Shinguards werestandardpieces of armorworn byGreek andRoman warriors,and forall warriorssince.Some ofthe first towear “armor”on theplaying fieldas opposed tothe battlefield,werecricket players.Their padsextended fromthe foot to midthigh.In themid-1800’sFootball (Soccer)players began wearinga smaller version of the padsand while they were slow tocatch on, their protective valuewas noted and eventually,they became standard, requiredequipment for playersin many sports.The pictured guards aremade of leather with a clothor chamois lining. Aluminumwas used as the center ofconstruction of early models,providing extra strength andprotection. April 2022Word on the LakeWriters’ FestivalShuswap Association of WritersAfter more than 17 years at the Prestige Inn in SalmonArm, the Word on the Lake Writers’ festival is changinglocation.The Sorrento Centre is located in the heart of theShuswap area in British Columbia’s scenic interior – just32 km west of Salmon Arm, on the Trans-Canada Highway.Tucked away on 24 acres on Shuswap Lake, the centreprovides a peaceful site to enjoy a natural environment,with nature trails, a babbling creek, many quiet spacesand meeting areas, and the private beach is a short strollthrough the forest. So much to do when not engaged in festivalactivities.The Festival kick-off event, Café Lit, takes place April29 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, with nine guest speakers,writers, musicians and comedians.The Blue Pencil Café takes place on April 30. Participatingpresenters will be available for a 20-minute one-ononeappointment. Participating presenters are listed on theregistration form, and also indicated on each presenter’spage.This is a great opportunity to havea writing professional go over yourwork with you in an informal and relaxedsetting.Book early to avoid disappointment.Online booking closes on April10.Everyone is welcome to the festival’sGALA Saturday evening 6:45pm-10:00pm in Kekuli.
