A special message from AHS President & CEO, Frances Jonon: Happy New Year! At AHS, not only are we welcoming the new year, we’re also launching our 70th Anniversary celebration! The Austin Humane Society was established on November 11, 1952, and it’s incredible to think about how far we’ve come since then. Over the next year, we look forward to reflecting on our past and sharing more about where we plan to go in the future. We have so much to celebrate and even more to be grateful for – and that includes you! Stay tuned for more throughout the year, and let’s celebrate 70 years of saving lives together! 2021 Year in Review Before we start the 70th Anniversary celebration, let’s take one last look back at all we were able to accomplish in 2021, thanks to your support! Frances Jonon, CAWA President & CEO 12,257 ANIMALS SERVED 2021 was another unprecedented year. Due to the ongoing pandemic, our shelter remained closed to the public for the first half of the year, but we continued our virtual adoptions and helped so many animals find their forever homes! We were so happy to reopen our shelter on July 12th, 2021. Despite so much uncertainty, our supporters helped AHS serve thousands of animals over the past 12 months.
77,427 POUNDS OF FOOD DISTRIBUTED THROUGH OUR PET FOOD PANTRY SERIES In 2021, we continued our Pet Food Pantry series, which was initially started in 2020 in response to the ongoing pandemic. In all, we distributed 77,427 pounds of food into the community – that’s a lot of full tummies! Thanks to our sponsors and volunteers who help make these events possible. 1,000+ ONLINE VIEWERS JOINED US FOR OUR FIRST VIRTUAL PUPPY BOWL On February 6, 2021, we held our 14th Annual Puppy Bowl in the AHS auditorium. This virtual event was hosted by our CBS Austin’s Trevor Scott, and featured adoptable puppies battling it out on the gridiron. We are so excited for our 15th Annual Puppy Bowl, which will be held in-person on February 12th. See the back page for more information on this outdoor event! 1 MASSIVE SNOWSTORM! 117 HURRICANE IDA EVACUEES The winter storm that hit Austin in February of 2021 caught the entire city off guard – but at AHS, our staff members were ready to respond! They braved icy roads to get to the shelter to ensure each animal had enough food, water and warm bedding. They even brought in air mattresses and pillows and spent the night at the shelter to keep that care going around the clock. 1 X-RAY MACHINE It was a very X-citing day at AHS when we unveiled our brand-new X-ray machine! Thank to this new addition, our animals will only have to travel a few steps to get the medical care they need. Here’s Sir Reginald the kitty getting the inaugural X-ray! In August, with Hurricane Ida bearing down on Louisiana, we opened our doors to dozens of animals evacuating from the path of the storm. Over the next few weeks, we continued to welcome in additional animals, taking in a total of 117 animal evacuees. $720,000 RAISED AT OUR RECORD-BREAKING RAGS TO WAGS GALA Oh, what a night! On November 13, 2021, we hosted our 16th Annual Rags to Wags Gala, and it was certainly an event to remember. In total, we raised a desperately-needed $720,000 to serve the animals of AHS in the coming year. We can’t wait to do it again this November!
