I was pleased to see us continue 

our unbeaten run at Harrogate 

last Tuesday. The fact that many 

of us were slightly disappointed to 

leave north Yorkshire with a point 

underlines the progression we have 

made in recent months. To earn 25 

points from a possible 27 is quite 

outstanding. The positive mood 

around the club, training ground and 

town is palpable as we head into the 

final 19 games of the season. 

I’m sure you will give a warm, 

encouraging welcome to our two new 

loan signings, Matty Longstaff and 

Jamie Murphy. 

Our CEO, David Sharpe, and head of 

recruitment, Simon Clough, worked 

hard to secure the services of these 

two players. 

The squad certainly appears much 

stronger now, in its depth and quality, 

than it was at the start of the transfer 

window. It’s also heartening to see 

the majority of our squad available in 

the last three months of the season. 

To see James Perch back on the 

field in our last home game against 

Leyton Orient, and the reception our 

supporters gave him after coming on 

as a substitute, was terrific to view 

and I’m so pleased to see his early 

return to action. 

Thank you to you all for your 

continued support towards the club, 

the players and to Nigel and his staff. 

If we are to fulfil our ambitions of 

success this season it will be because 

of a collective effort from every single

Leyton Orient and Harrogate Town, 

have been very difficult but we’ve 

managed to keep two clean sheets 

and earn a total of four points. 

We were delighted to set a new club 

record of eight successive league 

victories against Orient in our last 

home league game. It was especially 

remarkable to do it in the conditions 

in which the game was played. 

Against Harrogate a week ago, we 

had the outstanding chance of the 

game to win it. There were a few 

chances and skirmishes at both ends 

for both teams to win it, but when 

you get as good an opportunity as we 

had through Jordan Bowery in the 

second half, then we really should 

have won the game 1-0. 

We can welcome Faz Rawson back 

today following suspension and new 

signings Jamie Murphy and Matty 

Longstaff are also available for us 

this evening. George Lapslie will be 

a few weeks away from returning. 

The two new players will come 

and freshen things up, which will 

be important when we’re playing 

Saturday and then Tuesday. 

David and Simon worked very long 

hours in the office on deadline day 

and we were thrilled with the two 

players who we brought in. 

We’re heartened to secure JJ on 

a permanent deal, Lucas Akins 

and Kieran Wallace on permanent 

The quality of the aforementioned 

signings reflect our recent form, 

with players interesting in joining 

us now we have an opportunity of 

challenging for promotion.

Forward Jordan Bowery has been 

named the Stags’ Player of the 

Month for January. 

The Mansfield number nine received 

47% of the supporters’ vote. 

In a perfect month in the league for 

the Stags, winning four out of four 

available matches, Bowery recorded 

three goals and two assists. 

The club set a new record of eight 

successive league victories in 

January. 

Talented midfielder Ryan Stirk 

finished second in the poll, with 27%. 

Full back Stephen McLaughlin 

finished third, the impressive 

Irishman recorded 8% of the vote.

Mansfield Town’s latest signings, 

attacker Jamie Murphy and 

midfielder Matty Longstaff, have 

been settling into life at Mansfield 

after signing on deadline day. 

The pair join the club on loan until 

the rest of the season from Hibernian 

and Newcastle United, respectively. 

A product of the Magpies’ academy, 

Longstaff joins the Stags with good 

pedigree having scored twice for 

the Toon in 14 Premier League 

appearances. 

The 21-year-old made his debut 

for United in August 2019 against 

Leicester City in the EFL Cup. 

Two months later, the midfielder 

secured a Premier League Goal of 

the Month award for an outstanding 

strike against Manchester United at 

St. James’ Park. 

Matty scored against the Red Devils 

for a second time in the reverse 

fixture at Old Trafford. 

The Rotherham-born maestro signed 

a contract extension with Newcastle 

at the end of the 19-20 season, 

playing alongside his older brother 

Sean. 

STAGS LAND DEADLINE DAY DUO 

On his first few days’ training with the 

Stags Matty said: “It’s been great. 

“The manager has been great. It’s 

good to meet all my teammates and 

I’ve really enjoyed training, 

“It was good to get playing with 

them. 

“I’m looking forward to the rest of the 

season.” 

Mansfield’s second deadline day 

addition, Jamie Murphy, reunites 

with Stags’ boss Nigel Clough who he 

played under at both Sheffield United 

and Burton Albion. 

The former Scottish international 

began his career at Motherwell, 

making his debut in 2006 before 

recording a further 175 appearances. 

Jamie, who can also play in midfield, 

scored 34 times for the Steelmen, 

becoming the club’s all-time top 

goalscorer in European football. 

The Glaswegian left his homeland 

in 2013, swapping Edinburgh for 

south Yorkshire as he joined Sheffield 

United on a permanent deal. 

After two seasons with the Blades, 

the Glasgow-born wideman joined 

Brighton & Hove Albion. In the 2016- 

17 season, Murphy made 37 league 

appearances – scoring six goals - as 

Brighton gained promotion to the 

Premier League. 

After a year-and-a-half in the English 

topflight, the midfielder signed for 

Glasgow Rangers where he spent 

three years. During that time he 

represented the club in the qualifying 

stages of the Champions League. 

A loan spell at Burton Albion in 

2020 saw him again link up with 

Stags’ chief Nigel Clough. Under the 

manager, Jamie scored seven times 

in just ten matches for the Brewers. 

On working again with the gaffer, 

Jamie said: “Obviously, having 

worked with the manager before I 

knew what he wants and [I’m excited] 

for the opportunity to come down [to 

England] and have a new challenge,” 

said the forward. 

“He’s good. He’s very fair. If you work 

hard for him then he’ll work hard for 

you on and off the pitch. 

