ADVANCED
GRINDING
SOLUTIONS AT
GRINDING HUB
No less than eight of Advanced Grinding
Solutions machine tool Principals are
exhibiting at the forthcoming Grinding Hub
exhibition including Rollomatic in Hall 7
stand C70, Tschudin and HandlingTech in
Hall 9 stand D5, Bahmuller in hall 10 stand
D70, Krebs & Riedel in hall 10 stand E30,
Comat in hall 10 stand B44, Platit in hall 10
stand B30, and FLP in hall 10 stand D07.
Rollomatic will be using the GrindingHub
to show case its latest range of CNC tool
grinding machines, blank prep cylindrical
grinding machines and laser machines for
PCD tooling.
One machine which will be the centre of
attention will be Rollomatics new
GrindSmart®660XW grinding machine
combines, for the first time, the power and
performance of a blank prep cylindrical
grinder with the flexibility of a multi axis tool
grinder to allow for all machining operations
to be carried in in one single automatic
operation on the same machine and in one
clamping. Therefore for the very first time
cutting tools may be machined complete in a
highly efficient single grinding process.
Typical production efficiency from the
traditional multi machine production method
for standard end mills is in the region of 11%
and this is increased to some 82% on the
Rollomatic machine. The new LaserSmart
Femto 510 machine offers cutting speeds of
up to 500% faster than conventional laser
machining. The laser machining process is
superior to any traditional method of
machining super-hard materials such as PCD
and CVD diamond and creates razor-sharp
cutting edges with a radius of under 1μm.
Rollomatic’s ShapeSmart® machines are
designed for grinding tool blanks and are
GRINDING HUB EXHIBITION
based on the method of peel grinding; a
technology invented by Rollomatic. This new
generation of cylindrical grinding machine
has been improved to offer more advantages
for fast setups and superior grinding quality
including both rough and finish grinding in a
single automatic operation for tools up to
25mm in dia. The 4-axis NP30 machine is a
precision pinch and peel grinding machine
for producing cutting tool blanks such as end
mills, drills and stepped tools and can also
grind steps, tapers and radii. For special tools
and punches, Rollomatic’s 5-axis
ShapeSmart®NP50 machine uses a patented
method of peel grinding. This innovative
technique allows the grinding of non-round
shapes such as ellipses, squares, triangles or
hexagons. The grinding machines benefit
from Rollomatic’s industry leading 3-year
unlimited hours, parts and labour warranty
and free-of-charge software updates for life.
For the first time, Tschudin are exhibiting
all three machine types at the same time, thus
underlining the wide range of applications.
Workpieces of the most diverse sizes can be
ground on our machines: from the smallest
wires for medical technology, whose shape
can only be seen under a magnifying glass, to
truck axles weighing 150 kg," reports Iwan
von Rotz, CEO of TSCHUDIN AG. The
product portfolio of the technology leader
founded in 1947 consists of three different
machine types. The compact, centerless
CUBE 350 is the latest innovation. "We
developed this patented three-axis CNC
grinding machine specifically for machining
small workpieces up to 20 mm in diameter.
The CUBE 350 has a small footprint and offers
maximum efficiency “a real all-rounder,"
emphasizes von Rotz. The other two machine
types are the 400 ecoLine / proLine, which is
ideal for machining medium-sized
workpieces with a diameter of up to 150 mm,
and the centerless grinding machines of the
600 ecoLine / proLine, which can also
machine larger workpieces with a diameter of
up to 250 mm and a length of up to 500 mm.
The centerless cylindrical grinding machines
from TSCHUDIN are used in all industries
where mechanical components are required
with high precision and at economical unit
costs - from injection technology, hydraulics,
automotive engineering, drive technology,
the bearing industry, medical technology and
toolmaking to aerospace.
Bahmuller produces internal, external and
combined universal grinding machines of the
very highest precision. Bahmuller is an
industry leading machine tool manufacturer
providing turn-key production solutions for
the high-precision grinding of diesel injection
units, hydraulic, turbo charger, valve train
and other highly precise mass produced
components. For pinion gears Bahmuller has
developed a solution with its Qube machine
to grind both faces, and to also grind and
hone the bore in the same production cell. For
bore grinding Bahmuller offers a variety of
solutions with grinding spindle speeds of up
to 250,000 rpm for grinding bores as small as
0.8mm in diameter. Bores are ground to the
highest precision with roundness and
straightness of 0.1um and surface finishes of
0.3um Rz.
Krebs & Riedel is one of the leading
German grinding wheel manufacturers with
over 250 employees with distributors in 32
countries. The product range includes
conventional internal and external grinding
wheels up to 900mm in diameter
manufactured using aluminium oxide and
silicon carbide with ceramic and synthetic
resin bonds for most industrial grinding
applications. Krebs & Riedel Vitrified
Diamond and CBN grinding wheels with
ceramic bonds have a working speed of up to
200m/s for internal, external and special
grinding processes and new types of wheels
with improved grain structures and novel
bonding systems that optimise performance
are being created. In all Krebs & Riedel have
one of the largest ranges of grinding wheels
available for a huge variety of applications.
Comat manufactures super-filtration
throughout the entire working cycle whilst
minimizing lifetime running costs and
maintaining maximum coolant consistency.
Importantly for end users, the Comat filter
systems use their Intelligent Performance
Technology that allows them to be remotely
monitored in real-time during the
manufacturing processes with customers
filter systems fine-tuned by Comat to ensure
that the optimum filtration quality is obtained
at all times. Furthermore depending upon the
model the Comat filter units can be
monitored, controlled, and optimized by
integrated controls or externally by PCs,
tablets or smart phones. Today, more than
20,000 machine-tools use Comat Filtration
Systems, with more than 120,000,000 litres of
metal working oil being super-filtered every
single day. Comat operate globally and have
a 30-year history in developing the most
advanced filtration systems that are available.
Comat's Superfiltration Technology uses
continuously regenerating filtering media
(diatomaceous earth, cellulose or other
vegetable media), to ensure that particles
larger than ≤ 2-3μm are removed from cutting
fluids and the fluid is maintained at a stable
desired fixed temperature of +/- 0.2 degrees.
Oil cleanliness is measured according to
internationally set and agreed standards such
as the National Aerospace Standard 1638.
Brand new, neat cutting oil is typically
classified in category 9. However with Comat
Superfiltration systems brand new clean oil is
brought down, and then held, to a finer
filtration category of just 7 or 8.
PLATIT are a leading manufacturer of
coating machines using plasma generating
PVD technology. Platit operate on a global
basis and has supplied around 600 coating
installations world-wide into no less than 38
different countries. One of the main
applications for the easy to use plug and play
Platit coating machines is the coating of
cutting tools (usually TiN, TiCN, CrTin, etc).
Sputtered Monoblock Coatings, TiXCo
Nanocomposite coatings, BorAC-ARC Boron
doped AlCrN coatings and SCiL-Coatings
(SputteredCoating induced by LGD) and CCS
(Custom Coating Solutions) are all available.
Profound competencies in cathodic ARC,
SPUTTER, HiPIMS and DLC technology
allows PLATIT to integrate these technologies
into hybrid processes, creating solutions for
different applications. PLATIT's open-source
philosophy allows customers to adapt
coatings to their specific requirements and
individual needs. PLATIT offers turnkey
solutions including de-coating, edge pretreatment,
cleaning, post-treatment and
quality control; making PLATIT systems
ideally suited for seamless integration into
the tool manufacturing and regrinding
process allowing cutting tool manufacturers
to easily and cost efficiently coat their own
tools instead of relying upon expensive and
time consuming subcontract solutions.
