EXPERT ADVICE &
GREAT TRADE PRICES!
The sector appears to be experiencing a slight slowdown in demand for
home improvement products, as rising inflation and energy prices in
particular place a squeeze on homeowners’ incomes and expenditure.
This trend is reflected in the latest Business Pilot Barometer, where Neil
Cooper-Smith explains on page 12: “With UK inflation rising, for those for
whom new windows and doors were an aspirational or discretionary spend,
the prospect of tying up cash in home improvements may now be less
appealing.” But as Neil points out, there are still opportunities out there for
installers as lead times potentially ease: “Conversely, those with cash who
have perhaps held off on improvements because of long lead times and
inflated prices, may decide that with energy prices rising, now is a good time
to invest.”
On page 22, Martyn Elwell of Central Window Systems also points to
challenges for installers in the coming months, and he too advises looking to
customers at the higher end of the market: “There’s no denying it, things are
tough out there for installers, and it’s only going to become more difficult. My
advice to installers would be to try and focus on serving the higher end of the
market, as this is a sector I see continuing to flourish.”
In this issue we also get a perspective on the market from Liam Hulme,
Director of Global Windows, in our Installer Insights feature on page 46. As
Liam explains, following a busy few years “we expect there will be a drop-off
soon”, but he also says “a small one might be welcome so that we can all
reset and do some catching up!” I’m sure most in all sectors of construction
would agree with Liam on that!
So read on for all this and much more.
News Roundup
SUSTAINABILITY VERSUS
COSTS FOR HOMEOWNERS
Research asking 2,000 UK homeowners
showed that although they care about
sustainable windows and doors, they don’t
care enough to pay more – or even have
the conversation with their installer.
The findings of the 2022 OnePoll survey,
commissioned by VEKA plc, found that when
it comes to home improvements, consumers
feel that sustainability should be a given.
This marks a dramatic shift in attitude when
compared to research carried out by VEKA in
2018.
Just four years ago, homeowners didn’t feel
passionately about the eco-credentials of
their new windows, but VEKA says what
has remained consistent is that 77% of
respondents want to see their old windows
recycled, not end up in landfill.
VEKA carries out regular surveys, 2022
being its 7th consecutive year, on behalf of
customers to capture homeowners’ attitudes
around key areas and identify opportunities.
The results show that while more than three
quarters (77%) of respondents found the
issue of sustainability to be an important
one, only 31% would be willing to pay more
for recycled windows and doors, and the
majority would only pay an extra 10%.
Over half of the people surveyed had had
their windows changed in the past five years.
Interestingly 71% stated that they never even
discussed sustainability with their installer.
This was backed up by the fact that price,
quality and looks were all considered to
be of higher importance than a product’s
environmental credentials.
In fact, 59% of respondents admitted they
wouldn’t be put off carrying out their planned
home improvements through fears of them
not being ‘eco-friendly'.
www.veka.co.uk
CEO HITS OUT AT TRICKLE VENT LEGISLATION
The boss of window and door fabricator
Conservatory Outlet has hit out at new
Government legislation due to come into play
in June that will see trickle vents become
mandatory on all refurbishment/replacement
projects.
CEO Greg Kane believes the ‘ADF1’ regulation
contravenes the demand for houses to be
more energy efficient and could instead lead to
homeowners facing up to a £500 increase in
energy costs.
Greg is now calling for Ministers to rethink and
make the introduction advisory rather than
mandatory.
This proposed solution would mean that a double
glazed, double sealed PVC-U window is replaced
with the same type of window that carries product
test certificates showing that the airtightness has
not been made worse. The decision is then down
to the homeowner if they want to introduce trickle
vents or not.
“ADF1 makes no sense whatsoever, it is just going
to cause more financial pressures for the end
consumer at a time when fuel bills are already set
The Glass and Glazing Federation
(GGF) has expressed its concern
that two government guidance
documents, due to come into
effect in June 2022, contradict
each other and will increase the
cost of heating to homeowners.
The GGF says the changes, which require
the majority of replacement windows and
doors to be fitted with trickle vents, contradict
regulations which will come into force at the
same time that require such products to be
more energy efficient.
Chris Beedel (pictured), Head of Government
Advocacy at the GGF. said: “From the 15th June
2022, Approved Document L requires the majority
of replacement windows and doors to be more
energy efficient, which will help keep people warm
Above: Greg Kane, Conservatory Outlet CEO
to go through the roof,” explained Greg
The ADF1 legislation, which will go live on June
15th, comes at a hugely pressurised time for the
fenestration sector with unprecedented demand
being delivered against the backdrop of supply
chain disruption and rising material prices.
This latest potential change could exacerbate
production difficulties, with new tooling required
for the volume of products that will require trickle
vents as standard.
He concluded: “We’re hoping most of the glazing
industry will put pressure on the Government to
rethink before this comes into play. It’s not a case
of being against trickle vents, it’s just a case
of giving homeowners the choice of doing what
is best for their homes and their own personal
situations.” www.conservatoryoutlet.co.uk
GGF EXPRESSES APPROVED DOC CONCERNS
by ensuring less heat escapes their
home.
“But in a cruel twist, Approved
Document F will require that holes
are punched into the new windows
and doors in order for them to
provide sufficient additional ventilation
to meet the government’s new standards.”
GGF Group Managing Director John Agnew
concluded: “Clearly we would like to see the
introduction of Approved Document F deferred
until such time as these issues have been
properly addressed.
“Once again it will be the average working family
that will be impacted through additional heating
costs, which could cost up to £500 per year.”
INSTALLER COMES TO THE RESCUE
West Midlands-based installer Wolverhampton Glass
came to the rescue for a customer who was made
redundant just a few days before the completion of
his conservatory roof installation, doing the install
for free.
Mr Hunt had contacted Wolverhampton Glass to replace
his old plastic conservatory roof, but disaster struck just
before the installation date as he was made redundant
unexpectedly.
Roland Hunt and the Wolverhampton Glass team
When the 58-year-old looked at his finances he knew he would not be able to afford the final payment which
included having the roof fitted, leaving the project unfinished.
Managing Director Neal Harper explained: “We had the roof in stock and had only taken a deposit, but Mr Hunt
simply couldn’t afford to have it fitted after being made redundant and was understandably devastated when
he told us."
The Wolverhampton Glass installation team all offered to work free of charge, with many even coming in on
their day off, to get the Ultraframe Performance Glass Roof fitted.
Mr Hunt said: “It was totally unexpected, and I was absolutely over the moon; it really did restore my
faith in human kindness. Matt Tingle, who headed up the team, and all the team did a fantastic job –
and I can’t thank or praise Wolverhampton Glass enough.” www.wolverhamptonglass.co.uk/
CHALLENGE FOR INDUSTRY AFTER DECEUNINCK STUDY
A new independent study commissioned by
Deceuninck and conducted by YouGov, has found
that 86% of UK homeowners didn’t know that
PVC-U windows and doors can be – and are being
– recycled.
“It’s a pretty damning indictment”, said Rob
McGlennon, Managing Director, Deceuninck. “In a
commercial environment where product sustainability
is increasingly important, we clearly have work to do.”
When asked which window and door frame material-type they believed was most recyclable, 37% of
homeowners said wood; 32% chose aluminium; and only 10% chose PVC-U; with the remainder not
sure.
This directly impacted how sustainable each material was seen to be. This time window and door
frames manufactured in wood polled 46% of the ‘popular vote’. This was, however, at the expense of
aluminium, which was seen as less energy efficient by respondents, and as most sustainable by only
12% of those polled. PVC-U also cited by 12% of those surveyed.
Rob continued: “There is a challenge here. The message isn’t getting across to the end-user, despite
the efforts we’re making as an industry to recycle more. That’s got to change and for those companies
who drive it, there are going to be some great opportunities ahead. For those who don’t, well I’m afraid
they’re going to miss out.”
FIT GAINS FOR 2022
FIT Show has announced record levels of
industry support for its delayed 2021 event,
which returns to the NEC Birmingham from
10 – 12 May 2022.
When FIT Show returns, the organisers say it
will be the first live European trade show for the
glass, glazing, windows, doors, conservatories,
hardware and components industry in three
years. The organisers also report that visitor
registration was 50% above the same point in
the campaign for FIT Show 2019 show, whilst a
total of thirteen brands signed up to exhibit or
increased their stand size in January alone.
Event Director, Nickie West said: “We really
have hit the ground running this year and I am
delighted to see so many exciting brands, both
new and returning, added in recent weeks.”
MAGIC OF THE CUP
A Worcestershire home improvement
specialist is on course to hit a record year
– buoyed in part by the power of local
sponsorship.
5 Star Windows and Conservatories, which
employs more than 120 people at its two
showrooms in Kidderminster and Worcester,
has seen orders go past £12m for the first
time in its 22-year history.
Driving this growth has been a shift in
consumer spending during lockdown towards
homes and a new commercial deal with
Kidderminster Harriers that has seen it
become a main sponsor and the sole sponsor
of the North Stand at Aggborough Stadium.
In addition, the 5 Star brand has been
displayed on the sleeves of the first team’s
home and away strips during the National
League North Season and during the club’s
historic run in the FA Cup, which saw it come
so close to knocking out Premier League
West Ham United. 5 Star Windows and
Conservatories has capped a strong year with
its recent accreditation to IS014001.
SKILL SHORTAGES
Veka says it’s time to take action to address the skills
shortage.
As Veka points out, the skills shortage in
our industry has long been discussed.
The company says it was a problem before
the perfect storm hit, with historical low
levels of unemployment, combined with the
fall-out from the pandemic, and a lack of
international labour following Brexit.
And all at a time when order books within the
industry have never been fuller.
Veka says our technologically driven industry
has been leading the way in manufacturing
excellence and innovation for decades and
will continue to do so for decades to come,
but points out the skills shortage issue didn’t
appear overnight, and it won’t be solved in
a matter of weeks. But, as the team at Veka
point out, positive steps can be taken now.
“Finding ways to make our industry a more
attractive proposition to work in seems
the logical place to start,” explained Paul
Armstrong, Operations Director at Veka.
“There has to be a ‘desire’ to want to work
within manufacturing, not a downbeat ‘I’ll
have to settle for this’ attitude.
“Developing and nurturing the next generation
is vital if we are to achieve this goal. This
involves finding out what motivates young
people – training, qualifications, incentives,
career fulfilment – and understanding the
best way to communicate this to them.”
BWF LAUNCHES APPRENTICESHIP PUSH
The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) will
be championing the role of apprenticeships in
the woodworking and joinery manufacturing
industry in an upcoming campaign.
Encouraging the next generation into the industry is
a key priority for the BWF, and the new campaign –
which will feature current and former apprentices
– forms part of the organisation’s 2022 plans over
skills, talent recruitment and retention.
Driving awareness of the many career paths in the
woodworking and joinery manufacturing profession,
as well as the positive contribution that apprentices
make to businesses, activity will be focused around
sharing the stories and experiences of apprentices
As part of its commitment
to becoming carbon neutral
by 2030, ERA, one of the
UK’s leading home security
and fenestration component
providers, is currently installing
over 2,600 solar panels at its
UK headquarters in South Staffordshire..
Forecast to achieve an annual energy output of
979,200 kWh, the solar panels are being fitted
across the roof of the 135,000 sq. ft purpose built
facility, which houses ERA’s design, prototyping,
and successful professionals who began their careers
through the achievement of an apprenticeship.
Launching in March, video content will bring to
life the journeys of individuals entering into, and
professionals already working in the woodworking
and joinery manufacturing industry, and also raise
awareness of the broad range of roles within and
supporting the profession.
