Often, people ask me what CEM stands for.It is my family member’s initials, including mydaughter, Mothei, together with whom we had runthe restaurant business. The aim of the publishingbusiness is to build and preserve, not only SouthAfrican family legacies, but those of other familiesacross the African continent. And to encourageAfricans to write their own stories and preservetheir heritage. It also seeks to produce authenticcultural and heritage books that are professionallydesigned and can compete in the internationalbook market.Finally, the objective of CEM Publishers is toput in place an ecosystem that makes bookpublishing affordable and accessible to all. Since2009, I have published 24 titles by 16 independentauthors, and one of these – Thembeka CynthiaSesi from Dobsonville, Soweto – won the SALBAward for 2016-2017 in the indigenous languagescategory, for isiXhosa Poems. Sesi published herfirst book aged 61, and her second book, IsiphoXhosa Poems Volume II, won the award at the age of66.16
