JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Dale Vince, Forest
Green’s chairman, to One Call
Stadium for this afternoon’s match.
A special welcome to all of our
supporters for today’s final match of
the regular 46-league game season.
Carolyn and I were greatly heartened
to see this match sell out in the home
ends earlier this week. We know
how much this club and its progress
means to so many of you and our
players will be giving everything they
have to finish as high as possible in
the league table.
In many ways, this has been a season
like no other; from the long-awaited
return of supporters to football stadia
in August following the COVID-19
pandemic, to our difficult run of
results earlier in the campaign,
followed by a remarkable turnaround
which saw a brilliant FA Cup run - and
more importantly - our rise in the Sky
Bet League Two table.
There have been many memorable
moments to enjoy this season and I
know that we have the desire, hunger
and quality within our club to write
one final, special chapter in this
extraordinary season.
Whatever transpires, I have been
gladdened to see our club remain
united throughout this season,
through the tough periods and the
more enjoyable moments – that is
the true measure of a good football
club. I know that this unity of spirit
and purpose - which has been at the
heart of our club since the curtain
raised on this season in August - will
remain until the very end, whenever
that may be.
Thank you to you all, most sincerely,
for your dedicated and unwavering
support.
It’s time for us to make one final
push, together.
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Forest Green
very good, especially the first four
Rovers’ head coach Rob
performances. Our match away at
Edwards, along with the staff,
Northampton was the only game in
players and supporters from
which we haven’t performed out of
Gloucestershire to One Call
45 matches.
Stadium for this afternoon’s match.
To go on the run we did without
Our congratulations are extended
winning and then embark on a
to Rob and everyone at The Fully
winning streak of fixtures - as well as
Charged New Lawn on their
recording 13 home league wins from
promotion to League One amidst an
14 - is quite remarkable.
excellent campaign.
First and foremost, I’d like to place on
record our gratitude and best wishes
to Mike Whitlow who is set to retire
from his role as player development
phase coach in the Academy. We
all regard Mike as a proper football
man who has been instrumental in
the progress which the Academy
has made, especially since its base
moved to the RH Academy. We wish
him all the best for the future.
Monday’s 2-2 draw at Salford saw us
reach 76 points in the League Two
table – equalling the club’s highest
points’ tally in the EFL in 20 years.
The match itself saw us respond
magnificently to conceding a poor
early goal and we were very good for
30 minutes thereafter. We deserved
our equaliser and should have scored
before with Matty Longstaff‘s chance
at the far post.
We all know that there are many
permutations and possibilities at
stake today, but all we will do is
concentrate on the match ahead of
us.
To be in the position we are now,
given our run earlier on in the season,
is quite remarkable.
The way we started the season was
It’s been an extremely exciting season
and we’re still in there and fighting.
We’ll be endeavouring to keep our
performance levels as high possible
again this afternoon.
Let’s finish the regular 46-league
game season on a high.
Enjoy the game.
EXECUTIVE
Mansfield Town is pleased to
announce former Alfreton Town
chief executive Michael Bradley
as the club’s new commercial
executive.
Michael succeeds Ian Deakin in the
position, who had joined the club on
an interim basis until the end of April.
Michael, who has a wealth of
experience in sales and marketing,
said: “I’m really excited to be given
the opportunity to join a club that
is clearly going places and with big
ambitions.
“I have a really good feeling that I’m
joining the club at the right time and
there’s such a buzz about the place at
the moment.
“I already have a handful of new
businesses that are set to partner
with the club, who I’ve met and
The club sends its regards and best
wishes to the family of Elizabeth
‘Liz’ Williams as we remember
one of Mansfield’s most avid
supporters who sadly passed away
earlier this year.
Elizabeth was born in Mansfield
in 1983. From an early age she
accompanied her dad, Paul, to see
the Stags and throughout her life she
was a keen supporter of the club.
Elizabeth loved to travel and
shown around the stadium. Like so
many in the town of Mansfield, they
are excited about the prospect of
being a part of what we are trying to
achieve here.
“I’m very much looking forward
to working with the club’s existing
partners, which have been forged
so strongly in recent years, and
visited many countries around
the world. She once travelled by
bus from London to Australia. At
various places of interest she had
her photograph taken – such as
the Taj Mahal in India - wearing her
Mansfield Town shirt. Wherever she
was in the world she would make
contact with her family to ask about
the details of that day’s match.
I’m aiming to compliment that by
attracting new, local and national
businesses to Mansfield Town
Michael can be contacted via e-mail
(option 3).
Liz and her husband, Martin, finally
settled in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,
where she taught English.
Liz’s sister Steph told The Stag:
“Liz’s students were mainly
interested in the big-name
teams, but Liz would always
make mention of how Mansfield
had performed whenever the
opportunity arose.
“Sadly, Liz passed away earlier
this year from COVID, aged 38.
From the hundreds of tributes
received from the countless people
of many nationalities whose lives
she touched, you can be sure that
a little bit of MTFC will forever be
dotted all around the world.”