Helen Hewitt, CEO of the British Woodworking
Federation said: “This campaign will really shine a
light on the essential role that apprenticeships play
within the woodworking and joinery manufacturing
industry in bringing the next generation of talent into
our profession.” www.bwf.org.uk
SUSTAINABLE HQ GOALS FOR ERA
aluplast fully met the profile requirements of
fabricator and installer customer Seal-Lite
after its previous supply “went off a cliff” as
demand rocketed following the first lockdown
in 2020.
Seal-Lite now produces frames in the Ideal 70
system, which can achieve a WER of A+ with
standard components, and has extended its range
with the Flush Casement, and is compatible with
the Ideal 70 and Ideal 4000 systems.
Seal-Lite also has access to aluplast’s range of 40
ALUPLAST TO THE RESCUE OF SEAL-LITE
“Seal-Lite is an old friend of aluplast, and we are
glad to have them back on board,” aluplast’s UK
owner Keith White said.
“While they are a trade fabricator, 25% of their
business comes from their retail operations. This
gives them a real insight into the local economy
and allows them to offer an even better service to
the trade.
“We look forward to working with Jim, Chris and
Sue, and providing them with new products to
make the most of new opportunities.”
The Business Pilot Barometer
THE ECONOMIC SIDE EFFECTS OF WAR
Neil Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst at Business Pilot, discusses what sort of effect the rising
energy prices, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, will have on the supply chain...
Business Pilot Barometer Edition 26: March 2022
It’s too early to say what the impact war
between Russia and Ukraine will have on the
UK economy but it is likely that it will add fuel
to inflationary growth, with prices already rising
at their fastest pace for 30 years.
As one of the world’s largest exporters of oil
and gas, sanctions on Russia are likely to push
wholesale energy prices, already at record highs
still higher.
We have already warned that the raising of the
energy price cap next month will see average
household energy bills top £2,000 a year and
could even hit highs of £2,350 by this time next
year.
That may bring their energy consumption into
sharper focus but with so much uncertainty about
the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict,
rising inflation and a squeeze on incomes, the
question is will homeowners be prepared to
spend?
What we’re seeing on the ground is a definitive
slowdown, less so in month-on-month change
but on previous years.
Sales were down 1% February on January this
year, leads dropped by 10%, while conversions
also fell by 3%.
Although relatively small changes, there is clear
evidence that with Furlough and Stamp Duty
breaks behind them, plus the opening-up of the
economy, some of the heat has gone out of the
market.
Year-on-year sales in February 2022 compared to
2021 fell by 8%. Compared to 2020 – still prelockdown
– sales are down 36%.
This is in line with a general fall in consumer
confidence recorded by GfK consumer confidence
index falling seven points in February to 26 – the
lowest reading since January 2021, which was
one of the worst points of the Covid-19 crisis.
With UK inflation rising, for those for whom
new windows and doors were an aspirational
or discretionary spend, the prospect of tying up
cash in home improvements may now be less
appealing.
Conversely, those with cash, who have perhaps
held off improvements because of long lead times
and inflated prices, may decide that with energy
prices rising, now is a good time to invest.
The point is we don’t know, which is why
good business discipline and effective lead
management is going to be even more important.
The Business Pilot Sales Dashboard is part of our
comprehensive business management platform.
It tracks leads, demos, daily, weekly and monthly
sales, plus closing ratios.
You can literally review where you are against
KPIs, and the status of leads.
It’s there at your fingertips as a day-to-day
management tool.
Having that visibility means you can maximise
conversions which, when the market is tougher
– which we believe it will be – delivers an even
greater return.
The Business Pilot Barometer offers a monthly analysis of the key trends defining window and door
retail, drawing on real industry data collated by the Business Pilot customer relationship management
system (CRM). Business Pilot uses cloud-based technologies to give installers complete visibility of every
element of their operation from leads and conversions to job scheduling, cost of installation, service
calls, and financial reporting.
Contract The View Talk from Certass TA
VENTILATION: KEY Q'S ANSWERED
With new Building Regulations coming into play on 15th June 2022, Certass Trade
Association hosted a special Facebook live event in their award-winning forum to answer
member queries about Approved Document F. Below, we take a look at some of the most
common questions, answered by Certass TA Chair Jon Vanstone (pictured).
What’s happening in ventilation?
Ventilation has been at the forefront of
discussions around improving the health of
homes for a while now and the guidance in
Approved Document F has certainly caused some
upset within our industry.
As a sector, we have spent many years telling
homeowners how important it is to improve
the energy efficiency of our homes, making
them airtight, adding extra insulation, removing
draughts and helping to keep heat inside.
With climate change and going green high on
everyone’s agenda, this messaging has worked in
our favour.
Unfortunately, this has now caused an opposite
problem – unhealthy homes caused by a lack of
ventilation. Bad ventilation in a building doesn’t
just mean that we may have excess condensation
and mould on our window sills – a recent study
found that poor housing conditions costs the
NHS more than £600m a year, with damp and
poor ventilation being one of the top three biggest
issues.
Many of those glazing parties who took time to
respond to the consultation on ventilation back in
Summer 2020 pushed trickle vents as a solution
for improving ventilation within homes, saying it’s
one that was within easy reach of our sector.
Unfortunately, there was little consideration given
to homeowners’ aversion to trickle vents and
the fact that fitting trickle vents into windows
generally involves punching holes in good, highperformance
products and ruining their thermal
and acoustic performance – often the reasons
why they are investing in new windows in the first
place.
There are other methods of ventilation
that can be fitted in homes instead
of trickle vents in windows, and
we are advising members that
like-for-like replacements are
ok under the rules, as long as the
property is suffering no ill-effects
from poor ventilation and homeowners are
made aware that alternative means of ventilation
should be installed in the home.
But we do need to remember that as part of the
home improvement sector, we should be striving
to help improve the quality and health of the
homes we work in.
Certass TA has released a thorough guidance
document which is available for all members
to download in the Members’ Area, as well
as guidance for homeowners and additional
document templates.
The guidance features simple flowcharts and
document templates to help installers and
surveyors decide whether trickle vents can
be omitted from the installation as well as
alternative ventilation strategies.
What are the alternative ventilation
methods?
Where window replacement is taking place as
part of a wider whole house renovation, it may
be possible that background ventilation is to
be provided by air bricks or even whole house
mechanical ventilation. This work may be carried
out at a later stage than the window replacement.
Where this is the case, evidence will be required
by work registration schemes, such as Certass,
that the consumer intends to carry out this
additional work.
What if the windows have night
vents?
Approved Document F does
not consider a window with a
night latch position adequate for
background ventilation based on
security issues.
How do we educate homeowners?
There is work to be done to educate homeowners
and consumers on why these regulations have
been put in place and promote a unified message
alongside the likes of TrustMark, Which?, the
National Home Improvement Council and Local
Authority Building Control.
What if homeowners refuse trickle vents
in their windows?
There are document templates to help installers
prove that they have advised the homeowner
to include trickle vents and agreed that the
homeowner has taken responsibility for installing
additional ventilation instead.
How will the rules be enforced?
I am currently talking to key government figures
to understand how these new regulations
will be enforced. If we do not toughen up on
enforcement, the goal of safer, healthier and
more energy efficient buildings is unlikely to be
achieved, as those who follow the rules cannot
compete with the ‘cowboys’ who will ignore the
regulations and see it as another commercial
advantage that can be played to the homeowner.
Contract Mental health Talk
LET'S TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH
Following a £10,000 donation to the Lighthouse Club by Quality Assured National Warranties
(QANW), Gemma Swankie of QANW discusses the range of free resources the construction
industry charity provides to support installers when they need it most...
There are staggering statistics about the
impact of mental health issues within the
construction sector, which have only been
exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Office of National Statistics
(ONS), more than 20 percent of adults in Great
Britain were experiencing moderate to severe
depressive symptoms between January and
March 2021, compared with 10 percent before
the pandemic began in 2020.
As the construction sector is one of the largest in
the UK economy, we can be sure that these stats
will include installers who, in many cases, will
have had two exceptionally busy years.
The sobering statistics tell us that construction
workers are three times more likely to take their
own lives than people who work in other sectors.
In the UK, two construction workers take their
own lives every working day and stress, anxiety
and depression account for a fifth of all workrelated
illnesses.
Further analysis and research released in
2021, by Glasgow Caledonian University and
commissioned by Lighthouse Construction
Industry Charity, found that suicide continued to
rise in the four years to 2019.
Mental health is high on the construction industry
agenda, and we are seeing much more content
and information at events such as trade shows,
and in the industry press. What we need to focus
on now is letting people know what support is
available to them and how to get it. That’s why
we chose to donate to Lighthouse Club.
Partnering with Lighthouse Club
QANW donated £10,000 to Lighthouse Club,
the construction industry charity that provides
emotional, physical and financial wellbeing
QANW’s Lauren Frew presents the £10,000 donation to
Lighthouse Club
support to construction workers and their families
in times of crisis.
We see this new partnership as a way to support
the important and vital work that Lighthouse
Club does to help construction workers and their
families when they are in need.
Our members are all involved in the construction
and home improvement sectors, and as well as
this donation we will be working with Lighthouse
Club to spread the message about the work they
do, and the resources (highlighted below) and
help they offer to anyone who is struggling:
donation: “We would like to say a huge thank
you to QANW for their amazing donation which
means that we can continue to proactively
support our construction colleagues in need.
Contract Glazing Summit Talk 2022
BUILDING UP MOMENTUM
After two years away due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Glazing Summit made a triumphant
return in October last year. Below, we preview the 2022 event which is already taking shape...
One of the most important dates in the
fenestration industry calendar is all set
for this year with the return of the Glazing
Summit – after its hugely successful third outing
last year.
Founded in 2018, its mix of on-point discussions
and debates, networking, and the Glazing Summit
Dinner in the evening has been a big hit with
fabricators, installers, glass companies and
component suppliers.
The fourth Glazing Summit will take place on
Tuesday, October 18 at Edgbaston Stadium and
Conference Centre.
Glazing Summit Founder, and CEO of Purplex
Marketing and Insight Data, Andrew Scott
reflected on the event: “The idea was simple –
fenestration faced big challenges and even bigger
opportunities.
“By gathering the sector’s key decision makers in
one place once a year, we could pool our talents
and resources, overcome those challenges, and
take full advantage of those opportunities for the
benefit of everyone in our industry.
“Our industry needs a platform for leaders and
CEOs from across the glass and glazing industry
to come together to learn and share ideas,
thoughts and opinions, and every year the Glazing
Summit is growing, getting better, and becoming
more important.”
Indeed, in just four years the Glazing Summit has
quickly established itself as the biggest one-day
conference in the fenestration industry.
Big names and a packed venue
With more than 400 leaders from across the
industry coming together, the Glazing Summit,
which was backed by 25 big-name sponsors, sold
out yet again last year.
Across a day of debates, discussions and
Above: Andrew Scott speaking at the 2021 event
insightful presentations, fenestration’s best and
brightest pondered the huge challenges glass and
glazing currently faces – and how to make the
most of its enormous opportunities.
Keynotes included Andrew Scott on the dramatic
changes the sector has been through over the last
ten years; David Borland, Senior Technical Officer
at the GGF, on the ever-changing regulatory
minefield; Bloomberg correspondent and Chief
Investment Officer Greg Perdon on Britain’s
economic outlook; and international business
consultant Geoff Burch on growth through
leadership.
Panel debates featuring sector VIPs tackled the
industry’s biggest issues, including the soaring
cost of materials, the supply chain crisis, the
growing number of mergers and acquisitions,
and whether the industry’s much talked-about
commitment to sustainability is just a box-ticking
exercise.