“You want to repay him. You want to 

repay all the staff because they’re all 

great, hopefully I can do that.”

Deakin, provides an update on life at 

the academy… 

feel that the team is developing 

I as the weeks go on. I think we’re 

getting stronger now, especially 

because we are having more time 

with each other. 

The bond us players have is great, 

and our fitness is improving. We’ve 

had a couple of games postponed 

recently so it will be interesting to 

see if we can get back to how we 

were playing before the break over 

Christmas. 

Personally, I think I started off the 

season a bit shaky, but I got my 

form up to top standard throughout 

winter. 

If I’m wanting to be up there with the 

first team, then I’ve got to keep that 

form up. That’s what motivates me 

the most. 

The people around me help. The 

staff help me with shooting drills, 

my combination and hold-up play. It 

would be disappointing if the form 

drops as everyone puts in a lot of 

effort to make sure I have the best 

chance of becoming a good player. 

We go through a lot of specific 

positions that both me and the rest of 

the team should be taking up. 

My hold-up play is something that 

I’ve been working on with the 

coaches. It is important part of my 

position as a striker. In training, we 

practice fizzing balls into me and 

dealing with it. If we don’t look after 

it there, at the top end of the pitch, 

then we don’t have a chance of 

scoring. 

We get taught that it’s not a selfish 

sport and that we’ve got to be there 

for our teammates and give them 

opportunities to score as well. 

Preparation is key. We all have to 

make sure we eat and sleep right the 

day before games and make sure our 

mentality is right. 

We’re all hoping to win as many 

games as we can between now 

and the end of the season. 

We know some games 

are going to be harder 

than others but 

we’re working hard. 

I want to make 

sure I’m providing 

goals and assists 

again. Helping 

the team is 

the most 

important 

thing for me.

PEAFIELD LANE WIN 

JOHN RADFORD TROPHY 

Peafield Lane Primary School have 

won the inaugural John Radford 

Trophy, organised by Football in 

the Community. 

Monday 31 January saw the John 

Radford Trophy finals take place 

at RH Academy, the club’s training 

ground. After two qualifying rounds, 

Primary School, Peafield Lane 

Academy, Berry Hill Primary School 

and Croft Primary School made it to 

the finals of the competition. All four 

schools were very deserving of their 

place, after delivering some fantastic 

performances in the previous 

qualifying rounds. 

Each team played each other twice in 

a round-robin format, the team with 

the most points at the end took home 

the trophy. 

After the first three rounds of fixtures, 

Peafield and Croft were tied at the 

top with six points each, Berry Hill 

had four and Abbey were in fourth 

place with one. Peafield began the 

finals with a strong 4-0 victory against 

Abbey but became stuck against 

Berry Hill in a highly-competitive 

game, Berry Hill won the clash 2-1. 

Croft started strong with two victories

out of three, maintaining their record 

as the only unbeaten side in the 

tournament. 

In the end, Peafield Lane were 

crowned as champions and winners 

of the John Radford Trophy, as they 

marched on to another two wins and 

a draw, defeating Croft in the final 

game. Peafield topped the table with 

13 points, Berry Hill finished closely 

behind on 11 points. Croft took third 

place with nine points and Abbey 

came fourth with one. 

Community manager Gary Shaw 

shared his thoughts on the Finals. 

“This was the most competitive this 

tournament has ever been since we 

started it eight years ago, that is a 

huge credit to all teams involved,” 

he said. 

“It really could have gone either way 

and it was an exciting watch, Peafield, 

Berry Hill and Croft all could have 

won it in the last fixture, which you 

love to see. 

“My congratulations go to Peafield, 

who get to take our trophy home this 

year.”

Nightingale stated how much it 

meant for the players, after the 

tournament had been called off for 

the past few years due to Covid-19. 

“They have been looking forward to 

it,” said Mr. Nightingale. 

“They’ve been getting ready and 

talking about it all day, so they’ve 

been absolutely buzzing and are 

really pleased to win it.”

reflects on her team’s derby day loss 

to promotion rivals Chesterfield… 

The game last weekend was a bit of 

a disappointing day for us. I don’t 

think that 3-0 was a fair reflection 

of the match, we had a lot of 

possession and we played up until 

a point in the game. 

We lacked creativity throughout but, 

credit to Chesterfield they had three 

shots and scored three goals. They 

were clinical and we weren’t, it just 

didn’t come off for us on Sunday and 

that will be something that needs to 

be worked on in training. There were 

a few opportunities that we didn’t 

quite turn into chances, but we’ve 

worked on that in training since 

and hope to make the most of our 

positive moments in the next game. 

We’re relying on other teams slipping 

up now if we’re to get promoted 

but there are four or five teams in a 

similar position. We’ve got plenty to 

play for and plenty to push on for. 

We spent a couple of days analysing 

what we could have done differently 

in the Chesterfield match, but I think 

it just wasn’t our day. 

We’re still a good team. There are 

elements that we are doing well and 

I think the most important thing will 

be to highlight those aspects. 

Games are coming thick and fast and 

to move on from the loss we must 

think positively. We can’t change the 

past, but we can learn from it and 

that’s the mentality that I’ll be instil 

into our squad. 

We have a cup game this week 

against a team in a lower division, 

Loughborough. No game is a given, 

despite being in a higher division 

we must approach the game 

professionally. As long as we work 

hard, we should come through the 

match with a win. 

With regards to the league, 

it is a really competitive 

league this season, 

everyone can beat 

everyone. 

We’ve just got to look 

at what we control. 

Promotion is still 

the aim, it’s what we 

want. Hopefully, we 

will win all our games 

from now until the 

end of the season and 

then we’ll see where that 

can take us come the end of 

the season.
