Termyn Gwari Fleghes
(Children’s Playtime, in Cornish)
Spring is here at last! New leaves are coming out in the trees in woods and lanes and
more and more flowers are opening in the warmer spring weather. The evenings are
much lighter and when you go out for a walk you will hopefully be able to see and
hear many birds as they are busy making their nests and feeding their chicks. Lots
of the birds live here all year round but some only visit us for the summer. In winter
the summer visitors fly to warmer places in Africa, then in the spring they will fly
hundreds of miles back to make their nests and raise their chicks here.
Most of these summer visitors are already here, the only ones that haven’t arrived
yet are swifts, which will not arrive until the beginning of May. Swallows, house martins
and sand martins have already made their nests and are hunting insects around our
homes and fields and farms. They only visit in the summer because that is when the
weather is warm enough for plenty of insects to be flying for them to feed on. They
catch all their food while they are flying, they even drink from pools as they fly over
the water.
It is Easter this month, a religious festival which is closely linked in our minds to new
beginnings and new life. People often send Easter cards with pictures of lambs, chicks
and eggs and give gifts of chocolate eggs.
It is fun to decorate ordinary eggs for Easter and is quite easy to do. If you decorate
hardboiled eggs using these methods, they are still perfectly fine to eat.
Method 1.- the simplest! Colour your eggs with sharpies or any other non toxic
coloured pens. Make your pattern as complicated as you like. When you have finished,
decide who has decorated the best egg, then eat them!
Method 2 – (still pretty simple)- make sure you ask an adult to help with the shaving
foam and food colouring.
a)hardboil your eggs and leave to cool.
b)spray some shaving foam into a shallow tray and spread it out.
c)add some drops of different food colouring into the foam and swirl it through with a
skewer or a toothpick.
d) place the egg into the foam and roll it so that it is covered with foam.
e) repeat with more eggs, adding more colours if you want. Place the foamed eggs
on a plate or tray and let them dry for 20 mins, or until the foam starts to dry on the
outside.
f) wipe the eggs off with paper towels and you will find that the egg shell is stained
with a marbled effect.
Quotations
Just come across a book of quotations printed by Wakefields of
Camelford possibly in the 1930s.
It was compiled by a Rev H. W. Charity and is comprised of quotes
contributed by people, I imagine, from around the Methodist Circuit
- including many from Delabole. HH

Troubles are like babies,
The more you nurse them, the bigger they grow.

You will never be sorry for - doing your level best;
hearing before judging;
thinking before speaking;
sticking to your principles;
being generous to an enemy;
keeping your promises.

To be conscious that you are ignorant
is a great step to knowledge.
