The Thoughts of the Chairman
Dear Members,
John J Shanahan,
Chairman
The Second Floor re-opened just in time for
Rugby Week and our “soft opening” of the new
food and beverage facilities turned out to be the
busiest week of the year! Well done to all the Staff for
coping admirably in new working conditions and under
great pressure. As we deal with defect rectification
works and some issues with new equipment, we will
look to expand the menus at the Second Floor outlets.
Artwork and other detailing will also begin to be put in
place and we will then “live with” the new facilities for
a while and see what changes will be needed as time
goes on.
Even though April was a busy sporting month,
especially for rugby, we will also have a busy May. The
Yau Yee League Cup Finals will be held on the Main
Pitch on the 5th May, with our very own Colts in the
Cup Final. On the 6th May, we host the Hong Kong
Lawn Bowls Association Men’s National Pairs
Semi-Finals. And, we have the HKFC Junior Soccer
Sevens Tournament the weekend of the 12th and
13th May. On the 18th – 20th May, we have our 19th
annual international soccer tournament, the HKFC
Citi Soccer Sevens, with 16 teams from around
the world in the competition. These include such
illustrious teams as Leicester City, Aston Villa, Brighton
and Hove Albion, Newcastle United and West Ham
United from the English Premier League, as well as
Australian A-League side Wellington Phoenix and
Newcastle Jets, Japanese J-League team Kashima
Antlers and Scottish Premier League side Glasgow
Rangers, along with Serie-A side Cagliari. The Club
will also be entering two teams and the Hong Kong
Football Association will be represented by the HKFA
Red Dragons and, as usual, we welcome back Hong
Kong Premier League champions, Kitchee. Plenty of
soccer action for you to enjoy this month, so why not
come down to the Club and cheer the teams on.
And, to close out the month we host the Hong
Kong V Malaysia match in the Asian Rugby
Championship on Saturday 26th May.
In closing, I will note, as mentioned below, the
passing of ex-Club Chairman and Soccer Section
member, Keith Marshall, who was Chairman of the
Club from 1985-1988. Our condolences to his family
and friends.
John J Shanahan
Keith Marshall, who was Chairman of the Club from 1985-1988.
From the Desk of Mark Pawley
Mark Pawley,
General Manager
As the Chairman has noted in his article
the newly renovated 2/Fl is now open (at
time of writing it has been open for just
three weeks) and, whilst the 1st April was
probably not the best day to have opened, we had to
get everything ready for the start of Rugby Week just
a couple of days later. The Staff did a tremendous job
in getting all the Outlets set-up and ready to operate
with literally a couple of days notice. Obviously too,
the Kitchen Brigade had to move into a brand new
kitchen, with a completely different layout and, within
four days of opening move from zero food production
to the single busiest day of the year – the Thursday
of the Rugby Tens! So, a massive thank you to all
Staff Members for the effort put in not only for the 2/
Fl opening but also for coping with the business levels
achieved over Rugby Week.
Talking of Staff, quite quickly after the Annual Staff
Party (for last year), we started the process for the next
Employee(s) of the Year. It is pleasing to report (see
photos below) that Connie, Sin and Rainbow are the
recipients of the First Quarter Star Award. Well done
to all three for getting nominated, and then chosen for,
this award.
On the food and beverage front whilst we are not
quite up to full speed at the moment, I can say that
the Carvery Set Lunch is now available again in the
Chairman’s Bar and, for those gin drinkers amongst
you, I see that we now have a rather nice looking Gin
and Tonic menu available (in the Chairman’s Bar) – the
different gins being served with the Fever-Tree Premium
Tonic Water range.
In the Restaurant there is virtually a full A la Carte menu
now available and, don’t forget to look to book the first
Wine Dinner (in the new Restaurant) on Thursday 31st
May – the Tenuta Di Corte Giacobbe and Dal Cero Wine
Dinner which is hosted by the winery owner, Francesca
Dal Cero.
An absolute forget-me-not is Mother’s Day on Sunday
13th May where, per the notice on page 16 of the
magazine we have something different going on in the
Coffee Shop, Restaurant and Happy Valley Suites.
And, a big well done to the Organising Committee for
the GFI HKFC Rugby Tens and the very best of luck
to the Organising Committee of the HKFC Citi Soccer
Sevens – the 18th to the 20th May.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!
JUNE PREVIEW
18 May 2018

Squash News
HKFC and HKCC Squashers
Give Cricket Team run for their Money
off drives. At the other end John Thompson the other opener was
struggling to get the ball away and was happy to see the opening pair
of bowlers replaced in the 10th over. Unfortunately this was the time
when the Taverners upped the pace and put on two quicks which made
the scoring even harder. Keith got to 33 and retired to bring in Malcolm
Kerr (14 runs) who started well with some nice cut shots. John by this
time was trying anything he could to get runs and after being dropped
was then caught and bowled in the next over for 14. The HKCC squash
star player Chris Evans increased the scoring rate with some fantastic
long sixes down the ground and was quickly to his 30 and retired. This
brought in Chairman Dave Cross who hit some excellent fours to quickly
get to 30 and retire. By then the scoring rate was going well and the
lower order all gave a good account of themselves and adding runs to
the scoreboard with Dallas Reid getting 8 not out. The squash team
proved that they have true hand eye coordination and managed to score
190 in the allotted 35 overs.
In March a combined HKFC and HKCC Squash section cricket team
was put together to test their true sporting ability against the HKCC
Taverners cricket team.
On a fantastic sunny day which was ideal for cricket the six HKFC
players had a little trepidation prior to the match due to in some cases
not playing since school which for most was a significant time ago.
The squash combined team won the toss and elected to bat first. A
slow start ensued with the Taverners team starting with too very tight line
and length bowlers which made it difficult to score easily. Rob Jones
(2 runs) who opened the batting was unlucky when a good full ball was
edged to slip and well held to bring in Keith Frith. As Keith is one of
the few players who regularly plays cricket his class showed by keeping
the scoreboard ticking over with some fine shots including some nice
With bowling being slightly more technical and less like a squash swing
than batting it was always going to be tough to keep the real cricketers
at bay which ended up being the case. The opening bowlers did well
keeping the run rate low with Keith Frith being very miserly and going
for 18 off his 5 overs. Dave Cross got two wickets with some nice on
the spot bowling showing his Yorkshire roots finishing with figures of 2
for 23. John Thompson managed to also get a wicket for 26 runs in his
5 overs and Malcolm showed that Scots can play cricket with a steady
9 off his 2 overs. Dallas ably kept wicket showing that he does indeed
have a good pair of hands.
The Taverners managed to get the runs with 6 overs to spare and won
the game. A great post cricket analysis of the game then ensued with
Rob Jones winning the team’s moment of the day for putting his thigh
pad on his wrong leg.
The day was so successful that a full HKFC squash team have been
asked back to play a HKCC squash team in the near future.
medal match 3-1 against Chinese University
HK in which Robinson Law, the former Hong
Kong Junior Open champion, played position 1
for the team.
In another pool, HK Baptist University (HKBU),
the dark horse and bronze medalist last year
were ably led by Wilson Chan (HKFC 3B) this
year. This university team was the giant killer
of the competition, first beating EduHK and
CUHK, then seeing off last year’s runner-up
PolyU in the last pool match. HKBU went on
and dethroned HKU 3-0 convincingly in the
semifinal and reached the final.
At the last day of the tournament, HKBU played
City University led by Jeff Leung (HKFC 8B)
in the final, which was a repeat of the semifinal
of last year. Both teams were unbeaten on the
way through to the final. Jeff who was a reserve
player in the final, led his fellow teammates
to beat HKBU 3-0 with the presence of Hong
Kong National Team member Wong Chi Him
playing in their number one spot.
