and how the latest technologies can enhance
manufacturing processes.
Rollomatic’s are the grinding machine of
choice for many cutting tool manufacturers
and indeed more rotary cutting tools are
produced in the UK and in Ireland on
Rollomatics than on all other CNC tool
grinding machines put together. In fact over
35 million rotary cutting tools are produced
on Rollomatics in the UK and in Eire every
year. Rollomatic GrindSmart® machines
excel at producing cutting tools from
0.025mm up to 32mm in diameter, and the
superior Swiss manufactured quality of
every Rollomatic machine is demonstrated
with their industry leading 3-year unlimited
up to 5-CNC Axis are high precision
pinch/peel grinding machines with an
integrated robot loader and are ideal for the
cylindrical grinding of cutting tool blanks
and for the manufacture of punches and
special mould tools. Special tools that have
very complex geometry and high length to
diameter ratios are no problem for these
highly accurate machines.
Rollomatic also supply a range of special
LaserSmart machines for producing CBN
and similar tools including their 810XL
machine that has 6 CNC Axis and is ideal for
machining PCD tools up to 300mm in
diameter. One of these advanced machines
was recently supplied to a large UK based
PCD tool manufacturer and is the perfect
solution for machining ultra-hard tools used
hours parts and labour warranty that comes in the automotive, aerospace and
as standard on all new Rollomatic grinding
machines. Rollomatic machines are supplied
with all standard software free of charge
with free updates for life. GrindSmart®
machines are also available with a 6th CNC
axis to ensure perfect tool geometry because
the contact point of the grinding wheel
remains constant over the entire grinding
path during production. The latest linear
motor technology provides more benefits
such as enhanced surface finishes and
reduced maintenance costs.
Rollomatic ShapeSmart® machines with
woodworking industries.
Leading the way in automating entire
productions lines, Rollomatics Smart Factory
links its grinding machines to others such as
washing, deburring, laser checking and
packaging machinery with autonomous
robots. The SmartMoma® autonomous robot
on a fully mobile platform has a 6-axis
robotic arm for complex handling tasks
between production machinery of all kinds.
NEXTAGE is a new type of industrial robot
that can perform tasks in locations that are
difficult for traditional robots.
With its human-like kinematics,
NEXTAGE can easily take the place of people and utilize its two
arms to take over that tedious job without the need for users to
redesign the production line and without specialized robot tools.
Users can control and teach NEXTAGE what to do with a graphical
user interface that can conveniently be handled by people without
programming skills. The four video cameras (two on the head and
one on each arm) offer an advantage to conduct various tasks that
are challenging for traditional industrial robots. Accuracy is 0.5 mm
by utilising the cameras, while position repeatability is 0.03 mm.
Hundreds of NEXTAGE are currently working in factories; many
24h/7days a week.
Receiving its UK debut, and being exhibiting here for the first
time ever, is Comat with their C-240 EVO filtration system. This has
an oil capacity of 2,000l and has been specified to supply coolant to
two Rollomatic grinding machines. Comat
Superfiltration systems are engineered to
filter neat cutting oil to 2-3 microns (with a
classification NAS 1638 – ISO 4406 better
than new oil), whilst constantly maintaining
a stable temperature (+/- 0.2 degrees),
without compromising filtration or flow
rates so to ensure maximum consistency
over time. Comat Superfiltration systems
minimize the running costs to obtain the
lowest cost per liter of oil filtered. The C240
EVO filter unit is the latest generation of
compact Superfiltration systems designed to
manage multiple machine tools, and is able
to filter any type of contaminant (carbide,
high speed steel, medical steel, ceramic,
brass) and to guarantee intelligent
performance including energy saving and
process optimization by remote monitoring
from Comat’s headquarters near Milan to
ensure systems are always delivering peak
performance. Comat are using the Mach
show to highlight the growing use of their
systems not only for grinding machines but
for turning applications as well.
Specialists from Krebs & Riedel will be
present on the AGS stand to discuss all
grinding applications and best use of their
range of internal and external grinding
wheels. Krebs & Riedel manufacture high
quality conventional, diamond and CBN
abrasives and are constantly introducing
new types of wheels with improved grain
structures and novel bonding systems that
enhance grinding wheel quality and
optimise performance. Companies involved
in grinding are invited to meet the Krebs &
Riedel specialists and to discuss their
grinding issues and aims to improve their
grinding processes. Apart from offering high
stock removal rates to improve cycle times,
combined with more consistent part quality
by avoiding micro-cracks in the surface of
sensitive parts, another large benefit of using
Krebs wheels lies in large cost savings made
possible by reducing wheel dressing
requirements. This has the three major
advantages of lower wheel waste due to less
dressing, faster cycle times as wheels can be
kept grinding longer in between dressing
them, and also a reduced spend on
expensive diamond rollers. Krebs and Riedel
are developing new wheels all the time and
those are added to the existing collection of
over 60,000 different wheel types that are
available from them.
Tschudin are also present on the AGS
stand to discuss the many advantages that
their range of CNC Centerless grinding
machines bring. These are used to grind
parts from 0.1mm to 250mm in diameter and
for the plunge grinding of parts that are up
to 500mm long. Uniquely for centerless
grinding machines; all Tschudin machines
benefit from a special design feature with the
workrest blade mounted onto its own CNC
axis. This patented feature allows for the
blade, complete with components, to be
transferred outside of the grinding zone for
safe and easy loading and unloading of the
parts. This overcomes the dangers involved
in trying to load parts in between the
grinding and control wheels which is the
case for all other centerless grinding
machines. Proline versions also benefit from
another patented feature which is the
automatic control of the height adjustment
of the control wheel. This means that
operators no longer have to battle with
making constant adjustments for wheel wear
to ensure that the grinding point always
remains the same. This necessary adjustment
is done fully automatically on the Tschudin
Proline machines. All Tschudin machines
benefit from having the machines bed and
blocks made entirely from solid natural
granite. This guarantees the maximum
amount of thermo-stability with the high
density ensuring maximum stability and
strength.
The range of grinding and finishing
machinery receiving its UK debut can all be
seen on the AGS stand 18-328 at Mach.
CERATIZIT stand, it’s not to be missed for
anyone in the market for cutting tool
innovation.
Amongst the huge selection of tools are
three highlight products that CERATIZIT
will be showcasing during the exhibition: the
HyPower, the WPC Change and the
MonoThread.
The WPC - Change is an indexable insert
drill. Making sure that high quality
machining doesn’t have to come at a high
price, the WPC-Change and Change UNI
combine the well-known advantages of
Ceratizit’s WPC high-performance drills
with the flexibility of an exchange system,
allowing for quicker changeovers and
solution, the WPC-Change system is also
highly accurate, producing precise holes
POST PROCESSING & SURFACE
FINISHING – MACH FINTEK STAND 19-16
media and metal workpiece. It achieves this
by quickly alternating the direction of the
rotating heads. Fast acceleration and
deceleration amplify the finishing forces
exerted on the workpiece. This produces a
perfect finish, faster and without
compromising workpiece geometry.
All OTEC machines are Industry 4.0
ready. An advanced package is also available
Alongside OTEC machines, the company
brings to the UK the RENA Technologies
Hirtisation process. This allows Fintek to
offer AM part post-processing as a
subcontract service. Hirtisation removes
support structures, powder cakes and
partially melted grains. It penetrates extreme
geometry complexity and small diameter
holes.
MACH 2024 sees Fintek reach its 42nd
year. Forty-two is the answer to the ultimate
question of life, the universe and everything!
At least, according to Douglas Adam’s
creation, Deep Thought, a giant computer in
his acclaimed book, Hitchhiker’s Guide to
the Galaxy. Fintek may not be able to verify
that answer. Yet, 42 years serving the post
processing and surface finishing needs of UK
component manufacturers is no small feat.
