Head Coach
Mark Bonner
Firstly, I’d like to welcome Gareth Ainsworth, his staff and players to
The Abbey for today’s Sky Bet League One tie.
Tonight starts the beginning
of a two game week at The
Abbey against teams with big
targets and involved in pressure
situations.
It is very rare that two teams play
both their fixtures so close to
each other as late in the season as
ourselves and Wycombe have. Due
to the cancellation of the game
over Christmas and the FA Cup run,
both fixtures had to be moved to
Tuesday evenings.
A few weeks ago we had a difficult
night at Adams Park as Wycombe
played with a top desire to be on
the winning side and found enough
key situations in the game to take
and then extend their lead.
We will have to be better tonight
than we were last time as the
visitors come in to the game not
only in good form, but with a good
defensive and away record behind
them. Having come so close to
survival in the Championship last
season, they will be determined
to get back there and this game
becomes a must win for them.
We will need to be a strong team
tonight to be competitive.
Our own results, certainly the
last two away ones have been
very favourable. Saturday’s win at
Ipswich felt special and is without
doubt one of the highlights of
the season. From the moment we
arrived to the stadium it felt like a
big day - a cup like atmosphere.
The stadium, support and
atmosphere were all set. The pitch
was exceptional and the opposition
were on great form, knowing they
needed a win to keep their playoff
chase alive. We managed to
deliver a strong performance, were
deserving of the lead and saw the
game through for another big three
points.
I have no doubt that Ipswich will be
serious contenders next season and
with the investment they have, their
squad and their management team,
I would be very surprised if they
don’t take one of the automatic
spots next year.
As for us, the enjoyment of the
weekend turns to anticipation
for today. Can we get closer to
Wycombe than last time? Can we
keep driving home performances
and building our mentality? Can
we finish well? Have we more wins
in us? All questions I am looking
forward to seeing answered in the
final 4 weeks.
Enjoy the game.
Chief Executive Officer
ian mather
Welcome to all who have made the trip from Buckinghamshire for our
rearranged fixture. The Wanderers are on an unbeaten six game run, which
started with our visit to Adams Park on 1 March. Though, as we know, all
runs have to come to an end as shown on Saturday at Portman Road…
Today we are hosts to an incredibly important
charity – The Offside Trust. The Trust is led
by Alan Arber, a former Norwich City player.
Last November I had the absolute privilege to
be present at a training session in which Alan
explained, based on his personal experience,
the importance of Safeguarding for children and
young people in any situation and particularly
in sport.
The Trust has three key aims:
To raise awareness of the importance of
safeguarding across all sports at all levels
To provide survivors with advice guidance and
resources to aid the healing journey
To campaign for legal and regulatory changes to
improve safeguarding in sport
Please read Alan’s story which can be read on the
next page. You will be moved. Then find ways
to engage with the Trust. If you run a sports club
invite them to do some training. If you can, make a
donation.
As a club we take Safeguarding very seriously and
we are happy to give Alan and his team all the
support and encouragement that we can.
On a different note I am sad to say that we have
a few key, and much admired, members of our
football staff leaving us for pastures new.
Matt Walker, Head of Sports Science and Education
(you can spot him in the dugout as he always wears
shorts whatever the weather) is leaving to take on
a performance role at Manchester United working
with their under 23 players. Matt is an institution at
this club and has worked through some very hard
times. We owe him a lot. It is a brilliant move for
him – and Manchester United.
Tom Pell, our Academy Manager is leaving to take
on the same role at another club which have a
Category 2 Academy, soon to be a Category 1. Like
Matt, he has been at this club for years and has
made a huge contribution to our success.
Kit Brunswick, Assistant Academy Manager – is off
to undertake a safeguarding role at an E sports
company. Kit has done great work in relation to
safeguarding here, and much more besides.
It is always sad when highly valued staff members
move on but we have to be pleased for them as
they develop their careers in exciting ways. All leave
with our very best wishes and no doubt a lifelong
interest in The U’s. We look forward to seeing them
back at the Abbey from time to time and I have
already suggested to Matt that he might like to
bring his new team to play here!
The recruitment process is now underway for all
roles and details are on our website Vacancies page.
Back to tonight. Our season is far from done. We
aim to finish as high as we possibly can. It will be
another tough one – and that is the fun of League 1.
Enjoy the game.