UBB Gavekal claim back-to-back titles,
hosts Natixis HKFC lift Shield at GFI HKFC 10s
UBB Gavekal retained the Bill Burgess Cup at the 33rd GFI HKFC
10s when a late try by Fiji Sevens back Leveni Kurimalawai
secured a thrilling 24-17 win over a Tradition YCAC side dominated
by New Zealanders.
The all-Fijian Samurai squad secured the Plate, Hong Kong’s Taikoo Place
Scottish Exiles grabbed the Bowl and hosts Natixis HKFC defeated Irish
Vikings to win the Shield at the ‘Worlds Best 10s’, which took place on
Wednesday 4th April and Thursday 5th April.
UBB’s Fiji Sevens backs scored four tries in the final and proved to be the
difference as Samu Bale touched down for an early opener, Sakeo Raloa
then added two tries and Kurimalawai scored the winner after the sides
were locked at 17-17 at Hong Kong Football Club.
Representing Top 14 club Union Bordeaux Begles, UBB were surprise
winners last year, but this year lived up to their top-seed status as head
coach Matt Clarkin – the former UBB captain – led his side to a second
successive victory.
“We’re ecstatic. We’re ecstatic! We knew going back-to-back was going
to be an even bigger challenge than coming last year as underdogs, but
we thrived on that challenge and the boys showed up hungry and they
got the job done,” said Clarkin, whose five Fiji Sevens players included
forwards Keponi Paul and Vasikali Mudu.
“The Fiji guys did for us what they did for us last year, but our trademark
is working hard for each other. I think that’s still our strength and I think
you saw that in the final. To have three yellow cards against you and still
come out on top is a huge feat so I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
UBB ran out to a quick 12-0 lead with tries from Bale and Raloa, before
New Zealand’s Angus Gibbens pulled one back for YCAC. Raloa
extended UBB’s lead to 17-5 before tries by New Zealand’s Te Puoho
Stephens and Tonga’s Willie Fotofili made it 17-17, but Kurimalawai
scored late on to ensure captain Nick Smith was left lifting the Cup.
“It was the same thing as last year: we just came together as a tight unit,”
said Smith, who scored four tries from flyhalf, while compatriot Renata
Tenana also scored four tries over the two days.
“We’re all from different parts of the world, from Fiji, South Africa, New
Zealand and Hong Kong, but at the end of the day, it’s how you gel
together.”
Doddie Weir, the former Scotland and Lions lock suffering from Motor
Neurone Disease, walked out with the match ball for the final and was
presented with a HK$100,000 cheque for the My Name’5 Doddie
Foundation, the tournament’s official charity.
Natixis HKFC co-captains Tom Isaacs and Mitch Andrews lifted the
Shield after the hosts beat Irish Vikings 17-0. It was a popular victory
22 May 2018

RUGBY
for the home side after an impressive domestic season and a personal
triumph for Isaacs, a former Wales Sevens back who lost in the Plate final
twice when playing for Cardiff University in 2006 and 2007.
“We’re very happy. It was a tough two days, but we’re really proud of
the way the boys performed in the last two games. I got to the Plate
final twice before and actually lost against the Irish Vikings one time, so
personally it was nice for me to get that win,” said Isaacs, whose team
were boosted by former Australia Sevens speedster Josh Coward, who
scored three tries.
“Josh was a big asset. He’s an exciting player once he gets his hands
on the ball so it was one of our tactics to try to get it to him as quickly as
possible. He finished off some great tries and it was great to have him on
the ball.”
Fourth seeds Samurai International won the second-tier Plate as an all-
Fijian squad led by player-coach Nasoni Roko beat A-Trade Overseas
Old Boys 28-7. Samurai’s dreams of winning the Cup for the first time
were shattered by King’s College, who scored a last-play try to win a
dramatic Cup quarter-final 15-14.
Taikoo Place Scottish Exiles won a trophy for the first time at the GFI
HKFC 10s after the Hong Kong-based side beat Hunter + Boo East
Africans 38-7 in the third-tier Bowl final. Competing for the seventh
straight year, Scottish Exiles had finished runner-up in the Plate final three
times, so captain Jamie Pincott was delighted to finally lift a trophy.
“It’s been a long few years, especially hitting the finals a lot of the time and
coming away empty handed so it’s nice to have this win and to take the
trophy home,” said Pincott.
“You can really hear the crowd out here and its really great to play in
front of them so I really enjoyed it. It was great to be out there and East
Africans are a tough team. It’s good to see them develop over the years
and it was great to see them here
again.”
GFI has title sponsored the event
since 2006. Other sponsors and
suppliers for 2018 include Natixis
(Gold Sponsor), AIA, Allied World,
BT, DHL, Q-Net and Taikoo Place
(Silver Sponsors), CBRE, EY and
Markel (Bronze Sponsors), Last
Word Media, Volvo (Official Car),
Grolsch (Official Beer) and Samurai Sportswear (Official Apparel).
Inaugurated in 1986 to celebrate Hong Kong Football Club’s centenary,
the GFI HKFC 10s has long attracted the game’s top players including
seven All Blacks who won the 2015 Rugby World Cup – Conrad Smith,
Jerome Kaino (both 2003), Ben Smith, Charlie Faumuina (both 2008),
Beauden Barrett, Sam Cane (both 2010) and Nehe Milner-Skudder
(2013).
RUGBY
Tales from the Bush
by Jimmy Richards, Rugby Section Captain
What a great year it has been both on and off the field – League
titles, GC titles, GFI tens silverware and a packed Sporties
every Saturday. It’s been a very proud and humbling year
watching the efforts and spirit on display week in and week out there
and thanks to all the players, coaches, staff, old boys, Alikadoos and
everyone else who has contributed to this season.
A massive congratulations to the Bulls and Sequins for doing the double
this year – a truly sensational achievement and huge congrats to Sias,
Darling and Scott Lindsay for all their efforts over the last twelve
months not to mention Spizz for playing in both finals.
The Vandals tour in Yangon has made a tremendous difference to the
Zubuaye Monastery, located about 60kms outside of Yangon. The
Zabuaye Monastery School has resumed classes and operations,
thanks to the efforts of the HKFC Vandals rugby team who through
their support and assistance helped re-build the school which enrolls
more than a hundred students from aged 5 to 16. QNET and RYTHM
Foundation worked to fix up the classrooms at the school with support
from QNET business leaders and the HKFC Vandals. The school has
been refurbished with new roof, flooring, tables, chairs and teaching aids
and was officially opened on 31st January by the Chairman of QNET Mr.
Richard Zinkiewicz. Thanks again to Sean Purdie for everything he
does regarding the Vandals as it wouldn’t be the same without him.
Well done to Cameron Henderson who was selected to
represent Scotland U18s at the annual U18 festival in Wales
over Easter. Cameron was heavily involved in the wins
against England, France and Ireland and was awarded the
coaches Player of the Tournament. We wish Cameron the
best of luck for the future and hope to see him one day in
the Club colours playing in the GC finals.
Mini Rugby News
Message from Mini-Rugby Chairman
Another Hong Kong Sevens has passed, and many of our young athletes enjoyed the
experience of stepping out on the stadium pitch for the showcase games at the Hong
Kong Sevens; full year group reports and photo’s will follow.
Reports on the Minis Tour to Macau for the Macau BATS Festival (Saturday 14th April) and the
HKFC Invitation Youth Tournament (formerly the Taipan Day matches) on Saturday 21st April
should appear next month.
And we have later this month Club’s Mini-Rugby Tour to Singapore for U6 to U10 to
participate in the TRC Junior Cup Tournament, with U11 playing a number of “friendlies”
around that tournament.
For those who wondered, the 2017 / 2018 training season ends on Sunday 13th May.
