SIDE NOTE
FROM THE
CHIEF EDITOR
All of us at Futballing Girls NPO and Spotlight On Women in
Sport digimag pray you had a blessed and safe Easter weekend.
Our prayers go out to all the flood victims of the devastating KZN
floods.
We have seen an increase in sporting events as well as an
increase of spectators back in stadiums, which has been quite
excellent. It's so good to see our athletes doing what they do best
and thriving. In the past month we have seen World, African and
South African records being shattered, the FIH 2021 Womens
Junior World Cup on South African soil for the first time ever and
so many more sporting events.
April and May is definitely graduation season, and for the first
time since 2019, there has been an increase in live graduation
ceremonies, as much as there is a deep appreciation for the
virtual ceremonies, in respective of the covid 19 pandemic,
nothing really beats the thrill of walking across the stage and
being conferred. Congratulations to all the graduands, who are
proving yet again that hard work, dedication, motivation,
determnation and commitment definitely pays off.

MPUMI
MANYISI
2021 Gauteng Women in Sports
Awards and Gauteng Sports Awards
Sports Journalist Of The Year
Mpumi Manyisi is a young woman from Jabavu South of Johannesburg, She comes from a very sport
loving family of five, her parents , and her two brothers. Her brothers were very much into sports
growing up, one enjoyed cricket and the other followed football a lot and she feels their involvement
in sport is where her passion for sports developed. She attended Amsai Comprehensible School and
wrapped up her College life at Boston Media House in Benmore where she studied Media Practices,
majoring in Journalism.
Initially Mpumi wanted to pursue on air radio presenting, however opportunities within that space
were limited and hard to come by. However, opportunity presented itself in the form of the 2010 Jozi
FM campaign. The campaign was aimed at finding a Sports Presenter to bolster their team ahead of
the 2010 World Cup, and Mpumi grabbed the opportunity, signed up to audition amongst many
young hopefuls who showed up on the day. She was so excited when she made the selection, and
thus began her Sports Journalism career. After a few years she decided to study full time and had to
chose between working or studying and she chose studying in pursuit of a formal qualification at
Boston Media House, which she achieved in record time in 2014. Mpumi is really grateful to her
parents who sacrificed from the little they earned to make her achieving a formal qualification a
reality.
Mpumi, says this about juggling different roles, "The Journalism industry requires balance,
opportunities in the space are many, which allows you to do more than one job within the space. I’m
a Content Creator, Content Producer and a Presenter. I use almost the same system to package
material for each line of work, it all requires research, having reliable sources, and continuously
growing your knowledge in each subject matter. And that’s how I get to juggle between my different
hats."
Every industry has its won challenges, and she has faced many challenges in the Journalism industry,
The space is male dominated, and women we have to work twice as hard to prove their worth in it's
also a very cut throat and very fragile industry. Most people on social media think they can easily do
what journalists do and become journalists overnight, as long as they have access to internet. This
puts additional pressure on journalists to continuously apply themselves in the most diligent, unique
and informative way to set themselves apart. She feels that's how she overcomes her challenges,
through research, diligence and staying on the course but also remembering why she started.

"You have to be driven by
passion to follow in my
footsteps. Young ladies who
want to get into the sports
Journalism space need to be
aware that it’s not always glitz
and glam"
In her 6 years in the industry as a Professional Sports Journalist and Content Producer she has
managed to bag five awards consecutively.
2020 Johannesburg Women in Sports Award (Journalist of the year)
2021 Johannesburg Women in Sports Awards (Journalist of the year)
2021 Gauteng Women in Sports Awards (Journalist of the year)
2021 Gauteng Sports Awards (Journalist of the year)
2021 Johannesburg Sport Confederation women in sports awards (Journalist of the year)
"I’m very proud of these awards, having won them as a Community Media Journalist, this means
there’s something we’re doing right as community media, even though we’re not mainstream,
and there’s so much we can offer through authentic local content. I’m also very proud to have
had the opportunity to MC two of the Futballing Girls Awards ceremonies last year and early
this year. Becoming the first woman to host an E-sport event at the Soweto Theatre was both
groundbreaking and a sign that my career is moving in the right direction" stated Mpumi.
When asked what is her favourite pastime, she answered, "I enjoy traveling and spending
intimate time with close friend and family, I enjoy experiencing different provinces, and have
been to some neighbouring countries as well. Can’t wait to have just enough money to
experience other parts of the world. And that’s how I get to escape from work, take time off
and reboot to connect with myself."
On her advise to young women who would like to follow in her footsteps. Mpumi says, that
young women must be driven by passion to follow in her footsteps. Young ladies who want to
get into the sports Journalism space need to be aware that it’s not always glitz and glam, there
is hard work, sleepless nights and early mornings at play. One has to be consistent and
consistently work at improving their craft, and cannot afford to drop the ball. Young women
need to understand that they are only as good as their last offering. She also quips that they
must enjoy what they do and it should never feel like a burden.

THE
BUSINESS OF
SPORT
Applying for grant funding is very
competitive and professional in
its approach as the funding
landscape is very different today.
Funding application submissions require a project plan/business plan to be
submitted in conjunction with the application forms.
What are the key principles of successful project/business plan writing?
Put your audience first - make sure you speak to the funders needs and you are
able to capture the funders attention.
Plan must cover the main points which speak to the funders objectives - don’t
put in unnecessary information.
Sell but do not oversell - concentrate on achievable deliverables, and not over
promise
Don’t downplay your challenges - rather speak of ways of having to deal with
the challenges and how funding will help with eradication or alleviating
challenges.
Plan for long and short term - your plan should speak of the long and short
term goals of the organisation and how these can be achieved as well as how can
success of these goals be measured as well.
Your plan must be clear and concise and comprise of the following elements:
Executive summary - a brief introduction of your organisation, highlights
and achievements, key objectives, vision and mission
Project objectives - what need/ concern or opportunity does the project aim
to address and how. How will the community benefit from the project and
where will the project be implemented.
Implementation plan - sub objectives of the project, how it will be
implemented (main activities and time frames) as well as implementation
costs.

THE
BUSINESS OF

Applying for grant funding is very
competitive and professional in
its approach as the funding
landscape is very different today.
Capacity to implement project - human resources available, what expertise
do they possess to implement projects
Job creation - how will this project assist in job creation or addressing
unemployment.
Monitoring and evaluation of the project - how will success of the project
be measured, what is the frequency of the monitoring process and what
evidence will be used.
Organisational and staff development - any plans on developing staff and
the organisation.
Project and organisational sustainability - how will the projects and
organisation be sustained moving forward, what plans are in place to ensure
sustainability.
Detailed Budget demonstrating Income and Expenditure.
It is very important to understand the funders motivation and how to
meet their objectives.
Most funding organisations set out specific objectives or targets and look
for organisations who will meet those objectives or targets.
It is also imperative that plans demonstrate how the funded projects will
address socio-economic factors within communities and how these
projects will benefit the community.
The project must also indicate as to how this will create a positive
outcome and create sustainability within communities.