My Story
alan arber
Abuse in sport has become increasingly under the spotlight, especially in
football. Since that day a year ago when some very high-profile players
told their very distressing stories live on the Victoria Derbyshire, an
organisation called The Offside Trust was born.
All of their work has been done
with no funding from The Football
Association and a very minimal
amount from the PFA. Their help
has given me the strength to deal
with what happened to me when I
was child.
As a youngster I wanted nothing
more than to watch football, play
football and be a professional
footballer. My uncle used to take me
to watch Luton Town from the age
of seven and at first, my relationship
with him was wonderful.
Nothing was too much trouble and
I enjoyed our visits to watch Luton
at home. I used to get extremely
excited at around noon awaiting my
uncle’s arrival to have a kick about in
the park before going to the game.
Unfortunately, I later found out that
there was an ulterior motive. From
the age of nine, we used to go
to coaching sessions with a team
on our way to football under the
guise of them working for Luton
Town. I was told that if I did well, I
would have a chance to become a
professional footballer.
Just as the season started and
the coaching session became
more intense, I was told that they
could help me fulfil my dreams if I
did something for them after the
games. It started with touching
parts of their anatomy but it grew
even more sinister, with members
of our team involved in sordid acts
such as rape, some of which was
photographed and filmed.
When we left the so-called house,
we were all given gifts and told
that we must never tell anyone that
these things had happened.
The older I got, the acts became
even more depraved and the
threats became even more
dreadful. I retreated into a shell
and on my return home I would
turn into an insular and exceedingly
difficult person.
Luckily once I reached the age of
twelve, my uncle left the picture
and the trips to football stopped. I
found a more local club to play for
which was well run and safe with
good coaches. It made me wonder
why my first set of coaches asked
me to do the things they did. I was
still fearful of telling my parents
so I hid the sordid things away for
many, many years.
About six years ago I was summonsed
to a meeting at a solicitor’s office in
London after my uncle had died and
left his will. I was taken to a side room
and given a letter to be read to me.
The letter detailed my uncle’s sordid
past and was his was of asking the
family for forgiveness from his crimes.
Unfortunately, it was to be announced
that he had abused a member of the
family and that he wanted forgiveness.
That person was me.
My family had no idea but as you
can imagine, it was exceptionally
harrowing for me, my mum and my
sisters. Unfortunately, I was blamed
and called a liar by most of his side
of the family meaning that I was
cast aside by members of my family.
From that moment on I became an
exceedingly difficult person to even
talk to and took to drinking excessively.
I ended up losing my wife, house and
a lot of family members. I also had to
attend two court cases to see some of
the dreadful people sentenced, which
was an extremely difficult experience.
As with all people that have suffered
any sort of abuse, I tried to take my
own life about a year ago but I have
been taking regular treatment from
counsellors and doctors to ensure I
can make the best recovery possible
from these dreadful nightmares.
I apologise if this is harrowing
reading, but it is the only way to
get the message across.
I am now the local East Anglian
Ambassador for the Offside Trust
and work with all levels of clubs
to provide workshops on abuse.
These have been brilliantly received
and our work in supporting those
in sport who have been abused is
ongoing.
Should your Association, League or
club wish to support our work, hold
a workshop, awareness day or make
a donation, please contact me via
Trust, visit www.offsidetrust.com.
Today’s Opposition
wycombe wanderers
FOUNDED: 1887 | NICKNAME: THE CHAIRBOYS | STADIUM: ADAMS PARK | LAST SEASON: 22ND (CHAMPIONSHIP)
Wycombe arrive at the
Abbey Stadium this
evening with the aim of
moving back into play-off
contention, with a win
keeping the Chairboys’
hopes of making an
instant return to the
Championship alive.
After bouncing back from a
3-2 defeat against Accrington
towards the end of February with
a win against the U’s in March,
Gareth Ainsworth’s men have
maintained an unbeaten run that
stretches over five games, prior
to their clash with Doncaster
Rovers three days ago, and will be
hoping to right the wrongs of a
winless February by moving back
into the division’s top six.
Despite controversially being
relegated to the third-tier last
season, the Chairboys have
suffered no relegation hangover,
and currently find themselves
sitting just three points outside
the top six*.
Ageing like a fine wine, Joe
Jacobson, now 35, has again
played an instrumental part in
Wycombe’s battle for promotion,
impressively contributing to seven
goals from fullback. The former
Shrewsbury Town man remained
at Adams Park over the summer
despite impressing on numerous
occasions in the Championship.