Leaving the Minis Committee just over three months to prepare for the new season starting in
September ….. where did this season go!
Best
Denis Brock, Chairman, HKFC Mini-Rugby
Under 12B Girls
It was the mighty U12G FC 2 last festival for this
season and there was a quiet sense of purpose
amongst the squad – plate finals!
The squad got off to a slow start against SKS,
but the result motivated the squad to get back
up and keep trying to improve each and every
performance! Well, I always believed these
girls had heart, and I wasn’t disappointed! The
squad dug deep and pulled off three wins in the
next three games!
The whole squad deserves a mention for
effort and commitment! They missed a Plate
Finals spot by one competition point! Thanks
to all the parents for their support this season,
it’s been amazing! The squad itself showed
what self-belief can achieve, they pushed and
commitment to display true character! I’m so
proud of them – complete legends!
Pete Hudson
Under 12 - FC1
The Richard Hawkes finals was the competition
that we had all been waiting for. In the run up
to the competition, we had won four out of the
five tournaments and therefore were seeded
first. However, the season had been much
closer than the figures suggest and we had
fortunately developed a knack of winning the
closer matches. The slightly changed format
meant that there were four pool matches to
play. We started slowly against the Macau Bats
and were 1-1 after a couple of minutes but we
managed to pull away with some excellent team
tries to win 5-1. We then took on Sandy Bay
and an excellent display of passing led to some
superb tries, winning 5-1 in the end. Sai Kung
posed the biggest threat in the pool stages, and
the match was cut short due to injury, but we
still managed to score a try and take a 1-0 lead.
Our final pool match was against TCRC/SLB,
which we comfortably won 5-0. This set us up
for the semi-final against DBP. Unfortunately, a
few early calls went against us and we found
ourselves on the wrong end of the scoreline
in the first half. Despite sustained pressure
and some excellent play in the second half we
weren’t able to close the gap. Whilst we didn’t
win the big one, the boys should be very proud
of their performances throughout the season
and the way in which their rugby has developed
throughout the season. They have shown great
commitment, spirit and teamwork and have
been a pleasure to coach.
Barney Durrant
Under 11
The Under 11 boys were stationed down at the
end of Happy Valley for our home festival, the
weather stayed kind and our parent volunteer
pitch monitors (thanks folks) were resplendent
in their high-viz vests, clipboards clutched tight
to their chests. This was the last festival for
this group of lads, many of whom have played
together since Under 6 days, as we move to
Richard Hawkes for Under 12 next season
and so it was important for them to enjoy
themselves. They certainly seemed to do that
and played some rugby along the way to boot.
The Spartans capped off a fine season with
three straight wins (including a comprehensive
one over Valley). The Firebirds eased past
USRC Tigers, couldn’t quite see off Sandy Bay
who got a late score to claim a draw but then
mysteriously went off the boil to let the other
Valley team even out the results on the day
(spiked Bonaqua anyone?). The Cobras really
came to the party, for the first time showing
some real intent and aggression in their play
which helped them work together to blow
away their opponents. Last but not least our
combined Mustangs and Chargers team (or
“Mustards” as they renamed themselves, for no
obvious reason) – they had a slow start but in
patches showed us what they have learnt this
season and if they had played all afternoon like
they played in the last ten minutes of their last
game then their results would have been very
different. A fantastic finish to the season boys.
Collectively the squad has developed really well
over the season – they are more physical and
have much more shape to their game – and
their coaches are very proud of their efforts.
Thanks from me to all the coaches for their
unstinting efforts over the season – I am sure
the parents feel the same way, and even some
of the players too!
Simon Cooke U11 Head Coach
U9G FC1 Girls
Coach Derek and Coach Pete were excited
to be back on the old sod for the annual home
tournament. The girls were also in good spirits
given the uncharacteristic late start in midafternoon!
With four games ahead we would
need the efforts of the whole squad including
Lucy Duncan, who played for both teams.
We started with the University “students” who
needed a lesson or two. The mercurial Lexie
Durrant, and hard charging Sophia Li, were
key to a great victory. Valley up next proved
tougher, and despite the tough tackling Ella
Fong, and Sophie Titterington’s towering
strength, we went down to the old nemesis.
Bouncing back, we took it to the other group of
Uni youngsters, with the ever reliably aggressive
Hannah Gibbs, and the tenacious Rachel
Chan providing a boost. We finished with a
huge victory against the other ‘Club’ folks from
the SCAA, with a few classmates of our team
on the opposition, Evie Spizzirri was vicious
in her tackles and uncompromising runs, while
the ever elusive Kelli Kong slipped through
defences with ease. Look forward to the next
one!
Peter Spizzirri
What a fantastic day of mini rugby was had at
our own HKFC festival!!!
Firstly, I need to say a big thank you to all the
parents who stepped up to act as officials on
the day, without your support this event would
U10 F1
simply not run. As always a big thank you to the
U10 coaches. The final thank you goes to Rich
Lingard the organiser of the whole day. Great
job.
We really mixed things up for our festival,
instead of our usual six teams, two each from
the Panthers, Jaguars and Cheetahs, we gave
our two Singapore bound teams a chance to
play together. Hence we collapsed the groups
and created six new ones, two Sing, two Lions
and two Tigers. As you can imagine most teams
were a little unsure during their first game,
but they all grew into every match as the day
developed. A true sign of increased maturity
from our players. Some great performances
were witnessed, one in particular from FC4 one
of our Singapore teams, the passing and team
work was amazing considering they’d really just
been thrown together on the day.
Well we are nearly at the end of the mini rugby
season, sometimes they feel long, this U10
one feels the shortest ever, time has flown this
year. Rather than fill the rest of our page with
more rugby chat, I’ve decided to fill it with team
photos. Please ask your child to see if they can
spot themselves.
Under 9
Another year passed and another fantastic day
for Rugby. The weather started to be a little dull
in the morning but that soon changed once the
teams had warmed up.
We started the day with the B Teams for once
and this was a show stopper. Football Club FC4
Leopards produced some of the best rugby I
have seen for a B Team in all the festivals. With
three games in front of them they played as if
their lives were on the line.
Players to mention for this tournament and
team: Elliot Munt, Ryan Kar, Adrian Ng all
outshone the opposition with their drive and
passion and tackling. Elliot was the principle try
scorer for this team and this was all through the
hard work of the pack passing the ball out wide
to him.
Also, special mention to Jayden Ong and
Marcus Norris who drove deep to gain the
momentum to push each team back and
eventually getting the ball out to the wing and
young Elliot. The games were all intense and full
of passion which capped a great day for the B
U9
U10 F6
Teams, three great wins and some happy faces
at the end.
Next up we saw the A Teams come into
play. For this there was one young lad in the
Buzzards that shone like a light. A true rugby
player in the making, Leon Delespierre. Wow!
can this boy play or what, running from the
wing to make some crucial tackles just before
the try line to stop the opposition from scoring.
Running the full length of the pitch to score
some beautiful tries and getting stuck into the
rucks, great to watch.
Worthy mentions must also go to, Jastin Lu,
Silas Torka and Jonathan Law, all played with
eminence passion and drive for their team. This
team had the lucky day with four games and all
with tough opposition, three wins and one draw
saw there day finish well and to watch was a
great enjoyment.
Over all the rugby standard has improved
100% since the first festival, referee standards
commanded by chief Referee Paul Murphy
was outstanding and very well run. Consistency
across the games was well kept and I thought
the whole standard was amazing.
A huge thank you to all the U9 coaches for the
help in setting up the show and running it like
clockwork.
Also, to those parents that helped through the
day especially the hotter queen Elise, and no
she doesn’t work in a bar…….
