It was tipped to be the most comprehensive<br />

<strong>Defence</strong> Force Air<br />

Show staged <strong>in</strong> a decade, and<br />

RAAF Base <str<strong>on</strong>g>Amberley</str<strong>on</strong>g> didn’t<br />

disappo<strong>in</strong>t, with more than<br />

90,000 visitors flood<strong>in</strong>g through the<br />

gates <strong>on</strong> October 4-5.<br />

Right from the start the signs were<br />

that it was go<strong>in</strong>g to be big, with a<br />

record number <strong>of</strong> pre-<strong>show</strong> tickets<br />

sold. An hour before the gates opened<br />

<strong>on</strong> day <strong>on</strong>e, hundreds <strong>of</strong> people began<br />

queu<strong>in</strong>g to get <strong>in</strong>to the base, with<br />

thousands more stream<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> from all<br />

directi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

By no<strong>on</strong>, the l<strong>in</strong>e-up at the ticket<br />

booth still stretched for 200m, while<br />

traffic banked all the way back to the<br />

Cunn<strong>in</strong>gham Highway, which had to<br />

be closed <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e directi<strong>on</strong> to facilitate<br />

flow.<br />

CAF AIRMSHL Mark B<strong>in</strong>sk<strong>in</strong><br />

said if those who attended didn’t know<br />

much about the Air Force before they<br />

came, they sure do now.<br />

“We had a great display right<br />

There’s no bus<strong>in</strong>ess like air <strong>show</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess, writes LAC Aar<strong>on</strong> Curran<br />

across the board,” he said. “This came<br />

not <strong>on</strong>ly from the fly<strong>in</strong>g side, but<br />

from the public talk<strong>in</strong>g to so many<br />

<strong>of</strong> our people, from the ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ers<br />

around the aircraft, to operators <strong>of</strong><br />

the Bushmasters and the dog handlers.<br />

They’ve had a chance to look at<br />

the Air Force from the ground up.”<br />

On display was a large selecti<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> assets, from the latest C-17 to the<br />

so<strong>on</strong>-to-be-retired F-111. Other aircraft<br />

and pers<strong>on</strong>nel from around<br />

Australia attended, with Hawks,<br />

Hornets, Ori<strong>on</strong>s and Hercules all hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

static and fly<strong>in</strong>g displays.<br />

Brisbane visitor Adrienne<br />

M<strong>on</strong>tague saw the C-17 for the first<br />

time and waited <strong>in</strong> the 100m-l<strong>on</strong>g<br />

queue to walk through it and see the<br />

“The C-17 was unbelievable,” she<br />

said.<br />

“You can’t comprehend the size<br />

and the capacity and that someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

like that could ever get <strong>in</strong>to the air.<br />

Inside it was so neat and organised. It<br />

is fantastic how they can cope with so<br />

many th<strong>in</strong>gs at <strong>on</strong>ce.”<br />

Other Air Force and ADF units<br />

were represented as well. From the<br />

Army’s ARH Tiger helicopter, Navy’s<br />

air assets, Air Force Cadets, <strong>Defence</strong><br />

associati<strong>on</strong>s and other <strong>Defence</strong>-related<br />

exhibiti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> halls.<br />

<strong>Defence</strong> Force Recruit<strong>in</strong>g was also<br />

prom<strong>in</strong>ent and put <strong>in</strong> a big effort to<br />

<strong>show</strong> the public what the ADF had to<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer.<br />

A display that proved very popular<br />

was <str<strong>on</strong>g>Amberley</str<strong>on</strong>g>-based No. 2<br />

Airfield <strong>Defence</strong> Squadr<strong>on</strong> (2AFDS).<br />

The squadr<strong>on</strong> had <strong>on</strong> <strong>show</strong> snipers,<br />

Bushmasters, weap<strong>on</strong>s, bikes, 4WDs<br />

and equipment.<br />

LAC Cassidy Te Maro, a sniper<br />

from 2AFDS, was busy with people<br />

want<strong>in</strong>g to photograph him <strong>in</strong> his<br />

‘yowie’ suit with his rifle.<br />

“It was my first air <strong>show</strong> and I<br />

really enjoyed it,” LAC Te Maro said.<br />

“It was good fun and good to get<br />

the kids <strong>in</strong>volved. A lot <strong>of</strong> people said<br />

they had never seen anyth<strong>in</strong>g like it.<br />

“I guess they were all around me<br />

because they <strong>on</strong>ly saw the [yowie]<br />

‘get-up’ <strong>in</strong> the movies.”<br />

The US Air Force jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> with<br />

two F-15s and a C-130, and the<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gaporean Air Force also c<strong>on</strong>tributed<br />

an F-16 and Super Puma helicopter<br />

to the l<strong>in</strong>e-up.<br />

USAF Staff Sergeant Ram<strong>on</strong>e<br />

Hayes from 44SQN came al<strong>on</strong>g with<br />

the F-15s and was delighted with the<br />

crowd’s resp<strong>on</strong>se to their attendance.<br />

“It was my first time <strong>in</strong> Australia<br />

and I loved it,” he said. “A great country<br />

and everybody was very friendly<br />

to us. Every<strong>on</strong>e knew that these [aircraft]<br />

were F-15s. I had never seen an<br />

F-111, and the ‘dump and burn’ was<br />

just awesome.”<br />

The air <strong>show</strong> team, led by Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Special Events (HSE) AIRCDRE Phil<br />

Byrne, took <strong>on</strong> the resp<strong>on</strong>sibility <strong>of</strong><br />

putt<strong>in</strong>g it all together.<br />

AIRCDRE Byrne said they run air<br />

<strong>show</strong>s for two reas<strong>on</strong>s: firstly to <strong>show</strong>case<br />

the ADF, and <strong>in</strong> particular the<br />

Air Force, to the community; and sec<strong>on</strong>dly<br />

to highlight the range <strong>of</strong> careers<br />

<strong>in</strong> the ADF.<br />

“On both counts we were very successful,”<br />

AIRCDRE Byrne said.<br />

“We put an enormous amount <strong>of</strong><br />

work <strong>in</strong>to plann<strong>in</strong>g this event over the<br />

past 12 m<strong>on</strong>ths and also c<strong>on</strong>siderably<br />

more effort <strong>in</strong>to public relati<strong>on</strong>s for<br />

the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Amberley</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>show</strong>, and the results<br />

speak for themselves.”<br />

AIRMSHL B<strong>in</strong>sk<strong>in</strong> said he was<br />

“extremely proud” to see the Air<br />

Force team at work dur<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>show</strong>.<br />

“It was a huge team effort and I<br />

want to say a pers<strong>on</strong>al thank you to<br />

every<strong>on</strong>e who was <strong>in</strong>volved,” he said.<br />

“Pull<strong>in</strong>g this <strong>on</strong>e together was a great<br />

success and echoed publicly <strong>in</strong> the<br />

media with very positive report<strong>in</strong>g. I<br />

also received many compliments from<br />

the public and from our own people,<br />

so well d<strong>on</strong>e to all who c<strong>on</strong>tributed to<br />

the effort.”<br />

But it was the sheer volume <strong>of</strong><br />

attendees that proved this was <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />

the best air <strong>show</strong>s yet. In the words <strong>of</strong><br />

visitor Adrienne M<strong>on</strong>tague: “I d<strong>on</strong>’t<br />

know how anyth<strong>in</strong>g can top this <strong>show</strong>;<br />

it was just superb.”<br />
