A VIEW

FROM THE TOUCHLINE

I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The

Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this

afternoon for our game against Hunslet Warriors in the

National Conference League Division Two.

We welcome the players, supporters and committee of Hunslet to Woolston and hope

that they have had a safe journey across town and enjoy our hospitality today.

This week we lost and absolute club LEGEND with the sad passing of our Club President

Harry Crank. Harry was a stalwart of this club from its inception in 1959 and his

memory will live on forever. He has been a massive part of my life for over 50 years

and I know that my dad (Warren Whalley) and Harry were inseparable down at the

club; wherever you saw Harry then my dad wasn’t far away. A true friendship that could

not be bettered and he will leave a huge hole in my dad’s life. Elsewhere in the programme

there is a fitting tribute to Harry from our current Club Chairman Steve Moore

and I know that the words that he has spoken are echoed by everybody at Woolston.

God bless you Harry and thank you for everything. Harry’s passing is on the back of us

also losing club stalwart Derek Bailey, Stewart Jones and Brian Heesom recently. All of

their families and friends are in thoughts.

Following consultation with Harry’s family there will be a minute’s applause held at all

Woolston Rovers games this weekend as a mark of respect for our club legend. There

will of course be a fitting tribute and a lasting memory in Harry’s name announced in

the very near future.

Today’s game is our annual Sponsors Day and Past Players’ Reunion and we are

delighted to welcome our generous sponsors and many past players’ from each era

since we were formed and we hope that you all have an enjoyable afternoon with us.

The planned Race Night this evening has been postponed and will now take place on

Saturday 16th July following our home game with Bradford Dudley Hill.

The game against Hunslet promises to be an absolute cracker; we drew 19-19 at their

place in April and I am sure that today will be another closely fought game. Hopefully

from a Woolston perspective we can claim the two league points to keep us in touch

with the teams above us. It really is an exciting league this season.

You will see further in the programme the fixtures for our Junior teams who play tomorrow.

We have plenty of excellent players (and coaches) within our Junior ranks so if

you have a spare hour or two in the morning please try and get along and show them

your support, either here at Monks’/Hillock Lane or in one of the away games.

Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not

bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!!

Enjoy the game

The National Conference League have announced that Irish Sportswear brand,

O’Neills, are to be their Sportswear Partner for 2022 and beyond.

This agreement will see O’Neills Irish International Sportswear provide touch-line

apparel for all 48 NCL clubs that will readily identify official team coaches, trainers,

physios, and substitutes. O’Neills will also provide a dozen water bottles for each club.

Speaking of the partnership, Paul Berry, O’Neills UK Sales Manager said, “When

Trevor and the committee asked us to consider working with the NCL, we jumped at

the chance. We identified an opportunity to help highlight official team touch line staff

through the provision of coloured t-shirts, in a similar way to that in Super League and

International Fixtures. It was felt it would help referees and match officials to better

manage the touchlines and we were happy to oblige.”

“The community game is the heartbeat of the sport and we have been fortunate

enough to have been able to do business with a number of the NCL clubs over the past

few years which has allowed us to build up a strong portfolio of customers within the

Rugby League sector.

You now see O’Neills kit at every level of Rugby League from grassroots Under 7s

teams right through to some of the top teams within Super League and the NRL.”

“Last year it was great to see St Helens being crowned Super League Champions

wearing our kit and for Penrith Panthers being crowned NRL Champions - also in

O’Neills kit, just ten years after we entered the UK market.”

“O’Neill’s Sportswear are proud to be known as the brand leader globally within Rugby

League and we certainly felt that we wanted to put something back into rugby league at

community level to support the clubs, their volunteers and their players.”

Chair of the NCL, Trevor Hunt, added “It is fantastic that a company of the standing of

O’Neills, is partnering the National Conference League, and we are delighted to have

them on board. Every one of the NCL clubs will benefit from this, and it will certainly

add yet another high-quality element to the presentation of our competition.”

CLUB PRESIDENT HARRY CRANK BEM

REST IN PEACE

As Chairman of Woolston Rovers Rugby League Club it saddens me greatly to hear of

the passing on Wednesday morning of our club President, Harry Crank.