To Richard and Evan for their set up of the
event and to Chairman Denis for the support for
the Mini Rugby section.
Thanks to all,
MINI RUGBY
Under 8
The Under 8s were afforded a novel change
of scene during our home tournament by
playing on the newly-opened Pitch 1 behind
the Club’s south Stand. The sense of occasion
provided from hosting the event was not lost
on the kids, as they stepped up to make the
most of the idyllic conditions and once again
put their skills to the test during their three
slightly elongated games; for some of the boys
it provided the additional challenge of reverting
back to touch tackling, having embarked on
full contact training since the beginning of the
year in preparation for May’s tour to Singapore.
However, it seemed to have benefited them
to once again need to think about the other
aspects of the game such as finding space and
passing, and not just smashing seven bells out
of each other!
The Phoenixes reported mixed results during
both their allotted games and the extra ones
that they were given to play, but with great
performances seen from the likes of Romane
Bruneau, whose nimble feet got her across the
try line on numerous occasions, Mia Caves
and Karin Wong with their support play, Grace
Cheung with her fearless tackling and Iris
Greenwood with her spatial awareness and
knack for reading the game. Similarly positive
performances were observed in the Hawks
with their strong defence work that resulted in
countless turnovers, their running forward and
passing into space near the opposition’s try line.
In particular, James McSheaffrey stood out for
his solid tackling, and both Anthony Wickens
and Tom Bailey really turned on the pace for
the event. Matthew Phillipson also took the
award for Best Dressed, mentioned as he was
in one coach’s report for having arrived at the
tournament in a red velvet blazer and “showing
a touch of class for the home tournament”!
Overall it was another fun, successful and well
organised and run tournament, none of which
could have happened without the commitment
and dedication of all the parents who
contributed towards the event in every aspect.
A massive, heartfelt thank you to you all!
Under 7
The HKFC Mini rugby tournament was a great
outing for the U7 Cheetahs. Almost all of the
Cheetahs participated in the tournament,
which is not surprising given that attendance at
training has been phenomenal throughout the
season. The FC6 Cheetahs first game of the
day was early in the morning and it showed on
the pitch. The players were still waking up, and
conceded a try before anyone really noticed.
The Cheetahs took one back with a score by
Daniel Swemmer, and then conceded again.
The defensive line was not quick to form, but
the team moved well forward in offence. The
game ended 2-2 with Thomas Wood scoring
the other try for the Cheetahs.
The second game was against Sai Kung
Stingrays, and Coach Derek Wyllie took the
players to task. A ten minute pre-game talk
ensured that all players were ready for battle.
The final result was a convincing 4-2 win for
the Cheetahs, with tries from Amy Yu, Liam
Norman, Silas Tam and Daniel Swemmer.
By the last game of the day the players were
alert, motivated and focused on keeping the
defensive line, passing the ball quickly, closing
the space in defence and moving forward in
attack. With both defence and offence working
well, the Cheetahs had a convincing win 6-2 win
against the Aberdeen Dolphins. What was more
impressive was that four different players scored
the tries – namely James Raper, Freddie
Pollard, Thomas Wood (x3) and Viktor
Schultz; three of these boys had their first tries
of the season. That is teamwork and team spirit
at its best.
The other Cheetahs squad, FC5, was
comprised of 11 excellent players, of which
eight scored tries! Sasha Rayton and Jonathan
Wan merit special mention for good defensive
work during all three games. It was good team
work and spirit and all players deserve credit. It
was as ever, a fun and active morning of rugby
for the kids and for the many parents who came
to support, many of whom (mums) were very
engaged from the sideline. In summary it was
another great rugby morning!
Under 6 Panthers
The Panthers had been looking forward to this
tournament all year, and with a great response
from the squad, we were able to run out two
competitive teams. FC6 were first out of the box
and as a team where many of the players are
in their first season of rugby, they did us proud
by winning one game against Hong Kong East,
drawing another with SCAA, and narrowly losing
the third to strong opposition from the Macau
Bats. Special mention to Conor Whybrow who
displayed tremendous enthusiasm, courage
and energy, like an Energizer Bunny, in all
games despite being the smallest player on
the field. FC6 have developed tremendously,
but above all, they’ve all enjoyed their rugby
in the 2017/18 season. FC4 had yet another
outstanding tournament. In game one against
Tai Hang Tung, Liam Booth collected from
the kick off, stepped twinkle-toe’d through the
defensive line and dived over the line. Final
score, 6-0 to Panthers FC4. In the second
game against Valley the boys were up against
it when Valley put on two early tries. The team
regrouped and two pacey tries from Dylan
Akandu and a dazzler from Ethan Pimlott saw
Club take the match 3-2. The final game saw
FC4 come up against SCAA. Great defense
from the two wingers, Schyler Tam and Riku
Shiotani saw FC4 run out their final game of the
day 5-2 winners. For Panthers FC4 this was a
remarkable day – the team have now gone two
full seasons undefeated, and to do it on “home
turf” made it all the more memorable!
U5
The HKFC Mini Rugby tournament was only
the second tournament of the year for the U5s.
Nonetheless, it was clear that all of the girls
and boys were moving in the right direction
(most of the time!) and quickly picking up on the
fundamentals of the game.
Attendance and team spirit was excellent and
what is most important was that everyone had
a lot of fun.
The four HKFC U5 teams were led by excellent
coaches, including Jerome Leleu, Paul
Douglas and Simon Archer-Perkins, to
name but a few of the coaching staff. Special
thanks to the Parent Pitch Monitors, including
Grace Baudy, Tony Adams, Gary Howard,
Michel Bots, Jorge Martinez, Simon Law and
Jen Flowers, who made sure all games ran
smoothly.
The teams’ performances clearly bode well.
Captain
Hello all,
I hope you have all had a great Easter break.
The soccer season is drawing to a close and the
Club has won two titles. Like the top leagues
in Europe, this season’s victors have won their
respective leagues at a canter. HKFC 1st Team
has won the HKFA 1st Division in emphatic
style with five wins out of five in March/April
putting the league beyond the chasing pack.
Club Wanderers have won the Yau Yee League.
Unbeaten until March it would have taken
a super comeback in the mould of Albion’s
14 match winning streak in 16/17 season to
challenge them but Wanderer’s proved too
strong and are deserved champions.
Yau Yee League
This month we feature articles on the HKFC
Citi Soccer Sevens. The Club has two teams
entered into both the main and the vet’s
competitions. Managing the HKFC 1st team
will be Tony Hamilton-Bram with John Casey
and Stephen Tucker assistants. Danny
Beattie and Terry Harris will take charge of
the Captain’s Select for the first time. Mark
Grainger and Graeme Lane will take charge
of the HKFC Vets team, while Graeme and
Jan Souleyman will take charge of the Vets
Captain’s Select side. It is the highlight of the
to seeing you all down there on 16th to18th
HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens
Returns In Style
By Michael Church
Defending champions Leicester City and newcomers Brighton
& Hove Albion are among the headline acts as the HKFC Citi
Soccer Sevens prepares to kick off in May.
The three-day event – now in its 19th year – runs from 18th-20th May
and features sixteen teams in the Main Event and a further ten in the
Masters competition as teams and players from around the world
converge on Sports Road.
“Once again we’re delighted to unveil a wonderful line-up of clubs for
this year’s HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens,” says Tournament Director Chris
Plowman.
“We will be welcoming back many old friends while witnessing some
fresh new talent on the pitch at Sports Road.
“We are very pleased to announce that Brighton & Hove Albion will be
joining us for the first time while reigning champions Leicester City will be
back to defend their title and Cagliari will return after making their debut
last year.
“In total six teams from Hong Kong, including two from HKFC, will be
joined by teams from England, Scotland, Italy, Japan, Australia and
New Zealand in what promises to be another thrilling HKFC Citi Soccer
Sevens.”
The HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens was first held in 1998 and the 2018
edition represents the 19th running of the tournament after the 2003
event was cancelled as a result of the SARS outbreak.
Leicester City defeated Aston Villa in last year’s final and the 2016
Premier League champions will be represented again at this year’s
event, where they will look to successfully defend the title.
“Leicester City Football Club is looking forward to attending this year’s
HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens,” said Ian Cawley, Leicester City Academy
Manager. “Over previous seasons, the club has enjoyed magnificent
success in Hong Kong, notably winning the Cup in 2013 and 2017.
“As such, we are delighted to be returning to Happy Valley this year to
defend our crown and to compete against some of the most exciting
talent from across the globe.
“Following our success last May, the Development Squad have
impressed domestically and the opportunities provided by the HKFC Citi
Soccer Sevens are always of an extremely high standard.
“The demands of the tournament, its unique format and the challenges
posed all contribute to a thrilling and useful week of competition for our
young players.”
Aston Villa are the most successful club in the history of the event with
six title wins, the first coming in 2002. Further victories were achieved
in 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2016 before the club missed out on a
seventh success in last year’s final.
“We are delighted to have been invited to the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens
again,” says Aston Villa’s Academy Manager Sean Kimberley. “It’s such
a prestigious tournament which has been part of our club’s development
programme for a long time.
“We have been very fortunate to have had success in the tournament
over the years, with the most recent being in 2016. Although we fell at
the final hurdle last season we will be looking to go one better this time
round.
“More importantly for us, it’s about developing the players. Our history
and the tournament’s history show a number of players who have gone
onto be Premier League winners and top international players have
represented Aston Villa in this top class international tournament.”
Brighton & Hove Albion, meanwhile, will be making their debut during
a season that has seen the club mark their return to the top flight of
English football and the club’s academy manager, John Morling, is
relishing the challenge he and his players will face at the HKFC Citi
Soccer Sevens.
“Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club are honoured to be invited to the
prestigious HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens,” he says. “All the staff and players
are looking forward to coming to what will be a brilliant experience both
on and off the pitch.
“We are looking forward to a totally different experience playing Sevens
against some of the world’s best teams, which will benefit our players’
development in their ambition to become senior professional footballers
in the Premier League.”
Newcastle United and West Ham United will also travel to Hong Kong,
taking the number of English clubs due to participate to five, while
Scottish giants Rangers will participate once more.
Also returning are Cagliari Calcio from Italy, who made their tournament
debut last year, while Newcastle Jets, currently lying second in Australia’s
A-League, will make their first appearance along with fellow A-League
club Wellington Phoenix from New Zealand who will return to the
competition alongside the Singapore Cricket Club.
The overseas teams will be bolstered by a strong line-up from Hong
Kong, with Hong Kong Football Club fielding two teams – HKFC and the
HKFC Captain’s Select.
Hong Kong Premier League champions Kitchee, who have impressed in
recent weeks with their performances in the Asian Champions League,
will also be represented, with the Hong Kong Football Association having
a representative side playing as the HKFA Red Dragons. The Yau Yee
League Select will also return to the competition.
“Having been losing finalists on two occasions and Shield winners from
last year, it is always a hugely enjoyable week for both players and staff
alike,” says West Ham United academy manager Mark Phillips, whose
team defeated Cagliari in the final of last year’s Shield Competition.
“The HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens is a well-run event and we’ve struck up
some great friendships during our previous trips with several members
of the Hong Kong Football Club and we’re looking forward to our return
in May.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Ben Dawson of Newcastle United,
who missed last year’s competition having won the title in 2012 but who
return for the 2018 event.
“We are delighted to once again be invited to participate in the HKFC
Citi Soccer Sevens,” says Dawson, who is the Club’s Professional
Development Phase Coach.
“It is a great addition to our games programme and provides our players
with a fantastic opportunity to test themselves against a wide range of
opponents in difficult conditions given the heat, humidity and format of
play.
“In previous years we have competed well to get to the latter stages of
the competition and are obviously hoping that this year we can go even
further.”
Ten teams will also compete in the Masters tournament, which has in the
past attracted former stars such as ex-Liverpool and Ajax Amsterdam
playmaker Jari Litmanen, former England and Nottingham Forest
defender Des Walker as well as ex-England goalkeeper David James.
Last year’s event was won by the Citi All Stars, who successfully
defended their title, and they will return for the upcoming edition, when
they will face off against the returning playonPROS and last year’s
finalists Wallsend Boys Club.
Nottingham Forest Mobsters will be returning to the Master’s competition
along with Singapore Cricket Club Tigers, a Yau Yee League Masters
team, Discovery Bay, Kowloon Cricket Club and the HKFC Masters and
Chairman’s Select.
Men’s E Team –
close but no cigar!
Post the Christmas break, the team put together a strong second half
of the season, ultimately falling just short of title glory. With 7-1, 9-1
and 6-1 wins to end the year we comfortably got Jonny Brock to the
top of the goal scoring table in Division 2, only to discover there isn’t a
golden stick trophy on offer. Jonny is already in active discussion with the
association to rectify this going forward.
Throughout the season we had some highly entertaining matches,
including an Antlers side sporting a few Taiwan Internationals, a Dutch
side (who eventually finished top) that in both matches we led but
couldn’t hold on for the full 70 minutes, and finally a very satisfying
thumping of our nemesis from the prior season Punjab, with a combined
scorecard of 13-1. As we kick off another post-season recruiting drive,
we take a quick look back on this year’s additions and what they brought
to the team.
We were fortunate to have the services of two high quality German lads,
Alex Engel and Gustav Von Schiller (GVS) who brought us youth, pace,
enthusiasm and in Alex’s case some very handy overhead skills out of
the backline. This was particularly evident on the ‘non-regulation size’
KCC ground where he could comfortably lob the ball into the attacking
circle from our defensive 16-yard line.
With the loss of Jun to Mongolia and our young guns to the D team, we
recruited Sim Archer-Perkins and Rob Wilkinson from the so called
‘higher’ grades. They both agreed on the premise of getting their photos
on the Club wall and whilst that will have to wait for next year, these two
gentlemen added a touch of class on game day – made all the more
impressive given their apparent aversion to training.
Lastly we’d like to acknowledge two upstanding Clubmen who across the
season seemed attracted to umpiring our games like moths to a flame.
Lyle Williams – thank you, we promise to continue to stick up for you
when your decisions are not as appreciated by our opposition as they are
by us. Charlie Poulton – thank you, however we can’t promise the same.
Men’s F Team – The season so far
This season has, to quote the well-used cliché, been a game of two
halves. A shocking start saw the Fs struggling with only 4 points
from seven games and staring down the barrel of a relegation battle.
However, mid-November saw a remarkable resurgence, from where we
have nearly finished the league season with 9 wins, 4 draws and 8 losses
and currently only 4 teams in the league have conceded fewer goals than
us. We are also, at the time of writing, on a 6-game unbeaten run (5 wins
and a 0-0 draw), with Jeroen Touw, the team’s normal keeper currently
on a run of 4 consecutive clean sheets and looking to extend that in the
upcoming cup game vs the Gs.
From being close to the bottom of the table we have recovered to a
very creditable mid-table mediocrity in what has been a very competitive
league. As things stand, we are 7th and have a shot at ending 6th. If only
we had one or two better results early on, against the bottom teams, we
would now be competing for 3rd or 4th place.
to Jun, Martin Wong and Rob Wilkinson (slumming it with the Fs) and
those of the Gs and Hs who’ve helped us out. Unfortunately, our season
was somewhat disrupted by injuries to “key” players – John Banks,
Lyle Williams, Fergus McCoig – and the list goes on, travel/work
commitments and (a first for the Fs) schoolwork! It’s noticeable though
that the Fs’ results have improved massively since Lyle has been out and
managing the bench, although he has left a huge hole in the middle of
defence.