FLP Microfinishing is the only company in
Germany to offer the entire range of
industrial fine grinding, lapping and
polishing machines for flat surface finishing
from a single source. The four FLP product
lines are new single and double sided
machines (both standard and full CNC), fully
rebuilt and refurbished machines, the supply
of lapping consumables and tooling, and
finally a large sub-contract lapping facility.
The broad range of FLP fine grinding and
lapping machines includes for both twin
wheel – double sided CNC Lapping
Machines as well as single wheel machines.
Around 25% of FLPs sales are for Fine
Grinding machines that offer 2-3 times the
stock removal of more traditional lapping
machines with 75% of sales being for Lapping
machines that are used where there is a low
stock removal requirement with a mirror
finish and perfect flatness. The fine grinding
process, that uses Diamond or CBN wheels, is
much cleaner than lapping and virtually
eliminates work piece cleanliness issues.
Furthermore, this process is many times
faster than lapping and bridges the gap
between traditional lapping and standard
grinding technologies.
AGS will have staff present throughout
the exhibition to welcome engineers and may
The 2.5XD end mills are supplied with a corner radius from 0.1 to
1.5mm depending upon the diameter selected and the range has a
shank diameter from 4 to 12mm with an overall length from 40 to
70mm with an effective flute length from 2.5 to 20mm. In
comparison, the longer 5XD variant is also offered with 0.1 to 1.5mm
corner rads with shank diameters from 4 to 12mm. However, the 5XD
CrazyMill Cool P&S has an overall length
from 40 to 90mm with a shank neck from 5 to
40mm with an effective flute length of 2 to
16mm. This provides exceptional rigidity
and performance, even when reaching into
the deepest of cavities.
The CrazyMill Cool P&S is manufactured
from a micro-grain carbide that demonstrates
the perfect hardness to toughness ratio. This
robust platform is coated with Mikron Tool’s
eXedur SNP coating technology which is a
high-performance heat and wear-resistant
coating that also assists the chip removal
process. This is complemented by a
customised flute and relief angle design that
combine to demonstrate an extremely stable
cutting-edge angle that prevents the lateral
hooking-up and edge chipping that is often
caused by excess vibration. The enlarged
flute channels create sufficient chip space
clearance whilst maintaining tool strength
and integrity to allow impressive chip
evacuation. The chip evacuation is further
enhanced by the patented coolant channel
ducts whereby 3 to 5 ducts (depending on
shank diameter) provide a constant and
massive coolant stream that flushes chips
from the cutting area to prevent swarf recutting
and over-heating of the cutting edges.
This cooling concept is especially well
adapted for pockets and slots, as chips can be
flushed, even from tight spaces. The coolant
ducts guarantee longer tool life and facilitate
higher chip removal rates when compared to
conventional types of carbide milling cutters
with external coolant supply. If you would
like to find out more about this exceptional
new range of end mills, please contact Floyd
NEW 5-AXIS MACHINING CELL FEATURES
INTEGRATED WORKPIECE LOADING AND UNLOADING
Machining centre manufacturer Brother has
announced that it is now offering its M200X3
5-axis mill-turn model, as well as two other
30-taper machines in its range, with the
factory-fitted option of a robotic workpiece
magazine. Sole sales and service agent for the
UK and Irish markets is Whitehouse Machine
Tools, which has a cell available for
demonstration in its Kenilworth showroom.
Although of standard configuration, the
BV7 stocker is flexible enough to be adapted
to suit a manufacturer's automation needs. It
offers a higher degree of functionality for
loading and unloading individual parts than
a simple cobot, yet avoids the complexity of a
fully-fledged storage and retrieval system for
machine pallets, with its larger space
requirement.
As with all Brother equipment, the
vertically-oriented robotic workpiece stocker
is very compact, occupying a space less than
one metre from either the left or right hand
side of the machine. For holding billets and
machined workpieces, 10 trays measuring up
to 470 x 300 x 135 mm may be easily inserted
and extracted manually, each weighing a
maximum of 25 kg. The tray that is to be
machined next is simply selected by pushbuttons
on the side of the unit. Any number
of components can populate each tray to suit
the requirements of the user.
The integral robot effecting load/unload
of the individual workpieces has four CNC
axes, three rotational and one linear into and
out of the machine via an automatic door. It
carries twin grippers with the end effectors at
right angles to each other. They load and
unload parts into and out of a pneumaticallyor
hydraulically-actuated fixture on the
rotary table, which in turn is mounted on a
swivelling trunnion.
The automation unit is pre-connected to
the machine control, so there is no need for
additional wiring. Programming of the robot
movements is either by a teach pendant or
using PC software running Brother's BASIC
programming language.
ETG INTRODUCES HIGH-SPEED LASER ABLATION SYSTEM
The Engineering Technology Group (ETG) is
pleased to introduce the HSA5-III Laser
Ablation system from the Winbro
Technologies Group. Winbro has installed
over one hundred of their HSA5-III machines
at many of the world’s most advanced
aerospace and land-based gas turbine
manufacturers. The HSA5-III incorporates
the latest design, control and process
concepts to take productivity and
performance to an entirely new level. The
machine includes features specifically
developed for intricate laser processing of
precision forms and features in components
such as blades, vanes and segments in aero
and industrial gas turbines.
The HSA5-III is built upon a robust
fabricated steel base which is welded, stress
relieved and machined.
The fabricated column,
mounted to the rear of
the base, carries the Z-
axis and this is where
the integrated laser
scanning head is
mounted. The X and Y
axes assembly is
mounted on machined
pads at the front of the
base whilst the A and
B-axis rotary/tilt table
is mounted directly to
the X and Y table that is
driven by torque
motors. The spacious
work envelope of 200
by 200 by 250mm in the
X, Y and Z axes is
complemented by a
continuous A-axis and
a B-axis of -135° to
+100°
The Winbro Laser
Ablation process has a
1070nm wavelength Laser that combines
vaporisation and melt erosion of material
from the surface. The HSA5-III machine uses
a fiber laser that delivers anything from 50-
300Watts of average power, pulsing through
a Q-switch for high speed, short pulse width
waveform. A Galvo-Scanning head is used to
move the beam on a pre-programmed tool
path.
The Winbro HSA5-III Laser Ablation
machine is perfect for localised removal of
TBC, reopening of blocked cooling holes and
the processing of 2D and 3D diffuser shapes
in coated or uncoated components. To ensure
ease of use, Winbro has installed a Windowsbased
operating system and the advanced
TUNGALOY’S TUNG-TRI SQUARES UP
TO MINIATURE SHOULDER MILLING
Tungaloy has now launched its latest series
of product lines. The global launch of
ADDFORCE introduces the very latest
cutting tool innovations for improving
customer productivity by accelerating
machining operations. As part of this exciting
new brand launch, Tungaloy has extended
their indexable square shoulder milling
system Tung-Tri with the new size 04 insert.
The 04 size has a 3.5mm cutting edge
length that makes this new arrival
compatible with tool body diameters as small
as 8mm. With the 04 inserts available for tool
bodies from 8 to 25mm diameter, the
extremely small new Tung-Tri 04 insert has a
4mm inscribed circle, yet it delivers the same
benefits of light cutting and long tool life that
existing Tung-Tri inserts have been
providing for manufacturers.
