What an event the AS Kielder 500 was,
blues skies and sunshine to accompany
the wilderness riding in Kielder Forest.
Thank you to all of you that made it a
great weekend for Adventure Rallying.
Our 100% tarmac roadbook event, the
Cannonball Rally Challenge is underway
and few riders have already completed
the route successfully. The RallyMoto
Team will be out on the 24th April to
ride the route and have a bit of fun so
hopefully we will see you there.

the Ice Man Yeti title - well done guys.
We will have more news on the Adventure
Rally experiences and Camps and also
we have the Dark Skies Trophy as we

rescheduled for the 4/5th June and we
now have a confirmed date for everything
to roll out in June.
The Ice Breaker Challenge is about
to close and the final results will be
processed online - many riders have earnt

This was all set to be an easygoing
day of riding, friendly for the big
bike riders and those new to roadbooking
- and for the most part it was.
However, as is the way when running
live events, expect the unexpected!
Despite a thorough reccy carried out only a couple of days
beforehand which highlighted several road closures in the
area, on the Sunday morning of the event we were made
aware of roadworks which impacted the first fifteen or so
miles of the route.
Being the master of thinking on his toes, Burt swiftly came
up with a plan, explained it to the riders, and without delay
they were out on the route with some handwritten amends
to follow on their roadbooks.
So overall it was great practise for the newcomers and an
extremely pleasant day of riding for the regulars.
The sky was clear all day, the trails mostly dry, and the
historical area of Hertfordshire offered plenty of beautiful
sights to behold!
This is my first time doing this,
it’s a bit of a practise run for
the Kielder 500. I’ve never read
a roadbook before, and literally
had no instruction before. It was
surprisingly easy but you do get
caught out sometimes.. But it’s
been a fantastic day, the weather’s
been superb, and I thoroughly
loved it. I’ll be back again!

IT HAD BEEN A WHILE SINCE
WE’D RUN AN ‘EXTREME’
ADVENTURE CANNONBALL
EVENT, SO THE PLAN WAS TO
SEND A BUNCH OF RIDERS
INTO THE HILLS OF MID WALES
AND DOWN THE STRATA FLORI-
DA IN EARLY FEBRUARY.
Of course after several weeks of
mild weather, the day before the
event it turned torrential. Last minute
checks of the route confirmed
a section unrideable due to excessively
deep water, so a quick plan
was made, a detour was sorted,
marhsalls were put in place, lead
riders briefed and off they went
into the wind and rain and onto the
epic trails of mid wales.
Burt had added some special little
extras into the navigation on this
roadbook. Several hidden waypoints
were included along the
way, sometimes nestled amongst
what has become knows as his
‘tricky triangles’. Riders not only
had to focus on staying upright,
but keep their wits about them in
WALES
order to stay on course. Most of us
will know how tricky this can be in
tough conditions!
Even when we run these more
extreme events there is often at
least one rider who turns up to try
it out for the first time. The rider
pictured on the right was this guy
and despite him being completely
new to the sport, he got on just
fine on his XR250, (probably one of
the more reliable bikes one could
choose for these conditions!) and
absolutely loved the navigation.
Fair play to him.
As per usual John and Alan were
there to make sure no-one got left
behind, sweeping the course and
having a fun time doing so!
“We want more of them Burt!”, Alan
declared at the end of the day.
“That was the best course I’ve ridden
in a long time!”.

THE FIRST ICE MAN YETIS
“So with a weeks pass from Parkhurst
prison Isle of Wight for good
behaviour I came up with a plan to
do six rallies in six days, what could
possibly go wrong?
Sunday
The first was the Hertfordshire
cannonball where are I rode with Steve
Burbidge. In his first rally he grasped
it quickly and with only a few hiccups
we finished in glorious weather.
Monday
Now on my own for the rest of the
week I did the Thetford Forest
icebreaker with only one trip into a
ditch - it all went well.
Tuesday
Powered by
The Peaks with its stunning scenery
was a windy one.
By now a pattern had arrived get up
early do the rally in the morning drive
to the next venue in the afternoon - eat,
sleep, repeat.