Highlights of the season have included Phillip Von Luettichau making
his debut over on the Valley and having to throw up at half time –
hangovers are not an excuse! Excuse of the season from Raph Wong
that his mum wouldn’t let him out to play as he had to revise (great credit
to Raph for having the confidence to put that on the team Whatsapp!).
This was closely followed by – “sorry I’m off to Argentina for the polo
season” – from our resident playboy Russ Tyre.
This season saw the introduction of four players, who have come through
the junior section, to join the otherwise “experienced” squad of the Fs, in
schoolboys Raph Wong, Taha Boty, Long Him and Kailan Sharples.
All have contributed magnificently at various times and have improved
massively throughout the season, as well as seemingly growing inches
from one week to the next. We also got back Tony Mitchell, from his
exile in Macau, after having tapped him up by the lifts at last season’s end
of season party.
Whilst it would be nice to name check everyone who’s played for the Fs
this year, its somewhat impractical given that we seem to have used forty
odd players in total, including four keepers – thanks are due in particular
Although we haven’t scored as many goals as we’d like, especially early
on, 12 of our players have contributed and Neil Galloway is clear in the
lead for the golden stick with 9, although our last game and good cup
run could change that. However, as Shep found out, it is not wise for the
forwards to criticise the midfield for not giving them sufficient service, just
before a fines session, unless you really like Cointreau (as Piers Brunner
and Erik “Fiasco” Bernasco obviously do too)!
We have been ably supported by Lucho Portocarrero, from New York
through Whatsapp, and were sorry to lose an old stager in Clive Miners,
at the halfway mark, as he decided to gracefully drop down to try and
help out the Hs.
Message from the Ladies’ Captain
As with every year, as the season creeps closer to its conclusion, it
gets more and more exciting. Although the league competition has
been finished for all but the As and Bs for some time, the knockout
cup competitions and 5-a-side tournaments are keeping everyone else
busy! The Es and Dinos had very unfortunate draws in the Cup and
then the Plate (finding themselves up against tough opposition) and
did themselves proud, losing out only narrowly. At the time of writing,
they are preparing to take on the rest of their Division 2 opponents
(and, of course, each other) in the 5-a-sides at Happy Valley. The
Cubs experienced their only loss of the season in the knockout cup,
but then managed to return to winning ways and brought home more
silverware by smashing their 5-a-side. This was also Jojo Spooner’s
last game for them as she will head to the UK with mum Katy (D team)
and the rest of the family in the summer and so we were delighted that
she finished on a massive high! The Gs also had a tough cup run (up
against top of the league teams) but finished a very respectable third
place in their 5-a-side – clearly inspired by the English women at the
Commonwealth Games.
For the second year in a row, I am thrilled to report that we will
be seeing another Cs v Ds Cup Final at Kings Park. Both teams
convincingly won their respective semi-finals to secure their spots.
As finals weekend clashes with the Youth Olympic Games Qualifiers
in Bangkok, both teams will be missing a few
bodies, but it will no doubt be hotly contested and
feisty nonetheless. I look forward to reporting the
outcome next month!
With a league competition which seems to be
everlasting, the As and Bs continue to battle it out
with the other Premier Division teams. The As have
secured yet another Premier Division title, with a
3-0 win over second place Valley. The As have been clinical since
Christmas, scoring more goals than I can count and keeping clean
sheets in every game, and are very well deserved champions once
more. The Bs – who are safe in third place and unfortunately not able
to nick second place following a very narrow 1-0 defeat to the As
in their recent exciting and very tense fixture – are focusing on their
Holland Cup run (and, of course, hopefully securing points against
Valley in their final league game).
April was a very tough month for the ladies’ section, as we said
goodbye to three women who have contributed so much to life
at HKFC Hockey – whether it be over the short or long time they
were with us. Pat Chiu (A team), Caron Hughes (Dinos) and Izzy
O’Connor (B team) have all moved, or moved back, to the UK and
Ireland. We already miss them all terribly – not only for their
contributions to wider Section life, but also for their sterling
on-pitch efforts and for the laughs and shenanigans off-pitch
too. We hope to see you all back at HKFC soon (if only for a
visit!).
Fight hard in your last games, ladies – and make sure to
enjoy them too!
Happy 30th Anniversary to the Dinos
1988 was a very big year. To name but a few
significant things which happened:
• The slogan “Just Do It” was born.
• Eddie The Eagle won over hearts and
minds all over the world with his antics at
the Winter Olympics in Calgary.
• Die Hard was released.
• Kylie Minogue released her song “I should
be so lucky”.
And we at the Club were ever so lucky
because, in 1988, the Dinos were formed.
Of course, marking 30 years of the most die
hard hockey fans and tightknit group of friends
is one thing – it is a truly momentous occasion
after all. But for me, it is not just the on-pitch
hours which set the Dinos apart from the rest
of us mere mortals. It is the number of Dinos
who feature on the board of Ladies’ Captains; it
is seeing multiple Dinos donning their luminous
yellow shirts and whistles to officiate matches
week in, week out; it is the contributions they
have made and continue to make to the wider
hockey community in Hong Kong; it is the
Dinos always seen in the
stands cheering on their Club
mates; it is the fact that they
have the toughest selection
process of any team in the
Hong Kong league structure…
and of course, it is the
number of hours (and millions
of dollars) spent in the bar
after all the on-pitch battles in
those 30 years.
The Dinos do not understand
the “not my problem” attitude,
by which so many HK folks are afflicted and
instead they will always just do it themselves.
The Dinos represent everything that I love about
our fantastic Club, and we could all stand to
learn a lot from your relentless team spirit,
support for Hong Kong Football Club’s Hockey
Section and lifelong friendships forged from this
sport which brings us all together.
Dinos – you won over the hearts and minds of
the Hong Kong Football Club 30 years ago,
and I know that will remain the same for the
next 30 years. I was truly sorry to be unable to
toast your 30th Anniversary at your weekend
of celebrations at the end of April, but I hope to
toast it with you all at the End of Season Party.
I do know that you will celebrate in style – after
all, you have 30 years of practice!
From stitches to fractures to bedside
memorable one. We finished in a solid mid-table
position in the league, but are true division
winners when it comes to drinking anything rosé
flavoured at the bar (be it in fizzy, flat or tequila
form). Each game we played
was a close one, often with
the end result not reflecting
how well we played as a
team, as sometimes we just
struggled to find the back of
the net. We have had multiple
highlights, such as facing
our nemesis division winners
Antlers A multiple times and
playing them in a cracking
Cup game where we only just
lost on penalties. But it wasn’t all losses for the
E’s, as we bagged some great wins and most
of all showed great fighting team spirit! Plus,
there is more to come as the injurE’s take on
the Spartan Race, a 5-aside tournament and
TOUR (wondering what a Vietnamese hospital
looks like!).
A MASSIVE thank you to coach Stu and his
ability to hurl words of wisdom from the side
line. We are all glad you have survived another
season with us (just). Thanks also to Chappie
for his highly valuable ‘back to basics’ training
sessions. To our team captain Kim Roberts
(now a VIP member of A&E) and our vicecaptain
Zoe Belhomme, who will be more
than missed next season as she prepares for
the delivery of a future hockey star! These two
top ladies have provided words of wisdom
both on and off the pitch and we couldn’t have
completed the season as organised as we did
without them. And of course a big thank you to
our loyal support group that come every game
to drink, eat and watch us play! Bring on next
season, when the E’s will be fully recovered and
ready to attack at full force (especially if it’s a
gingerbread house..)
