WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF SAINT IGNATIUS’ COLLEGE | TERM 03: WEEK 08: ISSUE 25 | THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2011
Senator Alex Gallacher and Headmaster, Fr Robert Davoren SJ
I hope Monday’s student-free day gave students the opportunity to catch
up on some school work or to spend their day on some equally important
‘down time’. The day provided an opportunity for Senior School teaching
staff to meet in year level groups to discuss pastoral or academic concerns
relating to students. Junior School teaching staff members were involved in
professional development regarding the Made in the Image of God program,
working with presenter Ms Marianne Hughes from the Catholic Education
Office. The College has three student-free days per year which is consistent
with other schools, both private and public.
As the term draws to an end, many activities are yet to take place. Year
12 students have commenced their Trial Examinations, the Jarrumwani –
Journey of the Heart takes place, the Free to be Me and Being Boys camps
commence, Year 3 Sacrament of Reconciliation gets underway, the Senior
Sports Dinner and Junior School Sports Day will be held; in fact, the list
goes on and on. With only two weeks left to end of term, the students will be
kept occupied and engaged with the numerous events occurring.
Many of you would be aware of the recent naming of an Adelaide priest by Senator Nick
Xenophon regarding allegations of abuse. Archbishop Philip Wilson has written a thorough
account of how the Archdiocese has dealt with this particular case. This statement can be
located at the following link www.adelaide.catholic.org.au/sites/Archbishop/Page_2832
In light of the media scrutiny associated with this case, it is well worth taking the time to hear
a more detailed view.
FROM THE HEADMASTER CONTINUED
Year 12
For many of our Year 12 students, this week of Trial Examinations is the last opportunity to experience the process
before the SACE examinations that commence in mid-October. This preparation is important as it not only allows
students the chance to test their knowledge, but also to familiarise themselves in working within time constraints.
One hopes they will feel well-prepared and comfortable about the whole process. The SACE Stage 2 Examination
timetable is available on the SACE website. Students who have not had examinations should have been using
their time wisely to complete summative assessment tasks and practical work. As this term is beginning to draw
to an end, it is very important that our Year 12 cohort use all their initiative and energy in the last surge towards
the finish line. Speech Day, the Graduation Ball and Valete are fast approaching. All students can look forward to
resting as a reward for what has been a very full and demanding year.
Subject Selections
During Term Three, students at all year levels have been making subject selection choices for 2012. This process
also includes Subject Counselling days for students in Years 10 and 11. At the Subject Counselling Day the
subjects selected by the student are discussed with them in relation to future career aspiration and current
academic performance. All students are allocated an interview time with a member of staff to talk about their
subject selections. Parents/Guardians are invited to attend to be part of the process. Prior to this, assemblies are
held so that Heads of Departments can advise students of subject information. Subject selections are made online
for Years 8 to 11, in addition to the Information Evenings held for Years 9, 10 & 11.
Feast Day of St Robert Bellarmine – Saturday 17 September
Most of the College community would know of our Bellarmine Room
which is located near the Senior School tuck-shop. This room is used
often for meetings, dinners, recitals and receptions. It also contains
portraits of previous Headmasters and, in central place, a portrait of
Robert Bellarmine, a Jesuit Cardinal and Saint. Since his feast day falls
this Saturday, I thought some background to this great man would be
timely.
Born at Montepulciano, Italy, October 4th, 1542, St. Robert Bellarmine
was the third of ten children. Robert entered the newly formed Society of
Jesus in 1560 and after his ordination went on to teach at Louvain (1570-
1576) where he became famous for his Latin sermons. In 1576, he was
appointed to the chair of controversial theology at the Roman College,
becoming Rector in 1592; he went on to become Provincial of Naples in
1594 and Cardinal in 1598. This saint was the spiritual father of St.