Despite enjoying the game’s share
of chances, Gareth Ainsworth’s
men were unable to break down
a stubborn Pompey defence at
Fratton Park last weekend, as
the Chairboys and Portsmouth
played out a 0-0 draw. Despite
the disappointment of dropped
points, the draw saw the
Buckinghamshire club extended
their unbeaten run to five.
The Chairboys’ rise through
the English league system
throughout the second half of the
20th century meant it took 130
years of association football for
both sides to meet in 1993 – after
being drawn to face each other in
an FA Cup second round clash at
Adams Park.
Wycombe would go on to win
that afternoon, thanks to Jason
Cousins’ second half goal, and
have since enjoyed the share of
spoils when it comes to overall
head-to-head games.
Mark Bonner’s men will be hoping
to end six-year run this afternoon,
with the U’s not recording a win
over the Chairboys since 2016.
Gareth Ainsworth’s side recorded
a comfortable win over United
just a month ago in the reverse
fixture, as Anis Mehmeti’s brace,
coupled with Gareth McCleary’s
strike ended a run of seven games
without a win for the Chairboys.
Prior to March’s clash, Paul
Lewis cancelled out Adebayo
Akinfenwa’s opener in injury time,
as the U’s salvaged an unlikely
point against the eventually
promoted Chairboy’s in 2018.
(Oxford blue) and pale
blue (Cambridge blue).
Is the kit design due to
a connection between
the two university cities
or was the design just a
coincidence?
Pedal to the Pitch is an
organisation raising awareness
and the encouragement of
football supporters cycling
to matches. On the 9th April
before the Morecambe, they are
organising a ride for supporters
to be a part of in Cambridge.
The group encourages fans to
walk and wheel. They want to
reduce the environmental impact
that football fans have on local
communities around stadia,
improve air quality at football
games and minimise the impact
that football has on the planet.
They organise run led rides and
walks, campaign for sustainable
practice and bring together fans
with similar ideas. See below for
details if you would like to take
part. There are already cycle racks
being used at the Abbey Stadium
situated at the front of the ground,
behind the Habbin North Stand
and Main Stand. Following the
recent opening of the Chisholm
Trail coming right by the Abbey
Stadium, it puts some Cambridge
United supporters in a unique
position of not having to use cars
to get to and from matches.
They start at Cambridge Market
Square at 1:30pm on a Saturday
home Matchday and leave at
1:45pm. They meet the next
group at Cambridge Station at
2pm before arriving at the Abbey
at 2:15pm. They journey length
is 5.5km and takes around 30
minutes in total.
Supporters are welcome to bring
their own bicycle, or Pedal to the
Pitch can provide a bike for you
to use during the ride for free. All
are welcome, however any under
18’s will need to be accompanied
by an adult and complete a short
cycle skills test prior to the event.
For more details and to register
ahead of this Saturday’s game
against Morecambe, simply search
‘Pedal to the Pitch Cambridge
Morecambe” into google or
follow them on Twitter at @
PedaltothePitch.
Finally, we have the Offside
Trust with us as guests of the
Club today and I would like to
personally welcome Alan and the
team and thank them for sharing
their stories and for continuing
to speak out and raise awareness
about abuse within football. I
like to think that the game has
changed in that respect over
the years but we mustn’t be
complacent.
THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BE A MEMBER OF A FANS’ ASSOCIATION, JUST AS IT IS A
GREAT TIME TO BE A U’S FAN. WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO ENJOY A STRESS FREE END
TO A MEMORABLE SEASON AND BASK IN THE GLOW OF RECOVERING OUR STADIUM
AFTER THOSE DARK DEEDS OF 2005.
Given the amazing success of the
Fans Led Review and the creation
of the Golden Share arrangement,
I can’t help but feel that fans
groups are more relevant than
ever before now that they will
have a guaranteed say in the way
their clubs are run. The legacy,
traditions and heritage of clubs
will be protected properly and
the fact that ‘little old’ Cambridge
United are the first club to
commit to a Golden Share layer of
governance is something that we
should all be very proud of.
Increasingly, we will see this
arrangement adopted and prized
by all clubs. It is long overdue.
Obviously no one knows what
the organisation will look like yet
but I hope to see CFU, CUSP, the
Supporters’ Club and all other
supporters’ groups represented.
This is a golden opportunity for us
all to work together. A United club
is a strong club.
On April 25th, CFU will be holding
their AGM in the Supporters’ Club.
