offer and can be booked with your Coach Captain once on tour.

General Tour Information 

The following information has been formulated based on the most 

frequently asked questions of travellers prior to their departure to 

New Zealand. Please take the time to read this information carefully 

as it will be useful for you in preparation for your Grand Pacific tour. 

All information was correct at the time of printing and is subject to

LUGGAGE LIMITS 

All travellers are supplied with a Grand Pacific Tours Travel Bag for 

personal and small items which can be carried inside the aircraft and 

on the coach when travelling. Each traveller is entitled to carry one 

suitcase on tour. 

The sum of the suitcases’ length, width and depth MUST NOT 

exceed 140cm. Weight limits also apply to luggage due to Occupational 

Health and Safety issues. The maximum allowed by most airlines and 

coach companies is 20kg (44lbs). Luggage over this allowance will be 

charged by the airline at the applicable rate - please check with your 

Travel Agent for more details. 

Please be aware that oversize or overweight luggage may be 

refused to be carried by airlines and coach companies.

All luggage is entirely at the “owners risk” whilst on tour and we 

strongly recommend that travel insurance be taken out by each traveller 

to cover accidental damage or loss. 

LUGGAGE LABEL AND NAME BADGE 

Located in your ticket wallet. For proper identification, please ensure 

you attach your Grand Pacific Tours luggage label to your main suitcase 

and not your hand luggage. This will assist the Coach Captain in 

identifying your luggage when loading the coach. Ensure you wear your 

name badge at all times. 

PASSPORT 

All visitors require a passport to enter New Zealand. Your passport must 

be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure date. 

You do not need a visa or permit to visit New Zealand if you are an 

Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport, or if you are an 

Australian resident with a current Australian resident return visa. As this 

information does change, please check with your Travel Agent at time of 

booking for the most current requirements. Outgoing passenger cards 

can be obtained at the airport and are to be completed prior to passing 

through Customs. 

RESTRICTION ON LIQUIDS 

Restrictions exist on the amount of liquids, aerosols and gel items that can 

be carried in the cabin of international flights. You can only carry liquids, 

aerosols or gels in your hand luggage if each container is no more than 

100ml, and these containers collectively can fit comfortably into one 

resealable, 20cm x 20cm transparent plastic bag. You will find a resealable 

transparent plastic bag included in your ticket wallet to cater for this. 

ELECTRICITY 

New Zealand has the same electrical current as Australia, 240 volts. A 

3 flat pin plug is used. 

GOODS AND SERVICES TAX (GST) 

All goods and services purchased in New Zealand are subject to a 15% 

Goods and Services Tax (GST). Visitors are unable to claim back refunds 

on this tax. 

MONEY MATTERS 

Traveller’s cheques are still widely accepted throughout New Zealand 

and can be converted to cash at all major hotels and banks. Travelex 

Cash Passports are becoming popular as an alternative and are also a 

safe and convenient way to allow you to access cash at Automatic Teller 

Machines throughout New Zealand. 

Bank hours are from 9.30am to 4.30pm Mon-Fri. All international 

credit cards are accepted and provided they are encoded with a PIN,

may be used to obtain cash from Automatic Teller Machines throughout 

New Zealand. Check with your bank, whether this facility is available 

to you. It is highly recommended you obtain a small amount of New 

Zealand currency prior to your arrival in New Zealand. 

INCIDENTALS 

We suggest you allow a minimum NZD$35-$50 per day per person for 

incidental cash expenses such as lunch and morning and afternoon tea. 

DUTY FREE 

Purchases up to the value of NZD $700 may be brought into New 

Zealand before incurring tax. Providing you are 18 years of age, you 

can take the following items free of duty and tax: 

• 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco or 50 cigars, or a mixture of 

all three weighing no more than 250 grams 

• 4.5 litres of wine or beer (6 x 750ml bottles of wine / up to 12 cans 

of beer) and one 1125ml bottle of spirit/liqueur 

Returning to Australia, you can bring in: 

• 50 cigarettes or 50 grams of cigars or tobacco products 

• 2.25 litres of alcohol 

If you exceed the AUD $900 total limit of duty free purchases, you 

will be required to pay the applicable tax on all items purchased. Please 

check with your travel agent for your local duty free allowances. 

