushed peanuts, lime juice,
cherry tomatoes, shredded
green papaya, green beans,
and carrots. The final product
is a dish that’s simultaneously
salty, sweet, spicy, sour, and
bitter—all the flavors that
define Thai cuisine. A quick note
about those chilies: They’re
atomic, so unless your palate is
accustomed to real Thai spice,
order accordingly. 1470 Eureka

Pineapple Fried Rice
Fried rice is always a favorite, but
have you experienced pineapple
fried rice? At The River Thai
Cuisine, the crowd-pleasing plate
not only comes with the juicy fruit
but also eggs, white onions, scallions,
tomatoes, carrots, and crunchy
cashews—all stir-fried with jasmine
rice, your choice of protein (chicken,
pork, prawns, or crab meat), mild
yellow curry powder, and the
restaurant’s signature sauce. Equally
savory and sweet, it’s what you
should order if you’re curious about
Thai cuisine but scared of spice. 424

Red Curry
When it comes to Thai curries, you
literally have a rainbow of flavors,
and colors, to pick from (green,
yellow, and red). The latter is a fiery
favorite, especially at Thai Basil,
and for good reason. Tender sliced
chicken breast is simmered with
bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and
Thai basil in a slightly sweet, slightly
spicy, and just salty enough coconut
milk red curry—comprised of chili
peppers, garlic, cumin, coriander,
lemongrass, shallots, galangal,
shrimp paste, kaffir lime zest,
and salt. Ladled over a mountain
of jasmine rice, it’s Thai comfort
food at its finest. 1613 Douglas

Chicken Khao Soi
This Northern Thai-inspired dish is
chock-full of flavors and textures—
thanks to both steamed, springy egg
noodles and crispy egg noodles, fried
onions, fresh ginger, coconut milk,
broccoli, your choice of protein, and
rich but relatively mild massaman
curry paste. Though rarely seen on
menus around our region, you can
snag a bowl—a really good one (!)—
at Thai Unique. To quote Andy
Ricker—American chef, restaurateur,
and cookery writer, known for his
skill and expertise in Northern Thai
cuisine—it’s “exotic without being
weird and, most important, completely
delicious.” 1160 Broadway, Placerville,

KOREAN
Largely based on rice, vegetables, seafood, tofu, beef, and pork,
Korean food covers everything from royal court cuisine recipes
to modern-day fusion. Items like kimchi, bibimbap, and bulgogi
have taken the culinary world by storm recently but there are
even more, intriguing delicacies like Korean fried chicken, Korean
stew, and red rice cakes that are waiting to be explored.

Korean fried chicken is where it’s at! Tang nyum is traditional Korean fried chicken
that’s doused in a sweet and spicy sauce of gochujang (red chili paste), garlic, sugar,
and other spices, making this Korean “fast food” unlike any other iteration of fried
chicken. Ttobongee Chicken’s version is mildly spicy, always crispy, and sinfully
good. Don’t forget to try their other fried chicken dishes, too! *2791 East Bidwell

and taken one gigantic
bite after another? If
not, what are you waiting

literally means “mixing

eyes and the palate, and
Teriyaki Town makes
a must-have mouthful
with their bibimbap of
beef, assorted vegetables

Bánh Xèo (Vietnamese Crêpe)
If you thought pancakes were always sweet and eaten at breakfast, then
you’ve never experienced Bánh Xèo before. Essentially a savory, crispy,
golden-brown crêpe made from a blend of rice flour, turmeric, and coconut
cream, the offering at Pho Cali is filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts.
The hands-on starter is served alongside a big plate of mixed greens and
herbs. To eat: Cut off a bite-sized piece and wrap it in a similarly sized piece of
lettuce, add herbs, and spoon some of the accompanying dipping sauce on top.