This is a particularly important event
for us since it should showcase our
accountability and transparency -
values which are a vital component
of any worthwhile organisation.
Nominations for a new Fans Elected
Director and Board members will
have been received by April 3rd
and it will be interesting to see who
these might be.
We are committed to diversity
and I would like to see a wider
range of people joining us,
because they can see some value
in what we are trying to do to
assist the Community Trust in its
work and to help to meet the
needs of all Cambridge fans more
comprehensively.
Regaining ownership of our
ground should make the process of
adapting and modernising it more
viable. Listening to what fans have
to say about this is always the best
starting point.
It is hard to imagine who will
replace Dave Matthew-Jones after
seven years of sterling service but
the future looks bright for the Club
and for CFU. No doubt the AGM
will be attended by a glittering
array of celebrities. I hope that you
will be one of them.
Habbin
WHAT A MEMORABLE SEASON IT HAS
TURNED OUT TO BE. WE HAVE HELD OUR
OWN IN LEAGUE ONE AGAINST THE
ODDS AND CERTAINLY AGAINST THE
PREDICTIONS OF MANY PUNDITS.
The demolition of Cheltenham on their own pitch,
plus our home displays against Bolton, Burton and
Plymouth in particular will live long in the memory.
If success on the pitch were not enough in itself,
we have, as a kind of dream coming true, been
able to buy our ground back from Grosvenor.
The pain of 2005 can be forgotten now and our future
is in our own hands once again. Even the Habbin
Massive were moved to happiness about that.
Last Saturday it seemed that optimism and delight
had become fashionable. Surely we are safe from any
chance of relegation now and we can look forward
to some experimentation and games with far less
pressure. I was glad to visit a new ground, along
with 1,200 other Cambridge fans. They didn’t seem
quite ready for us. There were too few turnstiles
open, unacceptable queueing and over-zealous
stewarding to boot. Our fans were good natured
and loud throughout and keeping us out of local
pubs and searching pensioners wasn’t really called
for. I wonder if any clever, or desperate, statistician
has ever worked out how many managers have lost
their jobs for having the temerity to lose at home to
Cambridge. To be fair, Wimbledon were poor and
horribly physical at times and perhaps needed a
change of leadership.
I note that our old adversary Mr Akinfenwa is retiring
at the end of the season, having been with Wycombe
after many years at Wimbledon. He is a player who
hardly looks athletic but who has made the very most
of his ability. He has been a credit to the profession
and I wish him well. I first noticed him in a game at
Kingston where we had to put two defenders on him.
Apart from enjoying the game, some of us found
ourselves in a strip club by mistake. It looked like
an ordinary pub from the outside but it was far from
normal indoors!
Wycombe are perennial overachievers. This is very
much down to an inspired choice of managers. Martin
O’Neil took them from non- league obscurity to
being a highly respected and well established league
club. But for a broken leg, he would have been our
John Ruskin
When love and skill come together,
expect a masterpiece.
player manager. I have no doubt that he would have
been very successful with us.
Former player, Gareth Ainsworth took Wycombe to
their first ever season in the Championship. They
were a little unlucky to come straight down but it has
surprised no-one to see how well they have done this
season. I note that Sullay Kai Kai - who was once here
on loan - is in their squad. We will need to watch him
and be at our best. These days, no-one writes us off
and I am sure that we will give them a good game.
It has been a great season and there is more to come!
Another Amber invasion took place in Ipswich on
Saturday. Our team have given us some wonderful
days out and this season will be talked about
for many years to come. The manager and the
performances we have seen have made many more
forgettable seasons worthwhile. I hope the fans
have given them the same warm feeling. United in
Another Tuesday evening
game ahead of us and
tonight we face a tough
test in Wycombe. As
always, on behalf of
everyone connected with
the Women’s teams I
would like to wish Mark,
the staff and the players
the best of luck for
tonight’s game
The Women’s team have been
busy the last couple of weeks.
First up we faced title favourites
Billericay at the Abbey on 27th
March and we saw first-hand how
quickly a game can change when
you have the quality in attack that
they possess. The first 30 minutes
were fairly even and arguably
we should have made more of a
couple of good counter attacks.