AGRICULTURAL RESTRICTIONS 

Visitors are not permitted to carry plants, fruit, and some foods into 

New Zealand. All foodstuffs or animal and plant materials must be 

declared. 

TIME ZONES 

Time differences between New Zealand and Australian states: 

• ACT, NSW, VIC, TAS, QLD* - 2 hours behind. 

• NT, SA - 2.5 hours behind. 

• WA - 4 hours behind. 

*QLD is 3 hours behind during daylight savings. 

New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT. During daylight savings in New 

Zealand the time difference is 13 hours.

CLOTHING 

Dress is informal and relaxed on most occasions. Smart casual clothes 

are acceptable at most restaurants. The seasons are more pronounced 

and the weather is more changeable. In summer a jacket and sweater 

should be included in your luggage should the weather turn cooler or 

you visit higher altitudes. You can expect some rain, so also include 

a light rainproof jacket or coat. If visiting between May to September, 

pack warm winter garments and layer your clothing. You will have the 

option to relax and unwind in thermal hot pools so don’t forget to pack 

your swimwear. 

HEALTH INSURANCE 

New Zealand’s public and private medical/hospital facilities provide a 

high standard of treatment and service. However, it is important to note 

that services are not free, except in the case of an accident. It is advised 

that you arrange your own health insurance before leaving home. 

TRAVEL INSURANCE 

Travel Insurance for all travellers is strongly recommended. Please 

speak to your Travel Agent to arrange this. 

CALLING HOME 

YABBA is a prepaid calling card that you can use from almost any 

touch-tone phone making it easy and convenient to pay for your phone 

calls. YABBA offers fantastic calling rates if you need to make a call 

while travelling. You pay as you go, giving you more control over your 

spending. Additional fee may apply if calling from your hotel. 

HOTEL INFORMATION 

As a general rule all hotels used on Grand Pacific Tours will have as 

standard the following room amenities: hair dryers, iron & ironing 

boards, tea & coffee making facilities. Therefore it is not necessary for 

you to carry these items. 

Standard hotel check in time is 2pm. If travellers require immediate 

check in on arrival, a pre tour night will need to be purchased in order 

for this to be guaranteed.

Standard hotel check out time is 11am. If travellers require a late 

check out due to evening flights, day use of the room also needs to be 

purchased to be guaranteed. 

These times can alter depending on the specific hotel. 

INTERNET 

Most hotels now have internet access available. An additional cost 

applies, please ask at the hotel reception. 

SEAT ROTATION 

For the enjoyment of all travellers, Grand Pacific Tours operates a 

daily seat rotation system which all travellers must participate in as a 

condition of booking. Your Coach Captain will have the coach seat plan 

displayed on the coach for your convenience. 

TIPPING 

Providing your Coach Captain or Tour Guide with a tip at the end of 

the tour is at the discretion of the individual traveller. Some tours may 

organise an envelope to be circulated for a group presentation, but any 

contribution is based on individual appreciation and is not mandatory. 

YOUR FEEDBACK IS IMPORTANT 

Included in your documentation wallet is a Tour Questionnaire where we 

ask you to rate the various elements of your tour. As you will be seeing 

and doing so much in a short space of time we suggest that you fill in 

your Questionnaire every couple of days. This Questionnaire is collected 

at the farewell dinner by a Grand Pacific Tours representative. 

WINE TIME 

Relive the day’s highlights with your fellow travellers at Wine Time! Each 

evening, one hour prior to dinner, your hotel will provide a discounted 

drink offer on selected beverages. 

FAREWELL DINNERS 

A farewell dinner is the perfect ending to each Grand Pacific Tour. 

Unfortunately your Coach Captain is generally not able to attend due to 

restrictions on his driving hours. 

OUR NOMINATED CHARITY 

Grand Pacific Tours is an official National Awareness Partner of 

Alzheimer’s Australia. Our contribution is through fund raising and an 

annual financial donation. At the farewell dinner there will be a collection 

tin for any loose change to be donated at your discretion.

THE VINTAGE AVIATOR (M1) 

Visit one of the world’s largest collections of flying, original and 

reproduction WWI aircraft at Hood Aerodrome, Masterton. Take a 

guided tour of the facility and it will bring to life a time when young men 

flew wood & fabric covered aeroplanes into warfare for the very first 

time. Many aircraft types were structurally unsound and pilots were not
