FROM THE SLO with Dave Matthew-Jones THIS EVENING WE WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS, OFFICIALS AND PLAYING STAFF OF WYCOMBE WANDERERS TO THE ABBEY STADIUM. The Chairboys traditionally play in quartered shirts of navy (Oxford blue) and pale blue (Cambridge blue). Is the kit design due to a connection between the two university cities or was the design just a coincidence? Pedal to the Pitch is an organisation raising awareness and the encouragement of football supporters cycling to matches. On the 9th April before the Morecambe, they are organising a ride for supporters to be a part of in Cambridge. The group encourages fans to walk and wheel. They want to reduce the environmental impact that football fans have on local communities around stadia, improve air quality at football games and minimise the impact that football has on the planet. They organise run led rides and walks, campaign for sustainable practice and bring together fans with similar ideas. See below for details if you would like to take part. There are already cycle racks being used at the Abbey Stadium situated at the front of the ground, behind the Habbin North Stand and Main Stand. Following the recent opening of the Chisholm Trail coming right by the Abbey Stadium, it puts some Cambridge United supporters in a unique position of not having to use cars to get to and from matches. They start at Cambridge Market Square at 1:30pm on a Saturday home Matchday and leave at 1:45pm. They meet the next group at Cambridge Station at 2pm before arriving at the Abbey at 2:15pm. They journey length is 5.5km and takes around 30 minutes in total. Supporters are welcome to bring their own bicycle, or Pedal to the Pitch can provide a bike for you to use during the ride for free. All are welcome, however any under 18’s will need to be accompanied by an adult and complete a short cycle skills test prior to the event. Finally, we have the Offside Trust with us as guests of the Club today and I would like to personally welcome Alan and the team and thank them for sharing their stories and for continuing to speak out and raise awareness about abuse within football. I like to think that the game has changed in that respect over the years but we mustn’t be complacent.
