CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF OFFICE MOVING
EXCELLENCE
This year, the Commercial Moving Group (C.M.G.) of the British
Association of Removers (B.A.R.), is celebrating 30 years of offering high
class commercial moving services throughout the United Kingdom and
mainland Europe. It came into being on the 30th of January 1990, at a
meeting in London of what was considered to be the largest and best
commercial movers in the UK, when a steering committee was formed,
consisting of very experienced removers in their own right - Aubrey
Appleton (Bullens), Ken Beer (GBN), Simon Darvall (Business Moves
Group), Tony Factor (Exclusive) And Tony Sullivan (Harrow Green)
This committee was charged with determining Group rules, structure, aims,
and objectives, and led to the formation of a Council, which held its first
meeting in January of 1991, under the chairmanship of Ken Beer.
The Group quickly became the recognised,
premier brand within the office moving
industry, and it has remained in that place
ever since, its members adapting over
time to an ever changing and developing
marketplace. During those 30 years, it
brought into being, and promoted, a
Commercial Mover of the Year Competition
for its Members, which had the added
benefit of continually raising standards in the
industry. In 2008, the Group assisted in the
creation of an externally validated Standard
for commercial moving, mandatory for every
Member, which evolved 2 years later into
a British Standard BS 8522 - now widely
recognised as an essential requirement
by commercial service users in Tender
documentation.
The days of just moving masses of office
furniture have been replaced with working
alongside system furniture businesses,
providing move management skills, computer
and server relocations, for all types of
businesses in both the public and private
Sectors, including, for example, complete
Library, University, and Hospital moves. With
this changing environment, and the move to
flexible workspace, came the challenge of
dealing with redundant furniture in the most
environmentally friendly way, and this is now
commonplace following a large commercial
relocation and a service the CMG members
have adapted to. The essential requirement
of the Group’s members being to seek out
opportunities to re-use, revive, and recycle,
supplying recognised charities, schools and
colleges, even to the extent of moving such
items overseas where the need is great,
especially in developing nations. Some Group
members have invested in remanufacturing
machines to put new life into old furniture,
with the final solution to break up the furniture
for recycling, with this, furniture is stripped,
and segregated into different component
parts, providing the audit trail most clients
require, the ambition of all CMG members
being to work toward zero landfill.
The Group is constantly looking for ways
to improve its service offering in the light
of requirements by its Clients coupled with
legislative imperatives, and has the ambition
to be the only port of call in its marketplace
for cost effective, quality moves. Its growing
membership currently consists of 52
Companies, countrywide, all offering the
full range of Office and Commercial moving

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the Spring Journal, as usual jam-packed with articles,
information and our associate’s news.
This quarter we welcome The Chair Clinic, Commercial
Moving Group (CMG) and Crown Workspace into our
membership troupe.
We are aware that self-service is becoming even more
popular, especially as people tend to research beyond
their normal working day. Alongside our personal
advisory service – CFAS has launched a new service
in partnership with CMG and British Association of
Removers BAR whereby visitors to the CFAS website
can now search for their local BS8522 certified remover/
installer. This is a great tool, especially for those who need
a certified installer for the tenders they are working on. If
there are additional search facilities that will be beneficial
to you, please do get in touch and let us know.
There are some great articles in this Planet Health
themed journal, including manufacturing considerations.
Alongside this we have been talking to some members
about how they design a new product. Taking
into consideration many factors including: market
demand, user expectations and standards (such as
BS 8887-220:2010 Design for manufacture, assembly,
disassembly and end-of-life processing MADE). A lot
of new sit/stand desking not only provides ergonomics
benefits but also has manufacturing considerations such
as sustainable manufacturing environment, percentage
of recycled materials, the recyclability of end of life,
and also the packaging required. These are all now
critical decisions which affect our planets health. It
is enlightening to know that something good for our
workplace health is also good for our planet health.
Some members are already in the planning and
organising stages for Clerkenwell Design Week. The
months will fly by and the industry event of the year will
soon be upon us. Yes, all this flooding, storm damage
and on/off snow warnings will be long forgotten as
we tread the sunny Clerkenwell pavements enjoying
CDW20. CFAS are once again pleased to be media
partners, and our popular heavily subscribed CDW
journal has already started taking bookings. Remember
this is not only posted out the week before CDW, but
is available as an online version, plus, is available at the
CDW official Press Office – fantastic exposure for your
business, your products and your services, whether you
are participating or not.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been slimmed
down to Social Responsibility (SR) as think tanks
recognised that the smaller organisations were slow
at recognising, they also have an obligation.
In this journals theme of Planet
Health, we can read about some
of our members achievements in
being environmentally accountable,
showing that sustainability is not a
tick box exercise for them, but a real
consideration on reducing impact.
The article about Plastic Whale is
enlightening, a social enterprise with
a mission to have plastic free waters.
By showing that economic value can
be created from plastic waste.
With the motto: We collect. We
create. We educate. CFAS have been
following Plastic Whale social media
for a while and it’s doing amazing
strides in raising awareness.
It is shocking to read that there are
over 500 landfill sites in the UK.
Sites where waste is disposed of by
burying it in the ground. Literally
‘filling up the land’. It is only when you
sit back and think about this literal
meaning that the need for sustainable
practices really hits home.