Andrew said: “We welcomed over 400 of glass
and glazing’s most influential people for a
phenomenal day of insight, debate and discussion
at Glazing Summit 2021.
“There was an extra buzz at last year’s event too
as it provided the first opportunity to connect in
person for almost two years and it showed the
industry’s appetite for live events.”
“Our industry needs a
platform for leaders
and CEOs from across
the glass and glazing
industry to come
together to learn and
share ideas”
An even better experience
Momentum is already building for Glazing
Summit 2022, with some of the industry’s
biggest names already on board and more
queuing up to get involved.
Lock experts Yale are confirmed as headline
sponsors, while others signed up include
the likes of MACO, Exlabesa, Unique Window
Systems, Glazpart, Carl F Groupco Limited,
Shelforce, Caribbean Blinds, Business Pilot and
Chase Taylor Recruitment.
For Andrew and his team, it’s all about building
on last year’s success.
“The support we have had since we launched
the Glazing Summit has been incredible and the
challenge now is to raise the bar again,” said
Andrew.
“We are planning to make this year’s Glazing
Summit bigger and better than last year, with an
even better line-up of speakers and an agenda
which will tackle all of the big topics head-on
“We’re really excited about continuing to
shape the event and helping to drive the sector
forward – and if last year was anything to go by,
2022 will sell out fast.”
Market turbulence
'FOCUS ON THE HIGH END'
In a rapidly changing market, it’s going to get tough out there for installers. Martyn Elwell,
Sales and Marketing Director of Central Window Systems, shares his thoughts and advice
on how to stay ahead in 2022…
For the past 24 months, the industry has
enjoyed a welcome post-lockdown boom,
thanks to many homeowners investing
money that would have been spent on holidays
abroad and other luxuries in renovating their
properties instead.
In fact, according to research by Santander, UK
homeowners applied for over 60,000 extensions
and conversions in the 13 weeks of lockdown,
while four in five homeowners renovated their
homes in the following months.
Sales for new windows and doors, conservatories,
extensions and garden rooms soared, and despite
the supply chain issues and price increases that
resulted, for the glazing industry it was a trading
period like no other.
Now, two years since Covid-19 first introduced
itself, that’s all changing.
With most restrictions now a thing of the past and
Central has increased its product range to include
high-end products like the aluminium casement window
Martyn Elwell
travel almost fully reopened, it seems the general
public is making up for lost time.
In the past few weeks alone, hundreds of
thousands of Brits embarked on a half-term
getaway following the government’s scrapping
“There’s no denying
it – things are tough
out there for installers,
and it’s only going to
become more difficult”
of coronavirus testing for fully vaccinated
travellers.
And with the recent news of a record increase
in global gas prices seeing an energy price cap
rise of 54%, home improvements have certainly
dropped down the list of spending priorities.
The market is certainly looking very different to
how it did two years ago, and I do see things
becoming much more difficult for the industry in
2022, especially as the surge in demand calms
down.
The number of domestic installations has
decreased dramatically, something we’ve seen
first-hand at Central Window Systems, with
domestic projects dropping by 30% in the past
few years.
There’s no denying it – things are tough out
there for installers, and it’s only going to
become more difficult.
So what’s the answer?
My advice to installers would be to try to focus
on serving the higher end of the market, as this
is a sector I see continuing to flourish.
In general, homeowners who previously had
more disposable income as a result of the
pandemic no longer have that extra cash
to hand now that life has for the most part
returned to normal and are therefore no longer
spending on improving their properties.
Central’s aluminium Flat Rooflight has been produced to
‘help installers tap into a lucrative and growing market’
At the same time, however, there will always
be higher earning households who still have the
money to spend, and generally, it’s this group that
would rather invest in premium products.
Being a “single source supplier” of PVCu and
aluminium solutions, we are well positioned to
offer the products to help.
As part of Central’s growth strategy, we’ve spent
the past few months expanding into this highend
domestic market, growing both our product
portfolio and customer base with the aim of better
serving domestic installers.
First in our range is the aluminium casement
window, said to be the ideal window to tap into
increased demand for contemporary new-builds
and refurbishment projects.
As well as being extremely aesthetically
pleasing, it incorporates all the high-quality
functions you’d expect from an aluminium flush
casement window, including weather resistance,
advanced performance, and incredible versatility,
functioning as a durable alternative to timber and
steel window systems.
We also offer our aluminium Flat Rooflight
(above), a contemporary but practical system
designed to meet the needs of the modern
building.
Quick to assemble on site and available in
a wide range of sizes, this made to measure
rooflight comes in three different designs – Fixed,
industry can get
through what’s been
through anything”
Ventilation, and Egress – and certainly meets
the demand for stylish and functional products,
helping installers tap into a lucrative and growing
market.
Also available is our range of highly customisable
aluminium bi-folds and patio doors, which offer
homeowners a way to let in more natural light,
and installers the chance to benefit from this
premium market.
From a PVCu perspective, our mechanically
welded flush casement windows provide our
customers with a heritage look that suits many
applications.
It’s the perfect product that can differentiate
installers from the competition and help maximise
their margins.
The right marketing
In what’s set to become a difficult and
competitive trading period, as well as investing
in premium products it’s also vital that installers
wrap themselves in a marketing package to
maintain their strong reputation.
Of course it’s very tempting to cut costs, but it’s
more important now than ever for installers.
That’s why in addition to an extensive product
portfolio, we also offer our customers access to
the exclusive Central Hub, an online portal where
both PVCu and aluminium installers can access
showroom materials and marketing support,
brochures, images and downloads, as well as the
latest company news and order notifications.
All the features of the Central Hub have been
designed to benefit installers, from detailed
product information to dedicated marketing
and showroom support, all of which will help
them provide better service to their customers,
and ultimately win them more sales, improve
conversion rates and increase profit margins.
Promising future
It’s certainly a changing market out there, but I
believe that if the industry can get through what’s
been an unprecedented past two years, we can
get through anything.
With strategic investments in both the right
products and their marketing, domestic installers,
I believe, will flourish, with Central Window
Systems at hand for support all the way.
Advertorial: Guardian Warm Roof
RAISE THE BAR WITH EXCLUSIVE
INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP
There are many benefits to installing the Guardian Warm Roof, and in the face of industry
demands, the system is now even more attractive to homeowners and installers with the
announcement of a new exclusive VELUX® partnership...
Over the last few years the industry
has seen pressure from every angle
imaginable. Among homeowners, things
haven’t exactly stayed quiet either. Since 2020
there’s been substantial growth in homeowners
looking to increase their internal space through
moving to a bigger home. The biggest trend,
however, was with 57% of homeowners deciding
to make energy-efficient improvements on their
home.
While personal needs for more space are growing,
homeowners are facing other industry pressures.
A rising energy price-cap is scheduled from the
1st April this year and there are also
regulations for all residential
dwellings – including
improvements on existing
homes – to be zero carbon
ready by 2025 .
As a result, homeowners
are having to navigate
these changes, and are
even more conscious about
finding long-term energy saving
solutions for their homes.
With growing environmental demands on
residential properties and yearly home energy
increases of up to £708, we are all affected.
As a result of these imminent changes you are
probably wondering ‘how will this affect the
future of my business?’.
Solutions for homeowners
In many homes across the UK the conservatory
that was once thought to be a dream sunroom
has quickly turned into an expensive and
The Guardian Warm Roof is the only conservatory roof replacement system to incorporate VELUX®
neglected extension of its insulation and ventilation technology.
the home. However,
Proven to improve home energy ratings and with
homeowners are
over 100,000 Guardian Warm Roof installations
realising they can
in the UK, it’s no secret why homeowners
reclaim their space back
favour replacing their conservatory roofs with
and remain in line with
this thermally-efficient solid roof. Homeowners
government regulations, with a
choose to keep their internal square footage,
significant improvement on the standard for
maintain property value and reap the benefits of
extensions, making homes warmer and reducing
year-round energy savings and easy temperature
bills, by replacing their conservatory roof.
regulation with the U-value of 0.18 W/m 2 K that
Opting for a replacement roof over demolishing the Guardian Warm Roof replacement brings.
or rebuilding the conservatory is much more cost
Partnerships for the future
effective and environmentally viable. Initially,
a roof replacement is already less wasteful
The Guardian Warm Roof is also fully
as it maintains the original foundations of the
customisable to the needs and style of the
conservatory structure. Secondly, a solid warm roof
homeowner. When replacing the roof, a key
is much more effective in mitigating heat loss and
consideration among homeowners is often
gain than a glass or polycarbonate roof because of
whether they will lose the internal daylight of their
original conservatory. But with a Guardian Warm
Roof, homeowners can maintain light levels with
VELUX ® roof windows: ‘Our exclusive partnership
with Guardian Warm Roof – the first LABC
registered conservatory warm roof system –
means we can help more homeowners transform
their spaces, maintaining a light and airy room
as desired with VELUX ® roof windows’ – Scott
Leader, Market Director VELUX ® .
Subsequently, installers get further access to the
product offering of the renowned industry giant
VELUX ® , a reputable long-term partnership that
boosts saleability among homeowners.
Systems of the future
Instructing long-term home improvements can
often be delayed while awaiting planning approval.
However, with the Guardian Warm Roof, installers
can get pre-approval through the local authority.
Therefore the system can be fabricated and quickly
delivered to site, so installation can start a lot
sooner. Pre-fabrication through Guardian Certified
Fabricators means the build can be completed in
as little as 3 days, allowing installers to easily plan
ahead and move onto the next job.
Prefabricated systems are also known to be a
more sustainable building process including
the potential for less waste and reduced
on-site resources. The Guardian Warm Roof
also incorporates recyclable aluminium in
its prefabricated framework. Demonstrating
multi-level environmental benefits in line
with government and homeowner priorities,
the Guardian Warm roof presents a wealth of
opportunity for home improvement companies.
Guardian Certified Installer
Built on innovative foundations in the home
improvement industry, the Guardian Warm
Roof has a long-standing reputation. This
reputation proceeds with the Guardian Certified
Installer scheme. Intending to set the highest
standard for home improvements across the
United Kingdom, installers are enrolled onto an
extensive training programme to bring them up to
excellent standards. Guardian Certified installers
get first access to new offerings and partner
systems including VELUX ® roof windows. They
also benefit from building control registration,
hands-on business and technical support,
marketing assets and additional leads.
Future-proofing business
Hailed as ‘the perfect future-proofing solution
for homes with conservatories’ – Ross Darcy,
Director at Guardian Building systems,
installing Guardian Warm Roofs is the next
best step for home improvement and new build
companies. By growing system offerings to
homeowners, companies can confidently raise
the bar on industry pressures by delivering
the very solutions the nation needs, providing
for homeowners who want to reclaim their
conservatory back or enjoy an efficient glazed
extension without wasting money and being
hindered by building regulations.
The Guardian Warm Roof is a luxury energyefficient
system that equips homeowners with
peace of mind and full enjoyment of their space
for generations to come. Consequently, it is
also the best future-proofing solution for home
improvement companies as the nation faces
rapidly changing environmental pressures.
Sash windows
When the longstanding timber windows
at a local Gateshead Primary School
began to come to the end of their life, an
effectively planned window replacement project
was required.
Alongside working with REHAU PVC-U frames to
provide fitting aesthetics for the historic building,
the installers and fabricators involved needed to
conduct this work with minimal disruption to the
live school environment.