and south downs earlier that month the
challenge was now complete

”I don’t normally ride in the UK during
winter. I hate the cold but when I read
about the IceBreaker Challenge in the
mag I decided to give one or two a go.
I ordered some heated grips, thermal
underware and several pairs of warm
socks and found a couple mates to
come with me!
Tony Marsden came on the first one,
‘North York Moors’. It was great to have
some tech savvy company whilst getting
to grips with the digital roadbook
app. Once we figured out how it all
worked and got the bluetooth controller
to scroll through tulips I was a huge fan!
It’s simple, accurate and other than a
couple of small teething issues we had
no issues..
North Yorks was great. The deep ford
was brilliant! Tony sent me through
first and it didn’t look so deep on a tall
KTM690 but Tony followed on the little
390 and we realised it was over the top
of his boots!
Lakes, Cotswold’s and Salisbury completed
with a bunch of other RallyMoto
members, some new and some veterans.
We had a great laugh and some
great weather too!
The Peaks was ridden in a blizzard. A
complete whiteout on the higher parts
made the nav super difficult, cars sliding
down roads hitting each other police
road closures and lots of road rage
made for an interesting day. 80km or so
into the route I almost bailed but police
let me ride round the closure so I carried
on and got to the end very grateful
for the heated grips and warm socks.
Once I’d got through a few I decided to
to try for them all so the last four, Peaks,
Salisbury, Thetford and South Downs
done back to back in 4 days so I could
tick them off before my holiday to sunny
Spain... Where it rained and snowed for
4 days!”

It’s been great. The thing that really impressed
me was the camaraderie amongst everyone. If
somebody has a problem then they all muck in
and help out, which is great. And of course you
get to ride for about eight hours off road which is
amazing. I’ll definitely be doing it again, hopefully
soon!
Somehow, the first
heatwave of the year just
happened to coincide
precisely with the first 500 event of the year!

It was a fantastic weekend, thanks
so much to everyone organising
and running the event and for all
the support during my first one.
It’s a rare occurence that the waterproofs stay packed away when riding in
the north of Enlgand in March, but this weekend saw riders shed their thermals
and return to base each day covered in dust instead of mud!
The perfect weather was, however, a stark juxtaposition to the storm devastated
forest in which we rode through. The scale of the damaged caused
by multiple named storms hitting the area earlier in the year was a humbling
sight to behold, and made us even more grateful to be able to ride there at
all!
A massive thanks to Forestry England for all the work they did clearing the
main tracks and welcoming us all so warmly back into the area.
It would appear that we
have an impressive
reputation to uphold,
so thankyou to all for
taking part and doing
your bit to give motorcyclists
in the UK a
good name!

It’s been fantastic, couldn’t have wished for better weather. Just riding around in
an MX shirt and armour, it’s been so warm. The chance to ride on the forest tracks
is fantastic, roads you wouldn’t normally be allowed to go on has been amazing..
apart from all the dust! Just loved it and I’ll be back for more.

“We lost about a million trees in the space of
3 hours when storm Arwen hit Northumberland.
Most of the communities around you
had no power for 5 to 7 to 10 days. So we’ve
been through quite a journey and actually we
lost track of all the other storm names because
one weekend we had two storms in forty eight
hours.
We’re sorry but for this event (Kielder 500)
we’ve had to change the routes. We have
250 square miles of Kielder forest, then
all of the other forests in Northumberland,
and some of the other forests will not reopen
in 2022. That’s the scale of what we’ve
got. Over half a million tonnes of timber came
down that night. And to give you an idea of
the scale, in south Scotland just over the border,
8 million trees came down.
Keep your great reputation up, we really welcome
you, North Tyne Valley welcomes you,
communities do, Bellingham does. You are
giving a really good reputation to motorbiking.
We deal with a lot of antisocial behaviour
across Northumberland. What you do is you
help me and the police and the local authorities
when we get into discussions with people
saying “well you do nothing for motorbiking
do you?” We can say “actually that’s not quite
correct. Have you seen the RallyMoto event
which is really responsible and all the farmers
love them?”
So that’s what you’ve got, a really great reputation
so keep it up and thanks for coming! “
Our Mini Fairing has a secret.
You don’t need the fairing.
Which means that if you have an ADV bike.
And want to mount a roadbook.
It’s the quickest and simplest solution.
Ride to the 500. Mount it.
Ride the 500.
Take it off. Ride home.

MODS? Very few, as when I first bought it, it was one
of the very first of the new model so few aftermarket
parts were available. I gave it to Rally Raid products
so they could strip it, measure for their catalogue of
parts. So a 40mm lowering link, a billet chain (front
sprocket) guard and a new fuel filler cap as that gives
more protection from muck on the trails.
A Seat Concepts seat, very comfortable but probably
a waste as I very rarely get to sit down.
Oh and a Wings exhaust, not because I want the noise,
although it does sound good, but because the stock
exhaust just gets so hot it’s not safe in my mind. I’ve
burned holes in trousers and it makes you swear if
you grab it by mistake when picking the bike up
from one of the moment when the bike gets tired on
the trails.
PERSONAL COMMENTS: For me It’s the perfect
bike to compliment my KTM250 Freeride. It
gets a lot more use, it munches up the long
distance miles it goes anywhere I have the
nerve to take it. It does the toughest of
lanes, It’s nimble and being a single cylinder
four stroke it doesn’t pull your arms off
yet has all the power I will ever need.
Straight off the shelf the 690 Adventure
R is a bike fit for adventure. Just a set
of knobblie tyres for those trickier
trails is all that’s needed.