Aiko Henderson
Congratulations
Congratulations to our newlyweds, the
beautiful Leigh Cumings (Ladies’ A Team
Captain) and her husband Paul Harris, who
celebrated their wedding in South Africa
over the Easter break. Wishing you a lifetime
of happiness and smiles as big as those in
this gorgeous snap!
HOCKEY
Sportways – Hong Kong Hockey Camp 2018
When the Sportways team came back to Hong Kong in April
there was a wonderful quote that immediately came to mind…
or at least the part that matters most… “form is temporary, class is
permanent”.
Thomas Tichelman (Founder), Maarten Stenvers and Kyle Marks,
the dynamic Sportways coaching trio, arrived Sunday 8th April for a
week of master coaching at the Hong Kong Football Club. The fortunate
kids lucky enough not to be back at school that week were once again
treated to a fun-filled, technically challenging, highly stimulating week
of hockey. From 9am to 5pm kids aged 8-13 were put through their
paces. Be they watching the volunteer Coaches conduct their high flying
demo’s, taking on the technical skills, or enjoying the social team building
games and activities, every participant was engaged throughout the
week, and had a thoroughly thrilling week.
With all ages mixed into different social
groups, tournament teams and coaching
groups, the children became an increasingly
integrated and bonded group throughout the
week. As with all Sportways Camps, the Sportways HK experience
offered more than just an opportunity to up-skill. Whether it was taking
the group off-site to the Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple for a shared lunch,
introducing them to new social games and experiences, or simply being
coached by coaches from Holland, South Africa, Japan, England, Hong
Kong, India and Pakistan, the Hong Kong camp offered a unique and
enriching experience for all. We can’t wait for the team to return in 2019.
If you would like to know more about Sportways or you are interested in
attending one of their many overseas summer camps, more information
can be found at www.sportways.com. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
HOCKEY
The HKFC Hockey 6s was again a cracking weekend for all
who took part. Aside from the sublime hockey on show, DJ
Waleed, MC Jedi, the crew from F45, our massage team, the Lion
Dance team, and the crew from Sports Direct all added huge value
and were greatly appreciated for the support they provided. The
HKFC Staff and catering teams had everything spot on, and a huge
thanks to Sharpy, Lyle, Al, and Chappie for all of their ‘behind the
scenes’ organisation.
It was also a weekend of hello’s and goodbyes, as we welcomed
our touring teams yet said farewell to the Hughes Family. A mighty
send-off was had (one of many) for a family who’ve been dear to
us all during their time in HK. Hopefully there will be some guest
appearances at future 6s.
As the defending champion in this year’s Eve-Duncan Apple Trophy, a total of twentyfour
bowlers of mixed gender wearing the Club’s shirts fought fiercely against the strong
challenge put forward by Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC) in the final leg of the annual game
Report
HKFC Juniors Netball
Tassie Brakenridge
Netball DSA Chairperson
With the 2017-2018 season now finished, I
would like to firstly congratulate all of our
teams on working so hard throughout the
long season, and for your commitment to your team
and the DSA. The attendance this year has been the
most consistent in recent seasons, which all helps build
a strong club culture and enabled smooth transitions
of players between teams. The balancing act of having
players moving between teams is always a challenge
for the coaches, so thanks to our wonderful team of
coaches, Ron Arnold, Steph Cuvelier, Nic Viney, Iris
Chan and Kate Smith for working together to ensure
the strongest teams for the DSA. I also want to thank
our physio Kate Thorn, who has done a marvellous job
of keeping everyone on court and helping the injured
players recover as quickly as possible. Always a smiling
face, and certainly well loved by the teams!
In the off season, there is plenty of planning and
preparation for the 2018-2019 season, so if you are
interested in a position on the committee, please let
the secretary know, as the AGM is fast approaching on
5th May. If you have sponsorship enquiries or can offer
umpiring or coaching skills, please get in contact with
us at info@hkfcnetball.com
Finally, trials will be held in August, with dates to be
confirmed in the coming months. All updates will be
March 24th 2018
It was great to see everyone come out on the Saturday
for Grand Finals held in the Sports Hall, with big crowds
Division finals. Both Monsoons and Club competed hard
and with good sportsmanship, but were unable to bring
home the wins. The end results were;
U12s Lightning
HKFC Lightning girls applied lots of sun cream for their 3rd league game this term, on
this very warm, sunny Sunday lunchtime. The last time we faced ISF Dragons was at
the end of last season when we battled through to win the 3rd/4th place play off. The
girls started really well with our GS/GA shooting lots of successful nets. Going into
the 2nd quarter 5-1 up, the girl’s positivity and team work continued on the court and
their attacking and defending got stronger through each quarter. Each girl played their
position on the pitch with so much confidence which rightly earned them their 17-5
victory.
U12s Thunder
The girls gave it everything they had against the Hong Kong Cricket Club Ravens. We
were down a few players and so our girls had to step it up and play a whole game
on a hot afternoon. As usual the HKCC girls played an intense game and Alicia Koo
and Ruby Capone in defence made some amazing intercepts and rebounds giving
us some additional opportunity. Our centre court girls moved the ball well through
the court and getting through the HKCC defence in the goal circle proved tricky at
times. Once our shooters, Beca John and Emma Harries had the ball they hardly
missed a shot. We were neck and neck at half time but the heat got the better of us
and the girls lost to the Ravens 14 -11. A gutsy game to watch with huge grit and
determination from a great team of girls. Well done Thunder!
Golf News
HKFC Golf Society vs HK Seniors Golf Society
Monday 12nd March, Macau GCC
Gordon Mardsen, Warren Weener,
Ian Laidlaw and Clive Hunter.
Jukka’s putt – Yes, yes, yes ….. No
lipped out !
Andrew Wood, Kien Ng, John
Dibble and Robert Barber
Spooner on the drive
A
gorgeous spring day greeted the golfers from our two societies
as we headed to Macau. Twenty-seven degrees and the lightest
of breezes made for perfect golfing conditions. HKFC arrived to
find a very relaxed Seniors team who had travelled early only to find the
practice nets unavailable but a wholesome breakfast looked to have
removed any disappointment they may have felt.
Leading off for HKFC were Warren Weener and Gordon Marsden a
combination that had gelled well in the past for us. All square after 8
holes but not taking advantage of opportunities they were to find the
back nine far more challenging as Clive Hunter in particular hit his
straps parring 4 of 5 holes. He and Ian Laidlaw closed this one out in
HK Seniors favour 3 and 2 on the 16th hole to have the Seniors leading
after the first game.
Duncan Spooner was next out for HKFC with debutant Jukka Hakli. No
such problems for this pairing stretching out to an early 5 up lead after
8 holes combining very nicely. The back nine saw their opponents Leif
Markutza and Esmonde Corbet a bit more competitive but the match
was comfortably won 7 and 5. Clearly no nerves shown by Jukka who
seemed to feature on most of the near pin markers as well. A good start
to his competitive golf with HKFC and the match score back to 1 – 1,
balance restored.
The third contest saw Jonny Brock and Sam Shei matched against HK
Seniors’ Alan Tong on his own as his named partner was unfortunately
a late withdrawal. Assuming this would be a fairly comfortable lopsided
contest for HKFC with two golfers against one it was surprising to hear
from a slightly tense Mr Brock on the 8th green that they were hanging
in there and the match was all square. Indeed it wasn’t until the back
to back par 5s on 12 and 13 where Alan struggled for distance that the
HKFC pair were able to sneak ahead. They managed to hold onto that
lead and close it out 3 and 2 but not before they had been given a big
scare and full credit to Alan Tong for competing so well as a single against
the HKFC pair.