However, one moment of lost
concentration just after the half
hour mark saw Billericay take the
lead. Within eight minutes, we
found ourselves 3-0 down and had
a mountain to climb. The second
goal was a defensive mix-up and
the third came as players started
to chase the game. This is a big
learning point for the group, as
it is vital to stay disciplined and
be resilient after falling behind to
give yourselves a chance to stay in
the game. In the second half we
showed a bit more of this and the
only goal of the second 45 minutes
came from another error where we
gave the ball away in our own half.
Harsh lessons to learn, but that is
what we must do to progress.
There was a quick opportunity to
put things right on Wednesday
evening as we faced a battling
Stevenage side fighting to avoid
relegation. It wasn’t an ideal time
to be missing six players with injury
and illness, which got worse as
skipper Laura Baker had to pull out
ill just before kick-off. The players
overcame all of that to battle out a
0-0 draw and show their resilience
and defensive qualities. The best
chance of the game fell to Laura
Mitchell who got to a perfect
Abi Davies cross only to put her
effort wide from six yards. It was
a game we would have ideally
wanted to take three points from,
but given the situation with so
many players unavailable, it wasn’t
a bad point either. Add to that a
clean sheet with no clear chances
for Stevenage, it was a great step
forward after the previous game.
As we come towards the end of
the season, we still want to finish
as high up the table as we can and
so we would love your support
on Sun 24th April when we face
Cambridge City at home in the
local derby.
Finally, we have a chance to win
some silverware when we face St
Ives Town in the County Cup Final
on Weds 13th April at Eynesbury
Rovers FC. We would love to have
your support at both those games
as we look to finish the season on
a high.
Enjoy the game tonight. Let’s get
behind the team and hopefully
we will be celebrating three more
points by the end of the evening.
Come on you U’s!
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
Memories Down
Good evening, folks.
It’s a shame but these
notes were written
prior to the Ipswich
game for deadline
reasons so I can’t tell
you all about the trip,
which personally is
one I had been looking
forward to since the
last meaningful fixture
there in November
1991.
Maybe next time. Welcome
anyway to tonight’s visitors
from High Wycombe. It’s
only five weeks since we
met at Adams Park; do we
know the record in terms
of the least number of days
between home and away
fixtures? Answers on a
postcard please.
So we are concentrating on
5 April 1983 this evening
and a home game vs Fulham
in the old Division Two.
Fulham were third at the
time, chasing promotion
and we were a relatively
comfortable 16th. Fulham
just missed out in the end
with a fourth place finish to
QPR, Wolves and Leicester,
whereas we climbed to
the heady heights of 12
ahead of the likes of Derby,
Middlesbrough, Palace and
Chelsea. Unfortunately, the
following season saw us
nosedive to the bottom of the
league early and we ended
up with just 24 points - 23
adrift of Oldham in 19th spot.
And 26 defeats.
One or two little funnies in
the programme that evening
- although manager John
Scan me to
read the archive
programme...
Docherty seemed to think
the game was being played
on a Saturday. One of the
highlights is news of the
youth team’s success in the
cup against Spurs, beating
them 3-1 with a brace from a
certain Mark Cooper and one
from Kevin Massey.
There are a lot of
contributions from mascots at
recent games, my favourite
being from ‘Elaine’ who
‘loved the crisps and sweets’!
And the infamous Cambridge
Sporting Dinner was coming
up at the end of the season
at the Garden House Hotel
and invitees included such
luminaries as ‘Mighty’ Morgan
- at the time the holder of a
Commonwealth Games gold
medal.
Talking of luminaries,
some noteworthy names
in the Fulham squad that
season. Manager Malcom
McDonald, future manager
Sean O’Driscoll, Paul Parker
and Ray Houghton, to name
but a few. Also worth noting
that you could buy a full
United strip from the Black &
Amber Shop for £5. In today’s
money that’s about £18 so
somebody’s doing all right,
aren’t they?
Enjoy yourselves.
In a repeat of the 2018 final, the
talented young U’s crop would
fancy their chances of bringing
some silverware to CB5 after
late showings helped them
dispatch Soham Town Rangers
1-3 and Cambridge City 2-4 in
the previous rounds. The visitors
- who were languishing in 12th in
the Thurlow Nunn Premier
Division - were seen as real
specialists in this competition,
appearing in six of the past nine
finals and aiming for a third
successive triumph.
United showcased immense
energy and a threat on the counter
attack during the early goings and
broke the deadlock. A pinpoint
pass from Yearn released Akanbi
down the left who picked his
spot and showed real assurance
in delicately drilling past an
onrushing Reynolds.