They bring this wealth of cross-industry
expertise to their customers.
www.fintek.co.uk
with diameters of 14-30mm and hole depths
of 3xD and 5xD on all machines. Their wearresistant
holder makes them durable and
ideal for repeated machine use. With the
exception of the solid carbide indexable
insert, the WPC Change drills are made from
completely reusable materials, offering a
low-waste, sustainable drilling solution.
Specialised for steel and casting materials,
the WPC-Change drilling system will prove
to be efficient in any machine.
Moving from drilling to hydraulic chucks,
CERATIZIT’s expansion of their HyPower
hydraulic chucks means that even the most
difficult machining requirements can be met
with ease. For rough and demanding
machining operations, the HyPower Rough
is tough enough to take on any challenge,
and for optimum accessibility in the
machining zone, the HyPower Access 4.5°
offers itself as a highly flexible adapter for
machining contoured components. The
chucks come in 16 and 20mm diameters for a
32mm cylinder diameter as well as in
variations of 16, 20 and 25 mm for a 40mm
cylinder diameter, which all will be on
display at the exhibition.
On the thread milling side of cutting tool
innovation is the MonoThread, a champion
of CERATIZIT’s performance line.
Delivering an improvement on performance
of 20%, this thread milling cutter upgrade is
ideal for all standardised thread profiles with
all tolerances and especially for
asymmetrical, thin-walled, large or very
expensive workpieces. The solid carbide
shank thread milling cutters can be used to
machine any materials, including highstrength
and tempered steels, meaning that
its performance is guaranteed even in tough
machine conditions. For customers looking
for a thread milling cutter which will deliver
unbeatable performance, CERATIZIT will be
highlighting different sizes and variations of
the MonoThread on their stand.
As well as giving UK exhibition premieres to
new product lines, the Kerf Developments
stand at MACH 2024 will have a more
diverse and expansive range of products on
show than ever before. On Stand 330 in Hall
6, the Rochdale manufacturer that supplies
oxy/fuel, plasma, waterjet and fiber laser
cutting machines will be introducing two
brand new machines at MACH. The new
premieres will also be complemented with
automated cutting and welding solutions
from technical partner Lincoln Electric.
The first new machine to be presented at
MACH 2024 will be the new Kerf Ultra, this
new arrival provides both oxy/fuel and
plasma cutting in a single machine solution.
This combination machine drastically
expands the cutting capabilities, flexibility
and processing speed for end users whilst
reducing set-up time and material
changeovers. For customers of the
longstanding industry-leading Kerf models,
the new Ultra will be a technological leap
forward that marks the arrival of the next
generation of profile cutting technology. This
innovation brings the performance, speed
and precision of laser cutting to a plasma
cutting platform for the first time.
With significantly improved speed,
precision, repeatability and cut quality than
previous models, the new Ultra achieves
these elevated parameters by introducing a
brand new motion system and new linear
slide technology that sits upon a brand new
machine frame design. This combination of
factors provides vibration-free cutting under
the most challenging of conditions that
subsequently delivers a remarkably smooth
cutting motion and ultimately an
unparalleled cut quality that eliminates
secondary hand finishing.
From a specification perspective, the new
machine that is designed around a solid
fabricated portal frame utilising independent
rails can be offered in cutting table sizes from
3m x 1.5m right the way through to 40m x
4m. The machine is controlled by the
industry leading Burny 10
LCD PLUS CNC control
system and also has a new
heat shielding system that
extends the performance and
longevity of the machine.
The new arrival can be
configured with UltraSharp
plasma technology, as a
single or multi-head oxy-fuel
cutting machine or as a
combination machine with
both technologies supported
on the same machine. It is
available in a range of widths
and lengths to suit customers requirements.
There is also a wide range of Lincoln Electric
Fineline plasma units to chose from.
One feature of the new Ultra machine is
the unique oxy/fuel Automatic Gas Console
(AGC) available from Kerf. This will help to
address the skill shortage in the industry as
the AGC replicates the skill and knowledge
of an experienced machine operator using
pre-programmed technology databases.
Through digital proportional valves, this
technology sets variables such as cut heights
for piercing, low and high preheat gas
pressures, and the pierce curve reducing
spatter and blow back.
The new AGC on the Kerf Ultra also
reduces gas consumption, increases
consumable life, improves cut quality and
helps to de-skill the process for the machine
operator.
The second new machine to land at
MACH 2024 will be an exciting new LINC-
CUT FIBER 1530A Fiber Laser system that is
also brand new to the UK. More details on
this machine will be made available closer to
the show. One thing that Kerf will be proud
to discuss at MACH is its partnership with
Lincoln Electric, the world’s largest
manufacturer of cutting and welding
equipment. As an outright industry leader,
the reputation of Lincoln Electric is
unsurpassed in its field. At MACH, Lincoln
representatives will be on the Kerf stand to
present the latest Linc-Cobot system for
collaborative robotic welding as well as
demonstrating the Python X automated
cutting technology alongside the Zeman
automated beam welding technology.
With the new product arrivals that
complete the product portfolio, Kerf is now
the UK’s leading partner for all your
profiling requirements. On Stand 330 in Hall
6, the diversity of high-quality cutting
solutions combined with the welding and
automation technology from Lincoln Electric
will make the stand the ‘one-stop-shop’ for
all your cutting and welding requirements.
can be added, including Machining Navi to
minimise chatter by finding the best cutting
conditions. It employs a microphone to detect
the onset of vibration and feeds information
back to the control. A change in spindle speed is
then recommended so that an adjustment can
be made to suppress the chatter.
The popular Genos M460-5AX VMC with a
working volume of 762 x 460 x 460 mm will be
at MACH and will be one of the first Okuma
EFFICIENT, TRENDSETTING AND SUSTAINABLE Hall 6, Booth 829
As an essential step in manufacturing
processes, parts cleaning significantly
contributes to high product quality and adds
considerable value.Therefore, almost all
industrial sectors are confronted with more
stringent particulate and film-type
cleanliness specifications. Ecoclean will
provide information about its trendsetting
product portfolio, which is optimally tailored
to fulfil a broad range of cleaning
applications with highest cleanliness
requirements. By way of example, an
advanced EcoCwave machine will be shown
live on the booth to illustrate the various
features and process options.
Regardless of the industry sector, parts
cleaning is one of the critical processes in
manufacturing today. Due to increasing
demands on component performance and
reliability, new products, changed
manufacturing, coating and bonding
technologies as well as modified materials,
the requirements for particulate and film-like
cleanliness are constantly rising. This is
particularly true in high tech sectors such as
the semiconductor supply industry, medical
device engineering, aviation and aerospace
industry, optical and optoelectronic industry
as well as vacuum, laser and analysis
technologies. In order to solve these
challenging cleaning tasks in a needs- based,
efficient and sustainable manner, not only is
comprehensive technological know-how
required but also knowledge of the
applications and respective physical
relationships. As a full-range supplier of
future-oriented, flexible, and energy-efficient
solutions for industrial component cleaning,
Ecoclean and UCM, the Group’s division
specializing in precision and ultra-fine
cleaning, have both and cover the entire
spectrum of wet-chemical processes using
water-based media, solvents and modified
alcohols. This means that cleaning processes
and systems, including the most suitable
process technologies such as injection flood
washing, spray cleaning, high-pressure,
immersion, ultrasonic, megasonic and
plasma cleaning, as well as Ultrasonic Plus or
Pulsated Pressure Cleaning (PPC) as well as
drying techniques for both batch and
individual part cleaning, can be very
efficiently tailored to product and companyspecific
requirements. Machine and process
design is carried out in the company’s own
test centers, which include cleanrooms as
well as adapted plant and measuring
technology available for tasks in medical
technology and for high-purity applications.
