The telecommunications
sector is considered one
of the major sectors that
have a major contribution
to the nation’s economy in
addition to its direct and positive
effect on a nation’s GDP growth.
In Egypt, this sector has been experiencing
some slowdown since
the revolution in January 2011.
This slowdown is demonstrated
by a drop in revenues, profits and
margins.
This situation of the telecom
industry is expected to be a
temporary situation which we all
have to do our utmost effort to
cross it quickly and safely. This
is not the end of the way, there
is always light at the end of the
tunnel. For that, some active and
positive steps need to be done to
make it happen and start rolling
the money cycle and in turn the
economy cycle.
I see that the government represented
by MCIT should take a
proactive role by subsidizing the
Egyptian companies which are
mainly medium and small sized
companies to help them cross
this bottleneck. Also, new projects
should be initiated to start injecting
some cash in the market.
The telecommunications should
be put on the government priority
list side by side with the other
problems Egypt is facing due to
its direct positive impact on the

GDP growth.
The positive role telecommunications
play in the economy growth
will help achieve some of the
targets on the government’s priority
list.
These targets can be summarized
as follows:
• Creating job opportunities
and thus reducing unemployment.
• Stimulate the economic
growth nationwide and thus
fostering social cohesion.
• Help revive business with
small and medium sized companies
affected by the current
slowdown which represent the
majority of companies in the
telecom sector.
Over and above what’s mentioned
above, the restoration of
security is a key factor in providing
a giant push to the telecom
industry by providing the suitable
environment for attracting new
foreign direct investments which
will have an immediate and direct
positive effect on stimulating the
country’s economy.
Egypt is also experiencing new
technologies nowadays. I can see
the start of wide deployment of
the new FTTH technology in the
gated compounds in Egypt which
is expected to catch-up quickly.