This enables the Tung-Tri 04 to generate
up to double the tooth density when
compared to alternate tools and
subsequently increase feed rates. This
compact configuration enables a 16mm
diameter Tung-Tri 04 cutter to offer four
inserts per cutter whereas the 25mm
diameter cutter can facilitate six teeth. This
insert density is common throughout the
Tung-Tri series, ensuring that all tool body
diameters and insert designations can offer
maximum productivity levels and feed rates
for end users.
Complementing the new compact size 04
inserts are tool bodies for size 06, 10 and 15
inserts. The 06 inserts are suitable for 12 to
50mm diameter tool bodies with 25 to
100mm diameter for the size 10 inserts and 40
to 160mm diameter bodies for the size 15
inserts. This expansive range now ensures
maximum productivity levels for
components that demand high-speed
cutting.
The impressive new Tung-Tri series uses
three-edged inserts that are developed
specifically to deliver precision, productivity
and cost efficiency for shoulder milling
applications. This allows users to choose an
optimal tool setup according to the given
part sizes and the required material removal
volume.
For the high-speed machining of
components that are near-net-shape that
require minimal machining such as additive
manufactured parts and forged or cast
components, the Tung-Tri is the ideal
solution. The cutter also offers an impressive
alternative to face mill cutters when face
milling long reach areas. This is credit to its
wiper edge geometries that create excellent
surface finish, eliminating the need for
secondary processes for high-quality surface
finishes.
As an economical shoulder milling series
with an extensive line-up, Tung-Tri offers
cost-efficient three-edged inserts that have
helical cutting edges with large axial and
radial rake angles. This design generates
extremely low cutting forces making it
suitable for lower powered machines, it also
enhances precision when machining work to
tight tolerances. The inserts are now
available in three different chip former styles.
This includes the general-purpose MJ
geometry, the AJ geometry for non-ferrous
applications and the NMJ with a serratededge
chip splitter for efficient large volume
material removal. The tool bodies are
available in small-diameter cylindrical
shanks, shell styles toolholders or as largediameter
porcupine cutters for roughing
processes. This ensures the new Tung-Tri can
be applied to a diverse range of machining
applications.
www.tungaloy.com/uk
NEW GRADES
FOR ROUGHING
STAINLESS
STEELS
A new generation of grades developed by
Boehlerit for rough-turning stainless steels is
available from Horn under a joint sales
cooperation agreement between the two tool
manufacturers. The high-performance tools
are the result of innovations in carbide
manufacture, insert coating and chip flow.
Their parameters have been finely tuned to
create the new grades BCP10T, BCP15T,
BCP20T and BCP25T.
All grades offer high performance and
reliability throughout the entire turning
process. Designated MRM, a special
chipbreaker with a modified chamfer
suppresses a significant proportion of the
vibration generated by the machining
process and ensures reliable chip flow.
The new aluminium-titanium-nitride
(AlTiN) PVD (physical vapour deposition)
coating is designed to meet the most
demanding temperature and toughness
requirements, while its golden colour allows
wear to be detected. The coating allows the
machining of small diameter components, as
it is capable of operating at low cutting
speeds. It is also suitable for turning when
the tool is required to enter the material
frequently.
With the new MRM chipbreaker,
Boehlerit has extended its ISO turning
portfolio for medium to heavy roughing of
stainless steels and can now offer the perfect
indexable insert geometry for virtually any
application. The chipbreaker is an extension
of the established BMRS geometry. Although
the feed rate ranges are similar, MRM boasts
a deeper rake angle, resulting in significant
differences in micro-geometry. The
development reduces the cutting force,
increases process safety and extends cutter
life when machining hard stainless steels.
MEASUREMENT & INSPECTION
TORQSENSE TRANSDUCERS HELP TO GUARANTEE
VALVE ACTUATOR PERFORMANCE
Rotork Controls has established a global
reputation for robust and reliable valve
actuators, operating in some of the world’s
most demanding and critical applications.
Thorough testing of the motors used in the
actuators is one of the keys to this assured
performance, with TorqSense transducers
from Sensor Technology playing a vital role
in the test process.
Rotork is the world’s leading
manufacturer of electric, pneumatic and
hydraulic valve actuators and associated
control systems, valve gearboxes and valve
accessories. The company’s electric valve
actuator division offers an electrical solution
to industrial valve control and actuation
applications of virtually any size, description
and complexity.
Its capabilities encompass actuators and
control systems for new plants, plant
extensions and upgrades, together with lifeof-plant
support. The division’s unrivalled
range of products offers a robust and
economic solution for every valve duty and
operating environment.
Rotork Controls chief development
engineer Geoff Beeho comments: “If you look
at something like an oil line, then any failure
of the valve actuator could potentially be
costing millions of dollars a day. We have to
be able to guarantee the performance of the
actuators in the most demanding conditions,
so testing is vital. TorqSense torque
transducers from Sensor Technology are a
key element of our test rigs.”
Companies and businesses around the
world rely on Rotork actuators, in
applications as diverse as power generation,
water and sewage, industrial processes,
subsea, marine, HVAC, incinerators and
cement plants. Common features in many of
these applications are challenging
environmental conditions, extremes of
temperatures, and high costs associated with
any downtime. Because of this, absolute
reliability of the valve actuators is vital.
Rotork Controls designs custom actuator
designs built around motorised gearboxes,
using non-standard open frame motors. “We
use a variety of motors depending on the
particular application, including DC motors,
single-phase motors and three-phase motors,
but we don’t rely on off-the-shelf products.
Instead, we use open frame motors that we
integrate directly into our own systems.
“Performance testing is very important,”
he continues. “The duty cycle is atypical –
our motors are not in continuous use, only
running intermittently and for short period.
What is important to us is the short term
ratings, and this data isn’t always readily
available. We have to have performance data
that will tell us exactly what we need to
know about the motors in these most
demanding applications.”
Rotork Controls designed its own rig to
test the motors, with Sensor Technology
TorqSense transducers at its heart. “We
needed non-contact torque sensors in the rig.
The early design used magnetically coupled
torque sensors but we were never completely
happy with these. So when we upgraded the
rig to be able to perform a wider range of
tests, we took the opportunity to look around
the market and we found the TorqSense
transducers.”
“The TorqSense transducers immediately
struck us as being a much more robust
solution, better suited to handling the
torques we were subjecting them to,”
comments Beeho.
The common practices of over-specifying
a motor that guarantee reliable operation in
standard applications simply don’t apply in
valve actuation. “Motor sizing is critical,”
says Beeho. “If we put in a motor that is too
big, then we can risk damaging the valve. We
can use motors that appear to be under-rated,
but because our duty-cycle is so short we can
get better performance from the motor. But
the performance data to support this sort of
motor use isn’t always available, or isn’t
always reliable, so we need to perform our
own tests. We also need to know how our
motors will handle extremes of temperature
in given applications so that reliability is
never compromised. The TorqSense
transducers allow us to make all the required
tests.”
An advantage of the TorqSense
transducers in the Rotork test rig is that they
provide both analogue and digital outputs.
“This has proved to be a real bonus,” says
Beeho. “Not only can we use one output to
check the calibration of the other, but it also
means we have the flexibility to use both
outputs performing different tests. For
example, we might use the analogue output
to feed torque and speed data into the power
analyser during a performance test, and then
use the digital output for a temperature test.
