How Hampshire will be helping UkraineDear All,I hope you are keeping well. My household wasinvaded by Covid in the past month for the firsttime, and although I managed to somehowavoid it myself, it was not pleasant for myhusband. A month on he still has anintermittent cough. For anyone catching it forthe first time, I suggest lots of gargling with TCP,plenty of Lemsip and honey, plus rest and sleeparound the clock. And please get your jabs ifyou still haven’t had your 3 - you can still getthem. Enquire with your GP or visit nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-walk-in-coronavirus-covid-19-vaccination-siteI was watching the news today, on the 15 th dayof the conflict in Ukraine, and the news itemshowed elderly Ukrainian people waiting tocome to Britain in Poland. I was struck by thefact, with many of the people shown wearingmasks, how awful it must be, not only to beleaving your homeland and fleeing a war in your80s, but also still at serious risk of catchingCovid. These people also have no accesspresently to the good care and health servicesthat they need for existing illnesses andconditions. But I was also comforted by the factthat I know our care and health services aregearing up to help people as they arrive inBritain.strong support is provided to care providers andstaff where necessary. The same lead officers have been heavilyinvolved with the rehoming of refugees fromAfghanistan, in the recent evacuation of Afghancitizens who worked for our forces. With thehelp of local housing authorities, (including NewForest District Council) 60 families are nowsafely homed across Hampshire, their childrensettled in schools, and just under 200 others, though yet all to be found permanent homes, looked after in hotels whilst their applicationsare processed. I have absolutely no doubt, thatour officers and staff, along with residents’support, will step up again now as Britain beginsto take Ukrainian refugees. These refugees willbe of all ages and require all manner of supportand care. Hampshire is already on standby toassist with this effort. As the Assistant Lead Member for Adult SocialCare and Public Health at the county council, I,and my Executive Member Lead, Cllr LizFairhurst, will be working with officers to makesure this procedure goes as smoothly and asquickly as possible. I have confidence that itwill because I know our council staff areamazingly resourceful and dedicated to helpingothers in need. I just wished to offer my thanksto every one of them (and never forgetting thehealth staff in the NHS and private sectors) forwhat they have already been doing, and whatthey will now continue to do, in the mostchallenging of circumstances.Hampshire County Council, and I wish to sing itspraises here, is fortunate to be blessed withsuperb adult social care, children’s services andpublic health lead officers. I saw how they andtheir teams quickly stepped up to the plate todeal with the track and trace system (we ran If you wish to help support Ukrainian refugees, one of the most efficient systems in the country Hampshire has provided this guide as to how toat the height of the pandemic) and the logistics best do that: hants.gov.uk/ukraine This pagearound the vaccination roll out.
