Haddonfield Little League

will begin its 2022 season with

“Baseball Night in Haddonfield”

on Friday, April 1.

What sports did you

play as a child?

“My sport was

softball,” says MARY

BLACKMAN

of Collingswood.

“I was in the town

league from fourth

grade through

eighth. I played

second base, and

loved it.”

“My older brothers

played baseball,”

says CONNOR

BULICKI of

Pennsauken, “so it

was only natural

that I would also. I

played for the Happy

Hippo Little League

team. Outfield.”

TERRY MONTANA

of Cherry Hill grew

up in Camden and

played baseball

“because there was

not much else to do.”

Terry played outfield,

and was “a pretty

good pitcher too.”

AMY CRUTCHFIELD

of Haddonfield

swam ... a lot. “I loved

swimming but I also

loved competing,”

she says. “I got a high

from the feeling of

accomplishment,

after spending so

much time training.”

As a youngster,

ANTONNE JONES

of Mt Laurel played

baseball, football,

and basketball.

“I played in the EOM

(Edward O’Malley)

League in South

Philly. First and

third base mostly.

Good times. Good

memories.”

Haddonfield’s

CHARLIE

PRESENZA

participates in

soccer, lacrosse,

cross-country, and

track. His favorite?

Lacrosse, “because

the uniforms and

equipment are really

cool. I think we have

our first game this

week.”

SYMPHONY

IN C

.

Celebrate with the Symphony: 70!

Symphony in C will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Sun Apr 24 from 5 to

9pm at Tavistock Country Club.

The Symphony was founded as a community orchestra – the Haddonfield

Symphony – in 1952. Over time, its mission evolved into that of a training

orchestra for young professionals and a comprehensive music education

organization serving people of all ages throughout the region.

Symphony in C performs at Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts and other

venues, and contributes to the quality of life we enjoy in Greater South Jersey.

The 70th Anniversary Gala will be chaired by Penny and Stephen E. Ryan of

Marlton and Rosie Hymerling of Haddonfield. Emcee will be former Haddonfield

mayor and Symphony in C board chair, Jack Tarditi.

Guests will enjoy cocktails, gourmet dinner with wine, and entertainment by

pianist David Zipse and the Elegance Electric String Quartet. Tavistock Country

Club’s Covid protocols in effect at the time of the event will be observed.

The gala will honor Charles (Chuck) Heuisler and C. Carney (Chick) Savery,

both of whom were instrumental in guiding the former Haddonfield Symphony

from community orchestra to the music education powerhouse it is today.

The event will also remember former board chairs and Archer Law attorneys

Robert R. Kugler and Lee Hymerling, who passed away in 2021.

Proceeds from the gala will support the Symphony’s Summer Camp, Youth

Orchestra, concerts for young people, and after-school instrumental music

programs in Camden and the region.

For Gala reservations and information, including details of sponsorship

opportunities, call Denise Stuart, vice president of development, at

856-240-1503 or email her at dstuart@symphonyinc.org.

Symphony in C is a New Jersey 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so direct

donations are tax-deductible, as are substantial portions of ticket costs and

sponsorships for the gala.

3/19: Mayor’s

Breakfast

The Lions Club,

sponsors of the annual

Mayor’s Breakfast for

the past 30 years, has

rescheduled this year’s

event to Sat Mar 19.

The location is the

Presbyterian Church’s

Fellowship Hall. Start

time: 9am.

The reason for the

postponement (from Sat

Jan 22) was the Club’s

concern for the health

of those attending, given

the recent dramatic

increase in cases of

Covid-related illness and

hospitalization.

The Lions Club is

putting plans in place to

ensure that appropriate

social distancing will

be possible. Masks and

proof of vaccination will

be required.

Those who attend

the Breakfast can

look forward to some

enhanced features

related to the Citizen of

the Year award.

The first award was

presented in 1973 and

2022 marks the 50th

anniversary, so the Lions

want to honor not only

this year’s recipient,

but also give special

recognition to past

recipients who are able

to attend.

In addition to the

Citizen of the Year

award, the Lions will

present the William

Hansen Youth of the Year

award to Maddie Cush,

president of the Leo Club

at the High School.

Tickets for the

Breakfast are $15 ($10

for those age 12 and

under). Exception: There

may be no such thing

as a free lunch, but

former Citizens get to eat

breakfast for free.

Lectures about the Revolution

Camden County College and the Skirmish

Committee are preparing to present a series of

lectures about the American Revolution, from the

perspective of our communities.

The series is part of the build-up for the Sat Jun 4

Skirmish on Kings Highway.

The series begins with a lecture on Wed Mar 30

at 7pm at the Masonic Temple (16 Kings Hwy E).

Garry Stone will describe the life of John Inskeep

(born near Haddonfield in 1757).

Inskeep volunteered in June 1776 to serve five

months in a temporary regiment sent to help

defend New York City. In fact, he served for the

next two years – as a militia cavalry man, artillerist,

quartermaster, and commissary.

He was at the battles of Princeton, Billingsport,

and Fort Mercer. Later he served as a quartermaster

for Continental Army.