Full-back named as Player of the Month
Full-back Stephen McLaughlin has
been crowned the Stags’ Player of
the Month for April.
Mansfield’s number three was
instrumental at both ends of the
pitch in a crucial month for the club.
The Irishman started six of the Stags’
decisive Sky Bet League Two fixtures,
helping the club to four important
victories in that time.
McLaughlin influenced Stags’
strong defensive record in April.
The left-back played a key role in
the team’s victory-clinching clean
sheets against Northampton Town,
Scunthorpe United, Crawley Town
and Stevenage.
The former Nottingham Forest
man sparkled for Mansfield in
the impressive 4-0 victory over
Scunthorpe on 09 April. The
defender doubled Mansfield’s
lead in the 32nd minute with a
smart reaction finish from inside
the six-yard box. McLaughlin then
Stags’ Goal
of the Month
Mansfield Town midfielder Ryan
Stirk has won the Stags’ Goal of the
Month for April.
The 21-year-old’s fine finish in the
Stags’ ruthless 4-0 triumph over
Scunthorpe United was voted as
Mansfield’s best of the month.
With the amber and blue 2-0 up at
Sands Venue Stadium, Stirk picked
the ball up from outside the box
and drove past two Scunthorpe
defenders before burying a driven
finish into the bottom right corner on
38 minutes.
The youngster’s strike put the Stags
into a three goal lead at half-time
teed up Ryan Stirk six minutes later
for Mansfield’s third before being
withdrawn due to injury shortly
before half-time.
The 31-year-old soon recovered from
his hamstring injury and he helped
Stags to achieve back-to-back 2-0
home victories at the end of the
month. In Mansfield’s 2-0 win over
Crawley at One Call Stadium, the
which helped the team to an
important victory, sending Mansfield
up to fourth place in the Sky Bet
League Two table.
The Birmingham City loanee
received 67% of the fan-lead vote,
Jamie Murphy’s 26th minute
strike at home to Crawley Town
achieved second place (16%) and
Stephen Quinn’s goal from range
for Mansfield’s fourth against
Scunthorpe finished third (5.8%).
full-back cleverly assisted Lucas
Akins for Mansfield’s second goal.
The defender recorded 30.4% of the
supporters’ vote, finishing ahead of
second place George Maris (24.2%)
and third place James Perch (9.3%).
Thank you to everyone who
participated in the vote.
Happy birthday,
Brian.
The club sends its birthday wishes
to lifelong supporter Brian Payne,
who turns 70-years-old on Friday
13 May. A supporter for 65 years,
the club wishes Brian a very happy
THE
ACADEMY
Mansfield Town under-18s’ defender
Taylor Anderson had his season
cut short due to a knee injury, but
reflects positively on the youth
team’s performances this season…
My season was cut short by
about three months when I
sustained my injury, but the team
has done really well as a whole.
They have had a couple of losses,
but I think since that big loss against
Bradford, they have done really well.
They participated in the tournament
at Brooke House College and lost
out in the final but still did Mansfield
proud.
Personally, I thought I started the
season very well. I scored a goal
against Burton Albion, and we won
the fixture. We then went through
a rough patch midway through the
season. I thought that I dropped my
standards a little bit, but I raised
them once again and started playing
well until I sustained my injury.
Physically, I feel a lot stronger now
as I have been working in the gym
quite a lot and had a lot of time to
work on my fitness and my physique.
Mentally, I have dealt with the injury
very well as the club has been there
to support me. Neil Bainbridge [head
of academy operations] has helped
me alongside all the physios who
have been there to check whether
I am all right and offering all the
support they could.
Hopefully, I should be back for the
start of next season so I will be ready
to go 100% straight into tackling the
season, enjoying it and hopefully
doing well.
Signing a professional deal in
November meant a lot. It is a dream
come true for a young kid coming
through the academy and signing
as a pro. Usually, you hear about
it, but to actually do it is an unreal
experience, a real dream come true.
On the back of my previous injury
last season, I approached this one
with a lot of positivity. There is no
point getting down about it because
there is nothing you can do about
it. I have just been positive the
whole time and hoping that
I come back stronger after
this injury.
Looking ahead, I’ve been
advised to keep doing
the exercises that they
tell me to do on my
knee, even if it is not
hurting. Just keep doing
those exercises to keep
the knee strong and
make sure that this sort
of injury does not happen
again in the future.
Mansfield Town ladies’ manager
Andi Bell looks ahead to an exciting
couple of games for her side,
beginning with the final game
of the league season against
Loughborough on Sunday 08 May
(2pm kick-off)…
In both Northampton games, we
went toe-to-toe with the team
who will become champions of
this league.
In last Sunday’s game, we lost 2-0,
which was similar to the home game
a few days earlier. It was 0-0 for a
good 65 minutes, but unfortunately,
we lost our main goalkeeper and one
of our centre-halves sustained an
injury.
Then, our stand-in ‘keeper could not
carry on, and if we did not have to
make that substitution we certainly
would have got something out of that
game.
I said to the girls after the game that
you cannot legislate for things like
that, and things were just not meant
to be.