Located in Low Fell, Gateshead, and built in
1896, Kells Lane is a mixed-sex primary school
with 429 pupils. When the school needed new
windows, Gateshead Council wanted to replicate
the old timber windows with solutions that were
energy-efficient, secure and low maintenance,
while fitting in with the appearance of the
surrounding conservation area.
FRAMES FIT FOR THE FUTURE
When Gateshead Primary School needed its windows replaced, installer Hadrian enlisted
the help of REHAU’s PVC-U profiles to improve the performance without losing the original
timber design.
Following a competitive tender process, Hadrian
Window Systems (Hadrian) were awarded the
contract for the supply and installation of the
replacement vertical sliding sash windows.
Hadrian tasked the fabricator Roseview with
making these windows, which were manufactured
using REHAU PVC-U profile.
Due to the age of the building, the windows
needed to be sympathetic to the original timber
window design while also improving performance.
Specifically, Heritage Rose double-glazed vertical
sliding sash windows were provided to deliver a
highly efficient solution.
As these systems use 28mm glazing, compared
to others which use 24mm, they offer better
energy efficiency and good acoustic performance
ratings compared to other uPVC products.
The project also required additional nonstandard,
vertical sliding sash windows to be
specially manufactured to match the existing
A total of 189 vertical sliding sash windows were installed by Hadrian Window Systems.
“As our close partnership with REHAU spans
decades, we trust in the quality of their profile”
windows that they were set to replace. As some
of the frames specified contained tall window
arches with triple astragal bars that create a
sunburst effect for the building’s occupants, the
fabrication requirements became increasingly
complex.
Mike Bygrave, Sales & Marketing Director at
Roseview, said: “We make recommendations and
produce windows based on the specific project
details, and Kells Lane was no exception.
“In this case, the specification needed to consider
the school’s close proximity to a conservation
area, and the fact large, more intricate window
designs were also included. Consequently,
any solution we provided needed to take
these concerns into account, which is why we
recommended our Heritage Rose model.
“As our close partnership with REHAU spans
decades, we trust in the quality of their profile
so were very confident any frames we provided
would fit this project’s specific requirements.
“We find that PVC-U from REHAU offers a number
of benefits, including that they are easy-tomaintain,
are long-lasting and provide excellent
energy efficiency and acoustic performance,
which is why they remain an attractive solution.
Additionally, because we test all of our fullyfabricated
windows independently, on top of
REHAU’s market-leading profile testing, we can
A solution that delivers
A total of 189 REHAU vertical sliding sash
windows needed to be fitted by Hadrian
throughout the school. In addition to this, 40
replacement casement windows were required
to the toilet blocks and external wellways, which
the installer manufactured inhouse, with REHAU
profiles.
As this project was to be carried out during
term-time, ongoing works needed to cause
minimal disruption for pupils, teachers and other
“Everyone has been
commenting on how
on-site staff. Indeed, due to size of the windows,
measuring 1200 x 3300mm and weighing
in excess of 150kg, they had to be split into
separate frames and coupled together on site.
In order to ensure school activities during the day
remained undisturbed, these product deliveries
and joining activities occurred outside teaching
hours.
David Carr, Quantity Surveyor at Hadrian Window
Systems, commented: “We have worked with
Roseview for many years and, in that time, have
built a good relationship and have confidence in
the quality of their vertical sliding sash windows.
“The size and weight of the windows meant
two installers were required to manoeuvre each
frame into position, so good ease-of-fit was
a must when using an external scaffold and a
telehandler.
Five stars
The whole project was carried out over five
phases, running from July 2020 to January 2021
in order to limit the impact on the school.
Each phase was linked to the building elevations
and was planned so that one classroom was
released at a time, enabling the school to relocate
pupils to different classrooms without impinging
on teaching.
The five-phase approach was praised by
Chris Martindale, Project Development Officer
at Gateshead Council: “We were extremely
impressed with how smoothly this project ran
from the beginning to completion, especially given
the complex circumstances involved.
He concluded: “As a client, I was able to leave
everyone involved in this to carry out the works
required – the fact I could do this, and still have
the project delivered on time, was something I
really appreciated.
“We would happily engage Hadrian again because
their communication was excellent. Since the
project was completed, everyone has been
commenting on how good the windows look
and the quality is top class, so we’re all really
pleased.”
The broad range of materials used in the manufacture of roof windows has been subject to severe supply
disruption over the past 18 months. Despite this, the Keylite team have been working extremely hard to ensure
they remain a solid supply partner for stockists. www.keyliteroofwindows.com
MORLEY INCREASES UNI-BLIND CAPACITY BY 50%
Morley Glass has invested more than £750,000 to increase its capacity for manufacturing its UK Uni-
Blinds range of integrated window and door blinds by a further 50%.
The investment comes in a year when Morley Glass has produced record volumes of Uni-Blinds, up 46% versus
the previous year, reflecting the strong demand that installers are experiencing for the ultra-modern shading and
privacy solutions provided by the range. A new production line for making insulating glass units complete with
ScreenLine Venetian blinds in the cavity has been installed, which means Morley Glass now has three dedicated
production lines in all. Ian Short, MD of Morley Glass said: “It was only four years ago that we made our last
major investment in our manufacturing capacity, but the strength of growth that we have seen for Uni-Blinds,
particularly over the past two years, has exceeded our expectations.” www.morleyglass.co.uk
ENGINEERED FOR GROWTH: THE RISE
AND RISE OF MADE FOR TRADE
Total Installer recently spent time with the Made for Trade team at its new Wynyard HQ in
Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees, to discuss the Korniche brand and hear how bold business
decisions and keeping design and innovation central to the business’s core values has seen
the company go from strength-to-strength.
There’s an awful lot to
like and see on a tour of
Made for Trade’s stunning
210,000ft 2 Wynyard HQ; the
modern showroom showcasing
its Korniche brand products;
break-out areas and café-style
canteens that wouldn’t be out
of place at a tech giant’s HQ;
a fully furnished gym with
changing and shower facilities
to keep staff active and help
attract new workers in the
area; but one thing that really
stands out and sets Made for
Trade apart from most other
‘fenestration’ businesses is the
number of product engineers
and designers within the
offices – there’s a lot more
of them!
It’s a point that was picked
up by Commercial Director
Andy Jones, a recent addition
to the Made for Trade management
team, soon after his arrival. On our tour
Andy explained: “The thing I noticed very
quickly is the number of engineering
staff is different to the sector
– it’s testament to the
importance of engineering
and product development to
the business.”
As with most trends in
companies, this engineering
focus comes from the top at
Images: Made for Trade offers the stunning Korniche Bi-folding door.
Made for Trade. Chairman
Richard Gaunt (left)
explained: “The
heart and soul of the
company is engineering.
Everything we have done
and are going to do in the
future is to be that one step
ahead. We’re not just copying
what someone else has done, we’re
trying to better it.”
And he’s put a management team in place to
ensure this aspiration is realised.
Managing Director Bradley Gaunt
(left), Technical/Engineering
Director Ashley Gaunt and
Operations Director Chris
Wann, all have engineering
backgrounds, bringing
experience from various sectors
into the business.
Doing things differently
It’s a different way of doing
things, but the management
team at Made for Trade
aren’t concerned about doing
things differently or making
bold decisions. It’s quite the
opposite really; the company
has changed and developed its
areas of focus to get to where
it is today, notably taking the
decision to close the
domestic sales and
installations side
of the company
to focus solely on
the trade in 2016.
Richard explained:
“We realised we were
doing too many things.
You can’t really concentrate
and have all these plates spinning
– you need to make sure one doesn’t fall off.”
Accelerated growth
But 2016 was a key year for Made for Trade
and marked the year the business growth really
started to accelerate, prompted in no small part
by the launch of the Korniche Aluminium Roof
Lantern, which really took hold the following year.
The Korniche Roof Lantern embodies everything
that Bradley, Ashley and the team at Made for
Trade want to put out into the market – it’s
engineered and developed specifically with
the trade and installer in mind. It’s quick to
install and arrives as a kit with full, easy to
follow instructions for the installer, reducing the
potential for delays on projects. With no cutting or
silicone required within the roof structure, Made
for Trade says the Korniche is the go-to lantern,
offering plenty of margin for the installer and a
stunning product for the homeowner.
Whilst words are one thing, Made for Trade were
willing to showcase the ease of installation and
put their mantra of ‘Glazed in seconds, fitted
in minutes’ to the test at the FIT Show, inviting
installers to have go and see for themselves
against the clock!
Korniche Bi-folding door
With the Korniche Roof Lantern going down a
storm with installers and homeowners – it’s
believed to account for over 50% of the lantern
market – the team at Made for Trade were in no
mood to stand still, and despite already offering
the Smarts Viso-fold door and introducing the
Visoglide Plus door in 2021, the team launched
the eagerly anticipated Korniche Bifolding
door that year also.
As you’d expect, the Korniche
Bi-folding door boasts a
number of innovations
to make life easier for
the installer, whilst also
ensuring a better product for
the homeowner to live with.
Security is one area
where the Korniche
Bi-fold excels, with
clever details including a
unique new shoot bolt handle with an anti-back
drive element. As a result, even if left unlocked
a forced entry attempt can’t rotate the handle
to open the door – the team say this kind of
reliable, robust touch will sit at the forefront of
fenestration security in 2022.
Effortlessly glide
Other innovative design touches include sealed
bearings in the stainless-steel wheels, and lateral
rollers residing in a unique pivoting axle that allows
the wheels to follow any misalignment in the
stainless-steel tracks underneath. The team say the
doors have been rigorously tested to glide effortlessly
with class-leading smoothness for years to come.
Making life easier for the installer, Korniche
Bi-folds also feature a ‘world first’ – a
unique and patented clip-in internal
glazing bead (left) which the
team say will be the standard
by which all other systems
are judged. As another
industry first for Made
for Trade, the mechanism
uses an outer section of
traditional powder coated aluminium to match
the surrounding sash, yet with the high tolerance
to work as the clip-in bead element. Thanks to
the high precision materials and manufacturing
tolerances with no wedge gasket used, the result
is that beading time for the installer can be
reduced to a matter of seconds per sash.
What’s next?
Furthermore, a unique deglazing tool is supplied
with each kit that engages down the glass line to
remove beads quickly and easily in a couple of
seconds, enabling glass to be removed without
risk of damage to the powder coating finish of the
bead or sash.
With these two fantastic products available
under the Korniche banner, coupled
with the recent official rebrand and
continual focus on product development
and innovation within the company, the
question has to be what’s next?
Whilst letting on the company is looking
into supplying glass and taking control of their
transportation and delivery – two massive
undertakings – the team also announced they
have two new products at “FEED” (Front End
Engineering Design) stage, but they’re keeping
tight-lipped on what they might be! One thing
you can be sure of though is they will be
‘disruptor’ products, offering key benefits for
both the installer and the end user. As Chris
Wann explained: “We intend to develop the best
products, provide the best service at the best
price. The best products don’t necessarily mean
the ‘Rolls Royce’ of everything, it means the best
products for our customers, and I like to think
we’ll continue to do that.”
And that’s the key – offering solutions that
make installers’ lives easier and perform well for
customers. It sounds so simple, but it’s what’s seen
Made for Trade grow from a company with 73 staff
and £8.3m turnover in 2016, to a team of 275+
staff with an expected turnover of between £45-
£50m turnover this year – so watch this space!
Locking systems
UNLOCKING SIMPLICITY
UAP has helped deliver a locking system that needed patented keys that cannot be re-cut
for a project at Manchester College. We hear more about this recent project...
The Manchester College is the largest
further education college in the UK, with 10
locations across central Manchester, South
Manchester and North & East Manchester.
