ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TEXTILE PRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
3000 liters of water
are needed to produce
one cotton t-shirt
The fashion industry uses
enough water to quench
the thirst of
110 million people for
an entire year*
Utilizing India’s textile ‘waste’ as a valuable resource, a
wide variety of jobs & skills are created in the areas
of Collection, Sorting, Logistics, Clean, Repair,
Remanufacture, Remerchandise.
20 jobs are created for every 1,000 metric tons of
used textiles collected and sorted for reuse / recycling.
The textile industry
produces 10% of
global CO2
emissions
Imagine that all the textile waste is
utilized as a valuable resource,
reducing the need for virgin materials.
We can generate an entire new
circular employment sector with
fairness and inclusivity wired
in its DNA.
It estimates that every additional kilo tons of recycled
textiles could create an additional 6-7 jobs.

Khaloom
Khaloom is an India based textile design and production house that offers
handwoven fabrics made from recycled textile waste.
ISSUE TACKLED
Textile waste is the 3 rd largest source of
municipal waste in India and production of
raw materials (e.g. cotton) have an enormous
footprint. The handloom sector employs 3.5
million people, but handloom workers are often
grossly underpaid, with 67% earning less than
€60/month.

STATUS
Scaling
Khaloom masters the technology and processes
required to transform recycled textile to high-end
fabrics. It achieves this by upskilling local women
who can manufacture fabrics of internationally
appreciated quality. It offers handwoven fabrics
made from recycled & organic yarns. Fabrics
contain 100% cotton yarns or a mix of cotton
with linen, silk and por. Recycled content varies
between 30-100% depending on the fabric.
By 2025, we aim to globally provide brands
with the opportunity to transform 35.000 kg
of waste per year into ethically manufactured
textile products and facilitate a hopeful
future for 400+ workers in their value chain.
We’re investigating the scale up of via an

VENTURE UPDATES
VENTURE UPDATES
Khaloom
COVID19 has had an enormous impact on
the fashion sector. With brands cancelling
orders and payments being suspended,
combined with stringent lockdowns, the
production sector in India has been hit hard.
This perhaps more than ever distilled the
profound inequalities that are woven into our
global fashion supply chains. As a fabric
production house, Khaloom was no
exception to hardships and setbacks. Sales
requests slowed down and production took
off later in time than planned for. Despite
these challenges, we’re still on the path to
scale, and love to share the inspiring stories
of what Khaloom means to our current
weavers in the midst of the pandemic. We
could not have come this far without the
invaluable support of our partners!
13
VENTURE UPDATES
WEAVER STORY
Khaloom
The pandemic was a huge blow to the fashion sector, with
brands cancelling orders. Khaloom was also severely affected.
The factory had to be closed and weaving operations
suspended as India entered a full and strict lockdown last year.
Thanks to the invaluable support of the Ikea Foundation,
Khaloom could continue paying the salaries of its weavers and
not leave them without dire needed income.
Divya and Chandrakala are
weavers at Khaloom and
absolutely love their jobs.
Weaving is ingrained in their
families, a skill passed down
from generation to generation.
“I like the meditativeness of
weaving. It comes naturally,”
Divya explains. “My father
taught me and I started when I
was 12. Weaving is in my genes.”
“I was relieved after Khaloom’s
call of continuing to pay us,”
Chandrakala says. “I was worried
where we would get money for
essentials like meals from. My
husband’s shop was closed.
There would have been no
income.”
“I had heard of people who
weren’t paid anything. The
companies which laid off people
have existing employees who
are overworked. I have a
neighbour who is overworked.
The work times have only
become longer.”
“I was overjoyed when Khaloom
opened again,” Divya says. “I felt
like I was lost in a jungle and
came back! I was so happy to be
reunited with my colleague
weavers, my friends. I have
worked in other companies, but
at Khaloom I can be myself
without fear. I can ask and be
open with Khaloom.”
When the factory was slowly
able to open again Khaloom
turned its attention towards
meeting the rising need for
masks across India. The
company is using its handwoven
and recycled fabrics to sew
masks for essential workers like
litter pickers, street sweepers
and autorickshaw drivers. This
not only provides these workers
with vital protection, it also
enables trusted - now
unemployed - tailors to work
from home and earn an income.

PurFi
PurFi has a groundbreaking technology to rejuvenate textile (cotton) waste
into virgin quality fibers
ISSUE TACKLED
Only 1% of textile waste is recycled into new
apparel. Key challenges being the immaturity
and scale of recycling technologies and the
lack of technology, skills and infrastructure to
collect, sort and distribute textile waste at
scale. Especially for cotton there’s no solution
that can rejuvenate cotton with high quality
at scale.
IMPACT AMBITION
HOW IT WORKS
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
STATUS
Piloting
We’re supporting the commercializing of the
groundbreaking PurFi technology that can
rejuvenate natural (cotton) fibers at virgin
quality, for the mainstream market. Together
with PurFi, we’re building the supply chain to
collect & sort textile waste, cotton waste, as
feedstock to produce 100% rejuvenated fibers.
By 2025, 48 million kg post-production fabric
waste collected, sorted and rejuvenated per
year.
By doing so 220 billion liters water and 50
million kg CO2 can be saved.
Scaling recycling doesn’t only require new
technology. The value of waste increases
tremendously once cleaned, sorted,
cut and packed. The industry needs new
networks and processes to professionalize
waste collection.