Aloysius Gonzaga, helped St. Francis de Sales obtain formal approval
of the Visitation Order, and prudently opposed severe measures in the
case of Galileo. He has left us a host of important writings, including works of devotion and instruction, as well as
controversy. He died in 1621. (Catholic.org)
The Blessing and Opening of the Junior School BER project, MacKillop Building, was a very pleasing event. I was
delighted with the outcome and thank everyone involved with the success of the day.
Parent Survey on Computers for Students
I am grateful to parents who completed an on-line survey which informs the College of parent wishes regarding
our forthcoming purchases of student computers under the Federal Government’s Digital Education Revolution
program (DER 1:1). A concern for the weight of students’ bags prompted many to propose paper textbooks be
replaced by digital versions and to ensure the weight of the computer device be kept to a minimum. Many parents
in this survey, and previously, have expressed concerns on how they can control their children’s access to the
internet if the children have their own computers in their bedrooms. Similarly, a number of parents felt they
should not be required to master the technical challenges of running the computer at home, or should be able
to easily access technical support. There was divergent opinion on the worth of iPads compared to small laptop
devices. Some noted the superiority of the iPad for internet research and web communication whereas the strength
of the laptop was seen to be its compatibility with existing Windows environments and popular software, such
as the Microsoft Office Suite. Parents also mentioned issues related to security, student care of machines and
wireless access at school and home.
The College has recently purchased a number of tablets and small laptops to trial and evaluate. Feedback from
staff using such devices has been helpful. I am most grateful to parents who have taken the trouble to complete
the survey. As the survey is still available, I encourage others to convey their views to the College on this important
matter.
While I believe we are close to a decision on the devices to be purchased for our 2012 Year 10 and 11 students, we
know that in a short time the chosen machine will surely be superseded by something better. We hope to make
the best decision, at the time of purchase, and choose products which will best enhance the teaching and learning
processes of the College. Thanks to all families who have assisted us in this matter.
Staff Member Taken Ill
With his permission, I wish to inform the College community that Mr Mirko Petkovic has recently been diagnosed
with a malignant cancer of the oesophagus. Mr Petkovic is currently receiving medical advice to determine the best
treatment. Doctors are hopeful that treatment will be effective. Mr Petkovic is therefore on indefinite leave. All his
classes have been effectively covered. Our prayers and Mass intentions will continue for him.
FROM THE HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
Week 8 of Term 3 is another busy week with much happening and many events to look forward to before the end
of term.
The student free day on Monday was used by staff to work further with Mrs Marianne Hughes from Catholic
Education on the development and preparation for implementation of the current mandated Religious Education
programme, Made in the Image of God. Teachers worked in teams to explore optimal ways to incorporate the
familiar and the new into appropriate year-level units and hence develop a scope and sequence plan. Many of the
topics are familiar and involve small changes from past programmes. You will have read over the past few weeks
Dr Greaves’ overviews and introductions to the new document.
Our Year 3s travelled to the Senior School last Wednesday for Reconciliation. It was pleasing to see a number of
parents assisting and providing support to the event and to the students as they embark on the journey through
Sacraments of Initiation.
Last Thursday our Year 4s went to Victor Harbour to explore ideas for Healthy Cities and sustainable living. This
week Year 2s headed to the Zoo and Receptions and Year 1s had a visit from Delta Dog.
Parents with students at the IEY will have received the Vacation Care Programme. I remind those parents with
students who will still be 5 years old at the 14th of October that the centre is licensed for 5 year olds and hence
they can be booked in for Vacation Care at the IEY in the coming term break. Those intending to use this service
(for 3 to 5 year olds) will need to book soon to ensure a place and to assist with planning.
Before School Care is provided should your child need to be dropped off before 8:15am. It is important that
students who arrive at school are in the care of an adult. Those with sport or music tuition before school or those
whose parents remain with them until the play bell at 8:15am are in such care. All others need to be in Out of
School Hours Care. Any students arriving before 8:15am should be booked in and go straight to OSHC. Students
not in supervised care in the school yard before yard duty commences will be escorted to OSHC.