I want to start by offering mine and the clubs deepest and

most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Harry has been involved with the club since it’s inception

in 1959 in one capacity or another. He has been a

constant figure around the place who was always willing

to help the club he loved in any way he could. He played

in the early years, he coached, he has been President,

but he also fundraised, donated money himself, he was

at every work party that was ever organised as well as

plenty of occasions when he went down to the club on

his own, or with his good friend Warren Whalley to carry

out pitch and clubhouse maintenance.

Harry did all of this whilst at the same time, fundraising

for the Warrington and Birchwood Lions and

raising a loving and caring family, and latterly

caring for his ill wife, Joan.

I have been involved with Woolston for

around 15 years and in that time I got to

know and love Harry, as did everyone

that came through the club. I was

honoured to receive the President’s

award from him and just as honoured

and proud to present him and Warren

with the Clubman of the Year Award

a couple of years ago.

The word legend is banded about

far too easily but to myself and

everyone involved with the club,

the word was made for Harry Crank.

Rest in peace H, you will never be

forgotten at our club. You will forever

be the Grandfather of the Green and

Gold family x

(NCL 30/04/2022)

Woolston Rovers went down to a local ‘derby’ defeat to Crosfields in the National Conference

League Division Two in front of a very large crowd at the Limestone Construction Field, Monks

Sports Club.

Soap got off to the prefect start when they opened the scoring in the second minute; they ran the

ball on the last tackle and full back Jamie Abram jinked through the defence and passed to centre

Kane Ditchfield who scored on the left and then seven minutes later a smart pass from scrum half

Joe Barnes found prop forward Tom Millington who crashed over on the left. Stand off Jack Lewis

added the conversion.

Crosfields moved further ahead when second row Dean Beddall broke through the rovers defence

to score on the left. Lewis converted and then Rovers had full back Morgan Williams sin binned

for a professional foul and from the resulting penalty a long ball out wide found winger Jack Fox

who scored in the right corner.

Rovers were then temporarily down to eleven men when substitute Josh Sudlow was yellow carded

for hitting out and another long pass out wide found Fox in space to score in the right corner

but then when Rovers were back to their full complement they got themselves on the scoreboard

when a lovely offload from Sudlow found loose forward Ryan Brown who put centre Dan Fearnley

through a gap to score wide out on the right and make the interval score 24-4 to Crosfields who

ended the half with twelve men following the sin binning of substitute Tom Brown for a late hit.

Five minutes into the second half rovers went over once again when a nice offload from hooker

Adam Files found pro forward Harry Files and he turned Abram inside and out before scoring

under the posts. Williams converted but four minutes later Crosfields regained the momentum as

Barnes found a gap to score at the side of the posts. Lewis added the conversion.

Just after the hour mark a high kick from Barnes was hacked on and Lewis pounced on the ball to

score. He converted his own try and then five minutes later substitute Brad Stanway went through

the line to score. Lewis converted and then with four minutes remaining Rovers substitute Sam

Wood and Crosfields Lewis were sent off for punching as the visitors celebrated a deserved 42-10

Woolston Rovers ‘A’ produced an excellent display to claim a very big win over Liverpool Lizards

in the NWML Trophy at the Limestone Construction Field, Mon Sports Club to move into the last

eight.

Liverpool opened the scoring in the first minute when centre Taylor Clare broke free to score

following a penalty. He converted his own try but shortly afterwards they had loose forward Ollie

Cope sin binned for a professional foul and Rovers took advantage of the extra man as stand

off Chris Forster found centre Dan Griffiths who powered through the defence to score. Forster

added the conversion.

Just before the half hour Rovers moved ahead when a ball out from Forster found full back James

Tarpey in support and he raced through a gap to score on the left and then nine minutes before

the break pressure on the Liverpool line was rewarded when Forster put D Griffiths over in the left

corner to make the half time score 14-6 to Rovers.

Eight minutes into the second half a break by Rovers second row Craig Lawton found substitute

Aaron Barber in support and he found hooker Tom Gaskell who scored on the left. Forster converted

A much-changed Woolston Rovers side travelled to Wakefield and put in a spirited display as they

fell to defeat at Normanton Knights in the NCL Divisions Two.

Normanton opened the scoring after seven minutes when centre Liam Sheridan crossed for a

try. Winger Joe Crossland converted and then nine minutes later prop forward Luke Molloy found

second row Stuart Biscomb who scored. Crossland added the conversion.

