How ToFocusOnTheStars Ifyou’veevertriedtophotographtheMilkyWay,nodoubtyou’venoticedhowharditisto focusatnight.Youmayhavealsohadotherphotographerstelyouto‘focustoinfinity’ andwonderedhowtodothat. Ifit'sdaytime,it’seasytopointyourcameraatadistantsubjectandletthecamera autofocus,lockingontoinfinity.Nighttimeisanothermater.Ifyouareluckyyourlens wilhaveaninfinitysymbol(lookslikeafigure8layingonit’sside).Toensuresharpfocus atnight,putyourlensonMF/M (manualfocus),thenmovethefocalringtothelinejust beforetheinfinitysymbol.NoteIsaidjustbeforetheinfinitysymbol.Ifyou’vegoneasfar asyourlenswilalow,thenyou’vegonetoofar.Nowyourreadytophotographstars.
Withimprovementstoautofocusovertheyears,manycameracompaniesarestartingto takeawaytheinfinitystops.Ifyoudon’tseeaninfinitysymbolwhenyouturnthefocus ringonyourlens,chancesareitmaynothaveone.Inthiscaseyou’lneedtokeepyour cameraonAutofocusandtryfocusingonalightinthedistance.Forexample,adistant buildingthathasit’slighton. Ifyoucanseethemoon,tryfocusingontheveryedgeofit.Onceyourcameralocks focus,turnthelenstoMF/M (manualfocus)makingsureyoudon’ttouchormovethe focusringthereafter.Thiswaythefocuswilbesettoinfinity,readyforsharpshotsof thestarsabove.