I’m one of the ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, the term
workaholic was created to describe my generation.
Our work ethic was measured in hours worked with
less importance placed on productivity. We sat all day,
sedentary within our lilac walls, color theory said it
would increase concentration and calm. We started
work at 8:30 precisely, one tea break at 11:00, an hour for
lunch and the badge of honor went to the person turning
the lights out as they left the building last – how things
have changed and for the better.
As a designer of office furniture products
and interiors I thrive on change. New
ideas and theories, new ways of working,
changes in technology, changes in
society, changes in the importance the
employer is now placing on the health
and wellbeing of their staff. This has a
major impact on the products we use
and the interiors we work from. Further
evidence of a more holistic approach to
our work environment is the growing
adoption of the WELL standard.
The WELL Building Standard is
a performance-based system for
measuring, certifying and monitoring
features of the built environment that
impact human health and wellbeing.
WELL was originated in the U.S.A and
is now being adopted throughout the
world.
Its scope is comprehensive and here we
give an overview of some of the product
and interior design related themes.
• Integrating aesthetically pleasing
elements into a space can help
building occupants derive a measure
of comfort or joy from their
surroundings. The incorporation
of design elements and artwork
to a space can create a calming
environment able to improve
occupant mood.
• Biophilia, or the idea that humans
have an affinity towards the natural
world, is an emerging field that
aims to address our psychological
need to be around life and life-like
processes. The standard calls for
a biophilia plan to be developed
that includes a description of how
the project incorporates natures
patterns throughout the design.
• Seating and spatial layouts should be
organised into separate workplace
zones and provide differing degrees
of sensory engagement.
Designated quiet space provides focus,
contemplation and relaxation, and
include plant wall and/or floor plantings
along with integration of audio with
nature sounds. The space should be
flexible offering a variety of seating
arrangements.
Collaboration zones are provided as
enclosed or semi-enclosed rooms with
provision for visual vertical surface
area for communicating ideas and
teleconferencing. Acoustic performance
standards are set out for these spaces.
• To minimize clutter and maintain
a comfortable, well-organized
environment, minimal storage
requirements are addressed through
the provision of a workstation
pedestal or a personal locker for
each regular occupant.
• Sit stand workstations should be
available to 60% of office staff along
with fixed sitting and standing work
surfaces. Treadmill and bicycle
solutions should make up 5% of
workstations.
This article skips across just a few topics
from the WELL standard, the full
standard is worth further examination
due to its ambitious scope that impacts
on our industry and the brighter work
future it champions.
Back in the 80’s, whilst working for
Project Office Furniture, I read an article
that suggested we would work beyond
retirement age and that the workplace
would need to accommodate an aging
workforce. Simple things like the
luminosity of lighting would increase to
compensate for deterioration in eyesight.
How right that article was, although
bespectacled, I’m no longer the one
turning out the lights and leaving the
building last.

UNDERGROUND
UPDATE
In our Planet Health journal last year,
CFAS investigated an innovative
food manufacturer called Growing
Underground. We participated in a
‘farm tour’ they held and wrote an
article about our experience, being in
awe at what they had achieved and
impressed at their ongoing goals and
targets. Today we hear from Growing
Underground on the progress they
have been making and even further
innovations they have introduced:
Growing Underground
At Growing Underground, we sustainably
grow mouth-wateringly fresh micro
greens and salad leaves 33 metres
below the busy streets of Clapham.
Using the latest hydroponic systems and
LED technology, our crops are grown
year-round in the perfect, pesticidefree
environment that these forgotten
tunnels provide. Thanks to a controlled
environment, each tiny leaf tastes as
amazing as the last. Our greens are
unaffected by the weather and seasonal
changes, and thanks to our prime
location, we reduce the need to import
crops and drastically reduce the food
miles for retailers and consumers.
We have been very busy planning and
continuing to expand our farm. Quite
a few events have occurred where we
have had the opportunity to promote
sustainable farming and encourage
other producers to utilise ‘alternative’
methods to grow tasty, nutritious food:
» May 2019: we were delighted to
announce our launch into Tesco
stores across the nation. This was
quite a milestone as we started
supplying the UKs largest retailer
with our ‘Urban Mix’ in collaboration
with salad kings Fresh and Naked.
» Summer 2019: during the Summer
our cofounder Steve was on a
panel with Adam Henson at BBC
Countryfile Live
» September 2019: Olivia, our
Business Development Director
took part in the AllBright
sustainable food all women panel

Sustainable products:
what does this mean for furniture
manufacturers?
What comes to mind when you think of ‘sustainability’? The
definition has evolved to encompass much more than postconsumer
recycling and reducing carbon footprints. Where some
sustainability practices have been promoted as USPs in the past,
these are now becoming ‘standard’ and ‘expected’ by customers.