Here, we run the motor for 15 minutes at
constant torque and see how hot it gets. The
output from the TorqSense transducer allows
us to close the loop so that we can keep the
torque constant.”
In any application, the fundamental
considerations are the actuator’s ability to
overcome the resistive forces of the valve,
and the dynamic performance requirements
to enable the valve to adequately meet the
process demands. With its comprehensive
testing procedures built around the
TorqSense transducers, Rotork Controls has
the confidence that its electrically operated
valve actuators will always meet the
application requirements.
FANUC CELEBRATES MACH RETURN WITH NINE
LIVE ON-STAND DEMONSTRATIONS
Demonstrating that the demand for inperson
events has well and truly returned,
robotics and automation specialist FANUC
UK enjoyed a successful five days at MACH
2022 earlier this month, featuring no less
than NINE live on-stand machine
demonstrations.
Held at the Birmingham NEC on 4-8
April 2022, FANUC’s on-stand displays
highlighted to end-users and machine
builders alike the strength and breadth of
the company’s automation offering,
showcasing welding technology,
collaborative robotics and laser processing
solutions across the full factory line.
FANUC was joined on Stand 130 by
several of its system integrator partners,
including Cyber-Weld who have partnered
with FANUC to create the Cyber-Mate.
Incorporating FANUC’s CRX collaborative
robot with a non-contact, laser-guided,
smart camera, it uses adaptive technology to
automatically adjust the welding head to
improve weld quality and reduce
production costs for automated welding
applications. Housed in a compact, movable
trolley featuring a handy tabletop, it enables
users to start welding from the day of
delivery, as FANUC’s Paul Coombes
explained: “Cyber-Mate’s strength is in its
ease of deployment. Using tabletop clamps,
users can quickly run off a batch of parts,
change the jig, and repurpose the trolley for
other welding tasks.”
Also on display was the Flexlase laser
processing machine, produced in
conjunction with Cyan-Tec, which can cut or
weld using a wide range of different laser
sources such as laser processing optics, laser
power and component fixturing. Another
demonstration machine was FANUC’s
QSSR (Quick and Simple Start-up of
Robotisation) package, which creates a
standard interface to facilitate the
connection of a robot to a machine tool,
simplifying set-up and subsequent
operation.
Ray Timberlake, FANUC UK Sales
Manager, said: “QSSR uses a two-path
control, the first controlling the machine
and the second controlling the robot.
Typically, a machine tool builder will use G-
code, the most widely used ISO computer
numerical control programming language,
to control movement, while the robot has
always used its own language. With QSSR,
we use G-code to control the robot as well,
so there is no learning curve for the
operator. This set-up is aimed at machine
builders who want to easily offer added
robotics functions to their machines.”
FANUC UK Managing Director Tom
Bouchier commented: “It was great to be
back at MACH again after a two-year
hiatus, and to see the industry pulling
together. We were pleasantly surprised by
the footfall and the quality of the enquiries
we received this time was much higher than
at previous shows. It’s clear that UK firms
are really waking up to the power of
automation.”
DUGARD
TAKES ORDERS
MACH 2022 proved a resounding success for
Dugard Machine Tools with the South Coast
company winning several orders and taking
an unprecedented number of enquiries at the
show. With four new machine tools on its
stand, the crowds were certainly impressed
by the breadth and diversity of the
technology on show.
It was a MACH debut and the first
opportunity for Dugard to introduce the
Kitamura range since being announced as the
UK agents. To highlight the quality, speed
and productivity of the renowned brand,
Dugard demonstrated the MedCenter5AX 5-
axis vertical machining centre for fast precise
machining. Complementing the
MedCenter5AX from the milling stable was
the larger Kitamura Mytrunnion 4G
machining centre. The two machines
highlighted just how expansive the Dugard
milling range is - not only sparking the
imagination of show visitors but also led
engineers to enquire as to what else Dugard
has available in its armoury.
The Kitamura MedCenter5AX 5-axis
vertical machining centre took centre stage
and with a 30 to 30,000rpm spindle, an HSK-
E40 spindle taper with a tool ATC that can
change tools in just 1.5 seconds, rapid
traverse rates of 60m/min and table rotation
of 200rpm on the A and C-axis and a pallet
change system – the machine highlighted its
class-leading credentials at the show. What
also blew visitors away was the 67 million
pulse encoder technology, the positional
accuracy of ±2 microns across the full stroke
and the repeatability of ±1micron – all factors
that make it one of the most accurate
machines on the market. The Mytrunnion 4G
with equally impressive characteristics and a
larger work envelope, were two centre points
of the stand. As well as these two highly
productive and flexible workhorses, Dugard
gave a MACH show debut to the Hanwha
brand of sliding head lathe that has taken the
market by storm since entering the UK just
over two years ago. Presenting the robust
Hanwha XE20 and XD26II-V, the turned
parts community certainly paid attention to
these newcomers.
Commenting upon the MACH show,
Dugard’s Sales Director, Colin Thomson
says: “We had representatives from Hanwha,
Kitamura, Ibarmia and SMEC on the stand to
support the Dugard team and throughout the
week both our UK sales and technical teams
and our technical partners from overseas had
some very constructive conversations that
resulted in several machine sales. Equally
encouraging is the level of interest and
direction that some of these meetings took at
MACH, we fully expect to generate several
additional sales in the months following the
show.”
“Aside from the success Dugard enjoyed
at MACH, and the subsequent success that
will follow, it was a pleasure to be back at
MACH on a human level. Having face to face
meetings with colleagues, friends,
technology partners and even competitors
after the challenges of the pandemic was a
genuine delight. No level of marketing
activity can exceed the anticipation and buzz
that MACH creates in the marketplace. It was
great to be back and we are already planning
a larger stand space for MACH 2024,”
concludes Colin.
NEW LINES
GRAB VISITOR
ATTENTION
The return of the MACH exhibition provided
a welcome boost to the industry, and as a
leading UK manufacturer of cutting tools,
Industrial Tooling Corporation (ITC)
revelled in the opportunity to demonstrate
all its latest innovations to an audience that
was ‘chomping at the bit’ to get their hands
on all the new technology.
MACH was the first opportunity for
manufacturers to investigate all the new
product lines and have face-to-face
discussions with experts in a large scale
exhibition environment. For ITC, its cutting
tool experts certainly noticed a renewed
vigour from engineers visiting the show and
their appetite to learn more and invest in the
very latest cutting tool technologies.
Commenting upon the event, ITC Director
Georgia Graves said: “Opportunities to have
face-to-face meetings with the industry have
been limited by Covid for too long. The
timing of MACH has been perfect and our
team of cutting tool experts has certainly
witnessed their busiest MACH exhibition to
date. The combination of limited contact with
customers, potential customers and
technology partners, and the build-up of
countless new product lines that had yet to
be seen by much of the industry were factors
that created a huge wave of interest in all of
the new technologies developed by ITC as
well as our partners WIDIA, BIG KAISER,
Kemmler and Bass. We are delighted with
the lead generation and enquiry level from
the show.”