Life Education classes provided through the Life Ed Van ceased this week with all year levels having accessed
sessions focussed on a range of Life Education topics.
As recently advised, teachers are currently working on Class Placement proposals for 2012. The goals of this
include achieving balance in terms of overall numbers, gender, learning needs and social dynamics. Significant
effort goes into achieving class arrangements that are most conducive to a good learning environment.
Speech Day next term approaches. This will involve our Year 3 to Year 6 students being transported to the
Convention Centre to participate in the day with all our Secondary Students and many parents.
Thank you again all shoppers who are supporting the docket programmes to obtain equipment for the school, and
to Mrs Karen Murphy for her generous efforts to oversee this. We have even had some Old Scholars generously
consider us and send in dockets!
Thank you also to all our many volunteers and, as we transit from Winter Sport and look ahead to summer sport
I wish to express thanks to our sporting coaches for their generous work. It is the generosity and commitment of
these volunteer parents, old scholars and teaching staff that enables our students to access a wide range of co-
curricular experiences. It is hence very important to support and assist all these people and I ask all parents to
FROM THE HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL CONTINUED
ensure they encourage students to be courteous and co-operative in all co-curricular activities.
With the 10th anniversary of September the 11th 2001, there have been many ceremonies and much reflection on
the past decade.
Our world is a beautiful place, but there is much that needs to be improved. In speaking of his country, Nelson
Mandela said: “If there are dreams about a beautiful South Africa, there are also roads that lead to their goal. Two
of these roads could be named Goodness and Forgiveness”.
When one feels wronged, it might seem hard to forgive. Children in a game may accidentally hurt a friend or
perhaps bump them a little harder than intended. There can be a tendency to respond in kind or there can be a
decision to forgive. Retaliating or responding in kind usually leads to escalation and division. Being big enough to
choose to absorb and forgive can lead to a more beautiful world. How many times should one forgive? As Jesus
said to Peter: ‘Not just seven, but seventy times seven’. Matthew 18:22
“If we really want to love we must learn how to forgive”. Mother Teresa.
Coles SPORTS for SCHOOLS IS BACK! The Junior School has registered so start collecting
vouchers now.
At the beginning of the year we received a fantastic array of new sporting equipment thanks
to last year’s program. Again, every $10 spent at Coles Supermarkets up until October
18th will earn a Coles Sports for Schools voucher worth 1 point. If you’re shopping at
Coles and want to help, be sure to ask for your vouchers and drop them into the collection
box located in the Junior School front office (or put them in your child’s diary for collection
in the classroom). Check with family, friends and neighbours who shop at Coles - the
more we collect, the more equipment we will be able to redeem. For more details head
to sportsforschools.coles.com.au or contact Junior School Co-ordinator - Karen Murphy
(bkmurf@bigpond.com).
Dockets can be dropped off at the Junior School Front Office.
Mass is celebrated in the College Chapel at
the Senior School at 8.00am on Wednesday
and Friday during term time. The Mass is
for anyone who wishes to attend.
During the October school holidays, Year 12 students
are strongly encouraged to attend revision seminars
which will be offered in a number of subjects at the
College. A schedule is being finalised and details will be
distributed to students and parents in the near future.
There are also a number of external seminar providers
(see below) and we urge students interested in pursuing
this option to book in early as places quickly fill.
The value of such seminars should not be underestimated
and we strongly encourage students to avail themselves
of these opportunities wherever possible.
The process of student subject selections for next year
is almost complete and I am pleased to advise that all
has progressed very smoothly.
The Year 7 assembly to outline the subject selection
process to the students was held on Tuesday this week.
Signed subject selection forms are to be returned to
Home Group teachers by Tuesday, 20th September.
I wish to express my thanks to the many staff involved
in assisting with this process over the past few weeks.
I would also like to thank the parents/guardians who
attended the information evenings held recently and
hope they found these evenings to be very informative.