Anatole Le and JP Cuvelier were next up against Locus Lau and Russ
Julseth. With the volume of golf played in recent months by Anatole and
JP it was hard to know if they would be jaded or on top of their game. It
proved to be the latter with the HKFC pair easing out to a 3 up lead after
8 holes and kept that edge until Anatole closed out this match with a
birdie on the 16th to win 4 and 2.
One group left on the course and they had no idea of the results ahead
of them. Andy Wood and Kien Ng of HKFC against Robert Barber the
Seniors captain and his partner John Dibble. These opponents traded
blow for blow to be all square after 7 and scrapping hard to halve the
next 2 holes and still be all square at the turn after 9. The Seniors’ pair
of Barber and Dibble then eased out to a 2 hole lead only to see some
solid play and good putting by Andy Wood claw back two holes on 16
and 17 to leave them standing on the 18th tee all square. Still unaware
of the results ahead they had to play this hole as if the match hinged
on it. Kien Ng and John Dibble managed to remove themselves from
contention during the course of this long par 5 so we were left with Wood
and Barber on the green to both sink their short but significant putts to
appropriately leave this last contest a very honourable hard fought draw.
Alas for HK Seniors the overall match had already been decided after the
4th game concluded so the final result was HKFC winning out over HK
Seniors 3 and a half points to 1 and a half points.
A great day, excellent weather, a lot of fun and good competition with
3 matches being all square at the halfway point. There was probably
nowhere else any of these golfers would rather have been and the result
was almost unimportant - ……. Almost !!!!
Nearest Pin prizes on the day were won by Leif Markutza and John
Dibble of HK Seniors and Duncan Spooner, Gordon Marsden and Jukka
Hakli of HKFC.
Thanks as usual to Lee Parker and his very helpful team at Macau Golf
and Country Club for presenting a course in great condition and enabling
us to have such an enjoyably contested day of golf.
KSC East Outing
Monday 26th March
Allen Homeming taking aim at the tricky par 3 third
Helen aiming for the par four fourth green.
Nick Allen, Dallas Reid, Phil Head, Don Roberts, Helen Hayward
and Paula Wymond all set to start the day
This is the first event for March since the previous event to Nansha
was unfortunately cancelled due to insufficient participants. The
weather was magnificent with clear blue skies and the sun shining
warm and bright. As usual, we headed to KSC from HKFC at 7.30am in
the morning and arrived at 8.30am leaving plenty of time to grab a bite of
breakfast and have a little bit of warming up before our tee times.
We played in three flights with Dallas Reid, Phil Head, Don Roberts
and Nick Allen in the first group. As normal, we teed off with the low
handicappers on the theory that they would play the fastest, but to be
fair everyone kept up a good pace of play on a course that inevitably
takes well over four hours and thirty minutes because of the long drives
between holes and the frustratingly slow carts. Despite the lovely weather,
Dallas’ rather unimpressive 34 stableford points managed to sneak the
first prize. Perhaps everyone was too busy enjoying the amazing views
from the East course, possibly Hong Kong’s most spectacular course
on a nice day. He also managed to get the nearest to the pin on hole
8, a 180 yards long par 3 which, with a strong head wind, equated to a
regular 200 yards shot. At least the head wind made stopping the ball
easier as the greens were very hard and everyone struggled to stop their
approach shots bouncing off the back of the greens and into the usual
nasty reception awaiting long shots. He won it by 6 feet. Phil told me it
was a fluke. Well, that’s golf, there are good days and bad days all the
time. Today is a good day for Dallas!
Helen Hayward, Paula Wymond, Allan Homeming and myself
comprised the second flight. Paula and I had a wonderful start with
birdies on the first hole to get 4 points each. After the first nine holes, I
thought I was going to at least get a third place with 21 stableford points
leading and shot 41 on the front nine. However, the back nine was a
total disaster for me. Even my monster drive on hole 17 (long drive) was
beaten by Terry in the next group by few yards! Helen won the Hole 12
“nearest the pin in two” and the ladies long drive on the 17th. Whilst there
were only two ladies competing, her 230 plus yards uphill drive probably
beat most of the men!
Terry Wright pulled off some excellent shots despite not having fully
recovered from a sprained wrist finishing third and also winning the
longest drive on hole 17 and the Nearest to the pin on hole 3. Discretion
prevents me detailing how Terry injured his wrist, but if you buy him a
drink in the Sportsman’s he may explain it to you. Well worth it!
Phoenix Hill Outing
Thursday 12nd April
Phoenix Hill is located in Dongguan China, around 40 mins away from the Huangguan
border which meant leaving the HKFC earlier than previous events. We took off at 7am
from the Club and headed North! Traffic was excellent and we arrive at the border
smoothly. Our shuttle to Phoenix Hill was at 8.30am in the morning and luckily everyone was
earlier than expected.
On the way to Phoenix Hill, we were discussing the Masters championship, one of the majors
in golf and Sergio Garcia’s 13 on a par 5. It made us feel batter that a professional shot 8 over
par on a par 5. Suitably motivated, after our 50 minute drive, we arrived at the club house at
around 9.20am and we planned to tee off at 9.40am so we could get back early to catch the
3.30pm return shuttle.
The first to tee off were Jonny Brock , William King, Stephen Bottomley and myself.
Stephen and I paired up versus Jonny and William. It was a tough match and we were already
3 down after 6 holes. We tried to work our way round and we managed to decrease the deficit
to 1 down for the front 9. We thought we are going to get a few holes back on the back nine
especially with the par 3 holes. A4 would be the turning point of the match. We all hit a high
draw and the slope will get the ball down towards the hole and Stephen had a 6-foot putt for
birdie to turn the match. Unfortunately, he missed it and we all made pars on that hole. A great
match and Jonny shot 77 and William shot 81 to win the match 3 up. Congrats guys! William
and Jonny managed to get the first and second place in the match with 37 points and 36
points. No wonder we lost, they were just a better team. We surely want a rematch.
Jonny Brock blasting off
Everything ran smoothly and the second and third flights finished
15 mins apart and Allan Homeming managed to get a third place with 35 stableford points.
Badminton News
The AGC Badminton Team of British Army Visiting HKFC
On 4th March, the Badminton Society hosted a friendly match
with the badminton team from Adjutant General’s Corps (AGC),
a subdivision of the British Army which provides administrative
services. The visiting team comprised twenty-one players in their 30s
and 40s with a good mix of badminton skills. Thus, it made a good
opportunity to include our social players as well on the home team for a
total of thirteen games of various formats. It was then followed by several
more games with mix-and-match pairings of both teams. After the
match, both teams and other Badminton Society members gathered to
enjoy a sumptuous lunch.
Explaining Fixed Height Service Law
The Badminton World Federation
(BWF) started testing an
Experimental Service Law (Fixed
Height) from 1st March 2018. The
change to the Laws of Badminton
mandates that “the whole of the shuttle
shall be below 1.15 metres from the
surface of the court at the instant of
being hit by the server’s racquet”. The
previous rule stated that the “shuttle
must be below one’s waist when it is hit. To
be precise, the maximum height is with the
lowest part of one’s ribcage”. A specific
piece of equipment has been developed to
help service judges measure 1.15 metres
(see picture).
The move was inspired by the need to
overcome questionable decisions made by
service judges. They have come under heavy
fire by players and coaches worldwide for a
number of controversial decisions. Whilst the
BWF certainly needed to update this
specific service rule, the new rule has
come under criticism especially from tall
players who will need to make significant
changes to their technique in order to
stay within the regulations.
As mentioned this rule is still in the
experimental testing stage, it has not yet
been fully ratified and may see further
refinements before it is fully qualified and
written into the current laws of badminton.
As such local leagues are not mandated
to adopt this new regulation until the BWF
communicates the final version of the
service law.