Gỏi Cuốn (Spring Rolls)
It doesn’t have to be sunny and
warm to enjoy a beloved spring
roll. No matter the weather, this
nutritious starter—a staple on most
Vietnamese food menus—is always
a wonderful way to kick off your
meal. Made of rehydrated rice paper
and filled with rice vermicelli, raw
vegetables, and fresh herbs, with
your pick of protein (at Pho Tahoe
they feature BBQ pork and prawns),

rolls are best dipped

A fusion of two
cultures—Vietnamese
and French—the first

varieties (multiple
types of proteins and
condiments), but the
version at Bo Urban

baguette (baked
in-house then toasted)
that’s topped with a
creamy sauce, pickled
carrots and jalapeños,
cilantro, lettuce,
tomatoes, onions, and

Phở
Considered Vietnam’s national dish,
phở (pronounced “fuh”) is a delicate,
delicious soup known for its hearty,
nutrient-rich broth made by boiling
beef bones for several hours alongside
ginger, onions, and lots of aromatic
spices (star anise, cardamom, fennel
seeds, and cinnamon). At Pho Mimi,
your bowl arrives piping hot with rice
noodles, meat (the “Pho Mimi Special”—
featuring thinly sliced strips of rare
flank, fat brisket, tendon, tripe, and
meatballs—is always a pho-vorite),
white onions, green onions, and cilantro.
Adjust the pho to your flavor preference
by adding condiments like hoisin sauce,

like bean sprouts, Thai basil, lime/lemon

JAPAN
Traditional Japanese
cuisine is based on rice
with an emphasis on fresh,
seasonal ingredients
that translate to raw fish
offerings like sushi and
sashimi, flavorful broths,
and deep-fried vegetables.
Another characteristic of
the cuisine is umami or
savoriness—one of the
five basic tastes (along
with sweetness, sourness,
saltiness, and bitterness).
So, no matter the dish,
you’re always assured of an
elegant, pure, and visually
stunning meal that sparks
joy in more ways than one.

soy sauce or miso, with toppings
like sliced pork, nori, and scallions.
What makes ramen so alluring are
the endless possibilities with all

If you’re stumped with the difference between sushi and

but sushi comes with rice and sashimi doesn’t. As you know,

from around here and you probably won’t get through the
gamut of amazing sushi and sashimi within one lifetime. But

Chirashi means “scattered,” which is a good way
to describe this dish of rice combined with half
a dozen fish, veg, and other toppings of your
choice. Sound familiar? That’s because it’s very
similar to poke (Hawaiian dish of rice, fish, sauces,
and toppings) minus the sweet sauces. This means
that you get to taste all those fresh flavors of
the sea without the distraction of oftentimes
overpowering sauces. Tang’s Sushi promises—
and delivers—a delectable chef’s special selection
of sashimi over rice that’ll make chirashi your new
favorite fish dish. 1426 Blue Oaks Boulevard, Suite
100, Roseville, 916-781-0807, tangsushi.com
Udon
Udon is a hearty noodle if ever there was one. Thick and made
from wheat flour, udon noodle soup can be a panacea for
almost anything. Dunk your favorite protein in it and you’ve got
a savory soup for the soul. Amerikan Ichi’s rendition offers
said udon noodles, nourishing vegetables, and your choice
of beef, chicken, or shrimp that swim blissfully in a flavorful
Japanese broth. 1234 Broadway, Suite A, Placerville, 530-621-
2100, amerikanichi.com
Sukiyaki
This Japanese hot pot of meat and veg falls under the comfort food
category of Japanese cuisine. Meat is slow-cooked or simmered (usually
at your table) alongside vegetables and other ingredients in a shallow
iron pot in the always intoxicating mix of soy sauce, sugar, and mirin.
Umi Sushi has mastered their sukiyaki broth with the perfect balance
of sweet and salty (attaining the aforementioned “umami”) and doesn’t
skimp on the filling ingredients of beef or chicken, tofu, yam noodles, and
seasonal fresh veggies. 107 South Harding Boulevard, Suite A, Roseville,