VENTURE UPDATES
In the harvest season of 2020, we ran an
initial small-scale trial pilot in rural China to
harvest sea buckthorn leaves and capture
learnings of setting up this new agricultural
supply chain.
The first 500kg sea buckthorn leaves are
turned into our DesertSpring tanning agent
to perform lab tests with our project partner
Bhartiya, followed by other leather brands
as potential clients.
The first lab tests of our tanning agent
at Bhartiya in India showed results beyond
positive: Not only is the quality great, but
the tanning process might be more
efficient than regular industrial agents!
We launched the first large scale pilot for
the harvesting season of 2021. For the first
time 20,000 kilograms of sea buckthorn
leaves were harvested in China - Gansu
province mid July. Together with 70-100
pickers we facilitated a fair and sustainable
process.
Simultaneously we’re in conversation with
multiple fashion brands to introduce
DesertSpring tanned leather in the market.

Puraloop - on hold
Puraloop offers a decentralized zero-waste system for industrial sludge,
based on microwave pyrolysis technology.
ISSUE TACKLED & IMPACT POTENTIAL
Currently industrial sludge, like hazardous
solid wastes from textile dyeing units and
leather tanning industries, is being landfilled or
illegally dumped. The waste creates air, soil
and water pollution and causes health
problems.
Impact potential was to by 2025 prevent 13
million kg of waste ending in landfills.
.
LEARNINGS
HOW IT WORKS
STATUS
ON HOLD
Puraloop has the ambition to 100% replace the
landfilling of hazardous and hard to treat dyeing
& leather sludge, by offering industries attractive
alternatives. That’s why Enviu aims to partner
with Puraloop to launch their technology in India.
Puraloop offers decentralized zero-waste
systems for industrial sludge. The microwave
pyrolysis technology effectively transforms
sludge to electricity and high value chemicals.
We underestimated the technical validation. We did in-depth market research and found the market
was ready. We even had customers lined up. However, the technical validation was not as far as we
thought it was when we started the market validation. The technology is made to filter chemicals from
waste water, but it isn’t ready to do this with sludge produced during tanning and dyeing processes.
There were technical set backs and we stopped at the right time. When the technical validation is
done by our partner, we will reignite the conversation to continue.

Always start from the issue. In hindsight we started from an opportunity with SUSCLO. SUSCLO
originated from a market demand we found with Khaloom’s customers. While working on SUSCLO we
came to the conclusion that SUSCLO will solve a market problem, but not the systemic problem. The
venture-to-be would not create impact at scale, and would not solve the systemic problem. For this
we need to take a step back in the value chain, we need to provide the technology and solutions to
garment manufacturers. Stopping is not failing!

IN 2022, WE’RE GOING TO…
LOOKING FORWARD
…BRING OUR
EXISTING VENTURES
A LEVEL HIGHER
Khaloom is currently pivoting the
strategy and will be investment
ready by Q3 2022. Before that we
need to prove financial robustness,
scalability, and market demand
DesertSpring should be investment
ready by Q1 2022. To make this
happen we need to have transitioned
from a project organization into a
venture with a lead Entrepreneur on
board.
We will be preparing Discovered to
scale-up, fund raise, and potential
exit for Enviu in 2022. We should
have proven the business model,
traction and operation in US, and the
team functioning independently.
…BUILD AND GROW
OUR FIRST
MULTINATIONAL
With PurFi’s technology and business
model validated, we’re set to scale.
In 2022 we’re planning on:
• Expanding sourcing operations in
India and East Africa to 300,000
kg per month
• Opening a small pilot facility in
Vietnam
• Need to close investments for a
rejuvenation facility in India.
Setting up rejuvenation in India,
• By the end of the year expand
sourcing facilities to 40 million
kgs per year
After winning the State of the Art
Partnership Award 2021, presented
at the COP26, we will further build on
our strong partnership with P4G to
grow the investor and customer
base.
…START BUILDING A
NEW BATCH OF
VENTURES
We joined forces with Ikea
Foundation and Circular Apparel
Innovation Factory (CAIF) to build a
new circular textile waste model in
India that will help recover and
reclaim value from textiles waste
while unlocking green jobs for waste
workers, one of the most vulnerable
and underserved communities.
We’re combining our strengths: We
will focus on piloting, building and
scaling 3-5 green businesses that
prevent or valorize textile waste and
generate green jobs. CAIF will build
the capacities of waste workers into
micro-entrepreneurs.
The IKEA Foundation is funding the
initial and seeding phase of the fiveyear
project. We have taken on the
ambitious mission of creating more
than 5000 green jobs while saving at
least 20 million kgs of textiles waste
from ending up in landfills by 2026.
…FURTHER
STRENGTHEN THE
ECO-SYSTEM
It is time to work with the big brands
in the industry: We need to close
contracts with at least 15 large players
We need to activate serious amounts
of investment capital into the market:
For Khaloom, Discovered, DesertSpring
and PurFi
We will stimulate other sustainable
entrants in the market: Together with
partner GIZ we want to find 25
additional sustainable reuse solutions
for textile waste and stimulate growth
for them
We will actively share our lessons
learned: Together with partners like
GIZ and CAIF we will create a reuse
guide that stimulates the use of textile
waste, share our textile waste
management methodology to a bigger
crowd, and organize industry
convenings on the topics above