The latest addition to the college is a £25 million
teaching facility at the Openshaw campus
in East Manchester. Constructed by Caddick
Construction, the new facility centralises
healthcare, construction and motor vehicle
teaching in Openshaw.
The new building includes a six court sports hall,
outdoor pitch, gym and sports lab, along with a
health suite with a hospital ward and infectious
disease area. It also includes workshops for
construction, mechanics and engineering
students.
Some of the learning areas are multi-use
classrooms which need to be accessed by
members of staff from different departments,
while other areas will be specific to a particular
department with access restricted to members of
that departmental team only.
All areas of the building needed to be accessible
for maintenance and management teams. To aid
both security and convenience, the college was
keen to implement a locking strategy that is both
secure and simple to operate for all members of
staff.
A critical part of the brief for Sheffield-based
architectural ironmongery specialist, Sapphire
Hardware, was that the chosen locking system
should provide patented keys that cannot be
re-cut on the high street, thereby ensuring any
duplicates are authorised and any lost or stolen
keys are reported.
The goal for the locking strategy was to enable
each key holder to open all doors for which
they have authorised access with a single key.
This created the need for an intricate locking
hierarchy with multiple variations in individual
keys and masterkeys. The college also wanted
A total of 20 keys were
developed for this project
Caddick Construction and Sapphire Hardware to
consider how project delivery at the new building
in Openshaw could be part of a wider roll out of
the locking hierarchy as other buildings in the
campus network are built or refurbished.
Caddick collaboration
Working collaboratively with the college and the
construction contractor, Sapphire developed a
locking hierarchy that enables all locks to be
opened by a grandmaster key, with 12 submaster
keys providing access to specific locations for
teaching, maintenance, admin and cleaning staff.
Once this had been agreed with the college, UAP
Locking Systems custom-manufactured each
cylinder and key, including hand-pinning of all
cylinders for accuracy, and provision of two keys
for each lock.
“As some locations serve multiple departments,”
explained Bill Murray from UAP Locking Systems,
“some locks need to be opened by more than
one submaster key. UAP Locking Systems
manufactured a total of 20 key types, aligned to
the access protocols provided by the college and
the schedule developed by Sapphire Hardware.”
For some doors, there are two locks as an
additional layer of security and all classrooms
have been fitted with a thumbturn to enable fast
and easy locking from inside.
This was part of the client’s brief, in order to
deliver an additional lone working security
measure for any staff staying after normal
teaching hours, and for lockdown procedures
in the event of a terror or knife crime attack. All
external doors have also been manufactured
by UAP Locking Systems to enable doors to be
locked from inside the building as an additional
safeguarding measure.
All the data from the locks and keys produced
by UAP Locking Systems is now securely
stored by the company, to enable duplicate
keys and replacement locks to be cut at any
time. Importantly for this project, the data
will also enable locks and keys for any future
refurbishment or build programmes at other sites
to be designed and manufactured aligned to the
security and access protocols at the Openshaw
building.
“For example,” explained Andrew Canning,
Project Manager at Caddick Construction, “If
additional construction teaching areas are
created at another site, the locking data stored by
UAP will enable a lock to be installed that allows
construction teaching staff based in Openshaw to
access those rooms with their existing key.
“The whole project has been a collaboration
between the delivery partners to enable the client
to maintain security on a one person, one key
basis, and its success has been dependent on the
accuracy of Sapphire Hardware’s schedule and
UAP’s manufacturing.”
Building Regs
ARE YOU FITTING COMPLIANT DOORS?
Do you install doors that meet the upcoming new Building Regulations? Wayne Richards,
Deceuninck Aluminium’s Technical Manager, tells Total Installer why now is the right time
to get to know the upcoming changes.
The popularity of bi-fold doors has been a
modern success story, and has arguably
been the driving force behind the
resurgence of aluminium as a framing material,
as homeowners went on to replace all old timber
or PVC-U windows with new aluminium ones after
installing bi-fold doors.
Systems were designed to balance the thermal
efficiency required by Building Regulations with
the slim sightlines and security levels desired by
homeowners.
Until now, the balance has worked, but with
U-values dropping to 1.2W/m 2 K for windows, and
doors with a glazed area of greater than 60%,
going into newbuild properties from the summer,
and dropping even further by 2025, installers
are turning to their suppliers to find out if their
products can be adjusted to comply.
The obvious first thought is: would using a
triple glazed unit improve the overall thermal
performance enough to comply?
Deceuninck Aluminium’s
Wayne Richards
“Older systems were actually designed for a
double-glazed unit, so there’s a maximum width
of unit you can get into the frames”
“Older systems were actually designed for a
double-glazed unit, so there’s a maximum width
of unit you can get into the frames,” Wayne
Richards, Deceuninck Aluminium’s Technical
An example of Deceuninck’s Bi-Fold door
Manager, explained.
“So, the question is not about the number of
panes of glass, but how deep you can go, and
with older systems you are typically limited to a
28mm-32mm unit.”
This, he argued, limits the design in terms of
thermal performance.
Since the Decalu88 Bi-Folding Door from
Deceuninck Aluminium can incorporate units with
thickness ranging from 12mm to 62mm, you have
greater control over the thermal performance.
“If we went for a standard centre-pane U-value of
1.0W/m 2 K on the bifolding door, we can achieve
an overall U-value of 1.13W/m 2 K,” Wayne said.
“This means our door can comply with the 2022
Part L revisions with a double-glazed unit.
“And if we went for a 0.4W/m 2 K centre-pane
U-value, we can achieve an overall performance
of 0.68W/m 2 K with a triple-glazed unit.
Building Regs
Continued from page 40
Designing a product from scratch
means other features can be added
“That’s based on a 4m x 3m bifolding door, and
able to meet the expected values in 2025.”
If a triple glazed unit was used to improve the
thermal performance, consideration would need
to be made for the extra weight placed on the
hardware.
“Most bifolding doors on the market have a
maximum weight of 100kg-150kg,” Wayne said.
“So, if you are going to put in triple glazing then
you are probably going to go over that maximum
weight, which is going to limit the size of the
door.”
He pointed out that the limiting factor is the
weight that the rollers can carry.
“With the Deceuninck system, the rollers are
designed to take 400kg, which is 200kg a leaf,”
he said.
“When we did the PAS 24 test, we submitted a
door that was 1.2m wide by 3m high – each leaf.
“This was purely to make sure that the doors can
cope with that sort of weight, effectively futureproofing
the door.”
Wayne argued that it was vital that door designers
had one eye on the future, because many limiting
factors could be introduced further down the line.
“We may be looking at acoustic/laminate glass in
the future, especially with security,” Wayne said.
“You are already looking at laminate glass being
“It’s a lot easier to
actually redesign
a new product,
especially since
people are looking for
slimmer sightlines and
better security”
installed in all doors.
“So, if you want to keep the size, and incorporate
a 62mm unit, then you need a heavy-duty roller
and hinges to cope with it.”
The unit is only one variable factor. Another is the
thermal break, with some suggesting that this
can easily be swapped out for a better thermally
performing alternative.
“Systems are tested with a particular thermal
break,” Wayne said.
“So, if you introduce a new thermal barrier, then
you have to go through the whole design and
testing procedure again.
“It’s a lot easier to actually redesign a new
product, especially since people are looking for
slimmer sightlines and better security.
“This aside, many older systems use barriers
that you can’t improve the thermal performance
of, whereas the Deceuninck Decalu88 Bi-Folding
Door uses an ABS system which is a lot stronger,
and can go up to 42mm should the need arise.”
Wayne believes thermal efficiency cannot be
retro-designed into existing systems, which is
why the Deceuninck Decalu88 Bi-folding Door
was designed from scratch.
This also allowed the company to design in other
features, such as the speed of installation and
the overall product quality.
“Everything on that door is Qualicoat Seasideguaranteed,
including the stainless-steel
hardware,” Wayne said.
“Another key feature is the pre-installed gasket.
You could probably save yourself 30-40 minutes
per door, simply because you wouldn’t have to
install the gaskets.
time for everyone. Our workshop
machines have never worked
so hard. With all teams flat out, it’s all
While machinery speeds up fabrication
production, introducing Trade Pricing
Software WindowCad during 2019 and
Updates
PVC-U windows and doors manufacturer Excell Trade Frames (Excell) is celebrating its 20th
anniversary with polymer supplier REHAU.
From its factory in Astley, Excell manufactures PVC-U windows and doors, using polymer supplied by REHAU.
According to the company’s Directors John and Jill Oliviero, the company’s dedication to providing premium-grade
products was a key factor behind its partnership with the polymer manufacturer, which began in 2001.
Due to exponential business demand driven by the partnership, the company has moved three times
to larger premises in the Manchester area, and now operates from an 18,000 sq. ft. factory with 38
employees. www.rehau.com/uk-en/pvcu-rehau-windows
REHAU CELEBRATES 20-YEAR EXCELL PARTNERSHIP
Stephen Nadin - Endurance Doors
Endurance Doors are now driving down lead times for their bespoke, solid core composite
doors to five weeks, with plans to take this to a twelve working days standard following
a sustained period where material supply, consumer demand and other social and
economic factors have pushed times out considerably.
New business systems have been implemented including the new Amicus platform, which
greatly improves customer communications through an automated ticketing and tracking
system, something used effectively by trusted businesses in consumer facing sectors in the
UK and beyond.
INNOVATION AT ITS CORE WITH GRIPCORE DOORS
Sternfenster now supplies doors constructed using the latest GRiPCORE technology, which takes
composite doors into a new league: they are stronger, heavier, won’t warp or crack, and are
warmer and more secure.
GRiPCORE doors, developed by DOORCO, are made using a hybrid of cross-laminated engineered hardwood,
laminated veneer lumber (LVL) timber, and hardwood stiles and rails, then pressed with 4mm GRP skins. This
robust design means these doors will not move, bow or twist more than 3mm, require minimal maintenance,
and have security built in thanks to this unique construction. GRiPCORE doors are said to be warmer and
stronger than standard composite doors: they can achieve an ultra-low U-value of 1.0W/m²K or better; and
they feature multi-point locking mechanisms and high-grade security hardware. www.sternfenster.com
RELOCATION PUTS PREMIER ARCHES ON RIGHT PATH
When Premier Arches relocated to a larger unit at the beginning of 2020, the company could not
have predicted the unprecedented market conditions they’d soon find themselves in.
Soon after more than doubling in size and moving from a 4,700 square foot manufacturing facility in Bolton
to a 10,000 square foot premises in St Helens, the company was forced to shut its doors thanks to Covid-19,
and it was very difficult to predict what the market was going to do. Premier Arches Managing Director Sean
Greenall commented: “Thanks to this increased capacity, we were able to successfully deal with the buoyant
market conditions, supply chain woes, price increases and extended lead times, and as a result, we’ve seen
year-on-year growth, including a 94% sales uplift from 2020 to 2021.
“This year, we plan on expanding production and capacity even further by installing a new mezzanine floor
and investing in new machinery.” www.premierarches.co.uk/
Installer Insights
A LIFE IN THE INDUSTRY
Liam Hulme, Director of Yorkshire-based installer Global Windows, talks to Total Installer
about following his father into the industry, sector challenges and opportunities, and why
online reviews – both good and bad – are always greatly received...
Total Installer (TI): What was your path into
the sector?
Liam Hulme (LH): My Dad has been in the
window industry for a very long time, circa 50
years, and set up the Global brand in 1995 after
working with several double-glazing firms. Fresh
out of sixth form and deciding that university
wasn’t the route for me, I started helping out the
Operations Manager at Global on a part-time
basis and later moved into a role on the customer
service and warranty side of the business.