IMPORTANT NOTICES FOR PARENTS
Withdrawal of a Student
At this stage of the school year, the attention of
parents is drawn to the following paragraph which
appears each year on the College fee schedule:
“Parents are required to give the Headmaster one
term’s notice of withdrawal of a student, or a full
instalment of fees will be charged”.
If your child will not be returning to the College
next year, your early advice in writing to the
Headmaster (Senior Campus) or Head of Junior
School prior to the conclusion of Term 3, Friday
30th September, would be appreciated.
Information Paper #2:
Further information about the curriculum document
Made in the Image of God
Last week I wrote to introduce you to the Made in the Image
of God curriculum.
Made in the Image of God is the personal development
curriculum developed by Catholic Education SA and
mandated by Archbishop Philip Wilson for use in SA Catholic
schools.
Catholics believe that God creates freely out of love. Humans
are created out of love and are called to love. Humans are
intrinsically good because they are of God.
God saw everything that he had made and indeed it was very
good. [Genesis 1:31]
I concluded last week by mentioning that this curriculum is
divided into three band level standards.
• R-2
• 3-4
• 5-6
Within each band level are the four strands of content.
Staff at the Junior School are currently investigating links
between the three stands of ‘Being Human’, ‘Being Connected’
and ‘Being Moral’ with existing Health, Child Protection
and Social Education curricula within the school. This will
ensure that our various health, development and protection
programs are in line with each other.
On the Monday student-free day, staff attended a workshop
about the ‘Being Sexual’ strand, facilitated by Catholic
Education Office consultant, Ms Marianne Hughes. This
strand will replace the Human Growth component of the
Junior School Personal Development Curriculum which has
been in place for many years. Staff were re-introduced to the
curriculum and then spent the afternoon devising learning
units, which are both psychologically and developmentally
appropriate for each year level.
An overview team, consisting of both parents and staff, is
being formed to look at the program before its proposed
implementation in Term Four.
More next week.
INDEPENDENT PRIMARY SCHOOLS SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Wednesday 7th September 2011
St Peter’s Woodlands 126 Saint John’s Grammar 122 Westminster 115 Pulteney Grammar 62
Westminster School were very generous to organise and host this new carnival for our Primary swimmers this year. A combination
of 17 Junior School students and 8 Year 7 students were selected to represent Saint Ignatius’ College.
The carnival structure allowed for students to have a number of swims and all of the Saint Ignatius’ College swimmers took to the
water with confidence and the desire to compete to the best of their ability. There were some fine individual performances as well
as some promising results from our youngest swimmers. Maddison Kane, Tom Roberts and Lachlan Boots (Year 3) represented
the College superbly, even winning some of their age group events. The Year 4 swimmers (Sophie Beard, Alison Munday and
Grace Roberts) worked hard in the 10 Years and Under category recording some personal best times. For some these swimmers
it was also their first interschool competition, so they should be extremely proud of their achievements. Will Ferrari, Sophie
Boots, Matthew Foster-Smith, Jonas Suen and Georgina Bailey were strong Year 5 representatives. Year 6 swimmers (Alex Turner,
Emmanuel Valente, Jessica Gallasch, Lilli Bowen, Sam Davies and Tom van der Jeugd) performed well in the 12 year old heats. The
Years 7s, Abby Duncan, Tony Barker, Sam Boots, Melanie Tudini, Maddie Seymour, James Kennedy, Issy Schwab and Austin Young
found their form again after a winter away from school swimming and filled all the heats in the 13 years age group.
Thank you to all parents who assisted with the event, especially Mrs Claire Duncan who selected the team and ensured that all
swimmers were ready to compete. The team finished 3rd at the conclusion of the carnival which was a very promising result
against some very strong swimming schools.
Summary of Minkey Hockey 2011 –
Coached by
Lucy Roberts and Michael Robinson
This report is provided as a summary of the hockey
season Minkey Gold Hockey Team. We really enjoyed
attending practices each Friday morning at 7.30 am
and were very proud of the team during the season.
