A VIEW

FROM THE TOUCHLINE

I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The

Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this

afternoon for our game against Crosfields in the National

Conference League Division Two.

We welcome the players, supporters and committee of the Soap to Woolston and hope

that they have had a safe journey across town and enjoy our hospitality today.

Local ‘derbies’ are always very eagerly anticipated by all involved and I am certain that

today will be no different. Both sides have started the season well, Soap are currently

top of the league whilst we are three points behind them in fourth place. It is great to

see both clubs pushing each other to be the very best that we can and it would be

brilliant if come the end of the season we occupy the top two places in the division and

can continue our rivalry at an even higher level next season.

Having said that there are plenty of other teams in this league that are capable of

claiming a promotion place so we know that we need to be performing at a high level

on a consistent basis if we want to be ‘in the mix’ at the business end of the campaign.

The two clubs have an excellent relationship, that is due to both of us having quality

people involved on and off the pitch, although for eighty minutes today we will be

enemies, but then afterwards we will have a drink together in the bar.

Due to several fixture changes, that we agreed to at the request of our opponents, this

is our last home NCL game until 18th June when we entertain Hunslet Warriors. That

will be our sponsors day and official past players re-union and we will be holding a

Race Night shortly after the game has finished. Please come along for what is certain

to be a great day.

Our NWML side are also at home today against Liverpool Lions in the NWML Trophy

2nd Round with that game kicking off at 12.30pm and will be a curtain raiser to the

NCL game. It has been a very ‘stop-start’ season so far but hopefully we can now have

a consistent run of games to enable the boys to get into their rhythm. We welcome

the Lizards to our club for the first time and hopefully it will be the first of many games

between the two sides.

You will see further in the programme the fixtures for our Junior teams who play

tomorrow. We have plenty of excellent players (and coaches) within our Junior ranks

so if you have a spare hour or two in the morning please try and get along and show

them your support, either here at Monks’/Hillock Lane or in one of the away games.

Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not

bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!!

Enjoy the game

The National Conference League have announced that Irish Sportswear brand,

O’Neills, are to be their Sportswear Partner for 2022 and beyond.

This agreement will see O’Neills Irish International Sportswear provide touch-line

apparel for all 48 NCL clubs that will readily identify official team coaches, trainers,

physios, and substitutes. O’Neills will also provide a dozen water bottles for each club.

Speaking of the partnership, Paul Berry, O’Neills UK Sales Manager said, “When

Trevor and the committee asked us to consider working with the NCL, we jumped at

the chance. We identified an opportunity to help highlight official team touch line staff

through the provision of coloured t-shirts, in a similar way to that in Super League and

International Fixtures. It was felt it would help referees and match officials to better

manage the touchlines and we were happy to oblige.”

“The community game is the heartbeat of the sport and we have been fortunate

enough to have been able to do business with a number of the NCL clubs over the past

few years which has allowed us to build up a strong portfolio of customers within the

Rugby League sector.

You now see O’Neills kit at every level of Rugby League from grassroots Under 7s

teams right through to some of the top teams within Super League and the NRL.”

“Last year it was great to see St Helens being crowned Super League Champions

wearing our kit and for Penrith Panthers being crowned NRL Champions - also in

O’Neills kit, just ten years after we entered the UK market.”

“O’Neill’s Sportswear are proud to be known as the brand leader globally within Rugby

League and we certainly felt that we wanted to put something back into rugby league at

community level to support the clubs, their volunteers and their players.”

Chair of the NCL, Trevor Hunt, added “It is fantastic that a company of the standing of

O’Neills, is partnering the National Conference League, and we are delighted to have

them on board. Every one of the NCL clubs will benefit from this, and it will certainly

add yet another high-quality element to the presentation of our competition.”

ROVERS APPOINT TROY BROPHY

AS CUBS HEAD COACH

Woolston Rovers Rugby

League Club are proud to

announce that they have

appointed Troy Brophy as

the new permanent coach

of our Cubs section (4-6

years old).

