Application and care – water-miscible cooling lubricants
Cooling lubricant concentrates are partly comprising
frost-sensitive components and may therefore only
be stored in frost-free rooms. There is a danger of separation
if subjected to cold for a length of time. Cooling
lubricants affected in this way generally do not emulsify
satisfactorily, if at all. We recommend thorough mixing of
water-miscible cooling lubricants after long storage, through
rolling, stirring etc.
Thoroughly clean the central plant or machine tool
circulation system before every new preparation with a
fresh emulsion. Use ZUBORA ® SYSTEMCLEANER from
1% to 2%, depending on impurities, for this purpose, added
to the used emulsion or solution before the last working shift.
Leave for about 24 hours before removing the emulsion. It
is recommended to rinse the entire circulation system using
0.5% - 1.5% diluted emulsion and only then re-fill with fresh
emulsion or solution.
Correct preparation of the emulsion is important to ensure
its stability:
■ Never prepare the emulsion directly in the machine
■ Use only clean mixing equipment, stirrers and containers
■ Stir the concentrate into the water using a thin, even
stream (oil-in-water emulsion), never vice versa!
■ Alternative preparation using an emulsion mixer
■ Use only clean tap water or well water
(potable quality)
ZUBORA ® hand refractometer FAG 800 emulsion mixer Special indicator strips
The fastest way to measure the cooling lubricant concentration
is to use a ZUBORA ® hand refractometer. The reading
must be multiplied by the correction factor in each case, i.e.
reading x correction factor = mixing ratio. Should the concentration
be too low, e.g. as a result of depletion, do not top
up with concentrate but use a highly concentrated master
emulsion instead. If the concentration is too high, through
evaporation of water, for instance, we recommend adding a
low emulsion concentration.
A fresh preparation of emulsion generally has a pH value
between 8.8 and 9.3. Special indicator strips are used for
the measurement, e.g. from Merck, Darmstadt/Germany.
A rapidly reducing pH value could indicate changes in the
cooling lubricant. This could be due to e.g. microbial activities
or contamination with acidic substances.
The hardness of the water can be measured with total
hardness test strips, e.g. from Merck, Darmstadt/Germany.
Water that is too hard may result in low stability of the
emulsion and the formation of lime soaps. If the water is too
soft, the emulsion may foam.
Lubrication of machine tools
To fully ensure the precision of modern machine tools,
it is necessary to guarantee perfect compatibility between
water-miscible cooling lubricants and slideway oil. We offer
you the optimal combination, using our high performance
ZUBORA ® series cooling lubricants together with our
DIVINOL ® T- EP series slideway oils. The excellent demulsibility
of our guideway and slideway oils and their high
film strength and adhesion protect against stick-slip effects
and associated machining problems. Due to the coordinated
addition of additives to track oil and cooling lubricant,
black spots (groove image) are largely prevented (also refer
to our technical leaflet on guideway and slideway oils).
We recommend using our EP low viscosity greases DIVINOL ®
Lithogrease 00 and DIVINOL ® Lithogrease 000 for use on
greased linear systems with roller, ball or needle bearings
(linear guides).