With an outstanding reputation for the
quality, consistency and performance of its
solid carbide end mills, drills and thread
milling ranges; ITC engineers had a
particularly busy event. One of the new ITC
products that gathered immense interest was
the 6054 Series of end mill developed
specifically for the machining of steel and
exotic material types. The geometry of the
6054 Series has a centre cutting geometry
with harmonic fluting to maximise material
removal rates and swarf evacuation whilst
minimising vibration to enhance surface
finishes and tool life. This chip evacuation is
further enhanced by extremely efficient chip
breakers. The 6-flute series 6054 Series is
available with diameter options of 6, 8, 10, 12,
16 and 20mm with a length of cut from 18mm
on the 6mm diameter tool through to 60mm
on the 20mm diameter end mills.
With a team of WIDIA experts at MACH,
the indexable insert line from this globally
renowned brand was also extremely popular
at the show. Of particular interest was the
new WIDIA M1600 face mill series that
received its MACH debut. Also proving to be
a crowd-pleaser alongside the M1600 was the
impressive M8065HD milling system for
machining steel and cast-iron materials.
Designed with eight cutting edges and extrawide
chip gashes, the new M8065HD can
achieve unfathomable depths of cut while
producing high metal removal rates during
face and shoulder milling applications. ITC
has an unparalleled line of solid carbide and
indexable drills in its armoury, and at
MACH, this was evident with the expanded
range of indexable inserts added to the Widia
TOP DRILL TDMX modular drilling line.
This expanded series was the perfect
complement to the Tamworth
manufacturers' ITC solid carbide drilling
lines.
From the BIG KAISER stable, ITC
introduced the expanded line-up of Smart
Damper-equipped, arbour-style face mill
holders that support face mills with
diameters of 80mm or 100mm with an arbour
pilot diameter of 27mm. The Model SDF57
assembly has an outside diameter of 71.8mm
and allows users of 75mm face mills to access
up to 500mm of reach, the longest tool
assembly in the industry using standard
components. Also from BIG KAISER was the
Mega Synchro Tapping Chuck. The
innovative new tapping chuck has a special
function built-in to compensate for
synchronisation errors that may occur during
rigid tapping.
For engineers that didn’t get the
opportunity to attend MACH 2022, ITC
would be delighted to update manufacturers
on all the latest innovations that set the halls
of the NEC alight with enthusiasm in April.
BEST MACH
EVER!
Recognised as the industry’s leading
CAM/CAD system for everything from 3-
axis to complex 5-axis machining, OPEN
MIND Technologies demonstrated exactly
why at MACH 2022 with its latest
hyperMILL® Version 2022.1. As expected,
the crowds on the OPEN MIND stand
throughout MACH week far exceeded that of
its rivals – and it was no wonder with the
level of innovations in the latest version of
hyperMILL® highlighting why this CAM
system is light years ahead of its competition.
Commenting upon the MACH show,
OPEN MIND UK’s Sales Director Ken
Baldwin beamed: “We almost received too
many leads to deal with! The show was the
best MACH we have ever done and out of
the hundreds of leads we received, there are
upward of 70 companies that want to
purchase hyperMILL® straight away. We
had six demonstration pods on our stand and
the team was extremely busy all week with
queues for demonstrations every day.”
“MACH 2022 really was a tipping point
for the OPEN MIND brand in the UK. We
have been building the brand and the
technology has been edging further beyond
the realms of our competitors for some years;
but at MACH, the visitors were purposely
seeking us out. Our visitors were a
combination of businesses that had
recommendations to buy hyperMILL® from
customers, suppliers, colleagues and the
machine tool companies that were fellow
exhibitors at MACH. With MACH being the
first major UK show since the pandemic,
visitors came with an intent to buy – and for
those companies investing in new
machinery, they were subsequently directed
to our stand by the machine tool suppliers.
This exemplifies not just our relationship
with the machine tool vendors, but also the
ability of hyperMILL® to help engineers get
the most out of their machine tools. Over the
next couple of weeks, our team will be
collecting orders from stand visitors that
were immediately sold on hyperMILL®
whilst other manufacturers are keen to step
away from existing CAD/CAM suppliers
and move to OPEN MIND. MACH 2022 was
a resounding success and our team will be
busy for months after such a successful
show.”
The latest edition of hyperMILL®,
Version 2022.1 is packed with an abundance
of innovations for enhancing productivity,
performance and programming times for
components produced on machining centres
– but this latest version also incorporates a
wealth of new features for its turning cycles.
It is for this reason, so many show visitors
made a beeline for the OPEN MIND stand at
MACH.
In hyperMILL® Version 2022.1, the
company presented two new feature types
that make turning processes much easier and
faster – enhancing its reputation in the field
of turned parts. OPEN MIND also
showcased its automated program
generation potential with the hyperMILL®
AUTOMATION Center. The hyperMILL®
AUTOMATION Center allows users to
automate the job list creation process as well
as the selection and positioning of clamping
devices.
With something for everyone, OPEN
MIND also presented product enhancements
for manufacturers utilising EDM technology.
This is a credit to the simple creation and
subsequent modification of traverse paths
during the EDM process with hyperCAD®-S
Electrode. For the additive manufacturing
sector, OPEN MIND has further enhanced its
hyperMILL® ADDITIVE Manufacturing
solution and the latest version opens up an
array of flexible options for Directed Energy
Deposition processes (DED) and Wire Arc
Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) in terms
of highly complex 5-axis simultaneous
processing. hyperMILL® also allows the
potential of additive manufacturing to be
truly exploited using Powder Bed Fusion
(PBF). With such a remarkable diversity of
solutions, it was no wonder that MACH 2022
was such a success.
LOOK BACK AT
GUHRING CUTS THROUGH CROWDS WITH QUALITY
MACH 2022 was a phenomenal success for
cutting tool manufacturer Guhring with its
stand being busy from the very start of the
show to the point when the last visitors were
leaving on Friday afternoon. The stand was
hectic from the word go for several reasons.
Firstly, Guhring demonstrated a complete
range of products at MACH that included
threading, turning, drilling and milling tools
– many of which received their UK exhibition
premiere at the show. The other reason the
stand drew the crowds was due to the
exceptional performance of the tools that
were demonstrated ‘live’ on a Grob 5-axis
machining centre.
With an unfathomable milling portfolio,
Guhring gave a MACH show debut to the
impressive new RF100 Sharp Series of highperformance
end mills that were put through
their paces on the Grob machine. Designed to
address the issue of machining soft, tough
and high-alloyed materials that create an
issue with swarf clearance, the new RF100
Sharp Series is Guhring’s sharpest solid
carbide milling tool to date. Alongside the
Sharp was the Diver Series of end mills that
Guhring recently extended for
micromachining with the new RF100 Micro
Diver. Another crowd-pleaser was the RF100
5-Speed and RF100 7-Speed solid carbide end
mills. Developed for the machining tough
materials, the RF100 5-Speed and RF100 7-
Speed solid carbide end mills are part of the
highly dynamic Guhring Trochoidal Cutting
(GTC) series that made an impact with stand
visitors at the show.
The drilling line from Guhring stood head
and shoulders above its rivals. As a worldleading
manufacturer in the drilling and
reaming arena, Guhring had its holemaking
ranges performing on the Grob machining
centre at MACH. With many of its industryleading
drilling lines undertaking ‘live
cutting’ demonstrations, it was the RT 100T
solid carbide spiral flute deep-hole drills that
captured the imagination of engineers at the
show.