They won every game except the last which was their
best game.
The season started off with a bang. The team won the
first match 8-1. Everyone contributed and the team
passed the ball well to the wings. Then in the second
match we welcomed a new member of the team, Tom.
We won the second match 2-1. It was a very close game
and everyone contributed. The ball was passed down
the wings extremely well and the centre was used well.
Everyone’s tackling was superb. In the third match we
played really well as a team. Cassie and Olivia L played
to their positions really well and were involved in every
goal. Olivia L scored a freak goal from the boundary line.
The score was 5-1. In the fourth match we out played
the opposition winning 8-1. Everyone contributed and
the ball was passed around evenly. Everyone ran the
ball down the wings well. In the last match we played
our rivals St Ignatius Red. It was a very intense game
of hockey with the score being 5-2 at half time. The
team played extremely well and then came out in the
second half with all guns blazing with 2 goals in quick
succession. Ignatius Red came and scored 2 quickly.
Ignatius got 1 back but the score ended up at 9-5
Ignatius Reds way. It was a great game to watch.
It was a pleasure to watch them grow as a team and as
individual players. We believe all team members have
great potential going into the future. We hope that they
all continue playing hockey next year.
Thank you to Mrs Roberts for being present at every
game. Thank you to all the teachers that supported
our involvement as coaches especially Mr Brady, Mr
Schliebs and Mr Stenta.
NETBALL
JC Ignatius Blue St Josephs Payneham W 13 - 1
Netball
JC Ignatius Blue 13 defeated St Josephs Payneham 1
A very strong win for the year 6 Netball team in the first final. All girls played extremely well to take them into the Grand Final
on 24/9. Alice Winter was magnificent in defence, giving them very little chance to get the ball. Isabel was also very strong in
defence and our goal shooters didn’t let us down. Well done again. Good luck for the Grand Final.
Matthew Traeger representing Australia at
The Hague International Model United Nations Competition
Year Twelve student Matthew Traeger (12.7) has been the only South Australian
selected to represent Australia at The Hague International Model United Nations
Competition, to be held in January 2012, in The Hague, The Netherlands. He is
currently looking for financial sponsorship to cover travel and conference costs
for this brilliant opportunity, which will find students from around the world
gathered together for one week to debate international issues and prepare
reports to be presented to Mr Ban Ki Moon, the United Nations Secretary
General. Matthew was selected for this opportunity following his achievements
at the United Nations Youth Association’s National Youth Conference, which was
this year held in Adelaide in July. If you believe your business or organisation
would be willing to contribute financially to Matthew’s endeavors, or to find
out more, please contact him at samedia@unyouth.org.au or by phone on 0408
Emergency Appeal
for the Victims
of the
Famine in the Horn of Africa
Dear Friends,
Our hearts go out to the families that are su ering from the famine in the Horn of Africa. We see their
pictures on TV and in our newspapers. The Jesuit provincial of East Africa and the director of the
Jesuit Refugee Service have wri en to us in these words:-
A severe famine is threatening the lives of close to 10 million people in the Horn of Africa. It is a humanitarian
crisis of catastrophic proportion. The famine has triggered a mass movement of people in the region, especially
from Somalia to Kenya and Ethiopia.
Years of con ict and sporadic droughts have displaced nearly two million Somalis and the gures are rising
quickly. By 20 July, this year, more than 120,000 Somalis had ed into Kenya and Ethiopia. This month as many
as 3,000 have been arriving daily into the two countries. Some 11 million people are believed to have been a ected
by the worst drought in over half a century. If action is not taken immediately,
famine will spread to the rest of southern Somalia.
If you would like to support what the Jesuits in East Africa are doing to
alleviate this catastrophic situation and improve the lives of the people
both in the refugee camps as well as in famine stricken villages in
northern Kenya, then please send a donation and we ll make sure that
it goes to help alleviate the plight of these desperate families.
With Gratitude,
