On 27 January 1851, the first draft <strong>of</strong> a text, relative to the announcement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fiftieth jubilee <strong>of</strong> <strong>Reinwardt</strong>’s pr<strong>of</strong>essorate, was made public. N.C. Kist (rector <strong>of</strong><br />

Leyden University), Jacobus Geel (pr<strong>of</strong>essor and librarian <strong>of</strong> Leyden University),<br />

J.H. Molkenboer (botanist, Leyden),Willem Hendrik deVriese (zoologist, Leiden)<br />

and Jeronimo de Vries (Amsterdam) decided together about the final text <strong>of</strong> this<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficial document.<strong>The</strong>y also had to propose the text to be engraved on the gold<br />

medal to be minted in honour <strong>of</strong> their friend and colleague. <strong>The</strong> anniversary was<br />

celebrated on 10 June 1851, exactly 50 years after <strong>Reinwardt</strong> had delivered his<br />

inaugural address at the university <strong>of</strong> Harderwijk. [See: KB 121 B 8/28: 27 January<br />

<strong>Caspar</strong> <strong>Georg</strong> <strong>Carl</strong> <strong>Reinwardt</strong> died on 6 March 1854, at the age <strong>of</strong> almost 81<br />

years. His death was considered a great loss to the fatherland. He was one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

founders <strong>of</strong> the ‘modern’ natural sciences, which developed and diversified in the