At this year’s Ecoclean (Hall 6, Booth 829)
will inform about its broad range of adapted
system concepts for batch and single parts
cleaning with aqueous media and
environmentally compatible solvents, as well
as matching high-purity equipment
packages. The latter will be demonstrated on
the example of the advanced EcoCwave for
immersion and spraying processes with
water-based cleaning agents. The system
technology, media routing, media
preparation and design of this full-vacuum
single-chamber system have been specially
adapted for high-end cleaning applications.
Thus, it is capable of achieving consistent
results that meet highest requirements, even
if it concerns geometrically complex
components. Process options that can be
combined in almost any way, such as high
pressure spray cleaning, ultrasonic, plasma
GUHRING TO PREMIERE NEW PRODUCTS Stand 331 in Hall 19
Guhring will premiere a host of exciting new
cutting tool innovations at the MACH
exhibition. On Stand 331 in Hall 19, Guhring
will introduce new product lines alongside
proven industry-leading ranges with a
complete range of milling, threading, and
drilling tools on show.
As a world leader, Guhring will give a
MACH show premiere to the new RT100
InoxPro range of high-performance solid
carbide drills for machining stainless steel
and titanium alloys. When machining these
challenging materials, tool wear can be a
formidable opponent to your productivity
and performance. The new RT100 InoxPro
overcomes these challenges with its new
geometry that optimises chip formation. This
combines with an ultra-smooth Perrox
coating that enhances wear protection and an
optimised carbide substrate that delivers the
perfect balance of hardness and toughness.
Available with 3XD, 5XD and 7XD variants
from 3 to 20mm diameter with 0.1mm
increments, this through coolant series will
improve feed rates and tool life by more than
50% whilst improving process control and
chip evacuation. Guhring will also present its
Micro Precision Drills, the RT100T and
RT100XF as well as firm favourites like the
HR500 reaming line and SpyroTec spiral
fluted chamfer milling cutters at MACH.
The milling portfolio from Guhring
continues to rapidly expand. Since MACH
2022, the Birmingham manufacturer has
added a wealth of innovations. This includes
the new SkyLiner series of end mills for
rough and finish machining of aluminium
and non-ferrous materials. Especially suited
for pocketing and wall applications with thin
wall sections with depths up to 3XD, the new
Alu RF100 SkyLiner F delivers impeccable
surface finishes even at the highest feed rates.
This 3-flute tool is offered in diameters from
6 to 20mm with axial through coolant ducts,
a 0.2mm corner radius and a variable helix
that makes the range perfect for finish
milling. Accompanying the Alu RF100
Skyliner F at MACH will be the Alu RF100
SkyLiner R for rough machining. This series
is the perfect solution for high-performance
machining in aluminium.
Alongside these
MACH debutants,
Guhring will introduce
a multitude of
favourites such as the
RF100 Sharp, the evergrowing
Diver Series of
end mills and the RF100
Speed. The RF100 Sharp
high-performance end
mills made a MACH
debut appearance in
2022 and will return to
MACH with an
extended range to
demonstrate how to
address the issue of
machining soft, tough
and high-alloyed
materials that create
swarf evacuation
issues. The RF100 Sharp
Series has an extremely
smooth cutting action
and profound chip
removal capability. The smooth cutting
action and the ability to be used in a wide
variety of applications such as slotting,
ramping, roughing, helical milling, finishing
and trochoidal cutting, make the new RF100
Sharp the end mill of choice.
For the micro-machining sector, Guhring
will showcase the RF100 Micro Diver. The
micro-precision milling range is a universal
tool for every material and application.
Providing plunging and milling in a single
tool, the RF100 Micro Diver is available in
two variants, the 6808 and 6809. An
innovative flute form that further enhances
rigidity and eliminates vibration. The RF100
Micro Diver Series is suitable for cutting
materials up to 48HRC at depths up to 5XD
and is available with a cutting diameter from
0.79mm to 3.175mm.
As well as demonstrating all the latest
ranges, Guhring engineers will be on hand at
CITIZEN MACHINERY –
THE NEXT LEVEL Hall 20 Stand 361
Citizen Machinery will reaffirm its position
not only as one of the leading suppliers of
bar-fed lathes into the British and Irish
markets, but also as a pioneer in
implementing attendant technologies that
take that pre-eminence to the next level in
terms of innovative production. The
company’s patented LFV (low frequency
vibration) chip breaking software, its wealth
of options for automating production, and
integral laser cutting in its Cincom slidinghead
lathes are three examples.
The focus will be on Citizen’s proprietary
LFV operating system software that ensures
efficient chip breaking and every slidinghead
mill-turn centre on the stand will have
this functionality. 2024 marks the sixth
anniversary of the technology’s launch.
It has had a transformative effect on sales
of Cincom sliders around the world, and also
of selected models within Citizen’s fixedhead
Miyano turning centre range, owing to
the superiority of chip breaking over that
achievable with conventional pecking
macros and dwells. That is especially the case
when machining stainless steel, aluminium,
copper, various exotic materials and plastics.
There is also a noticeable improvement in
tool life and surface finish due to the
avoidance of recutting of chips.
Problems arising from stringy swarf
entangling around the workpiece and tool
are prevented by vibrating the X and Z servo
axes in the direction of cutting in synchrony
with rotation of the spindle. The function,
which has three alternative modes, may be
used with static and driven tools. It is
especially helpful in generating manageable
chip sizes when grooving, drilling deep,
small-diameter holes, and internal and
external thread cutting.
A versatile variant has been added to the
Cincom L20 sliding-head CNC turning
centre range from Citizen Machinery. The
L20-XII, which has a 135-degree swivelling B-
axis mounted on the gang tool post for
working at either of the opposed spindles, is
now available with an automatic tool
changer (ATC) for swapping up to 30 mm
diameter cutters in a chip-to-chip time of four
seconds. Both the tool carrier and magazine
move in the Y1-axis to effect tool change.
Believed to be a first in a sliding-head
turning machine, the ability to exchange 12
different cutters in the lower position of the
B-axis carrier greatly extends the machine’s
versatility when executing angled cross
working or end facing operations. A 13th tool
is fixed in the upper position on the carrier.
While the cutters are normally live for
performing drilling, slitting, hobbing or
multi-axis milling, positions may be filled by
turning tools if expedient.
The total number of cutters that may be
mounted in the working area of the Cincom
L20-XIIATC is 34, providing considerable
flexibility to ensure that components are
machined in as few set-ups as possible,
normally one. Tools are driven by a 2.2 kW
motor at up to 12,000 rpm, so even small
diameter mills are capable of productive
metal removal rates.
As its designation implies, the lathe is
designed to turn components from 20 mm
diameter bar, although oversized options
allow up to 25 mm diameter material to be
accepted. Another feature contributing to the
lathe’s versatility is the ability to switch over
quickly between sliding-head operation and
non-guide bush turning for more economical
production of shorter components up to
typically 2.5D.
Visitors to the Citizen Machinery UK
stand will learn that the configuration of the
12 mm bar capacity Cincom L12-X ideally
suits it to the production of dental abutments
and implants, as well as medical industry
parts in general. Multiple rear-facing
endworking tool positions including driven
stations are provided, as well as a Y2-axis to
the X2 and Z2 movements on the counter
spindle to match the three degrees of
freedom on the main spindle.
Two Cincom lathes on the stand will have
32 mm bar capacity, including the L32-VIII,
which accepts 38 mm stock if the guide bush
is removed. It is one of four machines with
exclusively gang toolposts in a modular
range that allows a user to select a precise
specification to suit the intended
applications, while retaining the option of
adding extra functionality later. The version
on show will be a 7-axis model with up to 30
tools, said to have an excellent costperformance
ratio.
The other model is Citizen’s flagship
sliding-headstock lathe, the 10-axis Cincom
M32-VIII, now in its fifth design iteration.