A lot of things have happened to
us with injuries, particularly to our
goalkeeper that are just unlucky.
That is just sometimes how it goes
and that is the little bit of luck that
you get when you are up there like
Northampton are.
There are still things we need to
improve as a team, and people will
be wanting to play for their place
in the starting line-up as I am sure
everyone will be, but there are plenty
of things to work on.
Going forward, we have a couple of
exciting games to look forward to,
and Sunday’s game will be another
chance for players to stake their
claim for a starting place in the cup
final of the County Cup and the
League Plate.
Overall, I think we have done very
well this season, with the last two
campaigns being curtailed. With a
couple of the poorer sides dropping
out, every game has had something
to it. Psychologically, the pressure
has been really high, but we have
done well.
Consistency and taking our
chances are the two main
lessons from the season, but
we have done well overall.
We will give it our all
against Loughborough
in the final league game
of the season as we have
with every other game
this season. If we can get
any momentum heading
into those cup finals, it will be
positive for us.
FITC REFLECT ON SUCCESSFUL SATURDAY
STAY ALL DAY CLUB
Mansfield Town has enjoyed a magnificent campaign this season,
and the support has been excellent. Every home game, Mansfield
Town Football in the Community run a Saturday Stay All Day club
– the season for which has now come to an end.
Participants of the club have enjoyed football activities for two hours
on the 3G pitch outside the ground, supervised by our expert coaches.
From there, there is time for a quick bite to eat whilst they wait in the
stands for the big kick-off with the staff. After the game is finished,
parents then collect their children at the Community office at 5pm.
The number of participants has been at an all-time high for the
Saturday Clubs this season which is great to see as Football in the
Community continue to push support for the Stags at an early age.
The price for attending the Saturday Stay All Day clubs when they’re
up and running again is £17 for non-junior SSA members and £12 for
members.
With the season coming to a close, today marks the last day of
the Saturday Stay All Day club, but we will continue to deliver the
Saturday Morning club until the new season begins. When the Stags
are not playing at home, the Saturday Morning club runs from 10am-
12pm, costing just £4. Participants have the chance to play football
and enjoy fun-filled activities on the 3G pitch under the guidance of
coaches.
Mansfield Town Football in the Community would like to thank
everyone who has attended the Saturday clubs throughout the year.
Community manager Gary Shaw has been impressed with the level of
enthusiasm and support the participants have shown at the games.
“We’ve had so much fun throughout the season this year running
these Stay All Day clubs,” he said.
“We’ve had high numbers for every home game this year, and we look
forward to welcoming everyone back in the new season, hopefully in
a new division!”
Keep an eye out for Mansfield Town Football in the Community’s
holiday clubs with one coming up at the end of May.
THE GOLDEN ARCHIVE
‘HIS STORY’
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND.
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, we look
back with a Stags’ hero of the past,
focusing on memorable behindthe-scenes
moments they will never
forget.
Continuing the season with
‘His-Story’ is former goalkeeper
Ian Bowling, who made 172
appearances for the club from 1995
to 2000.
here are a couple of stories
“Tthat spring to mind from
my time at the club. We had a good
team spirit at Mansfield – a good
bunch of lads with no egos, who
always stuck together.
One pre-season, under Steve Parkin,
we went to Ireland. We were based
in the middle of nowhere. There was
just one long street, a market square,
with a number of pubs. Steve told us
to go out for a pint on the night we
got there so, of course, we did.
We ventured into this first pub (a
squad of 17 of us), and it was like one
of those typical village scenarios –
with everyone stopping what they
were doing and looking at us as we
ventured through the front door.
Anyway, we went to the bar and
as we were in Ireland, we ordered
a round of Guinness. The landlord
served us – one of the lads went to
pick his up and the landlord stopped
him, saying it wasn’t ready yet – that
you have to tap the glass
with an Irish pound, and
it’s ready only when it
makes a certain noise.
We all stood there
tapping our pints and
Steve Harper said his
wasn’t ready, telling the
landlord he thought there
was something wrong
with his drink as it was
making a different sound
to everybody else’s. The
landlord swiftly picked
Steve’s pint up, looked
at it, took a sip … and
proceeded to neck
it all! He then put it
down before walking away saying
“Mmm, nothing wrong with that pal!”.
We were all laughing as Harper was
stood raging, left without a pint!
There was another time we went out,
around Christmas one year. This was
when Brian ‘Killer’ Kilcline was at the
club. Every day Brian would turn up
to training dressed in sports jacket,
collar and tie, whilst everyone else
would be in jeans or tracksuit.
Anyway, someone said that at
Christmas we should all go out
dressed as ‘Killer’ - which we did! So,
this one year, we’d all gone to the
local charity shops and bought some
garish jackets, ties and shirts – all
typical of the type Brian would wear.
After training, Killer was in the
dressing room on his own and then
we all walked in. As you can imagine,
Brian wasn’t expecting the sight of us
all dressed like him – but he took it in
his stride and he blended in perfectly!
It was all good fun.”
