Steering

On most motor boats steering is controlled by a steering wheel or tiller arm.

Types of Fuels

Gasoline

o

o

4 Cycle- Straight gasoline has separate oil system for lubrication (usually inboard

or I/O engines). These engines are generally heavier than 2-cycle engines but

are usually quieter and less polluting. Use regular, automotive oil as required by

engine manufacturer.

2 Cycle- Oil mixed with gas (most outboard engines), must be in proper

proportions IE.50: 1 (50 parts gas to 1 part oil). Must use 2 Cycle Engine Oil.

Some systems come with automatic oiler systems, such that oil is stored in

separate tank and automatically injected into fuel mix as needed.

Fueling Considerations

You boat can be fueled at the gas pump while trailered or at a dockside fueling station.

Always keep a close check on your fuel level. Rule of thumb – One-Third Rule, Plan for

using a third of your fuel getting out, a third getting back, and having a third left over.

Know, and consider custom marking, your fuel gauge.

Electrical – Boats often have two batteries, so that there is always a backup battery

available. Use of individual batteries is adjusted using a master switch. Consider an

onboard AC battery charger to ensure battery power is maintained when stored. Batteries

should be mounted securely in a protected, dry, area.

Checklists

Checklists should be used to ensure you don’t overlook any of the critical components of a

vessel.