GROUP RHODES
TO SHOWCASE ITS
BESPOKE
METALFORMING
MACHINERY
Hall 6- Stand 599
Group Rhodes, a manufacturer of metal and
composite forming machinery, will be
demonstrating one of its innovative
metalforming presses within the MMMA
Metal Working Village at MACH 2024.
The Rhodes Interform product on display
was designed and manufactured in-house at
the company’s Wakefield factory as part of a
full turnkey solution to produce a bespoke
twin press facility for forging forklift truck
components. The entire project, which
consists of two Rhodes Interform multi-axis
presses, a complete robotic handling line and
an integrated conveying system, is capable of
processing the largest forks at a rate of 1 part
per 70 seconds.
Group Rhodes will also be discussing the
solution is applied extensively to the
lightweighting of components within the
aerospace and automotive industries.
Operations Director James Gascoigne,
commented: “We are looking forward to
attending MACH 2024, which will give us
the opportunity to demonstrate our latest
innovations in metalforming technology.
This will be our first exhibition since we
secured international patents for
Superplastic Forming & Diffusion Bonding
and it will be a great chance for our team to
discuss how this technology works and its
potential applications globally.”
He added: “Given that our 19th-century
patents were for improvements to the steam
hammer, it is amazing to think that our most
recent innovations are helping to form
components for spacecraft! We are very
proud to showcase these innovations –
especially in our 200th anniversary year.”
unparalleled flexibility. With 70% of EDM
energy typically consumed in the treatment
of dielectric fluid, the VN600Q significantly
reduces operational costs with its new fluid
control circuit that uses an inverter to control
the vertical flushing flow rate during
machining. With its newly developed
energy-saving pump and the Intelligent
Monitoring Circuit that monitors the vertical
flushing flow rate, the VN Series achieves a
remarkable 20% decrease in power
consumption, including standby, when
compared to standard models – making this
range attractive to all budgets. When
combined with the LN3W controller, the
cutting speed is increased by up to 15%,
making this new arrival an exceptionally
efficient and productive addition to your
machine shop.
Destined to wow the crowds at MACH
will be the ALC600G iG+E wire-cut EDM
machine with the new standard iGroove Plus
wire rotation mechanism. This new
technology patented by Sodick rotates the
wire during the skim cut to enable parts to be
machined from top to bottom with the
unconsumed surface of the wire. This
provides improved surface finishes and
geometric accuracy whilst significantly
reducing wire consumption and associated
costs. The machine also has the Sodick
Motion Controller (K-SMC) which plays a
pivotal role in accurately controlling the
high-speed and precise movements of the
linear motor drive. The ALC600G iG+E is
ECLIPSE MAGNETICS SHOWCASES
HIGH-PERFORMANCE FILTERS
Eclipse Magnetics will be showcasing the benefits of its highperformance
magnetic filtration systems at MACH 2024 in Hall 6,
stand 36.
Eclipse Magnetics’ fine particle filtration systems are the most
effective means of removing problem ferrous particles from
industrial fluids such as coolants, lubricants, and wash solutions.
They offer significant cost, time, and environmental benefits over
traditional membrane or barrier filtration methods.
A combination of high-intensity Neodymium magnetic cores and
advanced fluid flow dynamics ensures that even the finest ferrous
particles are removed from circulation. The resultant cleaner fluids
ensure reduced usage of consumable filter media, longer fluid life,
reduced maintenance downtime, and an improved quality surface
finish.
Magnetic filtration systems also help with the journey to “Net
Zero” by reducing waste and resultant disposal costs. They can
considerably reduce the usage and disposal of contaminated fluids
and filtration media. In addition, the ferrous particles collected can
also be reclaimed and recycled.
Featured on the stand will be the wide range of product choices,
from the manual clean Micromag for flow rates up to 150 litres per
minute up to the Automag Skid, which has an integral automated
cleaning and reclaim unit. Multi-Automag units are suitable for flow
rates up to 10,000 litres per minute.
An operational Autofiltrex automated clean filter will also feature
on the stand to spotlight its simple operation and fine particle
performance. Autofiltrex is a cost-effective option for automated,
24/7 operations.
Magnetic filters are now widely used in a vast range of
applications, including precision automotive parts, precision steel
finishing applications, bearings, precision tools, and parts wash
systems.
ADVANCED WORKHOLDING PRODUCTS
WILL FEATURE ALONGSIDE INTEGRATED
MOULD AND DIE HANDLING Hall 6, Stand 419
For the first time at a major UK exhibition,
Roemheld will demonstrate its recently
introduced, mechanically operated, centric
(self-centring) machine vice. Manufactured
in the group’s Austrian factory in Rankweil,
the new Hilma.UC 125 vice is of modular
build and is intended for 3- to 5-axis
prismatic machining applications.
The design ensures easy tool access to the
workpiece from all sides, allowing the use of
short tools for high precision machining in a
single set-up. Versatility in operation is
ensured by having a separate vice base and
two individual jaws that, when a single
handle is turned, travel simultaneously
inwards towards the centre to clamp the
workpiece and out again to release it.
Clamping force exerted via the upper
spindle is up to 52 kN. A central bearing on
the lower, unloaded spindle, which is used
for positioning the jaws, ensures that each
component is clamped precisely in the centre
of the vice. Repeatability of workholding
from part to part is better than ± 0.01 mm.
As the clamping spindle is turned, force is
applied to the workpiece via outer claws over
the jaws. An active pull-down mechanism in
the clamping jaws prevents the workpiece
from lifting. Having both a tensioning
spindle and an adjustment spindle prevents
force being applied to the base, avoiding
distortion.
The universal clamp, hence UC in the
product name, can be adapted to
accommodate a wide variety of prismatic
and round workpiece geometries and sizes in
just a few steps. The jaw opening can be
extended quickly to 600 mm, one of the
largest available on the market.
Numerous jaws up to 125 mm wide for
securing a wide range of different raw and
finished parts are offered as part of the
modular system. Additional expense in
buying extra workholding equipment is
therefore normally avoided, even when
production requirements are diverse.
There are several options for mounting
the vice. It can either be secured directly to
the machining centre table, or in a zero-point
clamping system. Adapter plates are
available for added versatility.
Available in three jaw widths – 100, 125 or
160 mm – and in up to five standard lengths
from 380 to 1,200 mm per jaw type, the
HILMA.NC vice is a modular workholding
system especially well suited to use on
vertical machining centres. Depending on the
machining strategy and degree of
automation, the clamping force can be
applied manually using a crank handle
(HILMA.NC) or hydraulically by means of a
power unit (HILMA.NCH).
The base of the vice can be fixed to the
machine table by means of a zero point
clamping system, clamping claws or bolts.
Optional reworking of the base allows
additional positioning and fixation options.
An extensive range of jaws rounds off the
flexible clamping system.
Rapid coarse adjustment is achieved by
pulling out the socket pin, allowing the
clamping slide to be moved freely. Fine
adjustment of the jaw to the component is
completed by turning the crank handle to
rotate the threaded spindle, after which the
clamping force builds up linearly to ensure
secure workholding. This is done by hand for
the mechanical version, or actuated
hydraulically to a preset force by a separate
power unit or by the machine tool’s
hydraulics.
Semi-automatic workpiece exchange in
production enables fast, efficient and safe
handling of components, resulting in high
productivity and quality. Several clamping
locations on a machine table can be actuated
simultaneously. If a foot switch is used, twohanded
loading and unloading assists
production if workpieces are heavy or large
batches are involved.
Clamping force is reproducible and is
continuously displayed to ensure a secure
gripping action without deforming or
damaging the component. It is consequently
possible to rough and finish in the same
clamping by varying the force, so there is no
tolerance build-up and process reliability is
ensured.
