EDITOR'S NOTE

BOOSTING MANUFACTURING

The economic activities largely depend on the availability of electricity. The

electricity generation based on fossil fuels is not desirable, as it pollutes the

environment and due to this the growth is not sustainable. Many countries

including India are on the lookout for clean energy sources which safeguards the

environment as well as contribute to the economic growth. India has committed

to meeting its 40% of electricity requirement from non-fossil energy sources by

2030 as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions at COP 21. India has

made rapid strides in generating solar power and is about to become a leader

in this space. India solar energy generation is mainly based on imported solar

modules. The local solar manufacturing is yet to take off in a grand way, the

current subsidy offered for the imported modules is likely to be stopped from

April 1 and Custom duty will be levied. To boost domestic solar manufacturing,

the Government has announced number of scheme such as Production linked

incentive scheme, CPSU scheme, and others. In the next 2-3 years, the country

hopes to setup complete ecosystem for Solar manufacturing. In this issue, we

have focussed on solar manufacturing sector and presented our analysis and

opportunities about the same.