There are plenty of materials that can be recycled to
create functional and design-led products, such as
plastic from the sea. There is a flood of single-use plastic
taking over our waters. More than 80% of all the waste
in the ocean is plastic and more than 8 billion kilos is
dumped into our oceans annually. There are innovative
manufacturers, investing in research and product
development to find solutions to the problem that
we like to call ‘Plastic Soup’, but this all takes
time.
Option A is to focus on producing
products that are 100% recyclable. This
is a great way to reduce the amount
of waste you are contributing to the
problem. However, we are assuming
that the consumer will dispose of these
products responsibly, thus risking our
efforts. The components often need to
be separated and recycled in a variety of
ways, which is also notoriously costly.
Option B is to produce furniture from recycled
materials. This method addresses the problem by
helping to clear the land and waters of waste. The ideal
solution would be to have a product that encompasses
both option A and B. However, there are limitations
regarding how many times some of these materials can
be recycled.
There are alternative solutions, such as focusing on
educating customers. There is plenty of information
that offers contradictory advise. Taking control of this
information by helping customers to understand their

options and the impact of their decisions, will positively
impact your sustainability targets.
The responsibility also lies with the manufacturers to
be transparent; publishing sustainability agendas, plans
for supporting the destruction of ‘Plastic Soup’ and the
barriers they face. Your customers will have more trust
in your brand as a result.
What about product quality and timeless
design? There’s also the argument that
simply producing high quality furniture,
increasing the longevity of the product,
is enough to address the issue. Products
that have a strong design and stand
the test of time may never need to be
thrown away or recycled.
The key point here is that we’re in this
together. Sustainability should be less about
maximising profit and more about corporate
social responsibility. If we don’t take responsibility as
manufacturers to educate and change our outlook on
sustainability, there will be much wider consequences
than simply being a contributor to the problem.

How UK manufacturers can fly

MOVING
THE WORKFORCE
TOWARDS SIT-STAND SOLUTIONS
As wellness in the workplace gains momentum, it seems
that health benefits of standing up whilst working is being
recognized by both employers and employees.
People are now more likely to accept that sitting for
extended periods without moving, may increase the
risk of the onset of cardio vascular diseases, obesity,
diabetes and general lack of fitness.
Rapid technology advances, changing the way we
work, is also pushing people into ever more sedentary
life styles. Long hours, often in seated postures can not
only affect our health and general well-being, but also
our productivity and efficiency in the workplace.
This does not mean, however, that we should switch
from prolonged sitting to prolonged standing. Neither
is good - the human body is not designed for static
postures. Movement is the key for maintaining a healthy
body, hence alternating between sitting and standing is
the answer. There is no exact defined time periods of
sitting versus standing. It depends on the individual and
what they are doing; however as a general rule 10 to 15
minutes of standing for every hour or so of being seated
seems to be beneficial.
Levent Çaglar, Chief Ergonomist at FIRA, has been
warning about the dangers of prolonged sitting at
workplaces, as well as highlighting how rapid changes
in technology have pushed people to more sedentary
lifestyles in schools, offices and at home.
Over the past few years he has been advocating the
use of standing work surfaces in offices and schools
and has been at the forefront of getting people to
alternate between sitting and standing while they work.
The furniture industry has been responding by
providing new and innovative sit/stand solutions.
These desks are very popular in Scandinavia, where