Commenting upon the exhibition,
Guhring UK Managing Director, Chris
Weston said: “Before MACH, expectations
may have been somewhat subdued due to
the unpredictable Covid situation, but that
dissipated on day one with a very high
number of enquiries – and this continued to
surge throughout the week to give us our
busiest MACH week ever. The enquiries we
received were well balanced across our
portfolio of products. We had technical
engineers giving demonstrations of our
vending solutions all week whilst the Grob
G550 5-axis machine provided live demos of
our deep hole drilling line and the new
Sharp end mills to name a few. We have
always alluded to the performance of our
industry-leading lines that can achieve
cutting parameters beyond alternate lines.
This is especially true of our deep hole
drilling range – but it wasn’t until engineers
watched it on the Grob machine that they
believed it.”
“It was the first time for Guhring to have
a machining centre on the MACH stand to
demonstrate products, and it worked
extremely well. We had a crowd around the
machine all week, paying close attention to
the jaw-dropping performance of our tools.
We are also delighted to announce that our
cooperation with Grob at MACH was just the
first step in a long-term partnership that has
now seen Guhring UK take the impressive 5-
axis machine that straddled both stands at
MACH straight to the Guhring technical
centre in Birmingham. Arriving at Guhring
UK immediately after the show, the machine
will cement our relationship and enable us to
provide comprehensive demonstrations of
our product lines on an extremely capable 5-
axis machining centre. It will also serve as a
facility for Grob to invite its customers to
undertake machining trials,” concludes
Chris.
Guhring engineers were also busy at
MACH discussing the scope of special
tooling solutions that can be designed,
developed, manufactured and trialled at the
Guhring facility in Birmingham. Guhring UK
has a team of expert engineers that can create
productivity, cost, inventory and cycle time
savings for UK manufacturers – the fact that
products can be manufactured in the UK to
customer specifications on short lead times
was undoubtedly an attractive proposition to
MACH visitors.
CURTAIN COMES
DOWN ON
SUCCESSFUL
MACH FOR KERF
The return to the MACH exhibition proved
to be a resounding success for Kerf
Developments. The technological leap and
the steps forward that Kerf has taken since
the last MACH show were evident for
visitors, customers and even competitors to
see at the showpiece manufacturing event.
Recognised as the industry leader in
waterjet, plasma and oxy-fuel cutting
technology, Kerf presented a dynamic mix of
cost-efficient high technology cutting
solutions that grabbed the attention and
imagination of show visitors – but more
importantly for Kerf, they witnessed record
enquiry levels and even two machine orders
at MACH.
Commenting upon the success of the
show, Sales Director Craig Walsh says:
“Visitor numbers were consistently high
throughout the week and of a good standard.
There were certainly manufacturers looking
to invest in the latest productivity tools and
this resulted in two machine sales at the
show with many more manufacturers
planning to place orders in the coming
weeks.”
At MACH, the market-leading RUR2500P
high definition plasma cutting machine
created a spark of attraction for show visitors
with its UltraSharp cutting technology that
has been enhanced with new advanced
technologies. Additionally, Kerf introduced
the new Fineline 300 Plasma unit from
Lincoln Electric that incorporates Advanced
Piercing Technology and a new Watermist
system – the technology built into this new
unit genuinely blew customers away and the
enquiry levels by the end of the MACH week
were unprecedented.
As Craig adds: “Laser users showed
considerable interest in the latest stainless
steel and aluminium water mist process.
They were also very impressed with the cut
quality that UltraSharp could achieve on
mild steel and demonstrating this created a
huge level of enquiries. This was particularly
so on thicker applications from 10mm
through to 50mm where some laser processes
appear to start to lose edge quality.”
From a technology standpoint, the
FineLine 300HD has the smallest diameter
300A torch in the industry at 38mm and it
works in synergy with the UltraSharp 2.0
plasma current controls that are all
synchronised to precisely control motion, gas
flow, cut speeds and height control.
Company directors and business owners
acknowledged the merits of this system and
there was also a lot of interest in the ‘MACH
special’ Linc-Cut machine package that
demonstrated its flexibility and capability
that is packed into a compact footprint that
makes it ideal for smaller workshops.
The show debut for the new Optima
waterjet cutting machine allowed Kerf to use
MACH to really set its stall out in the
waterjet segment – and show visitors proved
suitably impressed. “Waterjet cutting live at
MACH generated a lot of interest. Visitors
were impressed by the wide range of
materials that the process can cut and the
excellent cut quality that we can achieve with
the Optima machine,” continues Craig.
As the most flexible machine available
from Kerf, the new Optima can cut a broad
range of materials from granite and stone
through to titanium, inconel, duplex, super
duplex, tool steel, composites, acrylic,
polycarbonate and much more. The Optima
216 at MACH drew attention from
manufacturers undertaking one-off and
general jobbing work through to batch
production. The extraordinary level of
enquiries will certainly keep the Kerf team
busy in the post-MACH months.
FLOYD DEMOS LIGHT-UP MACH
With two sliding head machines on its stand
at MACH 2022, visitors to the Floyd
Automatic Tooling stand enjoyed witnessing
the diversity of the Floyd product range as
well as the ability of the portfolio to deliver
productivity benefits. The Star SR-32J and
Citizen L12 machines were fully tooled-up
whilst machines on both the Star and Citizen
stands were demonstrating the extensive
portfolio available from Floyd Automatic –
this demonstrated the synergy with the
machine tool manufacturers.
The two machines drew a record enquiry
level and an unprecedented level of interest
in both the ‘live demos’ and the static
displays of established and new product
lines. Not only did the ‘live demos’ create a
stir, but Floyd Automatic also gave MACH
debuts to the Swiss cutting tool brand
Denitool and the German JBO brand – both
drawing significant interest at the show. The
JBO range expands the Floyd portfolio of
high-quality thread milling cutters, shell type
thread milling tools, threading dies,
combination tools and precision thread
gauges – and stand visitors were thoroughly
impressed with the quality and diversity of
the range.
Commenting upon this, Floyd
Automatic’s Managing Director, Mr Richard
Floyd said: “MACH was once again a huge
success for us. After a four year absence of
the MACH exhibition from our calendars,
this show was all about re-connecting with
customers new and old and demonstrating
many of the innovations we have to offer.
The show visitors were certainly upbeat,
enthusiastic and keen to investigate new
technologies. We would also like to thank
both Star and Citizen for loaning us machines
for the exhibition. The synergy we have with
these leading brands was evident as stand
visitors were intent on learning more about
the technology we offer and how it works
with the industry’s leading sliding head
turning centres.”
“From a product perspective,
incorporating the Denitool and JBO brands
into our offering drew significant interest at
MACH. Likewise, the SRS range of collet
clamping heads from Schaublin and the
Quick-Change Tool Systems from Swiss
Tools were very well received, and having
technical support from Schaublin at MACH
undoubtedly enabled us to promote the
merits of this technology, especially on turret
type machines. Other notable products of
major interest were the new SWITCH-Line
Series of interchangeable turning tools from
Applitec and the Microconic over-grip collets
from MASA tools. We also had Mikron Tool
on the stand next to us, so experts from their
team were also available to support us with
technical enquiries. The support of our
technical partners and the ability to
demonstrate the innovations on Star and
Citizen machines were major contributors to
our success at MACH. Our reputation as the
‘go-to’ company in the sliding head tooling
segment was also more prominent than ever
before with more companies coming to our
stand following recommendations from
fellow exhibitors.”
Also pulling interest at MACH was the
FLO-Tool Series of collet holders for small
part machining, the Mowidec spindle
centring system that enables manufacturers
to reduce set-up times and save on tooling
costs and the Hirt Line series of flexible
stainless-steel coolant hoses and adaptors.