The home side moved further clear when substitute Adam Biscomb pounced on a Rovers handling

error to score. Stand off Joe Abson converted but then six minutes before the break Rovers

loose forward Harry Files sold a ‘dummy’ to the Normanton defence and he stepped through the

gap to score under the posts. Stand off Aaron Barber added the conversion to make the half time

score 18-6 to the Knights.

Three minutes into the second half Rovers were awarded a penalty and hooker Adam Files

tapped the ball and went on his own to score under the posts. Full back Morgan Williams converted

and five minutes later fine work from A Files saw him put winger Kieran Jones over in the

corner to narrow the gap to just two points.

Normanton restored their supremacy shortly afterwards when winger Aaron Clark scored in the

corner. Abson converted and five minutes later scrum half Kieran Hinchcliffe added another try

and Abson tagged on the extras.

(NWML 07/05/2022)

Woolston Rovers ‘A’ produced a brilliant all-round team performance to claim a very impressive

victory over a high-flying Rochdale Mayfield ‘A’ side in the NWML Division Three at the Limestone

Construction Field, Monk Sports Club.

Rovers opened the scoring in the second minute when they forced Mayfield into touch and from

the scrum a long ball from scrum half Chris Forster found centre Troy Brophy who carried four

men with him over the line to score wide out on the left. Forster converted and then five minutes

later hooker Elliott Best found second row Ryan Palin and he forced his way over wide out on the

left from close range.

Rovers had loose forward Cameron Davies sin binned for a shoulder charge shortly afterwards

and Mayfield made the extra man count as prop forward Matthew Browne made a thirty metre

break that split the rovers defence to score on the right but then an error from the restart by Mayfield

gave Rovers the ball and Palin powered over under the posts with four men in attendance.

Forster added the conversion.

Mayfield hit back when they ran the ball on the last tackle and Browne found full back Cristian

McVeigh who stepped round the cover to score wide out on the right. Stand off Jack Green converted

but then just before the half hour Rovers were back on the offensive and a long ball from

Forster found Brophy who chipped over his opposite number and collected before passing back to

Forster who scored wide out on the left. Forster added the conversion to his own try.

An error by Rovers gave Mayfield possession and quick handling the width of the field created

space for winger Kyle Marvin to score in the left corner but then two minutes before the break

Rovers ran the ball on the last tackle and Forster combined once again with Brophy to put Davies

over wide out on the left. Forster added the conversion to make the half time score 28-14 in Rovers

favour.

Eight minutes into the second half Rovers moved further ahead when an inside ball from Forster

found Palin at speed and he bounced off a defender to score a try and complete his hat trick.

Forster converted and then Forster and Brophy combined to put centre Dec Houghton through a

gap to score wide out on the right.

(NWML 14/05/2022)

Woolston Rovers ‘A’ continued their excellent form when they claimed a very good away win at

Halton Simms Cross to move upto third position in the NWML Division Three.

Simmies opened the scoring after eleven minutes when quick hands saw the ball reach full back

Nathan Outten who scored wide out on the right and then five minutes later stand off Jack white

chipped over the Rovers defence and collected the ball before rounding two defenders and putting

scrum half Ryan McCann over wide out on the left. White added the conversion.

Rovers got back into the game just after the midway point of the half when a strong drive from

prop forward Lewis Dawson put Rovers withing five metres of the Simms Cross line and hooker

Dec Houghton found full back James Tarpey linking into the line and he shot through a gap to

score on the right and then four minutes later a superb long ball from scrum half Dec Leonard sent

centre Kieran Jones away and he raced forty metres outpacing the chasing cover to score under

the posts. Stand off Craig Lawton added the conversion to level matters and then added a penalty

right on the stroke of half time to give Rovers a 12-10 interval advantage.

The kick off at the start of the second half by Rovers was dropped into tough by Simmies and from

the resulting play the ball Lawton found second row Ryan Palin at speed and he ran over three

defenders to score under the posts. Lawton converted and six minutes later a great break from his

own twenty metre line by Lawton saw him send substitute Niall Toher away and a quick play the

ball and great weaving run by Palin split the Simmies defence and he slipped a lovely inside ball

to prop forward Sean Withington who scored under the posts. Lawton added the conversion.