The visitors’ response was a strong
one. On the 22nd minute, a loose
clearance fell to Taylor Hastings
from outside of the box who
connected superbly by unleashing
a volley which darted a couple of
inches over the crossbar.
The sides were level after
30 minutes when a long throw
was cleared towards Walter
who timed his volley to perfection
by thundering past a helpless
Louis Chadwick from 20 yards
to spark euphoria amongst the
travelling contingent.
As the first period drew to a close,
it was the U’s who enjoyed the
flurry of chances. On 35, excellent
link-up play from Yearn and Akanbi
resulted in the goalscorer planting
an attempt towards the top corner
which Reynolds pawed away from
danger.
The shot-stopper was called into
action again moments later when
Dan Barton played Yearn in from
12 yards. The youngest scorer in
the U’s history looked for the near
post but was denied by the legs
of Reynolds. It concluded a tight
first half with both sides satisfied
with their work rate but perhaps
aggrieved not to have capitalised
on dominant spells.
Ten minutes after the break, the
hosts were scratching their heads
wondering how they were still
level. A jinking run from Glenn
McConnell freed up Barton who
beat his man and fired at Akanbi
who pulled the trigger twice which
captain Tom Williams astutely
denied both times.
The gas had been turned on for
some time, with the resistance
finally broken on the 71st minute
when the young U’s took the
lead once more. Yearn provided
the magic by picking out the top
corner with an audacious curler
into the top corner which Reynolds
could only watch.
A third almost looked inevitable.
Gill’s men should have been
home and dry on 75 when livewire
Akanbi sent in a low cross to
McConnell who fired over the bar
from 12 yards.
City had chances to force extratime
as the game reached its
dying embers. Gibbs raced into
the six-yard box and played a
fizzed ball towards substitute
Jordan Foster on 80 but he
couldn’t tuck home from a
scramble as it hit the post and the
U’s survived.
Ultimately, the damage was done.
For the first time since 1957,
Cambridge United got their hands
on the county trophy. A night to
remember and one which will no
doubt them in good stead for their
future endeavours in the game.
In other Academy news,
the Club is pleased
to announce that the
Terry Baker Memorial
Fixture will take place on
Tuesday 12th April at the
Abbey Stadium.
United’s U16s will take on West
Ham United’s U16s as we pay
tribute to a true Cambridge
United legend. Terry passed
away at the age of 83 in 2018
and played a huge part in the
history of the Club.
Terry was the Club Chairman
on three occasions, served on
the Board of Directors and was
named an Honorary Director
of the Football Club in 2016. A
passionate supporter of the Club
since 1947, Terry also provided
financial support during some of
the club’s darkest hours, ensuring
its survival.
Head of Academy Tom Pell said,
“We are really looking forward to
what should be a cracking game
at the Abbey Stadium. We are
delighted to welcome West Ham
Utd and I would like to pass on
our thanks to them for agreeing to
the game.
“This is something that we
started with our U15/16 group
pre pandemic and is something
we look forward to celebrating on
an annual basis moving forwards.
Terry was a U’s legend and
supported both the Club and the
Academy over many years and we
feel it is only right to recognise
this and are looking forward to
welcoming several members of
Terry’s family on the night.”
Val Baker, Terry’s wife has kindly
arranged for our Scholars to
partake in a Player of the Season
and Goal of the Season ceremony
to celebrate the achievements of
our young apprentices both onand-off
the pitch.
The Terry Baker Player of the
Season and Goal of the Season
Awards will be presented in the
Executive Lounge prior to the
game.
“I would like to thank Val and her
family for all their support through
the years and for their contribution
on the night for making it a
great experience for everyone
involved,” Tom added.
“I urge supporters who may have
seen a glimpse of our young
apprentices during this season’s
FA Youth Cup run to come to the
game and watch our U15 and U16
players, so they can experience all
that the Abbey has to offer.
“It would be greatly appreciated
and I am confident you will enjoy
seeing some of our promising
young players giving their all for
the badge.”
Tickets for the match are
available on the night for just £5
with Sam Gomarsall...
This Saturday’s 9th April home game against
Morecambe will be dedicated to its Community
Trust and the work they do in the local community.
The Matchday is sponsored by AstraZeneca and all
supporters are encouraged to “Bring a Pound to the
Ground” to help raise money for the Club’s dedicated
charity.
Bucket collectors will be positioned around the
ground ready to receive donations or alternatively,
supporters can Text TRUST to 70560 to donate £10.