Complemented by the HEB Miniplug highpressure
coolant connection system for
tooling blocks with a through coolant facility,
the HEB Miniplug and Hirt Line catered for
all visitors’ cutting fluid supply
requirements.
VOLLMER
CONNECTS WITH
MACH VISITORS
The pace of development at VOLLMER is a
sight to behold, and for UK industry
engineers that have missed the chance to
investigate the latest technology due to
Covid – MACH certainly proved the location
to re-connect.
At the EMO Show last autumn, VOLLMER
introduced the new VGrind 360S grinding
machine as well as other new technologies.
MACH 2022 was the UK exhibition premiere
of the new VGrind 360S - and it certainly
drew the attention of show visitors.
The new VGrind 360S grinding machine
for the complete machining of carbide rotary
tools appeared alongside the VOLLMER
CHX/HS and the Loroch Powerstar
machines for sharpening circular saw blades,
and all machines warranted their position on
the stand with several machine sales and a
high number of enquiries from UK
manufacturers of rotary carbide and PCD
cutting tools and circular saw blades. For
engineers that didn’t get a chance to visit
MACH, VOLLMER has a real treat at the
forthcoming GrindingHub show in May – no
fewer than five new machine tools will
receive their world premiere launches at the
inaugural European grinding exhibition.
Commenting upon the MACH 2022
exhibition, VOLLMER UK Managing
Director, Mr Peter Allen says: “There was a
lot of scepticism in the run-up to MACH after
Brexit and Covid having an impact on the
industry, but we made the commitment to
exhibit and we are delighted that we did. It
wasn’t just a great opportunity to
demonstrate our latest technology, it was
fantastic to interact with both new and
existing customers. The return of face-to-face
meetings with our customers and the wider
industry as well as having the stage to
showcase our latest technology was
invaluable.“
“It was also a great opportunity to listen
to UK industry engineers, not only regarding
their journey through the pandemic and
Brexit but also to get a greater understanding
of the industry’s evolving requirements.
Taking the opportunity to listen to
manufacturers at MACH is critical to the
success of VOLLMER and the ongoing
development of our product lines and
innovations. Our industry-leading R&D
experts are always paying close attention to
the requirements of the marketplace;
Industry 4.0, connectivity and the increasing
costs of energy were subjects raised on
numerous occasions at MACH. We already
lead the way in these fields, but at the
GrindingHub show in May, our next
generation of advanced technologies will
really set the VOLLMER brand apart from its
rivals in these areas.“
GM EMERGES
AS THE VICTOR
AT MACH
The debut appearance of the GM Group at
MACH could only be described as a
resounding success. Since becoming the sole
UK agent for the Victor range just two years
ago, the GM Group has witnessed
unfathomable growth with the brand, and
MACH was the perfect opportunity to
present the merits of the Victor machines
against its rivals. Anyone that has ever
bought a Victor machine can guess what
show visitors said about the range in
comparison to other machines at MACH –
the Victor is better built, more sturdy, rigid
and robust with in-built technology that
leaves other brands way behind.
The GM Group presented the Victor
Vturn-A20YCM and the Vturn-S26/60CM
single spindle turning centres as well as the
compact Vcenter-P76 machining centre – all
three were extremely well received with
several machine sales and some very serious
enquiries being taken for all three machines.
Equally encouraging was that stand visitors
appreciated the built quality, technology and
merits of buying a Victor machine – the team
will certainly have a busy couple of months
following-up all the very serious enquiries
that were made at the show.
Commenting upon the debut appearance
at MACH, GM Group Director, Nicola
Howard said: “As a first time MACH
exhibitor, we didn’t necessarily expect to sell
machines off the stand – but we did! The
Victor brand has been well respected in
machine shops nationwide for decades due
to its build quality and longevity, and the
feedback we repeatedly had from show
visitors is how delighted they were to see the
re-emergence of the Victor brand in the UK.
Our attendance at MACH has certainly
elevated the Victor profile and this event
may have helped awaken a sleeping giant.
We had so many visitors show their delight
that Victor machines are being sold once
again in the UK with a proactive business
that has a complete service, spares and
support structure with a new showroom and
training facility under construction. We’ll
definitely be re-booking for MACH 2024 as
this show has given us a debut to
remember.”
The machines on show were just a
snapshot of what is available from the GM
Group and the extremely diverse and
powerful solutions cater for all industry
sectors with solutions that can be tailored to
the exact needs of the user – this was
certainly acknowledged at the exhibition.
The new facility due to open later this
year will incorporate a brand new showroom
space for Victor machine tools as well as a
selection of used modern CNC &
conventional equipment. The ultra modern
factory will also incorporate a training area,
new open-plan office facilities, a new
reception area and meeting rooms. So, if you
didn’t get the opportunity to visit the GM
Group at MACH, please do contact the team
to arrange a visit to the new facility where
you can see all the very latest technology and
witness first-hand, the commitment to
customer service and support.
CASE STUDY
DRAG FINISHING POLISHES TARGETED SURFACE
AREAS ON HIP STEMS
Lower costs, improved quality and
absolutely consistent finishing results To
ensure the optimal function of artificial hips
in a patient’s body, certain surface areas on
the hip stem must have different finishes.
For example, the neck area of the stems
requires a very smooth, polished surface.
Recently, a manufacturer of precision
components replaced a combined manual
grinding / electropolishing operation with a
fully automated two-stage mass finishing
process.
The drag finisher R 4/700 SF from Rösler
allows the simultaneous, precise finishing of
twelve hip stems in one single operation.
This resulted not only in significant cost
savings and lower cycle times but also in a
drastically improved quality and absolutely
consistent finishing results.
Since 20 years, the MBN
Präzisionstechnik GmbH, located in the
Austrian town of Pottendorf, has been
specializing in the manufacture of machined
precision components and assemblies.
The company’s main focus is on the
production of orthopedic implants and
surgical instruments made from titanium
and stainless steel.
MBN Präzisionstechnik, certified
according to DIN 13485, is not only equipped
with ultra-modern machinery, including
laser marking systems, but has also clean
rooms for the coating and germ- free
packaging of its products.
A particular challenge: Finishing of
targeted surface areas on different hip stems
The production is to a large extent automated
and allows tracing the entire manufacturing
chain, from the raw material to the finished
product.
Until recently polishing of the neck area
of the hip stems took place by a manual preand
fine-grinding step, followed by an
electropolishing process.
This surface refinement operation was
time-consuming, required a lot of manpower
and was very costly.
In addition, it was less than perfect with
regard to consistency of the finishing results
and general sustainability.
Therefore, Thomas Müllner, general
manager at MBN Präzisionstechnik GmbH,
had been looking for an automated
alternative for quite some time.
He explains: ”Since only a precisely
defined surface area must be polished, and a
variety of different hip stem shafts must be
processed, automating the surface finishing
process turned out to be quite challenging.
First processing trials were undertaken by
a supplier competing with Rösler.
However, the results did not meet our
quality standards.” An application for the
drag finishing technology Based on the
recommendation of one of MBN’s customers
further processing trials were conducted by
the Rösler sales branch in Austria.
This company is not only located nearby
but also maintains a combined test and
service center.
The Rösler experts decided to run the
processing trials in a drag finisher.
This unique mass finishing system allows
the precise and targeted surface finishing of
high-value work pieces with complex shapes.