Troy’s experience of

coaching young children at

his own business, Rugby

Sprogs, made this decision

a simple one for the club to

offer him this position.

Rovers Junior Chairman

Mark Robinson said, “We

realised, with Jonathan

Pennell and Adrian Crocket

stepping up to take on the

2022 newbies, that we had

to step in and make a call

on the direction we wanted

the cubs to take going

forward.

Once we knew that Troy was interested in taking on this role then it was a no brainer;

with his experience and enthusiasm for coaching at that age it was a perfect match for

us. We can now build a healthy number of children coming into our age groups and

ensure that Woolston remain Warrington’s number one community club for the number

of boys and girls playing the greatest game.

WOOLSTON ROVERS 42 BARROW ISLAND 28

(NCL 09/04/2022)

Woolston Rovers turned in a dazzling attacking display to claim a hard-earned victory over

high-flying Barrow Island in a real end-to-end thriller in the National Conference League Division

Two at the Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club on Saturday afternoon.

Rovers opened the scoring after nine minutes when winger Kieran Jones, on his return to the club

following a stint playing in France, managed to twist in the tackle and score on the left. Scrum half

Chris Forster converted but then five minutes later Island hit back when a long ball out wide found

full back Jake Stockdale who put centre Adam Ford over in the right corner.

Midway through the half Rovers substitute Sam wood was held just short and from the play the

ball hooker Adam Files wet from dummy half and forced his way over. Forster converted but

then on the half hour mark Rovers fumbled a kick and Island substitute Sam Jones kicked ahead

and winger Aidan Wright was quickest to react and grounded the ball in the right corner. Stand

off Adam Jackson added the touchline conversion to make the half time score 12-10 in Rovers

favour.

Four minutes into the second half a superb spiral kick from Rovers stand off Theo Holt was

allowed to bounce and substitute Callum Moore pounced to score. Forster converted and three

minutes later nice play between Rovers prop forward Harry Files and loose forward Ryan Brown

got their side to the Island line and a quick play the ball saw A Files go once again from dummy

half and spin in the tackle before scoring. Forster added the conversion.

The visitors were in no mood to lie down and they came roaring back with tries either side of the

hour; the first came when they spread the ball down the left side and second row Dan wright

scored in the corner and that was soon followed by a try from Stockdale who collected a chip over

to score. Jackson landed both conversions to narrow the deficit to just two points.

Rovers edged further ahead once again when a strong drive by H Files was rewarded as A Files

again scooted from dummy half to complete a fine hat trick. Forster converted and then with a

minute remaining A Files turned provider as his run from dummy half saw him put brother H Files

through a gap to score. Forster completed a perfect afternoon with the built with his seventh

conversion to make the final score 42-28 to Rovers.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers second row Paul Alcock. He was very well

supported by hooker Adam Files and prop froward Wez Lawton.

HUNSLET WARRIORS 19 WOOLSTON ROVERS 19

(NCL 23/04/2022)

Woolston Rovers returned from Hunslet Warriors with a hard-earned draw after both sides were

unable to be separated following a pulsating end-to-end encounter in the NCL Division Two on

Saturday afternoon.

Hunslet opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a try from full back Josh McLelland but Rovers

responded almost immediately when hooker Adam Files went over for a try. Full back Morgan

Williams added the conversion.

The home side edged back in front just after the midway point of the half when prop forward Dale

Bateson scored. Stand off Jordan Gale converted but then two minutes before the break Rovers

winger James Tarpey went over for a try. Williams added the conversion to give Rovers a narrow

12-10 half time advantage.

Four minutes into the second half Rovers increased their lead when second row Paul Alcock

scored. Williams converted but then six minutes later Hunslet hit back when Gale went over for a

try that he converted himself and he also added a penalty to tie the scores at 18-18.

With two minutes remaining Rovers looked as if they had claimed both points when stand off Theo

Holt landed a drop goal but Hunslet had other ideas and substitute Matt Scott replied with a drop

goal of his own to make the final score 19-19.
