INSTANT RELIEF
TWO MONTHS IS A LONG TIME TO BE
HOSPITALIZED AND AWAY FROM HOME…
JUST ASK THE FORD FAMILY. Their son
Beau was diagnosed with Stickler
syndrome and Pierre Robin
sequence at birth. He was
immediately transferred from his
hometown hospital in Catawba
County, NC to the NICU at Atrium
Health Wake Forest Baptist Brenner
Children’s Hospital. Although
Stickler syndrome is incurable, symptoms can be controlled, and Beau’s
medical team began procedures right away. The double whammy of the Pierre
Robin syndrome diagnosis meant that Beau had a cleft palate and struggled
with eating and breathing. Beau was going to have a long road until discharge
and his parents, Anna and Ben, were referred to our Ronald McDonald House.
Anna recalled feeling “instant relief” as they
realized they wouldn’t have to worry about
where to stay. Ben felt that the House would be
a safe, comfortable, and supportive “home base”
for Anna as he returned home to work. He spent
weekends with Anna and Beau to save up time
off from work for future therapies and
procedures.
At first, Anna pretty much kept to herself, but by
week three she connected with other NICU families and enjoyed snacks or
meals with them at the House. Catching up after long days at the hospital was
refreshing. “You are never alone here. Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Anna
reflected. Even the shuttle drivers befriended her, and she did not have to walk
to and from the hospital alone. Anna felt that everyone was looking out for her
and that she “was surrounded and supported by many people.”
Although two months is a long time, the Ford
family’s time at RMHCPT flew by as Beau
responded to the procedures and grew
stronger. Eventually, when Beau returned to
Brenner Children’s for surgery, his family knew
where they were going to stay. Now
three-years-old, Beau is doing well. He’s eating
and drinking on his own. Anna said, “I will
forever be grateful for RMH and the staff at the
Family Room. Thanks to them, I focused on my
son and did not worry about food or hotel bills.”

CHUCK’S CORNER
The “eyes” have it – no not the “ayes” as in a vote at a meeting. The “eyes”, as in brown, green, blue, big, little,
round, or almond-shaped. Now, well into dealing with COVID for two years and still following CDC and
RMHC Global guidelines, we continue to require masks in all common areas for staff and guest families. The
eyes, as a form of communication, have become even more important – or maybe we have simply become
more in tune with them.
RMHCPT Guest Services staff can immediately see that tired-to-the-bone look in the eyes of the mom and
dad who’ve finally left their child’s bedside to come check-in. We are sure to let mom and dad know all about
our Tempur-Pedic mattress and the private bath with a hot shower that await them in their room. The anxious
eyes staring at us through the steam of a hot cup of fresh McDonald’s coffee in the morning immediately lets
us know which moms and dads are headed across the street to Brenner Children’s to stand vigil while their
child is in surgery. Mom’s smiling eyes that are still moist from happy tears as she comes in our front door at
the end of the day means surgery went well. Dad’s smiling eyes as he comes in means surgery went well AND
he can smell the aroma of one of his favorite meals, courtesy of a meal donor or partner restaurant. Sometimes
we are confronted with the unmistakable red, wet-with-tears, swollen eyes of grief as parents mourn their time
with their child here on earth was much too brief. Our staff members offer listening ears and eyes full of
kindness and sympathy. Regardless of brown, green, blue, big, little, round, or almond-shaped, the eyes at
checkout time are always the same – filled with gratitude and accompanied by the simple words of
appreciation, “we can’t thank you enough.”
What our guest families don’t realize is that the “eyes” truly have it! Their eyes already communicate their
gratitude that our Ronald McDonald House was here when they needed it! Thank you – donors and
volunteers – for your caring and compassionate eyes and hearts. You make it possible to always be here for
the next family that needs our services.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
After ten years, over 3,000 meals, and serving almost 10,000
families Lara Wilson is hanging up her apron! She’s been our
longest serving volunteer Meals Coordinator and she’s worked
with meals groups, planned menus, and made sure our families
could count on delicious, hot meals at the end of a long day.

pop into the kitchen and it was always our pleasure to hear their stories of
determination and hope.”

community awareness, and providing volunteer support to further our mission.

THEA’S STORY
Born on April Fool’s
Day, Thea arrived early
– three months ahead of
her due date – and
weighing only 1 lb., 2.7
oz.! Mom Kiara was
overjoyed to hear her
cry because the medical
team cautioned that
Thea’s lungs would not
be fully developed.
Thea was placed in the Forsyth Medical Center NICU and
Mom Kiara stayed at RMHCPT. She reflected, “Honestly,
everyone was so nice
and respectful, and they
always checked on me.
If I needed to talk,
someone was always
there to listen. Being
only six minutes down
the road from her put
me at ease. Thank you,
RMH staff! The
hospitality and
kindness were just what
I needed!”

CARTS, CARTS – THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!
When the RMHCPT Hospitality Cart program got
rolling again last July, it literally took off and
hasn’t stopped! Three carts are navigating several
floors at Brenner Children’s providing
complimentary snacks and drinks for families
along with special toys for children. Another cart
is patrolling the antepartum hallways at Forsyth
Medical Center, and our newest cart will be steered
at Cone Health by the time you are reading this
newsletter! Exciting things are happening
everywhere, and we are thrilled to expand our
services and reach more families.

Room’s 14th anniversary celebration was no
exception! Thanks to longtime volunteers
Lois Miller and Dinah Reece, our signature
ice cream sundae and cupcake party fares
were enjoyed by parents and staff of the
NICU, Antepartum, Pediatrics and
Mother/Baby unit.

welcoming place for families to escape for a moment of
quiet and relaxation. Fabulous volunteers treat everyone
like family and take care of these guests during a very
stressful time of their lives. We are honored to have the

SNACK BAGS
While COVID-19 restricted some RMHCPT programs, it was also the
impetus for new ones. The Snack Bag initiative was launched in 2020 to
reach families in the hospital and provide items typically offered in our
Family Rooms. 3,201 bags were distributed throughout 2021 across our
partner hospitals including Brenner Children’s, Cone Health, and Forsyth
Medical Center.
