SIDE NOTE
FROM THE
CHIEF EDITOR
Welcome to our very second edition of our digimag, after a very
successful first edition, we back with more on women in sport content.
On Friday, 25 March 2022, Futballing Girls hosted the 2nd edition of the
Gauteng Women in Sports Awards, in partnership with Vision View TV
at the Anew Parktonian Hotel. This has been a very emotional journey
for me personally, with so many lessons, the biggest lesson being,
always stand up for what you believe in, even if it means standing
alone. I think that is such an important lesson for women in sport, we
find ourselves standing alone so many times, not because we are wrong,
but because there is so much that goes into trying to convince us, we
don't belong or dont deserve what we work for and believe in. One day
I will write a book on how I had to fight to hold onto something I built
from nothing because someone felt they had a right to snatch it from
me and bully me into silence about it,I guess its not unique to me as so
many woman in sport have so many similar stories to tell.
I really would like to dedicate this months edition to all the nominees,
finalists and winners of the Futballing Girls Women in Sports Awards,
your achievements, community development programmes a nd
initiatives, really go a long way in keeping the brand of women in sport
alive in communities and keeping young girls in sport. It takes
concerted efforts from each and everyone of us, for us to get to the
point where we can onde day celebrate equality for women in sport.

SIMONÉ
KRUGER
Tshwane & Gauteng Sports Women in
Awards Sportswoman Of The Year with a
Disability & Gauteng Sports Awards Rising
Star who is also a World Record Holder ,
Simoné was born in Pretoria and hails from a family of four, her parents, sister and herself.
She attended grade R year in Maragon Olympus and completed her primary school years in the same school.
She commenced grade 8 at Hoërskool Garsfontein and is currently in grade 11.
Simone looks back at her childhood as very exciting but also filled with various challenges. She enjoyed
participating in all kinds of sport and really excelled in most of them, her sporting interests included Hockey,
Netball, Cross country, Swimming and Athletics. However, Athletics has been her favourite as she won most
events in discus and shot put against abled bodied athletes and this gave also gave her a lot of confidence.
Her challenges were mostly the rehabilitation processing therapy she had to endure in order to try and t
repair all the damage caused by the stroke during her mom's pregnancy. Her therapy included instruments
that permanently shocked her, physio therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy.
"My childhood, apart from the rehabilitation, was normal to me and included all kinds of fun stuff with friends
and family" says Simoné
When asked to describe her ParaIympic experience, Simoné had this to say,
"I think the first time I broke the world record in Stellenbosch at the SASAPD National Champs in 2019 was
most probably the most exciting. The moment it happened I actually had a headache. The second time that I
broke the record was at the World Para Athletics Seniors in Dubai. Due to the enormity of the event, I enjoyed
breaking the record and was very excited."
"My experience of the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021 was an absolute amazing life changing one. The complete 3
weeks was just such a blessing and enjoyable time. From the village, practicing, the Japanese people, the
beautiful country, the new friends and participating in the green and gold, was an event that I will remember
forever. I grew so much as a person and gained so much experience that will only make me a better person
and also a stronger competitor. I am so grateful to have this experience in my life at the young age of 16 years.
The strong bonds that you build with various SA Team members is really special. I am always eager to make as
many international friends as possible and in Tokyo it was no difference."
"The Competition day was obviously not what we had planned. The enormity of all the rain with lots of water
in the sectors and the conditions changing from extremely humid and hot to ice cold made the evening very
difficult. We prepared for speed and could thus not execute the technique as planned. I had to remove my
discus shoes and wear Tekkies due to the conditions and this made me extremely slow. Although it did not go
as planned the competition day was still an extremely exciting and joyful experience. To be able to compete
on the world biggest stage is definitely an honor not to be taken for granted. I really appreciate been selected
by SASAPD and SASCOC and got the opportunity to represent my country.
I brought back such beautiful memories from Japan and shared it with such excitement with my family and
friends."

"To manage my school work
and my sport career is one of
huge discipline. As a disabled
athlete I must go to bed very
early at night which means I
must use my time very
productively."
"To manage my school work and my sport career is one of huge discipline. As a disabled athlete I must go to
bed very early at night which means I must use my time very productively. My days are always very full and
busy so I must use every second." Simoné tells us. She has to put in a lot of hours in trainng in order for her
to be able to compete at the highest level. With that in mind she has to try equally balance her school work as
well, as she holds that of equal importance.
She is most proud of her two huge wins at the World Junior Paralympic Championships, where she received
maximum points in both events and also received the most points of any girl during that competition.
Second most proud of is her silver medal at the age of 14 at the World Senior Paralympic Championships,
which is the same competition that she broke the World F38 Discus record. To be able to do this at such a
big event was just so exciting for me and even more rewarding.
Her third highlight definitely was her complete experience at the Paralympic games where she enjoyed every
moment of the games and had lots of fun in the process.
She loves I reading lots and lots of books as her ay of switching off and taking time out to herself. and reflects
how reading kept her sane during the COVID season.
She also enjoys spending quality time with friends and family by watching movies together or just having a
good day with friends brings her so much joy in her life.
Thirdly she enjoys spending some quiet time with Christ and to learn and grow in His presence.
Simoné says the best advise she can give to young girls wanting to follow in her footsteps is: "Do your best
and GOD will do the rest. You can really achieve anything if you set your mind to it and work very hard.
I had to come out of a massive setback and prove that I can be a good abled and disabled athlete. Do not let
any discouragement or negativity be the reason why you stop achieving your dreams and setting goals.
Surround yourself with positive people that have your interests at heart. Look for them, they are everywhere.
One very important point is to trust your coach and believe in the process up to the end."

that your customers know about you and where to find you digitally.
How do you become digitally visible?
In order to increase your digital visibility or become digitally visible, there are
several options available.
Check which social media platforms your target group is represented on work
on optimising your profile on those social media platforms You can do this
by having professional that best describe your positioning, your service
offering and your brand.
It is very important to develop a marketing strategy which you can implement
step by step.
If you know your target group/ audience, create a schedule based on the
target audience information on relevant topics in order to get organic reach.
You can achieve faster result by using paid advertising. In order to use paid
advertising you must know your target audience very well, this way you will
be able to create suitable text, image or video to convey your message to
your target audience and also appeal to them.
Other ways to gain digital visibility and reach include interviews, website, blog,
podcast and YouTube content creation and publication.

World Tennis No 1, Ashleigh Barty retires World No. 1
Ash Barty shocked the world on Tuesday, 23 March 2022 when she announced via
Instagram that she was retiring at the age 25.
The three-time Grand Slam winner just won Wimbledon last summer and the Australian
Open in January. She seemed to be on top of her game in her nearly 12-year career.
Barty says she wants to pursue her dreams outside of tennis. She was able to complete
her dreams in tennis, so it was time for her to move on, even at such a young age.
She says she has been thinking about retirement for a long time,” Barty said. “I’ve had a
lot of incredible moments in my career that have been pivotal moments. Wimbledon last
year changed a lot for me as a person and me as an athlete when you work so hard your
whole life for one goal.
“To be able to win Wimbledon, which was my dream, the one true dream that I wanted in
tennis, that really changed my perspective. I just had that gut feeling after Wimbledon
and had spoken to my team quite a lot about it.”