His story is a vivid illustration of the ways the

American Revolution affected South Jersey.

Lecturer Garry Stone has a PhD in American

Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

His entire career focuses on researching,

restoring, and interpreting historic sites and

landscapes.

He has served as chief archaeologist and then

director of research at Historic St. Mary’s City,

Maryland, historian at Monmouth Battlefield

State Park and historian at the Indian King Tavern

Museum in Haddonfield.

He is the author of numerous articles on

archaeology and history and a contributing author

of Fatal Sunday: George Washington, the Monmouth

Campaign, and the Politics of Battle.

The second lecture in the series, in the Borough

Hall at 7pm on Wed Apr 6, will be presented by

Doug Rauschenberger,

He will talk about life in Haddonfield during the

American Revolution.

Details about the Skirmish, and the lecture

series in particular, may be found here n, or on the

website of the Friends of the Indian Kings Tavern

Museum: IndianKingFriends.org.

Citizen of the Year

Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 9a

In January 1973, the Haddonfield Jaycees held a breakfast at the

First Baptist Church in honor of Mayor Eugene V. Hinski.

Also honored with a “special service award” was “an outstanding

citizen” – David J. Finn Sr.

Thus began two traditions that the Jaycees carried on through

1991, and that the Lions Club has continued since 1992.

On Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 9a.m., the 49th * Mayor’s Breakfast

will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, in Fellowship Hall.

During the Breakfast, Mayor Colleen Bianco Bezich will name

the 52nd * Haddonfield Citizen of the Year and join with her fellow

Commissioners to deliver a State of the Borough report. The William

G. Hansen Youth of the Year Award will be presented to Maddie

Cush, president of the Leo Club at Memorial High School.

We invite you to join us for this 50th anniversary celebration.

Admission is $15 at the door. (Age 12 and under $10.)

* Because of Covid-19, a Mayor’s Breakfast was not held in 2021.

** There were two recipients of the award in 1993, and also in 2004.

WHO ARE LIONS?

The International Association

of Lions Clubs was established in

Chicago in 1917 to address social

problems created by World War I and

rapid industrialization. By 1920, there

were clubs in 23 states and Canada

with more than 6,400 members.

During the 1925 Lions International

Convention, Helen Keller challenged

Lions to become “knights of the blind

in the crusade against darkness.”

Thus began a global commitment to

issues related to sight and blindness, a

focus that members of the Haddonfield

Lions Club have embraced since its

founding in 1944.

There are currently 1.4 million Lions

in 48,000 clubs in some 200 countries

– men and women taking action and

making a positive impact in

their own communities

and around the world,

inspired by the motto

“We Serve.”

JOIN US IN SERVICE!

Typically, we meet on the first and

third Thursday of each month, at

6:15p.m., at Tavistock Country Club.

Those interested in learning about

who we are and what we do are

always welcome.

For more information about our

Club and its activities, or to inquire

about membership, send an email to

or visit HaddonfieldAreaLions.org.

A survey for “junior” seniors

The Mabel Kay Senior Center has created a survey geared toward “younger

seniors” – a subjective term, of course – to see what kinds of programming

might incline them to visit a senior center.

Among the questions: What would it take to get you in its doors? Day trips?

Behind-the- scenes tours of local eateries (with samples)? Learning a new skill?

Teaching a new skill? Exercise classes? Volunteer opportunities? Pickleball?

Let Mabel Kay know what would entice you. The more feedback, the better

the Senior Center can be! (No interest whatsoever in attending activities and

events at a senior center? Let them know why ... you won’t hurt their feelings).

Access the survey here: XXX or scan the QR code n with your phone or

tablet. (Open the camera and aim the camera at the QR code. Your phone

should offer you the option to open a link. Tap the link and it will take you

directly to the survey. Need assistance? Call Sheri Siegel at 856-354-8789.

Last Man’s Dinner: April 5

On April 22, 1940, during a gathering to celebrate

the 21st anniversary of the formation of Haddonfield

American Legion Post 38, 108 veterans of the Great

War organized themselves into a Last Man’s Club.

They identified four purposes:

• To preserve our memories of 1917-18

• To pay fitting tribute to our departed comrades

• To foster and perpetuate good comradeship

• To eat drink and be merry.

The charter called for “a bottle of rare brandy ...

to remain unopened until our ranks have thinned to

the last three men,” at which time “the bottle shall

be opened and a toast offered to those comrades

who have gone before.”

The 81st Last Man’s Dinner will be held at the

Tavistock Country Club on Tue Apr 5, at 6pm

(social hour) and 7pm (dinner). All are welcome.

The event honors local veterans of all American

wars, in particular those who are members of the

various “Last Man” clubs established by Post 38 in

the wake of various conflicts.

Three members of the World War II Last Man’s

Club remain: Don Beck, John Brownwell, and Tom

Reilly.

Tickets are $50 and include valet parking. To

purchase, mail a check payable to “Last Man’s Club/

American Legion Post 38” to David Tarditi,

64 Linden Avenue, Haddonfield NJ 08033.