Thinking that golfing was where I wanted to
take my career, I worked as an assistant
professional golfer for a few months,
but it turned out not to be for me and
I came back to the business to do a
processing role and later moved into
operations.
In 2014, I became a Director and from
there I’ve really been focused on continuous
improvement across the business, developing
operations, implementing new systems, working
on sales and marketing, and generally making
sure that we are doing an excellent job for all our
valued customers.
TI: If you had one piece of advice about
starting an installation business, what would
it be?
LH: You need the right people and you need the
right products.
Everything else in your business could be perfect
– sales, customer service, fancy showroom,
lovely brochure – but if you’re doing a bad job of
installing and fitting a poor product, none of that
matters.
It’s all about building good relationships with
your team, with your customers, and with your
suppliers.
Finding people who have the right attitude and
approach to customer service is crucial – if you can
get that right from the start, you’re on to a winner.
TI: Tell us about a recent project you are
proud of. ..
Above: This project by Global Windows won them the Installation of the Year in 2021
Left: Liam Hulme became Director of Global Windows in 2014
“Everything else
in your business
could be perfect – but if
you’re doing a bad job
of installing and fitting
a poor product, none of
that matters”
LH: That would have to be our most recent award
shortlisted project! It’s up for Best Installation -
Residential (up to £20,000) at the GGP Awards
and we’re looking forward to seeing if we can win
the category for the second time! It’s an amazing
installation.
We replaced 23 timber windows, 3 timber French
doors and 2 timber front and back doors with
energy efficient uPVC cream-on-white windows
and doors.
With the old windows being timber you have to
take a lot more care when taking them out to not
cause any damage to the existing plaster reveals.
So extreme care was needed when replacing so
many timber products.
Being nominated as a finalist again for best
installation with this job is a huge testament to
the amount of effort and hard work the team did
for this installation and customer.
TI: What is the most difficult/challenging
project that you’ve worked on?
LH: It would probably be the one we won the Best
Installation award for last time! It was a project
where we replaced a full house of old timber
Contract Talk
never know what’s going on behind closed doors,
so sometimes it’s just about looking at the bigger
picture, being open and honest with them, and
making sure everyone is doing the best job they
can.
TI: What is your opinion of online reviews? Are
they a blessing or a curse for the installer?
LH: As one of the best rated window companies
in Sheffield, we love them! We have had so much
positive feedback from customers, through all of
our review sites – Google, Check-a-Trade, Which?
Trusted Trader and the Certass homeowner review
platform.
Above: The 2022 project that has been shortlisted for Installation of the Year in an industry awards
sash windows with uPVC flush sash alternatives,
upgraded the large timber vestibule and door, and
fitted a composite stable door to the rear of the
home.
It was the first flush sash job we had done with
the new system, and it was a conservation
project, so the transoms and designs had to be
identical to the original windows. It was definitely
a challenge but completely worth it when the
customer told us how happy they were and
winning the award was the icing on the cake.
TI: What’s the most frustrating thing about
your job?
LH: I don’t know if frustrating is the word, but
I think managing a team can sometimes be
difficult. That is mostly because we have a
passionate team that really cares about getting
the job right for customers.
Sometimes there can be a difference in opinion
of how we do that which can cause some friction,
but once we all pull together, we know that we
will get the right outcome.
TI: And the most satisfying?
LH: When you see a finished job, it looks great,
and you get a really positive review from the
customer. We get no end of thank you cards and
messages from satisfied customers and I love it
when they name individuals and give our team
“Supply chain issues
are still there, but it
is getting better – the
cost of living increases
are a bit of a concern”
credit for the hard work that they do!
Also, it’s quite satisfying to take a step back and
look at what we’ve achieved in the last few years.
We made the decision to stop fabricating and
focus on installations in March 2020 – which in
hindsight was one of the best business decisions
we could have made. We’ve recently opened an
amazing new showroom in Sheffield and I’m very
proud of the service we have delivered, even
through the challenges of COVID-19.
TI: How do you deal with difficult customers?
LH: The thing to remember with difficult
customers is that there are some people around
who you will never please, and you never know
what else is going on in their lives.
Home improvements are a big investment and
customers always want the best they can get for
their budget.
You can always tell when people have been
burned by tradespeople in the past, and you
Bad reviews can be a challenge sometimes, but if
you respond in the right way, I think any potential
customers looking at them can see how good
you are at dealing with situations if something
does go wrong. We are always focused on good
customer service so we can usually give a
detailed response.
Although, it always surprises me when the
comments from the customer are really positive –
“couldn’t fault them...amazing service” and then
they give us a 9! Where’s our 10?!
TI: What’s the biggest issue currently affecting
you as an installer?
LH: Supply chain issues are still there, but it is
getting better, and we have chosen our supply
partners carefully, so they always keep us
informed if there are going to be any issues.
The cost-of-living increases are a bit of a
concern as, obviously, that could affect how
much cash people still have to spend on home
improvements, so that issue of uncertainty in the
market is a bit of a challenge.
Like many installers, we’ve done really well over
the last few years, and we expect there will be a
drop-off soon – a small one might be welcome so
that we can all reset and do some catching up!
Contract Installer leads Talk
MORE THAN JUST A LEAD PROVIDER
Andy Royle, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Leads 2 Trade, gives his thoughts on
lead generation for the year ahead and explains how the company is working with installers
to provide better value.
Total Installer (TI) How has the start of the year Andy Royle
gone with someone else, or they no longer require
a quote.
been for Leads 2 Trade?
Andy Royle (AR): We’ve had a very good start
To make things easier, the lead is only sold to
to the year, aided by the build up of consumer
one other company, so there is more chance of
enquiries we received over the Christmas period.
winning the work, while the service is no pitch no
To help us hit the ground running, we opened
fee, which means that a member only has to pay
our call centre for a couple of days between
for the lead if they sit and pitch it.
Christmas and New Year to qualify the backlog for
Installers will have to work harder to convert
our members.
leads into business this year and they need to
Thanks to our guaranteed appointment, no
look at how many leads they convert to a survey
pitch no fee, service, we were able to book
or quote, how many of those quotes get converted
appointments for our members with consumers
into an order, and the true cost of sale from that
for January.
lead source.
Consumer enquiries are where we’d expect them
to be in terms of volume and are massively higher
than this time last year.
One of the real plusses has been the new takeups
from installers we have had. In the first week
of January, we had a record 24 new supplier
enquiries which was great to see. Installers have
had work falling into their lap, and this is a sign
that intent is coming back alongside consumer
enquiries becoming more consistent again.
TI: Why do you think you have had such a
take-up from installers?
AR: There has definitely been an artificial peak
and order books have been bursting at the
seams, but that was never going to last forever.
With some installers reporting a definite shift
to receiving fewer enquiries from their selfgenerated
efforts at the back end of last year,
winning work will not be quite as easy this year.
The problem for installers is they will have put
stuff in place over the last 12-18 months to
be able to manage how busy they have been,
from extra resources, people, machinery, and
marketing, and they will need to maintain that
volume to feed it.
When demand dips, installers are left with very
few alternatives – they can increase their own
marketing, go door-to-door, or use a third-party
lead generation company like Leads 2 Trade.
Invariably, when times are lean, installers are
more reliant on our services and reach out to us
to help them generate the leads they want.
TI: Do you think some installers see leads
from a third-party lead generation company
as lacking substance?
AR: There is a myth that leads generated from a
third-party lead generation company are cheap,
lacking in quality, time consuming and, because
the lead invariably goes to three other installers,
much harder to convert.
But that’s not the case with our leads. Instead of
buying a sales lead, our premium appointment
booking service means our members are buying a
confirmed appointment against set criteria, so all
our member has to do is turn up and sell.
We call the consumer, book, and confirm the
appointment so the installer doesn’t have to
waste valuable time calling leads up multiple
times only to get a belated response that they’ve
TI: How are Leads 2 Trade working with
members to help them maintain those levels?
AR: We are focusing on working even closer with
members to provide even more value and make
sure they are not only getting the best service, but
that they are getting what they want from their
leads to grow their business.
Each installer has a dedicated account manager,
our area sales managers are drilling down into
what their average order values are and what is
an acceptable cost of sale for them, so we can
work with them and help them get the conversion
rate they need from the thousands of leads we are
generating.
With our no pitch no fee booked appointment
leads providing a cost of sale that’s almost three
times less on average than for a standard double
qualified lead that most of our competitors supply,
we are perfectly placed to help installers get the
best lead value and achieve an acceptable cost
of sale.
Augmented Reality
THE NEXT GENERATION
Andy Clear, COO and Co-Founder of Augmented Reality Creations (ARC) shares how the
company’s new tech innovation, ARC Design, is set to transform the conservatory market…
With house prices at an all-time high,
today’s homeowners are much more
likely to improve their homes than put
their property on the market, while a rising trend
of permanent home working has also boosted the
need for home improvements as Brits invest in
transforming their working spaces.
As a result, the industry has seen a huge
spike in demand for things like garden rooms
and extensions, but by far one of the most
popular home improvement investments is a
conservatory.
It’s no surprise then that there are over 9,000
conservatory installers across the UK – but of
course that also means that competition is tough.
In today’s market, with technology at our
fingertips, it’s become more difficult for installers
to sell conservatories using generic images from
a brochure or online – thanks to smartphones
and access to websites like Pinterest,
homeowners understand the market better than
ever, meaning they’re less likely to commit to a
Andy (left) alongside Andrew Scott and Co-
Founder Zack Tuff (right)
Andy Clear
big investment without first clearly seeing the
value of their purchase.
As a result, more and more installers are looking
for new, modern ways to help them win more
sales, and that’s where ARC Design comes in.
Created by AR tech company Augmented Reality
Creations (ARC), ARC Design is a web-based
3D design and visualisation software tool which
allows homeowners to easily design their own
conservatory within an installer’s website,
request a quote, and then use the unique
augmented reality features to view their design
while walking around their garden.
And, after significant backing from investment
firm Knightstone Capital, headed up by
Purplex Marketing founder Andrew Scott, the
new technology is reportedly set to take the
conservatory market by storm.
“The software has been
crucially designed for
use by homeowners
with no previous
design experience or
product knowledge”
How does it work?
With ARC Design, potential customers can design
their dream conservatory directly within an
installer’s website, choosing their preferred style,
shape, and materials, as well as doors, windows,
roof, and any other decorative extras.
Once they’ve finalised their design, customers
have two choices – they can either submit
their design to the installer to get an informed
quote, or they can use the innovative augmented
reality software of ARC Design to project a
virtual, explorable, life-size 3D model of their
conservatory onto their home via a smartphone
or tablet, allowing them to visualise and explore
where it would end up in real life.
ARC COO and Co-founder Andy Clear commented:
“Unlike other conservatory design software,
ARC Design requires no training for use by sales
reps – the software has been crucially designed
for use by homeowners with no previous design
Augmented Reality
Continued from page 50
The software is hosted on an installer’s website which
allows homeowners to design their own conservatory
experience or product knowledge.
“Sitting within an installer’s website, ARC Design
enables homeowners to play with their options
on their own time, not the installer’s, further
enabling the acceleration of in-house sales calls
on any smart device.”
“The software is set
to revolutionise the
conservatory market,
helping installers grow
and improve as we
move towards a new
digital world” - Andy Clear
Key benefits
ARC Design improves conservatory sales
performance in three key areas: sales speed,
sales price, and lead generation.
Andy explained: “Browsing web traffic is a huge
and often untapped source of clients. With ARC
Design, customers are hooked in on an installer’s
website with a simple and engaging design
experience.