“We are really excited to be hosting our annual
Community Trust Matchday at the game against
Morecambe,” Sam Gomarsall, Community Trust
Manager said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for us
to showcase the work we do and the difference it
makes.
“I am lucky enough to get to see day-in day-out
the impact on individuals and communities that our
programmes make and it is great that this will be on
show for United fans too!
“We are looking forward to welcoming beneficiaries
from the Trust projects to the day - from our disability
sport participants and walking footballers, to primary
school children on free school meals with their family.
“We are encouraging all U’s fans to get behind us
and to bring a pound to the ground to support the
Community Trust and all our initiatives to change
lives through sport.”
This year’s Community Trust Matchday will be the
biggest ever, with a wide range of activities, events
and exciting announcements being made during the
afternoon.
The Trust and AstraZeneca will be showing off the
Active Science programme, a partnership between
the charity and the biopharmaceutical firm, at the
front of the ground by the Club Shop where young
supporters will be able to take part in activities,
combining science and sport in exciting ways, ahead
of the game.
Participants of the Trust’s various programmes will
fill up the South Stand as 1,200 tickets have been
distributed to Walking Footballers, partner Schools,
Premier League Kicks players - who will help form the
players guard of honour - Disability Footballers and
Bootcamp members, amongst many others.
The Matchday Programme will be taken over by the
Trust with stories, case studies and editorial features
written by and about those who are impacted by their
work.
Following the success of the Half-Time Walking
Football entertainment at the recent match against
Shrewsbury, a Disability Sport demonstration will take
place during the break as over 30 participants will
strut their stuff on the Abbey Stadium turf.
459 primary school children across the region
have recently taken part in a Celebrating Diversity
Poetry competition with the winning entry to be
immortalized for supporters to see at the Abbey
Stadium. The winning poet will be contacted ahead
of the Matchday and invited to read out his work over
photos of the football action, write reports and
interview players.
Finally, hospitality guests will have the
opportunity to win a very special, signed
prize through the popular ‘Goal or No
Goal’ game and key staff and partners of
the Trust will deliver fascinating talks to
guests of the Executive Lounge and
Signature Suite.
So, please bring a Pound to the
Ground to support the Trust’s work
and the Club looks forward to
welcoming all of its supporters for a
very special Matchday.
view from the
press box
with Doug Shulman...
IT HAS BEEN A TERRIFIC COUPLE OF WEEKS FOR THE
U’S, SINCE WE LAST GATHERED AT THE ABBEY.
On that day, despite a good
performance against League
One’s form team in MK Dons,
the winless run stretched to five
games and four without scoring.
This Mark Bonner side has a
serious knack of responding to
adversity, though, with backto-back
away successes, both
supported up by clean sheets,
having now surely cemented
League One football for another
season.
A new year in a new division
has thrown up many different
challenges and the past two
matches on the road has
highlighted this. Wimbledon,
fighting to avoid the drop, were
aggressive, got the ball forward
quickly, denied the U’s space and
made the game scrappy. Find a
way to win is the adage and Adam
May did that brilliantly to seal the
points, with a quality trademark
long-range strike which moved
him onto six goals for the season;
four of which have been hit from
outside the 18-yard box. Not a bad
trick to have in your locker as a
midfielder.
The game at Ipswich was
completely dissimilar, against a
team full of confidence, having
kept nine clean sheets in the past
eleven unbeaten fixtures, with six
of those shut-outs coming in the
past half a dozen home games
at Portman Road and with it a
play-off place zooming sharply
into focus. However, I thought the
U’s managed the game brilliantly.
They were tenacious in midfield,
defended astutely and calmly,
nullified the expensively assembled
Ipswich attack, always carried a
threat at the top end of the pitch
and were thoroughly deserving of
the three points.
The 26,515 gate was also the
biggest league crowd the U’s have
played in front of since May 1993,
when 27,399 crammed into Upton
Park to see Ian Atkins’ United take
on West Ham. Last Saturday was a
brilliant one for the supporters to
savour, with local bragging rights
falling their way and the social
media banter in full flow! They are
certainly enjoying themselves this
season.
I had a feeling the U’s would pull
off another statement away win in
the league this season and, not
only that, but the victory at Ipswich
moves them closer to the top half
finish they are clearly targeting.