AFFORDABLE STANDARD CMMS GAIN EXTRA ACCURACY
Hall 19, Stand 540
Manufacturers wishing to inspect
components machined to tight tolerances,
but unwilling to invest in an expensive, ultrahigh-accuracy
coordinate measuring
machine (CMM), now have the option of
selecting an ALTERA C HA (high accuracy)
from LK Metrology. Available in five sizes,
the largest 15.9.7 model will be exhibited on
the company’s stand at MACH 2024.
The ceramic-bridge machines are
constructed from the same component parts
as the standard ALTERA C range, but are
optimised during build at the company’s
Derbyshire production facility to deliver 16
percent higher accuracy during a measuring
cycle, with 13 percent better repeatability and
50 percent more accurate scanning.
When implementing design
improvements to the ALTERA C HA,
particular attention was paid to upgrading
the moving bridge. The spread of the air
bearings supporting the main drive leg has
been widened to increase the stiffness of the
bridge assembly by 17 percent overall, which
is particularly beneficial during high-speed
movements. Advantages to the user are
considerable, as measuring uncertainty when
chasing tolerances down to microns is
significantly better. For the same reason, the
bearing mountings have been further
stiffened and their alignment improved. Due
to the increased dynamic forces in play when
measuring on the fly, the new design is
especially helpful when using a scanning
probe.
New on show also at MACH 2024 will be
LK’s own CMM laser scanning probe, SLK25
VIVID, and the TSR-5 tool change and
storage rack, both of which are affordable
solutions, as well as automation with a
collaborative robot, and a second-generation
LK FREEDOM arm with L100 VIVID laser
scanner. Additionally there will be a
standard ALTERA C CMM, the latest version
of LK’s CAMIO programming, analysis and
reporting software, including the popular
module for automated inspection of gears,
and the LK FREEDOM rotary index table that
speeds inspection of parts using an
articulated arm, raising metrology
productivity. Industry-leading third-party
hardware and software will also be in
evidence on the stand.
HORN TO PRESENT NEW TOOLS FOR BORING, MILLING,
THREAD WHIRLING AND TURNING Hall 6, Stand 210
Paul Horn, the solid carbide tooling, carbide
insert and tool holder manufacturer
headquartered in Tübingen, Germany, has
supplied more than 200,000 special tooling
solutions over the years and currently offers
25,000 standard products, including five due
to be introduced to the UK and Irish markets
at MACH 2024. Wholly-owned subsidiary
Horn Cutting Tools will be on stand 6-210 to
explain the reasons behind the launches and
will also exhibit a broad cross section of the
manufacturer's extensive tooling range.
An addition to the Horn Supermini
boring, grooving and chamfering system will
be announced, a variant with a precisionground
rake face designed for producing
ultra-fine bores. The ground cutting edge is
free from notches when viewed at a
magnification of x200 and the tool can be
used to machine components having an
inside diameter from just 0.3 mm. Sharp
insert geometry ensures process reliability,
even with very small infeed and cutting feed
rates. The specially developed coating is
suitable for stainless steels, non-ferrous
metals and other metals.
Horn has developed a new, solid carbide
milling cutter range for machining stainless
steels, widely used in the food, chemical and
pharmaceutical sectors, as well as in the
watchmaking and other precision
engineering industries. Due to their
geometry and efficient chip breaking, the
mills are suitable for machining numerous
other materials as well. The combination of
substrate, macro and micro geometry, and
IG3 coating exhibits high cutting
performance and long tool life. The coating in
particular offers high temperature resistance
for machining steels alloyed with chromium,
nickel and molybdenum.
A new, high-performance, carbide grade
from Horn, the SG3P, presents enhanced
possibilities in terms of performance and tool
life when whirling medical screws. It enables
shorter cycle times for thread production
thanks to higher cutting values, including
when processing materials that traditionally
are difficult to machine. In addition, the
combination of an ultra-fine-grain carbide
powder and a high-temperature-resistant
coating raises process reliability and
improves component quality. In-house
coating of the inserts enables fast delivery
times and the carbide grade is available for
all standard Horn thread whirling systems.
A long overhang can cause a turning tool
to oscillate when boring internal geometries.
In addition to causing chatter marks on the
surface of the machined component, the
vibrations can lead to a significant reduction
in tool life. For unfavourable length-todiameter
ratios, even damped boring bars
may vibrate under certain conditions. To
help mitigate these difficulties, Horn has
introduced a boring bar with adjustable
damping so it can be set to match the
amplitude of the oscillation generated by the
machining process. Precise adjustment
enables vibration-free turning, resulting in
better surface quality of the machined
component and a significant increase in
insert life.
Horn is also launching a new tool range
for manufacturing brake discs economically.
It includes solid CBN (cubic boron nitride)
ISO inserts, mainly used for cast iron
machining, and CBN-tipped full-radius and
shaped inserts. The grade has no metallic
bonding phase and therefore has the highest
hot hardness of all cutting materials. Horn
offers the solid CBN ISO S turning insert
with eight cutting edges for roughing and
finishing. Cutting speeds of well over 1,000
m/min, depths of cut of several millimetres
and feed rates up to 0.7 mm/rev are typical
values. Stable tool carriers are included in the
offering. Depending on the operation and
metal removal rate, in excess of 1,000 cast
iron brake discs can be machined per insert
corner.
functions for rotary contours, finishing paths
for grooving, a ‘remove rings’ function, a 2D
stretch command and a new tool turret
support that via hyperMILL® VIRTUAL
Machining can create a detailed map of all
tools in a turret to create a seamless NC code
simulation. The new enhancements will
simplify the creation of chamfers, contours,
radii and undercuts, create uniform
allowances for finishing when grooving,
reliably remove ring chips from components,
quickly and easily adapt parametric 2D
LANTEK BRINGS ITS FULL SUITE OF SHEET METAL SOFTWARE
Lantek, specialists in sheet metal CAD/CAM and ERP software will
be exhibiting its latest software, Hall 17 Stand 319.
Flexibility is one of the major improvements in Lantek Expert,
making it easy to move nests of parts between different machines as
production requirements dynamically change without the need for
manual adjustments. New is the Assembly 2 Nesting software. Here,
customers can import a complete 3D model assembly of parts. These
are individually sorted and unfolded in the Lantek software, nested
and then cut in the shortest possible time, without the user needing
their own CAD system to do 3D model manipulation.
For tube and pipe work, Lantek Flex3D has seen some
fundamental changes which reduce execution times. The software
also helps eliminate collisions through hole destruction technology
and aims for a ‘no scrap’ target with micro joints connecting parts
together to use up every bit of the tube material.
Lantek’s Machine Connectivity makes it possible to directly
connect to different machines, gathering information from the
machine automatically. This data is fed into the Lantek Control Panel
app which provides a cloud-based interface to monitor the cutting
machine state irrespective of its type or technology, without operator
intervention, in real-time. The app can be accessed on a tablet or
mobile device so that the collected and merged data can be viewed
by managers giving them a real-time overview of the complete
production process and manufacturing facility. The app also displays
utilisation rates so that free capacity can be allocated and, gives
warnings when unexpected events occur, so that remedial action can
be taken without delay.
Adam Ball, Solutions Sales Manager for Lantek UK says, “This
technology is particularly useful for companies that use a mix of
Q-switched Marking for flexibility and versatility in the marking
process. Laser Lines also offers accurate and consistent marking with
the Through the Lens Vision system and for those looking for
different cutting technologies such as punching, laser or waterjet
from different manufacturers. The real time feedback will lead to
significant productivity improvements, avoiding errors, cost
overruns and will optimise the use of available machine capacity.”
The power of the Lantek software is in the way in which it is
integrated into the overall manufacturing and management
processes within a sheet metal company. Accurate and fast
quotations directly impact the levels of business won. Lantek has the
tools to minimise the work involved in creating quotations, using
stored, calculated and historic data on material prices, operation
times and material usage with products including iQuoting,
Assembly 2 Nest and Lantek Expert.