“They play with, and educate themselves about,
their options, and the time spent doing so is fully
associated with an installer’s brand, positioning
that installer as a frontrunner for the installation.
“All the homeowner’s design preferences and
contact details are automatically delivered to
the installer, eliminating the frustrating back and
forth process between clients and sales reps.
“A sales rep’s first interaction with a prospect
can then be highly informed and enable easy
demonstration of expertise, giving a faster route
to sale and opening the door for a higher price.”
For word of mouth and other more traditional
leads, ARC Design is said to be ‘in a league of its
own’.
Installers can send links for pre-configured
designs to potential customers to explore at
their own leisure, meaning when a house call is
necessary, the experience is accelerated with
rapid designing and cutting edge augmented
reality walkthroughs.
ARC Design’s instant augmented reality
visualisations can place a conservatory on to any
house, allowing clients to explore their new space
to scale and in lifelike detail.
Add a sales ‘wow factor’
Andy concluded: “With ARC Design, conservatory
installers can add a real wow factor to their
sales visits, giving potential customers more
control over their investments, increasing their
conversion rates and potentially growing their
business.
“The software is set to revolutionise the
conservatory market, helping installers grow
ARC DE TRIUMPH
Tech start-up Augmented Reality Creations
(ARC) have been named as finalists in the
2022 Go:Tech Awards, in recognition of ARC
Design, the technological innovation that is
said to be taking the conservatory market by
storm.
The Go:Tech Awards celebrate businesses and
entrepreneurs leading the way in technology and
innovation across the UK.
Beating hundreds of entries and earning a
finalist position in the ‘Best use of VR or AR’
category, ARC Design is a platform that sits within
an installer’s website and helps homeowners
design their conservatory within seconds.
Once finalised, customers can either submit
their design to the installer to get an informed
quote, or they can use the innovative augmented
reality software of ARC Design to project a
virtual, explorable, life-size 3D model of their
conservatory onto their home via a smartphone
or tablet, allowing them to visualise and explore
where it would end up in real life.
Unlike other conservatory design software,
ARC Design requires no training for use by sales
reps – the software has been crucially designed
for use by homeowners with no previous design
experience or product knowledge.
ARC COO and Co-founder Andy Clear commented:
“It’s an honour to be named a finalist in the Go:Tech
Awards, and to be recognised for ARC Design, our
latest tech innovation, is an incredible achievement.
“I know how game-changing ARC Design is for
conservatory sales, and am delighted to have the
judges’ agreement in such a prestigious awards
programme.”
Winners of the Go:Tech Awards will be
announced on Thursday 19th May at a ceremony
held at Bristol’s Ashton Gate Stadium.
Rather than see it as the culmination of its efforts,
it is instead being viewed as the beginning of a
HAPPY HOME WORKING SETTINGS
Like many in the UK, the team from
Folding Doors 2U decided that
homeworking offered them a great work/
life balance during the pandemic.
However, after using their snug for close to
two years, they decided it was time to claim
back the room within their home in Maldon,
Essex, and create a more permanent home
working solution with help from Ultraframe.
Director Kate Farr explained: “We loved the
benefits that homeworking offered us during
the pandemic and decided to make this a
permanent way of life. However, we knew that to do this long term, we needed a proper home office
solution, rather than using the room that had previously been our snug. Using an existing base in the
garden, a modular size Garden Room of 4.2m x 3.6m was the perfect fit. Ultraframe Garden Rooms
are available in a choice of two styles (Studio or Pavilion) and can be personalised with rooflights and
a range of options for the side walls including full length glazed panels.
Kate said: “We are thrilled with the finished office which has given us back a room in our house and
looks great in our garden, sitting perfectly against our patio and pergola.”
PVC-U
HAVE WE GOT AN IMAGE PROBLEM?
As a new YouGov survey reveals almost half of UK homeowners would not purchase home
improvement products containing plastic, Rob McGlennon, Deceuninck Managing Director,
asks: what does this mean for PVC-U windows?
Consumers are increasingly buying products
based on their environmental credentials.
This shift in behaviour can be attributed to a
growing awareness of the effects of climate change,
thanks in part to prominent figures such as David
Attenborough and Greta Thunberg, and the highprofile
political summit COP 26.
A recent survey commissioned by Deceuninck, and
carried out by YouGov, proves that homeowners
are responding to those environmentally focused
messages.
It found that two-thirds of respondents would choose
home improvement products with a higher level of
recycled content than competing items, but with the
same performance level and the same price tag.
A significant number of those (37%) would pay more
for them.
The same survey also found that while clear
environmentally friendly messages were resonating
with homeowners who were choosing home
improvement products, they were sometimes
confusing and counterproductive.
“Either we have got a massive
challenge to overcome, or we’ve got a
fantastic opportunity on our hands”
hands,” Rob McGlennon, Deceuninck’s MD, said.
“On the one hand, we have educated homeowners
who are carefully selecting products based on their
content and sustainability credentials, but on the
other, some of those eco messages are getting lost
in translation.
“We have homeowners who are well-versed in the
damage that single-use plastics can have on the
environment, yet they lump PVC-U windows in that
category, which gives them something of an image
problem.”
Rob said that while the increased awareness
about the impact single-use plastics have on the
environment is positive, the fact that this survey
reveals that consumers aren’t drawing a line
between them and low maintenance, long-life and
fully recyclable plastic building products is a warning
of things to come.
“We need to act now and start to communicate
effectively with the homeowner,” he added.
PVC-U is a highly recyclable building material with
a Building Research Establishment Green Guide
to Specification A and A+ rating for domestic and
commercial application.
This is founded on a recognised Reference Service
Life of at least 35 years and the fact that PVC-U can
37% of homeowners said they would choose
products with a higher recycled content
Significantly, the survey found that 44% of total
respondents rejected the prospect of buying home
improvements manufactured in ‘plastic’.
This is despite the fact that 69% of those surveyed
said the windows in their homes were currently
manufactured from PVC-U.
Meanwhile, wood is seen as the most sustainable
material (46%) when compared to aluminium and
PVC-U, yet only 23% of respondents have timber
windows.
“Either we have got a massive challenge to
overcome, or we’ve got a fantastic opportunity on our
60 T I MARCH 2022 PRACTICAL CONTENT FOR THE GLAZING INSTALLER & HOME IMPROVEMENT SPECIALIST

Using recycled materials can reduce
carbon emissions by 90,000 tonnes
be recycled up to 10 times without impacting on
performance.
Deceuninck has invested more than 15 million
Euros in one of the world’s most advanced PVC-U
recycling and compounding facilities, which give it
the capability to reprocess up to 45,000 tonnes of
post-consumer and post-manufacturing PVC-U per
year – the equivalent of preventing three million
windows from going to landfill annually.
Use of recycled material also delivers a reduction in
CO 2 emissions of 90,000 tonnes compared to virgin
feedstocks as well as a 90% energy saving.
“We’re not alone,” Rob continued. “A number of
other systems companies have also invested.
That, however, amounts to nothing if we don’t
communicate to the end user what we’re doing.
“As we’ve discovered, sustainability is a
key consideration for people choosing home
improvement products.
“People will choose products they see as more
sustainable over those that they don’t, and many are
prepared to pay more for them.
“However, it is clear that PVC-U windows have
something of an image problem, and some of those
virtuous anti-single-use-plastic messages are
deterring people from buying products that are both
recyclable, and have a high recycled content.”
The YouGov survey clearly highlights the importance
consumers place on environmentally friendly
products.
Companies that can successfully communicate the
sustainability benefits of PVC-U windows have an
active and growing market to go after.
“Coming up against preconceptions about plastic
seems like a difficult hurdle to overcome,” Rob says.
“But we are all actually singing from the same hymn
sheet, so once you make that clear, the rest is plain
sailing.”
Roof Windows
BRIDGING THE GAP
Colin Wells, Head of Technical at Keylite Roof Windows, looks at how installers can ensure
their builds remain compliant, sustainable and deliver optimum levels of wellbeing for
homeowners.
The heating and powering of buildings
currently accounts for 40 per cent of the
UK’s total energy consumption , a figure
which demands government action to ensure
change.
On the 15th of December 2021, the UK
government published an updated version of
Approved Document L: Conservation of Fuel and
Power.
This change means that from the 15th of
June 2022, new homes in England must
produce around 30 per cent less net carbon
emissions, and existing homes will be subject
to higher standards when it comes to added
extensions and thermal upgrades, all in a
step towards net zero carbon building in
2025.
Two of the biggest areas of heat loss are roofs
and windows, and from June this year the
specification and application of a roof and its
Colin Wells
materials must be compatible with the rest of the
building design.
The purpose of Approved Document L is to ensure
energy efficiency in buildings.
The Target CO 2 Emission Rate (TER) and Target
Fabric Energy Efficiency (TFEE) rate are the
From June 2022, homes must produce
30 per cent less net carbon emissions
“When it comes to heat
loss, one of the biggest
issues is thermal
bridging, when all too
often double glazing
is seen as the main
culprit of this”
minimum energy requirements for a new-build
dwelling.
To showcase that a building complies with
regulation requirements, Dwelling CO 2 emission
Rate (DER) and Dwelling Fabric Energy Efficiency
(DFEE) rates are calculated, and both must be no
higher than the TER and TFEE.
When it comes to heat loss, one of the biggest
issues is thermal bridging, when all too often
double glazing is seen as the main culprit of
this.
However, despite meeting relevant standards
it’s often in the installation of a product where
cold bridging can occur, reducing its thermal
efficiency.
Installation of roof windows is often left to the
manufacturer’s discretion, with most stipulating
that a gap is required around roof windows
to enable on-site adjustments and ease of
installation.
This gap is supposed to be ‘filled in’ after or
during installation to reduce the impact of
thermal bridging.
However, this is rarely stipulated in building
designs and the retrofittable product of a
thermal foam is often not on specifications,
Roof Windows
Continued from page 62
Left: Keylite’s thermal collar
Right: The company’s roof window
likely because at this level of detail there isn’t
the awareness or the incentive to purchase
extra materials.
If this area is not insulated it can lead to
cold bridging on roof windows – where the
gap between the roof and window creates a
cold section all around the frame due to the
temperature differentiation between the outside
and inside, which contributes toward heat loss
and can eventually lead to condensation and
mould.
To make houses more comfortable and energyefficient,
the onus should be taken away from
the installers and products should be designed
and specified with optimum thermal efficiency in
mind.
Manufacturers should ‘design in’ features that
eliminate thermal bridging, which reduces
the risk of non-compliance and delivers a
build that is closer to the expected energy
performance.
The difference between the on-paper
specifi cation and the as-built performance
often occurs because of attention to detail
and the lack of awareness that a product will
only perform as specifi ed if it is also correctly
installed.
Keylite is aware of the issue surrounding the
Above: Products should be designed and specified with
thermal efficiency in mind according to Keylite.
installation of roof windows and has taken the
lead in ensuring it removes the possibility of this
occurring, ensuring its products are designed
in such a way that contractors don’t have to
consider the ‘gap’ when specifying or fitting roof
windows.
With this principle in mind, Keylite Roof Windows
introduced an Integrated Expanding Thermal
Collar for its products, the only system of its kind
and the only company in the UK to address this
issue.
“The difference
between on-paper
specification and
as-built performance
often occurs [due to]
the lack of awareness
that a product will only
perform as specified
if it also correctly
installed”
Keylite’s thermal collar is already integrated into
the roof window profile, so when on-site installers
can fit with a 20mm gap for ease of installation
and then simply pull the tab on the window to
release the expandable thermal collar, which
then bridges the gap between frame and building
envelope.