Even more satisfying, though, is the
16-point gap between United and
the shark-infested waters of the
drop zone, where practically every
single pre-season prediction I read
by so-called experts last summer,
said the U’s would be placed. They
clearly didn’t do their homework.
A CLASH UNDER THE ABBEY FLOODLIGHTS WITH THE
SOLE TASK OF GATE-CRASHING THE TOP HALF OF SKY
BET LEAGUE ONE – SOME POSITION TO BE IN.
Whilst our fate may be all but
secured for another season, it’s
up in the air for many sides. With
a title that is anyone’s guess,
a play-off race so tight that
the highest-scoring side in the
division are on the outskirts of
it, and a dogfight at the bottom
which is destined to lead to finalday
drama, let the games begin.
Wigan Athletic battled to a
valuable point towards their
title pursuit as they shared the
spoils in a 1-1 draw with Bolton
Wanderers in the early kick-off.
The hosts made the most of their
early dominance when James
McClean’s delivery travelled into
the far corner. Their inability
to increase the advantage was
capitalised on by substitute Jon
Dabi Bodvarsson, who nicked
a late equaliser to send the
travelling 4000 Trotters fans potty.
A creditable top-half finish on their
return looks a given for Ian Evatt’s
side. Where Latics are concerned,
they’re level on 80 points with
leaders Rotherham United, boast a
game in hand and have favourable
form.
That’s not to say the division is
a two-horse race, nonetheless,
as MK Dons steamed to within
a point of the automatic
promotion spots as Mo Eisa and
Scott Twine struck to dispatch
Shrewsbury Town 2-0. Now 13
games unbeaten, the form team
mean business. A three-match
winning run may be banished for
Salop, but survival looks all but
guaranteed as they occupy 16th.
Write Plymouth Argyle off at your
peril – a stunning volley from
skipper Joe Edwards capped a
monumental afternoon at Pride
Park as they edged out promotion
rivals Oxford United 1-0. Now
eight points clear of the U’s, who
sit in 7th after dropping points
successively, the play-offs is the
minimum for the Pilgrims after
accumulating a pernicious seven
wins in eight.
Possessing the best home record
in the EFL, it came as no surprise
when Sheffield Wednesday
departed Hillsborough with a 2-1
success over AFC Wimbledon.
In truth, a point apiece looked
destined when Ayoub Assal
cancelled out Jack Hunt’s early
diving header, but Lee Gregory
popped up in the dying embers
to steer the Owls’ gap in 5th. With
a horror winless run stretched to
22 games, the Dons slip to 22nd
and are four points adrift – they’ve
never experienced relegation
since their 2002 formation, the
task of avoiding that fate is
arduous.
A winner at the death from Nathan
Broadhead helped Sunderland
move back into the play-off picture
and ensure a seventh game
unbeaten after they overcame
Gillingham 1-0. Decisive for both
sides’ aspirations, Neil Harris’ men
fall to 20th and are just two points
clear of the drop.
Wycombe Wanderers celebrated
the services of record goalscorer
Adebayo Akinfenwa with a
convincing 2-0 victory against
beleaguered Doncaster Rovers at
with seconds on the clock Boyle
grabbed his brace to put both
sides on 51 points.
A feisty encounter at the Valley,
where both sides finished with
10 men, fell the way of Lincoln
City who grounded out a 1-2 win.
Morgan Whittaker took the lead
with a fine finish, before Alex
Gilby and then the goalscorer
received their marching orders
either side of half-time. Anthony
Scully put the game to bed for
the Imps, who were already home
and dry despite Jayden Stockley’s
consolation. A return to winning
ways for the visitors, they’re
comfortably in 18th whereas
the Addicks are 15th after three
previous wins and clean sheets.
Morecambe returned to winning
ways after going 12 without
courtesy of a comprehensive
3-0 triumph over 10-man Burton
Albion. Arthur Gnahoua, Adam
Phillips and Cole Stockton all
struck during a rampant period
to aid the Shrimps’ survival hopes
– two points from safety with a
mammoth game in their favour.
A significant afternoon at Gresty
Road saw doomed Crewe
Alexandra fall to a 1-3 loss against
Fleetwood Town. Although Chris
Long salvaged hope when he
equalised from Harvey Macadam’s
first senior goal, substitutes
Anthony Pilkington and Ellis
Harrison handed the sucker punch
to put the Cod Army two points
and places afloat. For the doomed
Railwaymen, they’ve lost 12 in 13
and are 12 points from safety –
frankly, they’ve run out of steam.