Teriyaki
An absolute crowd-pleaser, teriyaki delights young and old alike. What’s not to
like? Fish or meat is grilled and glazed in the most addictive sauce containing
mirin and sugar. There are tons of teriyaki places to try in our region, so when
you happen to come across one like Kazoku Teriyaki & More that gets it
right each time, you make a beeline for it. Whether you try the sticky-sweet
goodness in a bowl, bento box, or plate, you’re sure to be pleased, but it’s the
Teriyaki Noodles that keep us coming back! 5131 Foothills Boulevard, Suite 1,

Boba Tea
If you haven’t jumped on
the boba (aka, bubble tea)
bandwagon yet, you’re
missing out. The tea-based
drink with Taiwanese origins
can be made with milk or
without and consists of tea

oolong) and chewy tapioca
balls ("boba" or "pearls"),
which are slurped through
oversized straws.

Agedashi Tofu
A subtle dish, agedashi tofu is made using
firm tofu that’s coated with potato starch
and deep-fried until golden-brown to create
a crisp outer shell. It’s then served in a hot,
light sauce made of dashi, mirin, and shoyu
(Japanese soy sauce) to create a wellbalanced,
exotic flavor profile that’s silky
on the palate and easy on the eyes. Kobe
Sushi & Fusion delivers all the above
with their sauce on the side and a dusting
of green onions, daikon radish, and bonito
flakes (smoked skipjack tuna) for the ultimate
appetizer. 3300 Coach Lane, Cameron Park,

Lobster Roll
There’s nothing more pleasing
than sushi that allows its
seafood to shine. This is the
case with Mikasa Asian
Fusion’s lobster roll—deluxe
deep-fried lobster, chili, soy,
spicy crab, seared asparagus,
special sauces, and a searing
on top. Did we mention you also
get a large lobster shell as an
accompaniment? It’s indulgent
to say the least. Not to mention,
totally satisfying for lobster lovers
everywhere. 3000 Green Valley

Van Hulzen Financial Advisors

In my own life, I understand the emotions
that come with uncertainty and an unknown
road. Early in my career as a financial
advisor, my wife and I were approached to
be the future caregivers to my brother-in-law
who has a learning disability. We agreed, but
quickly learned we were not well prepared for
the challenges that would come. This inspired me
to pursue my true passion helping other families,
like mine, understand their options. Knowing the
busyness, concerns, and joys that are inherent to
families with complex care needs, I can develop
relationships on a more personal level.
Early in the discovery process, I found a hole
in traditional service models available to this
community by asking parents a simple question.
When’s the last time you went on a vacation
without your child? Many looked at me with
confusion, what do you mean? Parents are required
to be so focused on the complex care needs of
their loved one, they haven’t had an opportunity to
care for themselves.
So, we flipped the traditional model on its head by
intentionally focusing on the parents first, rather
than the child first. Our goal is to help parents
recapture their own hopes AND dreams AND to
remove the fear of an unknown future caregiver.
This works beautifully because to help parents
achieve their goals, we must also solve for the
child’s complex care needs as well. By putting the
parents first, we are ensuring the parents lives and
wellbeing are participants in the family plan, rather
than neglected bystanders.
We’ve solved this complex problem through our
own GONE transition planning and financial planning
services to allow parents to dream dreams they’ve
not had in years.
For those ready, my first question to you is, where
do you want to vacation to?

Acrowd of
people lined
the sidewalk
at the
entrance of an
unsuspecting
brick building at 1226
Lincoln Way in Auburn…
eager to secure a spot at
the bar since reservations
had filled. Soon enough,
at exactly 5 p.m., we were
greeted into Restaurant
Josephine.
The ambiance is a
cross between the Gold
Rush Era and mid-century
France—raw brick
revealing itself through
fleur-de-lis wallpaper,
romantic lighting, emerald
velvet booths, and granite
tabletops. Think Parisian
fashion atop a historic
soul.
The co-owner and
pastry chef, Courtney
McDonald, kindly showed
my plus one and me in.
Slipping us in at a table
directly in front of the
open kitchen, we could
see her husband and
head chef, Eric Alexander,
masterfully work.
We started with our
server’s recommendation:
creamy mushroom toast.
The texture from four
different mushroom
varieties alongside the
crunch of the toast, sherry
cream sauce, and melted
warmth of the farmraised
cheese was simply
beautiful.