Over 35 years of development have been put into optimising the
software to exactly suit sheet metal manufacture, giving Lantek the
skills, knowledge and capability to maximise the efficiency and
profitability of manufacturers.
New generation of igubal spherical plain
bearings are equipped with a predictive
maintenance system
Costly machine failures due to undetected
defects in demanding applications should soon
be made redundant, thanks to a new generation
of two- and four-hole flange bearings with
“smart” features. The lubrication-free highperformance
plastic bearings are equipped with
miniature wireless sensors that enable
condition monitoring and aid predictive
maintenance.
A maintenance technician is working on, for
example, a conveyor belt in a bottling factory.
His phone app notifies him that a flange bearing
is approaching its wear limit.
While previously there was a risk that this
would go undetected and lead to an expensive
system failure, today the technician can spot the
issue and replace the bearing during the
production break. “This scenario is no longer
science fiction. As part of our smart plastics
range, we are gradually equipping plain
bearings made of high-performance plastic with
networked sensors,” says Rob Dumayne, drytech
director at igus. "Our two- and four-hole
flange bearings of the igubal series can now also
enable condition monitoring and predictive
maintenance so as to avoid unforeseen
damage."
Flange bearings transmit their
status by radio
How do the new “Industry 4.0” connected
bearings work?
igus integrates an abrasion sensor into the
To accommodate the diverse needs of the
marketplace, Starrag Heckert has now
introduced its new H Compact Series of
horizontal machining centres. The benefits of
horizontal machining centres can sometimes be
overshadowed by the sizeable footprint of the
machines in comparison to their vertical
counterparts - with the H Compact Series,
Starrag Heckert delivers the benefits of a
horizontal with a compact footprint that will
appeal to manufacturers.
Looking at the merits of the new H Compact
machines, Lee Scott from Starrag says: “The
new machines are called ‘Compact’ as they have
a very compact size. They are horizontal
machines which denote the ‘H’ and they are
fitted with a trunnion table with 5-axis
capability that provides an impressive X-axis
range. We can also incorporate a high-speed
table on the machine for turning - this
configuration gives us the ‘T’ range. In its basic
guise, it is a twin pallet horizontal machining
centre with a monobloc mineral cast material
base that is very vibration-absorbent and also
very stiff. The machine design is like a giant
bathtub where all the chips fall straight out of
the work area and take all of the heat with them.
polymer spherical bearing, a thin circuit board,
plus a battery for power supply without cables.
This allows the bearing to continue to move
freely for spherical compensation. As the
bearing wears, the traces of the board are
interrupted. When the electronics lose the signal
of a trace, they know that the wear has reached
a certain level. The sensor emits a digital signal
over a Long Range Network (LoRa), a wireless
standard for the Internet of Things that is
known for its energy efficiency. This is received
by the i.Cee control cabinet module, which now
takes over the data evaluation. The smart
bearing software now knows that the trace is
worn out and calculates the percentage of
abrasion.
Over time, the sensor wears out layer by
layer, parallel to the running surface of the
bearing. And it regularly emits signals that
allows the control to work out the bearing's
condition. Users can see the remaining service
The column then sits on the base with linear
rails and a direct measuring system across the
whole of the machine that delivers exceptional
accuracy and optimal cutting conditions.”
The machine column also has positive
leveraged ratios that are credited to maximum
guideway distances and also weight
compensation that improves performance,
accuracy and efficiency of the Y-axis that is
driven by ball screws. Alluding to the pallet
system on the new series, Lee says: “It's a twin
pallet machine and the surface of the pallets are
ground, so the interfaces are perfect for the
fixturing, whether it be on a trunnion or a
standard B-axis. Outside of the machine, we
then have the setup station. So, whilst the first
pallet is working inside the machining area, the
second pallet is either loaded by a robot, an
FMS or an operator. After all, if the spindle isn’t
life and when a maintenance call is due on a
web-based dashboard, that they can see the
bearing’s status from anywhere in the world
with a PC, tablet or smartphone.
Luxembourg's state-owned railway
company becomes the first pilot customer for
smart flange bearings.
The new flange bearings are in the prototype
phase, and they have already convinced one
pilot customer: the Société National des
Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL).
Luxembourg's state-owned railway
company operates a 200-metre-long car wash
that cleans local and long-distance trains every
day. In the past, gearbox malfunctions in the
wash wagon repeatedly led to costly system
failures. For this reason, CFL has abandoned
lubricated standard ball bearings and instead
installed the cross-linked spherical bearings
from igus in the UC bearing housings.
The advantage: These high-performance,
spherical bearings are corrosion-free, chemicalresistant
and, with integrated solid lubricants,
enable low-friction and maintenance-free dry
running. "The other bearings need to be
lubricated every few weeks, which is timeconsuming,"
says CFL maintenance manager,
Mike Feinen. "So we've now ticked off this
maintenance snag." Rob Dumayne adds: "The
networking of these smart bearings is the icing
on the cake. Thanks to continuous condition
monitoring, CFL can prevent failures, plan
maintenance interventions and make full use of
the service life of the polymer bearings."
STARRAG PACKS A HIGH-END HMC INTO A SMALL FOOTPRINT
cutting, the machine isn’t making any money.”
As you would expect from Starrag, the
machine has a complete range of spindles
available. This includes a 30,000rpm spindle
offering for cutting aluminium, high-torque or
geared spindles for machining titanium as well
as quill spindles for extended reach - there is a
spindle for every application. Referring to the
tool magazines that feed the spindle, Lee says:
“The tool magazines start with a single
magazine, and we can also run a parallel system
with up to a total of 450 tools on this machine
frame. You also have to get rid of the chips. This
machine can create huge volumes of aluminium
swarf that have to go through the machine and
out to a swarf system, here the machine frame
design has been optimised to remove chips
from the work area at high speed.”
As an automation-friendly solution, the new
H Compact Series caters for customers with a
wide range of options and interfaces to present
maximum flexibility. Together with systems
partners like Fastems, Starrag can offer FPC and
FPT modules as well as integration with robots,
gantry loading cells and interlinking machines
from a single source.
NEO RANGE AND SERVICE FOCUS DRIVE STRONG
LASER SALES FOR MAZAK
The new NEO range of laser processing
machines and a strong focus on customer
service helped Yamazaki Mazak record its
most successful ever year for laser sales in
2023.
The NEO range, which complements
Mazak’s 2D laser and 3D tube cutting
machines, has opened up new markets for
the company within both OEMs and
subcontractors.
Ian White, General Sales Manager – Laser
Products for Yamazaki Mazak, says the NEO
machines – including the OPTIPLEX NEO
20kW, a 2D fiber laser with 3015 and 4220
bed sizes, and the FG-400 NEO fiber laser for
long tubes, pipes and structural materials –
have added new capability to the Mazak
laser range.
“The NEO machines have helped us
penetrate new markets, particularly where
laser users are working with heavy plate – in
the energy and construction sectors, for
example.
“We’ve also recorded a good mix of sales
into both OEMs and subcontractors, with
particularly strong results in medical – a
sector that requires exceptional accuracy and
cut quality.”
The strength of Mazak’s service offering
for laser users has also driven market share.
Mr White added: “Mazak has invested in
its service and support for customers, and we
now have 25 applications staff ready to
advise. We have also introduced our
industry-first 24-hour service hotline for
laser users, which is available even if the
machine is not under warranty or a service
contract. The hotline enables customers to
speak with a UK-based engineer to get their
machines back up and running at any time of
the day.”
Automation has also proved to be a very
successful selling point for Mazak, with the
company now boasting the largest range of
automation options available.