Once the process parameters have been
established, the process runs without any
variations, thus ensuring absolutely
repeatable finishing results.
Thomas Müllner remembers: ”Rösler’s
comprehensive know-how and experience
from the job shop operation helped to
quickly develop a two-stage process with the
drag finishing technology.
The process, consisting of a wet grinding
/ pre- polishing step, followed by a dry
polishing stage, produces a consistently high
quality in surprisingly short cycle times”.
A major feature of the Rösler drag
finishing technology is no doubt the
vibratory motor mounted below the
processing bowl.
”The vibration of the processing bowl
ensures the optimal mixing of the processing
media.
This results in the absolutely
homogeneous finishing of all relevant
surface areas on the hip stems”, concludes
the general manager.
Fully automatic drag finishing operation
with two processing bowls In the end, MBN
Präzisionstechnik chose a compact drag
finisher, model R 4/700 SF.
This plug-and-play machine consists of a
processing bowl with a diameter of 700 mm
and a carousel with four rotating working
spindles, each spindle allowing the mounting
of three work pieces.
The carousel and rotating spindles are
equipped with separate drive systems so that
the carousel and spindle speeds can be set
independently from each other.
The drag finishing machine is furnished
with a second processing bowl.
With a lift truck the two bowls can be
easily and quickly exchanged.
Prior to the grinding operation the surface
areas on the hip stems requiring no finish are
masked.
Then the implants are manually mounted
to special work piece fixtures.
”For this purpose we developed a
clamping device that can be used for all stem
types and sizes”, explains Thomas Müllner.
The work piece fixtures with attached hip
stems are then attached to the working
spindles.
Once the respective processing program,
stored in the programmable system controls,
has started, the carousel is lowered so that
the rotating spindles are immersed in the
processing media.
For the wet grinding process a mix of
plastic media with different geometric
shapes and a special compound are utilized.
Carousel and spindles are rotating at the
pre-defined speed in opposite rotational
directions.
After about half of the cycle time –
amounting to less than one hour – the
rotational direction is normally reversed.
This ensures that the neck area of the hip
stems receives an all- around perfect
homogeneous finish.
For cleaning of the process water from the
wet grinding process, MBN
Präzisionstechnik purchased a semiautomatic
Rösler centrifugal process water
recycling system, model Z 800.
Recycling of the process water protects
the environment and helps to significantly
reduce the finishing costs.
For the polishing operation a plant-based
dry polishing media is utilized.
For this process stage, requiring a cycle
time of well under 20 minutes, the processing
bowl containing the finishing media is
simply exchanged with the bowl filled with
polishing media.
Thomas Müllner concludes: ”With the
automatic drag finishing process we could
significantly improve the quality and
consistency of the finishing results.
At the same time, compared to our
previous finishing operation, the costs for
grinding and polishing of the hip stem neck
could be reduced by two thirds.
Therefore, this investment will be
amortized within a three year period”.
PROVIDING
POWERFUL
DATA TO DRIVE
TECHNOSET
FORWARD
Technoset Limited, the subcontract precision
engineering company based in Rugby, has
entered a new phase with the expansion of its
customer base into new markets with the
modernisation and digitisation of its
business.
The company has centred its
manufacturing operations around PSL
Datatrack production control software since
1999 and has invested in additional modules
over the years as the business has grown or
requirements changed. The most recent
addition has been dynamic Status Boards
that deliver instructions to the shop floor and
provide key management information.
Part of the Techno Group, Technoset's
successful core aerospace business is based
around its AS9100 accreditation. PSL
Datatrack has been used to collect, record
then report on data from production jobs to
build a complete history of the processes
associated with customer components and
assemblies. The history includes details of
production machinery used, inspection
equipment/results and certification of
materials alongside other key quality
information. Complete traceability and the
storage of precise digital documentation
throughout ensures certification standards
are achieved and audits completed with
minimal disruption.
The company is now offering its expert
engineering solutions in precision milled and
turned prismatic parts to other industries
including automotive, fibre optics, laser and
medical. Technoset has increased
productivity by embracing automation
through investment in a range of state-of-theart
machine tools, including automatic billet
loading. To ensure the continued success of
Technoset, succession planning has seen
many new apprentices taken on board who
are comfortable working with, and adapting
to, the latest machine interfaces.
Operations Director Adam Land has also
taken a fresh look at the full capabilities of
PSL Datatrack. “We wanted to take
advantage, not just of the individual modules
but of the way PSL Datatrack can drive our
entire business. From generating an initial
quotation for a new customer through
production on the shop floor, quality control
and traceability to final delivery and invoice,
the software can give us complete control
over our processes. We can then refine them
on the road to continuous improvement,”
says Adam.
As part of the company's complete
digitisation policy, Status Boards have
already become a crucial resource for
Technoset and replaced the handwritten
manual boards located at each
manufacturing cell. The aim is to remove all
paperwork from the shop floor and be
paperless within two years, preventing
delays and inaccuracies within the
production environment. Operators now
receive visual works order instructions and
can view live production information whilst
management obtain real time data on
production progress to assist in making
informed priority decisions and schedule
changes.
With visual displays and fast navigation
becoming more important than ever, PSL
Datatrack have developed a number of new
interactive home screens to display either the
system flow as a ‘Roadmap’ or module-based
key performance indicators (KPIs) that can
be refreshed automatically or on demand.
This provides all users with more
information at the push of a button.
Development of the Sequential Scheduler
module has also been the subject of close
collaboration between PSL Datatrack and
Technoset. It was becoming important for
Technoset to schedule operators, as well as
machine capacity, to maximise production by
ensuring shop floor staff are in the right place
at the right time. To create the optimum
schedule, Technoset can now allocate a
machine setter using PSL Datatrack, based on
their experience of certain jobs or machines.
This is a real “gamechanger,” according to
Adam, and ultimately enables the company
to provide customers with more informed
delivery information.
Naturally, management wants business to
flow as quickly and seamlessly as possible.
Technoset therefore approached PSL
Datatrack recently to find a way of
supporting its operators with the input of
information into the system. In conjunction
with the creation of customised process
layout documents that can be read by
barcode scanners, the Shop Floor Data
Collection (SFDC) module was fully
implemented.
The SFDC clocking on/off facility has
helped ensure that the most up to date
production/operator information is
available. “This has been typical of the
ongoing support that PSL provides. We
contact them and they come up with a
solution, through customisation and
recommendation of what is readily available
within the software,” comments Adam.
Indeed, there are some 1500 configuration
options within PSL Datatrack. Rather than
just straight yes/no settings, the majority of
these options are able to be defined to work
in a specific way, depending on the
preference of the user. This means there is
plenty of scope in future when Technoset
needs to consider further functionality to
improve productivity.
Technoset has always considered its
materials, processes, people and machines.
Historically, these have been administered
manually and dealt with in isolation. Now,
the company has taken the logical decision to
bring them all together within PSL Datatrack
and allow each order to seamlessly flow
through the system, providing the data and
feedback that is needed to increase
productivity, profitability and efficiency year
on year.
Adam concludes: “Data is powerful and
we are using the information derived from
PSL Datatrack to measure the business as a
whole and drive it forward. We will continue
to invest in PSL Datatrack as it captures
everything we need in a subcontract world,
providing powerful data accurately and
quickly. It’s a superb system with fantastic
performance and excellent customer
support.”