America (where the couple met and
both graduated) and his 13 years as

with the entrées, boasting seasonal,
locally sourced ingredients with
French flair and Eastern European
accents.
First, the grilled Niman Ranch pork
chop. Perfectly cooked with a juicy,
pink center and slightly charred and
smoky exterior—then served alongside
an apple, bacon, prune, celery, and
walnut relish and creamed cabbage—it
was one of the best cuts of meat I’ve
ever eaten. The sweetness of the apple
paired with the saltiness of the bacon
and delicate texture of the pork could
only be made more perfect by the
slightly tangy notes of the relish and
velvety cabbage.
The crispy “iron” half chicken was
a pleasant contrast to the pork chop.
Its slightly smoky yet delicate flavor
was heightened by the grilled lemon,
watercress, and fines herbes sauce.

Served with grilled bread and
garlic purée, every piece was
moist, tender, and slipped right off
the bone.
For the sides: charred Brussels
sprouts with pomegranate
molasses and the mac n mimolette,
which exuded melted cheese as we
pulled each creamy bite of comfort
into our mouths.
Finally, it was time for
dessert. We chose the mandarin
“creamsicle.” The well-crafted
base of butterscotch parfait and
pistachio shortbread topped with
Mac N Mimolette
a delicate scoop of mandarin sorbet
and citrus confit was a wonderful, light
ending to a fabulous dinner.

Their address may say Folsom, but once you walk through the doors of
Chant’el Café you’re transported to a beautiful European city. The chandeliers,
flowers, and Instagramable selfie wall are all perfect touches to lead you
straight to their heavenly food. If you’re indecisive like me, then you’re going
to have to order more than one thing and probably some food to go! Here
are a few suggestions, though. I highly recommend the Syrniki (farmer’s
cheese pancakes). They come topped with either strawberry jam and sour
cream; condensed milk and fresh fruit; or chocolate, caramel, and nuts.
I’ll make it easy, and tell you to order all three. You should also try one of
their croissants; the butter one serves as the base to their beloved Salmon
Croissant Sandwich and is baked fresh daily (along with everything else in
their picture-perfect pastry case—cakes, tarts, mousses, and more). It’s no
wonder the scent of warm baked goods wafts your way upon entering. Your
experience wouldn’t be complete without a fresh cup of coffee, lovingly made
Raspberry Latte (topped with freeze-dried raspberries for a touch of tartness
and photo-ready finish), or fresh fruit tea. Cozy up and while away the day…
European style!

Drive-thrus have

and shows commitment to a healthier lifestyle. When it
comes to their good-for-you grub, there’s something

eatery offers a variety of organic and non-GMO
food and beverages—including favorites like The
Amy (double veggie patty, double cheese, lettuce,

In addition to the café’s cozy, quirky vibe and lovingly

Where We Live
“Love, creativity, and opportunity is in
the air. Take it in and do your thing.”
—Lenny Kravitz
SMELL
THE
ROSES
5 Fun Facts
1
Fossil evidence found
in Colorado suggests
that roses have been in
existence for at least 35
million years; the oldest
living rose is 1,000 years
old and grows on a wall
of Germany’s Hildesheim
Cathedral.
2
The Rose Bowl Parade
started as a procession
of flower-covered
carriages in 1890 as a
celebration of California’s
mild winter climate.
3
The fruit of a rose plant
is known as rose hip
and is a good source of
vitamin C.
4
There are about 100
species of roses—which
vary in color, shape, and
climate preference—but
hybrid tea roses are the
most common.
5
Wondering which color
to give in your next
bouquet? Red roses
signify "love," pink ones
"grace," peach "modesty,"
yellow “friendship,” and
orange "fascination."