Mr White said: “We have an exceptionally
large automation range with more than 50
options for customers due to our use of
Mazak’s Open Robot Interface technology,
which means virtually any automation
system can be fitted to our machines. We can
also design bespoke systems tailored to
individual customer production
requirements.”
Mr White says the opening of the
European Laser Technology Centre in Milan
has also helped promote Mazak’s laser range.
“It has been a great addition to our
Technology Centre network and has raised
Mazak’s profile among laser users across
Europe. They can see our entire range in one
place and easily visit customers similar to
themselves who are using our laser
processing machines to drive real
productivity and profitability.”
Mazak recently expanded its laser
manufacturing with a move to a larger
facility at Minokamo in Japan, which has
increased production capacity and further
integrated the company’s operations.
“Our customers are seeing the advantages
derived from Mazak’s increased investment
in laser technology and the ever-closer
relationship between machine tools and
laser,” Mr White continued.
“A lot of subcontractors are moving from
lasers into wider machining to provide a
complete manufacturing solution. We are
benefiting from common controls, including
engcon's new tiltrotator control system DC3
takes big steps forward in terms of
compatibility with other leading excavator
manufacturing companies worldwide. In
recent years, engcon has developed a
completely new control system for
excavators, the DC3. Last May we announced
that the DC3 was compatible with Cat® Next
Gen Hydraulic excavators (NGH) and after
extensive testing both in the workshop and
with end customers, the DC3 is now
compatible with even more of the leading
excavator manufacturers.
We are happy about the fact that several
excavator manufacturers can now connect to
our new control system, says Martin
Engström, product owner at engcon. With
the new system we will really take digging to
completely new levels, the system is smart,
easy to install, with improved remote
the new SmoothLx, which means customers
can standardise on Mazak technology across
their facilities.”
Mr White is confident that 2024 will
deliver more success. “We’re launching the
new OPTIPLEX Ez machine – a cost-effective
laser processing range with multiple
advanced cutting features – which I believe
will be very competitive and popular within
the UK market.
“Laser users are increasingly
understanding what Mazak can offer, both in
terms of our extensive machine range and the
quality of our service support, which is
NEW DUAL SCHEDULING FEATURE TRANSFORMS
PRODUCTION PLANNING FOR SUBCONTRACTORS
PSL Datatrack, a prominent UK-based
provider of production control software, has
introduced a transformational Dual
Scheduling feature to its modular system.
This enhancement offers subcontract
precision engineering companies a
simultaneous view of their production
schedules, calculated by both capacity and
target date.
A fundamental aspect of the new Dual
Scheduling feature is its focus on machine
availability, allowing for a realistic and
practical assessment of what can be achieved
in the workshop. This capacity-based
approach offers a clear view of potential
bottlenecks, ensuring a more robust and
achievable production schedule is generated.
Dual Scheduling brings a host of
advantages to PSL Datatrack users by taking
multiple planning constraints into account.
Including a view of the Sequential Scheduler
module calculated by target date now
ensures that hours not scheduled are
displayed and utilised effectively. This Justin-Time
(JIT) scheduling view maximises
operational efficiency and eliminates wasted
time on the shop floor.
By utilising Dual Scheduling, users of the
software therefore maintain an optimal
balance between production and recovery
time, avoiding any compromises that might
affect overall productivity.
PSL Datatrack has worked hard to ensure
that both views are displayed side-by-side
and can be set up anywhere around a factory
via Status Boards, providing users with an
all-encompassing view of their production
landscape. An additional screen may be
commissioned to provide detailed insights
into late jobs, empowering businesses to
promptly address issues and ultimately
maintain customer satisfaction.
Jota Advanced Engineering Limited, an
enthusiastic user of PSL Datatrack, has
emphasised the significance of the Dual
Scheduling innovation. “We have been
working with PSL Datatrack to manage all of
our production capabilities and have recently
collaborated with them to develop an
extension to the software where we can ‘plan
to capacity’ using Dual Scheduling,”
comments Ryan Goodger, Director.
“By integrating an ‘hours not scheduled
by target date’ feature, the system can
automatically schedule all relevant jobs
further back in the production queue. This
allows us to analyse the risk for the latest a
job can be scheduled, as it gives full visibility
of our capacity and any potential production
gaps,” continues Ryan.
The new Dual Scheduling feature
therefore highlights PSL Datatrack’s
commitment to streamlining the entire
production process, empowering
subcontractors by enhancing operational
efficiency and reliability throughout.
“The system itself is logical, innovative
and gives us the flexibility to reschedule jobs
without missing a deadline. The visibility of
the system has been tailored specifically to
suit our needs and to help us grow and
adapt,” concludes Ryan.
large variety of ITC tools from face mills,
endmills, bullnose, ball nose endmills, drills
and taps amongst other niche tooling. This
variety of tooling is needed to support the
many different items we machine, including
but not limited to patterns, moulds, jigs,
components, inserts, props and models. Add
into this mix that we machine an array of
materials and it is very clear that we need a
tooling supplier with a huge variety of
options. We also have an onsite vending
solution from ITC with a comprehensive
stock level that ITC keep fully serviced to
support our business.”
Looking at the cost savings derived from
the ITC range of cutting tools, Dan Johnston
adds: “When we conducted a full cost
analysis of our tooling and the total material
removed, it’s clearly evident that the ITC
tooling is great value for money. We have
managed to control costs over the years and
ITC has helped to improve efficiencies whilst
enabling our business to embrace the very
latest tooling technology for composite
machining.”
“On more than one occasion, ITC has
gone above and beyond to give full technical
support in the implementation of new
tooling, applications and machining
strategies. When presented with a new
material which we had very little knowledge
of, ITC built a bespoke suite of tooling and
trials to support our ambitions to effectively
and efficiently machine the new material.
The results have proven extremely
encouraging and this certainly went a long
way in building our confidence in working
with that particular material.”
In conclusion, Dan says: “We naturally
demand the highest quality and this applies
to all aspects of the business. The CNC
department can maintain and iteratively
improve by leveraging ITC's knowledge and
vast array of tooling. Operating with a
number of OEMs in a wide variety of sectors
such as the automotive, aerospace,
motorsport and marine industries to name a
few, being adaptable to challenges is key.
With the full support of ITC, we know we
can attack any challenge and material with
absolute confidence.”
CASE STUDY
FABRICATOR REBALANCES BUSINESS TOWARDS
SUBCONTRACT MACHINING
Twenty years ago, Gareth Davies started
Burton-on-Trent company TAS Engineering
as a steel, stainless steel and aluminium
fabrication shop serving food and beverage
customers, the pharmaceutical and
automotive sectors, and industry in general
with fire escapes, factory staircases and
secondary steelwork.
In 2014, he established a machine shop to
add extra value to the products the company
was shaping and welding. Today, there is a
pair of 3-axis, vertical-spindle machining
centres on-site and three CNC lathes, the
latest of which is a second-hand Cincom L20
sliding-head turning centre from Citizen
Machinery UK.
What prompted the purchase in October
2023 of this 20-year-old lathe, the company's
first sliding-head model, was a desire to turn
more efficiently components in a range of
materials from bar up to 20 mm in diameter.
A case in point is the ongoing production
since 2020 of a 16 mm diameter, 316 stainless
steel magnet holder, which is welded to a
small, laser-cut and bent plate to form part of
a safety unit for industrial switchgear. The
turned component, of which 200 are required
per month, was previously produced
complete on one of two fixed-head, twinspindle
lathes (that have since been sold) in a
2.5-minute cycle.
Mr Davies had previous experience of
programming and setting sliding-head
lathes, albeit from 40 years ago working for a
subcontracting firm in London that
happened to be the first ever customer of the
The 20-year-old control system looks surprisingly modern.
Gareth Davies, owner of TAS Engineering, operating the used Citizen Cincom L20 slidinghead
lathe on the shop floor in Burton-on-Trent. The machine was supplied with an Iemca
bar feeder and a CoolBlaster high pressure coolant delivery system rated at 2,000 psi.