This not only saves time and cost for the installer,
but also creates more thermally efficient and
comfortable homes.
Perfect For Your Next
Re-Roofing Project!
Designed with the environment in mind
Does your current supplier have the
lightest synthetic slate tile on the
market?
Liteslate can weigh as little as 10kg per m²,
ideal for projects in need of a light footprint,
or older structures that cannot hold heavy,
traditional tiles.
Does your current supplier care
about the environment?
14 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean
every year due to the use of virgin plastics.
Britmet Liteslate is manufactured using over
90% recycled polymers. By the end of 2021,
Britmet will recycle over 3 million kilograms of
polypropylene.
Does your current supplier achieve a
12 ° Pitch?
Liteslate was tested by the BRE for roof pitches
as low as 12 °, offering the ideal lightweight
roofing solution for our customers, with a
traditional tile appearance.
Does your current supplier
manufacture in Britain?
By manufacturing in the UK, we pride ourselves
on upholding a high standard of professional
ethics. With a central location like the West
Midlands, we work with a number of distribution
networks, boasting national coverage.
Does your current supplier use
more than 30% limestone content?
Limestone content over 30% often leads to
colour fade in synthetic slate. Thats why
Britmet only uses 20% to ensure you have a
roof that lasts a lifetime.
Does your current supplier focus on
usability rather than quality?
As Liteslate has a reduced limestone content,
it will not crack, split or break. However, it can
easily be cut using a circular saw or a jigsaw.
DEKKO SEES STRONG DEMAND FOR COLOUR
Dekko Window Systems has seen a strong demand for coloured PVC-U and aluminium, with the
fabricator reporting that 55% of the orders it received in the past year were for coloured profile.
Sales Director Kurt Greatrex commented: “Coloured profile has been a growing trend across the industry for a
while now, especially in the post-lockdown home improvement boom.
“Homeowners have been investing more and more in their properties, and there’s certainly an uptake in
people choosing colours rather than the standard white products we’re used to.”
Further boosting Dekko’s colour sales is the recent launch of 10 new colours by Residence 9.
Kurt concluded: “It’s certainly a trend I see continuing, and at Dekko, thanks to our valued and reliable
suppliers, we’re in a strong position to keep our customers happy.” www.dekkowindows.com
MULTIPLE JOBS CREATED AT NBP'S HINCKLEY DEPOT
An initial 15 jobs have been created as NBP’s 30,000 sq ft super-sized Hinckley Depot in Lime Kiln Lane
opens for business. The new depot means customers in the Midlands now have access to the biggest
brands in building plastics which includes roofline, drainage, composite decking, cladding, insulation,
sealants and much more.
The business is said to already have two highly successful depots in Leeds and Bolton and chose Hinckley to be
the location of its third depot to facilitate expansion into the Midlands. Customers in the region will reportedly get
the benefit of faster deliveries of more products as stock levels are kept high at all locations.
Steve Jones, Sales Director at Northern Building Plastics, said: “We expect 40 jobs to be created in total including drivers, warehousing and sales
roles, with the rest being filled in the next few months as the number of customers grows.” www.nbp.co.uk
Xpert Advice
FENESTRATION'S STILL OUR FORTE
In this month’s column for Total Installer, Richard Bryant, Window Ware’s Commercial
Director, explains why despite being up against it over the last couple of years, installers can
still count on the company’s range of just-the-job hand tools and consumables.
We understand that specialist glazing jobs
require specialist equipment. There’s
nothing more frustrating than having to
make do and ‘bend’ general purpose tools to work
for skilled glazing tasks; the job invariably takes
longer, and you’ll have to work harder to achieve
the professional results you’re after.
The Xpert brand is totally tailored to the needs of
the fenestration professional.
It was created by a team of experienced ex-fitters
who have been in your shoes, felt your frustration
and ultimately took it upon themselves almost
12 years ago to fill the gap in the market with a
much-needed range of cleverly designed tools
and equipment that was purpose-built for the
door and window industry.
Today, Xpert products not only help installers, but
fabricators too, achieve the best results in less
time.
And because they’ve been designed with insider
knowledge of how they are really used on site or
in the factory, they are always up to the task and
eliminate many of the irritations associated with
employing general-purpose tools.
Our Xpert 32mm chisel knife, with its strong,
precision-manufactured blade, is THE tool for
deglazing windows.
Our Xpert Glass Gauge makes measuring the
thickness of fitted glass units quick and easy,
without having to dismantle the door or window
first!
Likewise, our mitre shears make cutting gasket
and trims so much easier, slicing effortlessly
through plastic, rubber, or wood up to 15mm thick
at angles up to 45 degrees.
Richard Bryant
Even our Xpert PVCu saw isn’t just your average
saw! Its fine-toothed blade has been specially
designed to cut quickly and cleanly through
plastic building products like fascia and trim.
Every single item in the Xpert range has been
developed to alleviate common complaints,
perfect results and streamline an installer’s most
frequent, yet most essential tasks.
A fitter’s favourite and a trusted trade
counter fixture
Our range of glazing tools and finishing essentials
has won over trade professionals across the
country with its winning formula of practical
design, intelligent features and hard-working
dependability.
In fact, in the last five years alone, Xpert sales
have grown significantly, and our products are
now sold in over 300 stockists nationwide.
With a steadily growing fan base and quality
hand tools currently in greater demand than ever,
Xpert has pulled out all the stops to ensure its
stockists have a ready, reliable, and responsive
“There’s nothing more
frustrating than having
to make do and ‘bend’
general purpose tools
to work for skilled
glazing tasks”
supply of all their top-sellers and fast-moving
product lines. And that’s welcome news for busy
installers...
Our healthy stock reserves and proven delivery
service to stockists (demonstrated by the 98.77%
average OTIF on Xpert products for 2022) mean
fitters can always get their hands on the Xpert
tools and equipment they need to meet their
deadlines and do the job right.
Head to https://www.xperttools.co.uk to check
out the full range of Xpert hands tools and
consumables for glazing professionals, as well as
find your nearest stockist.
You’ll also find a comprehensive selection of air
tools and machinery spares too, which are right
up the street of door and window manufacturers!
Tool trends
TRANSFORMING YOUR TOOLS
Andy Mills, Managing Director of FEIN UK, offers his insights on the latest tool trends for
installers in the coming year and the latest innovations in the home improvement sector
following a turbulent couple of years.
The initial height of the pandemic and first
lockdown completely halted the home
improvement sector.
However, as restrictions were eased and
installers were allowed back into people’s homes
to continue work, consumer spend on home
renovations surged considerably. In fact, data
from Houzz & Home confirmed spend on home
renovations surged by 36% during the last year to
a median of £15,000.
Of those upgrades, windows/skylights and
exterior doors are amongst the top exterior feature
upgrades UK homeowners have been investing in.
But with a huge backlog of jobs still causing
havoc across the industry two years on, combined
with the supply chain crisis, efficient and reliable
tools to ultimately improve productivity will be
essential to successfully navigate an increasingly
demanding market.
As the inventor of the first electric hand held
power tool, our strategy at FEIN has been rooted
in innovation and efficiency for over 150 years.
Our ethos is centred on providing solutions to the
everyday challenges tradespeople face.
The power tools of today have evolved
considerably, encompassing so much more
thanks to innovation in technology accelerating
FEIN’s cordless MultiMaster
“Efficient and reliable tools to ultimately improve
productivity will be essential to successfully
navigate an increasingly demanding market”
considerably in recent years.
As the home improvement sector continues to
recover following the impact of pandemic, what
are the biggest trends currently paving the way in
the tools industry that installers should have on
their radar?
And what innovations are shaping the future of
this ever-evolving space?
Efficient tools to improve productivity
Declining productivity is having a huge impact
on many sectors across the UK, something many
tool manufacturers like FEIN have front of mind
during the initial R&D process.
As such, we’ve seen a real surge in the use
of oscillating multi-tools (OMTs) that enable
installers to complete a vast range of jobs with
just one tool.
FEIN’s cordless MultiMaster, for instance, is
compatible with around 180 accessories from the
Starlock, Starlock Plus and StarlockMax performance
classes. Meaning, it’s quick, easy and convenient to
switch applications without switching tools.
protecting from the long-term effects of hand arm
vibration syndrome.
Not only can the MultiMaster be used to renovate
windows and doors, but also to remove adhesive
residues, sanding, tiling, furniture assembly, and
installing new flooring, amongst other interior
jobs, increasing productivity and efficiency, and in
turn driving profitability.
Embracing innovation
Recent years have seen tools become noticeably
more cutting-edge, thanks to advancements in
technology.
Everything from increased capability and greater
precision, to improved health and safety, have
really shaped the direction the industry has
headed in.
There’s a lot of opportunity for installers to
embrace this new technology to ultimately help
them to improve quality, efficiency and overall
aesthetic of a job, thanks to such advancements.
For instance, just a few years ago, several
tools were required to complete a single job but
thanks to a growing market of universal OMTs,
many have been able to streamline their ways of
working.
The new technology available on the market
is enabling installers to successfully navigate
current market challenges, while completing jobs
in a timely manner and to the highest possible
standard.
Putting health and safety top of the
agenda
The Health and Safety Executive recently
revealed injuries and ill health to workers
are costing the UK construction industry
approximately £1.29bn a year.
Traditionally, tools weren’t built for a full day on
the job and in some instances have resulted in
long-term health repercussions for installers.
However, the health and safety of end users is
something that’s always been firmly front of mind
for us.
Capability and greater precision are just two of
the recent advancements of tools for installers
“It’s important the
improvements
homeowners are
spending on will stand
the test of time and are
worth their investment”
Investing in the right tools and those with a built
in anti-vibration system will ensure continuous
safe and pleasant working, thanks to minimal
vibrations and outstanding noise insulation, while
It’s also important to take the time to read
the manufacturer’s guidelines every time you
purchase a new tool. This not only ensures you’re
getting the most out of the tool and are able to
capitalise on all features, but that you’re also
operating it safely.
Standing the test of time
Recent extreme weather across the UK has
resulted in increasing damage to the exterior of
many people’s properties, namely windows and
doors. And those with more traditional wooden
openings are more likely to experience flaking
paint, often leading to moisture entering the
structure which can inevitably result in more
serious and costly damage.
For this very reason, in addition to the fact that
the cost of living is rising and consumers are
increasingly tightening their purse strings, it’s
important the improvements homeowners are
spending on will stand the test of time and are
worth their investment.
We know the fact weather is becoming more extreme
is resulting in wooden window frames and doors
not being quite as durable as they once were and
typically now requiring a new coat of paint every
couple of years at least.
However, to protect the material as much as possible
and ensure it lasts, effective preparation before any
improvement works is crucial.
Ensuring any old paint is fully removed is
essential in this part of the process, followed
by carefully sanding down the surface before
applying any new paint will ensure the refreshed
openings remain in good condition in the longterm.
However, while this can be quite a lengthy process,
a professional oscillating multi-tool (OMT) will
considerably simplify this job, saving a lot of
laborious and time-consuming manual work.
Rhino Products has launched its popular rear step parking sensor integration product, Connect+, for the Renault
Master and Vauxhall Vivaro platforms.
Rear vehicle steps are an important accessory for many van users, providing a safe and secure platform to enter the
vehicle, as well as access the roof. Reversing sensors for commercial vehicles have long been an expectation for many
years now, however making alterations to introduce an external step with parking detection technology has previously
been a time-consuming process, often requiring specialist knowledge, complicated rewiring and of course, added
expenditure.
Connect+ neatly solves this problem by integrating each OEM sensor into the step via a simple ‘plug and play’ cable.