Rovers were now in a rampant mood and a fine ball out wide from Tarpey found Jones who raced

clear and weaved through the defence to score under the posts. Lawton converted and five

minutes later a knock on by Simmies was pounced on by Palin and he put Tarpey away to score

under the posts. Lawton added the conversion and then the referee called time early at Simms

Woolston Rovers put an end to a four-game losing run when they claimed their first away victory

of the season with an impressive win at Bradford Dudley Hill in the National Conference League

Division Two at the Neil Hunt Memorial Ground, Bradford.

Rovers opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute when hooker Adam Files went from dummy half

close to the line and found prop forward Harry Files who used his strength to carry three defenders

over the line with him to score at the side of the posts. Stand off Theo Holt converted and

then six minutes later Rovers moved the ball from their own ten metre line and on the last tackle

a superb kick to the corner by Holt was collected by winger Karlton Bates who scored in the right

corner. Holt landed a fine touchline conversion.

Two minutes from half time Dudley Hill had prop forward Kyle Bateman sin binned for contact

with the head and Rovers made the extra man count when a lovely short ball from Holt put A Files

through a gap and he selflessly passed to substitute Scott Whiteley for him to score under the

posts. Holt converted to give his side a commanding 18-0 interval advantage.

Rovers moved further ahead eight minutes into the second half when A Files kept the ball alive

in the tackle and offloaded to H Files who brushed off four defenders to score on the right. Holt

converted and it looked as though Rovers had gone over again shortly afterwards when second

row Dan Fearnley powered over but the referee surprisingly adjudged that he had knocked on.

Dudley Hill had substitute Elliott Cousins sin binned for dissent and then on the hour Rovers loose

forward Ryan Brown was yellow carded for an incident off the ball and while he was off the field

Woolston Rovers ‘A’ recent good run of results came to an end when they went down to a ‘derby’

defeat at Crosfields ‘A’ in the NWML Division Three at Hood Lane Recreation Ground.

Soap opened the scoring after five minutes when slick handling created space out wide for centre

Joe Kohe-Love who scored on the right and then seven minutes later they ran the ball on the last

tackle and full back Taylor Boyne linked into the line to race over on the right.

Rovers responded shortly afterwards when the kick off was dropped by Soap and after some

good set up play scrum half Chris Forster gave a lovely short ball to second row Cameron Davies

who shot through a gap to score on the right but then just after the midway point of the half quick

hands on the last tackle from Crosfields saw second row Alex Clutterbuck find centre Tom Smith

who scored wide out on the left.

Crosfields moved further ahead when a high kick on the last tackle from Stanway was fumbled

by Rovers and Clutterbuck was on hand to pick up the loose ball and score on the right. Stanway

converted and then four minutes before the break Soap went down the short side on the last

tackle and Kohe-Love went over wide out on the left to give his side a commanding 22-4 half time

advantage.

Rovers came out a different team in the second half and they were rewarded ten minutes into it

when a short ball from Forster found Davies at speed and he used his strength to stretch out and

score at the right of the posts with three men on him. Loose forward Craig Lawton converted but

then four minutes later Soap replied when Boyne linked into the line to create space for him to

break through the defence to score on the left.

With eight minutes remaining Rovers gave themselves a glimmer of hope when a repeat set on

the Crosfields line paid off as stand off Dec Leonard found Davies sweeping round the back to

score his hat trick try on the left but then with the final play of the game a kick to the corner on

Stand off Theo Holt converted and then eight minutes later hooker Adam Files made a forty metre

converted from the touchline and then four minutes before the break a kick on the last tackle from

stand off Josh Yates was collected superbly by Cassidy to score on the left and make the half time

Twelve minutes into the second half St Judes had full back Dec Parkinson sin binned for a trip

Crosfields opened the scoring in the second minute when an error by Rovers gave them a scrum

twenty metres out and scrum half Joe Barnes found centre Jack Fox out wide and his quick ‘tip’

then just before the interval Rovers once again kept the ball alive close to the line and A Files

managed to stretch out and score at the side of the posts despite the attention of three defenders.

Barber added the conversion to give his side a deserved 12-10 half time advantage.

Rovers stretched their lead thirteen minutes into the second half when pressure on the Crosfields

line paid off as A Files found second row Alex Smith who used his strength to score on the right