Citizen sales agency at that time. The lathes
were equipped with servo-driven cams and
while the technology has moved on
enormously over the decades, the underlying
principle of operation is still similar.
It was apparent that the steel magnet
holder could be produced more quickly on a
modern Citizen L20 twin-spindle, slidinghead
turning centre than on a fixed-head
lathe due to the faster axis motions of the
gang tool carriers on the former compared
with the turret movements on the latter.
However, Mr Davies was surprised to find
that the part could be machined more than
three times faster on the Cincom, the cycle
now taking just 48 seconds.
The sliding-head turning centre was
installed and commissioned in October 2023,
so it is still early days. Nevertheless, four
additional jobs had been won by the end of
the following January as a result of having
the capacity available on the shop floor.
None of this new work has anything to do
with the fabrication side of the TAS
Engineering's business. One contract
involved the production of 1,000-off brass
parts for a customer in industrial gases,
which ran 24/7 for one week, despite Mr
Davies being new to sliding-head lathe
operation.
The other jobs were 70-off engine parts
produced from steel bar in one hit rather than
in two operations on a fixed-head lathe plus
another on a mill; 3,000-off heritage railway
carriage brass fixing pins; and another
component for the industrial gases sector
machined from 0.75-inch diameter CZ121.
CASE STUDY
Working area of the Cincom L20, showing the gang tooling and sub spindle on the left
opposing the sliding-headstock unit.
A batch of heritage railway carriage brass fixing pins.
Mr Davies commented, "Although all the
parts are relatively simple, some tolerances
are tight. The bore on one of the components
for industrial gases has to be held to 0.05 mm
total and the engine shaft OD must be within
0.04 mm.
"Despite the Cincom being 20 years old,
provided we run it at sensible feeds and
speeds we achieve this level of accuracy
easily.
"Not only that, but we have confidence
leaving the machine running unattended to
get on with other tasks, as all dimensions
repeat from part to part to within 15
microns."
He went on to mention that although
the purchase price of the lathe was only
about one quarter of the investment
needed for a modern 20 mm capacity
Cincom in the manufacturer's L-series, he
was treated by all Citizen Machinery UK
staff as though he were purchasing a new
L20. "They went above and beyond what
would normally be expected for the sale of
a used machine and the delivery,
commissioning and training were
exemplary," he said. "I cannot sing their
praises highly enough."
TAS Engineering is currently undergoing
a metamorphosis whereby, while
fabrications will continue to play a part in the
business, in the future it will only be if they
undergo prismatic machining or contain
turned parts. Already this policy has seen the
contribution of chip removal, mostly metal
and but also plastic, in the factory rise from
10% to 90% of turnover. It is a progression
that was accelerated by the Covid pandemic,
when on-site visits to provide customers
with fabrication services were forbidden.
Another insight offered by Mr Davies is
the formidable financial advantage of
purchasing a good quality used machine
tool, provided that one can be sourced, which
is not always easy. His L20 had only 40,000
hours on the clock when it arrived,
equivalent to having run for a single shift
every weekday. It is notable that, for the jobs
completed so far, repayments on finance for
a new Cincom would not have been viable.
On the other hand, paying back only onequarter
of the amount puts TAS Engineering
in a strong position to quote for work very
competitively, especially if it is not especially
complex. Moreover, small quantities are also
practicable, provided that the machine can be
set up quickly. Mr Davies often uses Citizen's
Alkart Wizard software running on his
laptop to speed programming and
downloads the code to the control.
Applications engineers at Citizen
Machinery UK are always on hand to assist
when needed. A recent instance was when
Mr Davies was worried about possible
damage to the steel engine shaft as it was
ejected from the sub spindle. Within an hour,
a response was received advising him to omit
an M-code at the end of the cycle and replace
it with a specific line of alternative code that
worked perfectly as soon as it was
implemented. "Such after-sales engineering
back-up is invaluable, especially if you are
new to sliding-head turning," he concluded.
CASE STUDY
MOBILITY AID MANUFACTURER USES
XYZ MACHINE TOOLS
XYZ Machine Tools is helping Handicare to
maintain the accuracy, rigidity and quality of
its stairlifts by machining the mating surfaces
of its tubular components using an XYZ RMX
3500 for straight sections and an XYZ RMX
4000 for curved sections to achieve a perfect
fit.
Handicare is a leader in its industry
covering accessibility, patient handling and
vehicle accessibility and can trace its roots
back to 1886. Its objectives are to offer
solutions and support to increase the
independence of physically challenged or
elderly people, and to enable them to live an
active life on their terms as well as to
facilitate work for their care providers and
family.
Handicare’s headquarters are located in
Stockholm, Sweden and it sells its products
and solutions globally and is active in more
than 40 countries. Of the Group’s total
revenue in 2020, Europe accounted for 71%,
North America for 28 % and the rest of the
world 1%.
One of its UK manufacturing facilities is
at Kingswinford, Birmingham where it
designs and manufactures straight and
curved stairlifts, producing more than 50
every day. Each stairlift is bespoke, designed
to fit its customers’ individual stair
configuration. The key element of each
stairlift is a pair of tubular runners with gear
racks welded to them. These support the seat
and, with its pinion drive and rollers, allow it
to transport the customer smoothly and
safely between floors. Each set is unique and
carefully designed to fit the stairwell.
During the design phase of each stairlift,
consideration has to be given to handling the
Set of stairlift tubes finished and ready for shipping
Gary Steele operates the XYZ RMX 4000
tube sections and accessibility for installation
and assembly. This means that the set of
tubes needs to be made in sections ready for
assembly on site. Some shapes for curved
stairlifts can be complex, for example moving
the seat to a park position around a newel
post, so these need particular care during
manufacture.
Nabil Mohamed, Production Engineer at
Handicare explains, “For straight stairlift
sections the tubes and gear rack are robot
welded together and they are then cut to
length. We leave an excess of 0.5 mm which
is then machined off on the XYZ RMX 3500.
We do this to make sure that the gear profile
on the rack is perfect when we join the tubes.
If we didn’t do this and left a slight mismatch
on the gear profile, the customer would feel
an uncomfortable jolt every time the seat
went over a joint.”
The XYZ RMX 3500 is dedicated to
straight sections and has a set of fixtures on
the bed each designed to lock into the gear
profiles to position the tube in the exact
position required to mill across the end and
generate an accurate gear profile and perfect
tube length. The open design of the bed mill
makes it possible to work with long tube
sections which overhang the bed. The
machine’s ProtoTRAK® control has the
different programs already prepared so that
it is easy to select the one required for the
fixtures being used.
For curved profile stairlifts, the process is
similar with tube sections being machined on
the XYZ RMX 4000. This has a larger bed
1474mm x 355mm and has fixtures loaded to
suit the machining the ends of curved
sections, again locating the tubes on the gear
rack to ensure end machining is accurate.
Further special purpose machinery cleans
the burrs inside and outside the tubes, while
etched marks on each component give
reliable identification. To join tubes, straight
sections can be connected with crimped
inserts and cross drilled bolt holes, while
curved sections are robot welded together
with an internal collar. Special purpose
machines clamp components together for
these operations to ensure on site assembly
goes smoothly before physical inspection
and surface finishing.
Nabil Mohamed says, “Every component
goes through one of the XYZ RMX machines,
so they are a crucial part of the process, and
their record of reliability is very important to
us. Being able to accurately machine the ends
of every tube and gear rack is a vital part of
the quality, performance and reliability of
our products.”
Advanced PULSE cutting for nickel
alloys and tough materials. Fitted with
Smartcut 0.9mm blades reduces waste
material, or Axcela 1.3mm for fast cutting.
Amada Pulse technology spreads the
wear along the entire blade unlike wavy