However there are regulations to be aware of as regards sit/
stand desks. In July 2017 a new guide to the EU Machinery
Directive was published – Guide to the Application of the
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, Edition 2.1. This new
guidance was particularly clear in identifying the relationship
with powered office furniture products such as sit/stand
desking and other electrically powered office furniture falling
within the scope of the Directive. As such the following
standards and regulations apply to sit/stand desks:
Low voltage directive (LVD) (2014/35/EU)
• BS EN 60204-1:2018. Safety of machinery. Electrical
equipment of machines. General requirements
• BS EN 60335-1:2012+A13:2017. Household and similar
electrical appliances. Safety. General requirements
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) Directive 2014/30/EU
• BS EN 61000-6-1:2007. Electromagnetic compatibility
(EMC). Generic standards. Immunity for residential,
commercial and light-industrial environments
• BS EN IEC 61000-3-2:2019. Electromagnetic
compatibility (EMC). Limits. Limits for harmonic current
emissions (equipment input current ≤16 A per phase)
• BS EN 61000-6-3:2007+A1:2011. Electromagnetic
compatibility (EMC). Generic standards. Emission
standard for residential, commercial and light-industrial
environments
Directive 2006/42/EC - new machinery directive
it’s been estimated by Get Britain Standing that over
90% of office workers enjoy the health and engagement
benefits of being able to easily switch between sitting
and standing.
Over recent years, as the desks have grown in
popularity, the price point for a more basic desk has
dropped. There are now many affordable sit/stand
desks, not only electrically operated, but also operated
by various mechanical mechanisms, even gas assisted
fast crank mechanisms.
It is not just furniture manufacturers who are finding
innovative solutions to the sit/stand issue. Retro-fit desk
top sit/stand solutions such as combined keyboard/
monitor arms are now available that fit on a standard,
fixed height, desk, allowing the user to move easily from
sitting to standing. With such accessories, it is now
possible to transform existing fixed height desks into sit/
stand workstations very quickly and economically.

BATA’S ACCESS
TO WORK SEMINAR
On Wednesday 4 th March CFAS attended a seminar organized by BATA
(British Assistive Technology Association) entitled Access to Work.
Hosted by ATOS in their High Holborn office, this seminar was aimed at
raising awareness of the Government funded Access to Work scheme, with
talks, workshops and panel discussions it proved to be an interesting and
insightful morning.
CFAS attended as we are keen to find out more
about how we can encourage diversity and inclusion
in the workplace, offering our members and readers
information and advice how they can reach out.
BATA is a not-for-profit membership organisation,
where the members develop, resell and provide
service for Assistive Technology (AT). This
encompasses hardware, software, accessories and
furniture which enables users of all abilities to work,
study and communicate effectively. AT supports
people with disabilities, hidden disabilities and complex
conditions. BATA have a special interest group whose
purpose is to promote and encourage employers
to welcome people with disabilities. Opening up
discussion, raising awareness of the funding available
and the equipment which assists and supports.
The seminar is one of many activities planned, and
if the others are as well thought out and organised
as this one, their goal is going to be easily achieved.
Access to Work (AtW) is government funding provided
to employees to help them in the workplace. In the
financial year 2017/8 over 36,000 people benefitted
from this scheme with costs covered by the
Government of over £110m. AtW provides a variety of
support including:
Taxis to work for those who can’t use
public transport
Special equipment or adaptations
A support worker or job coach to help in
the workplace
A communicator at a job interview or in
the workplace
British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter for
people with hearing loss
Mental Health Support Service (MHSS) for
people experiencing difficulties with their
wellbeing
Disability awareness training for work
colleague
The cost of moving equipment following a
change in location or job
After an introduction by Noel Duffy, the chair
of BATA’s Special Interest Group, there was an
overview of AtW by Strategy Policy Advisors,
Crystal Forrester and Joy Adeleye. Amongst
the statistics and interesting information, they
advised the room of some of the initiatives the
Government are instigating to raise awareness,
acknowledging that although growing, AtW was
not commonly known by people with disabilities
nor employers. Great to hear the Government
are putting time and effort behind supporting
more people and alerting more employers to the
funding available.
There were presentations from Dyslexia
Association and case studies of Access to
Work: Aj Ahmed, blind from birth, made us laugh
throughout with his lively sense of humour and
astute clarity in the path he has taken with and
without the support of AtW. Plus, Clive Gilbert
from Policy Connect explained his personal
case, with the physical disability cerebral palsy,
Clive’s talk demonstrated the use of AT devices
with a PowerPoint presentation and AT speech
software.
Technology was at the forefront again with Neil
Milliken, ATOS sponsor, on a weblink, sharing his
screen and enabling live interaction.
Holding a workshop for attendees, panel
discussion and audience Q&A added a
fantastic mix to the morning. Passionate
recommendations providing meaningful and
example led feedback to the AtW Strategy Policy
Advisers, meant they were frantically taking notes
and nodding throughout in appreciation of the
suggestions.
Overall, CFAS gained lots of information
regarding Access to Work which we can
communicate to our members and will be putting
on our website and posting through social media.

transformed into exciting guest

Interior designers are involved earlier in projects, working with
architects and suppliers to co-ordinate fixtures, fittings and
decors that chime with other elements of guest provision.
They are in a prime position to realise the client’s vision, while
