Keithstepped down from hiscommittee role as ConservationOfficer for MCV in order to devote time toyouth conservation projects. He also moved toSolent Grange alongside Sturt Pond to enjoyobserving birds at close quarters. Keith iscontinuing to write about local natural historyand his next book; The Historic Birdlife ofMilford-on-Sea will be published shortly.Keith has formed a new ‘birding group’ called‘Wings’ aimed primarily at encouragingyoungsters’ interest in local birds. He hasinvited four young ladies to become ‘wildlifestory-tellers’. The girls will read short stories tonursery and pre-school youngsters as theywatch pictures from the books unfold onscreen. Also taking much of Keith’s time is the HurstSpit to Lymington Project. This is looking at howour protected coastline nature reserves will beaffected over the next 100 years. Sea levels arepredicted to rise by at least one metre. This willcause coastal problems to nationally andinternationally important habitats.Keith is working on mitigation proposals in casewe lose some of our wildlife habitats. Lossescould include saline lagoons, saltmarsh andseabird breeding sites. The Environment Agencykeeps saying ‘Work with Nature’. Mitigationmeasures could include allowing seawater waveaction to dissipate over larger land areas, saltmarsh restoration, the creation of a seabirdbreeding island sanctuary, extending wetlandswith muddy bird-feeding areas and allowingnature to take the lead in creating habitats, whilst protecting properties and improvingamenity facilities for us all to enjoy.Keith added “MCV has a fantastically hardworkingcommittee and active members. It hasbeen a pleasure working with so manydedicated volunteers. I shall continue tosupport and help progress their aspirations”.Contact Keith about any of these matters at:keithmetcalf@btinternet.com or phone 07771May and on the Field on the 4th June. Please mention The Village Voice918449.when responding to adverts57
