Auctioneer Vernon Bailey’s
Life on the Farm
All Quiet
on the Homefront. . .
I saw the following quotation on a social networking
site the other day, "Shhh! don't talk unless
you can improve the silence." Ah Silence! Farm
life can be hectic and very noisy by times. Cows
bawling to be milked, pigs squealing to be fed,
the drone of the tractor's diesel engine,
the pounding thump of the square baler plunger.
Not to mention the clang of the discs in a rocky
field, the screech of a hay elevator, chickens
clucking, roosters crowing or the whirling click of
a hay rake. Seagulls squawking following the tractor
and plows, fighting each other for grubs,
worms or mice. Newly weaned calves protesting
their mother's absence. I will admit that those
noises are quite a bit
lower on the annoyance
meter compared with
the racket of a city
street. However, when
ones body aches with
fatigue all things quiet
is quite a welcome
treat.
One of the memories I
love about Life on the
Farm is, silence. Yes
the cows have been
milked, the pigs are
fed, the equipment is
quiet, the sun is setting.
The big rock
north of the barn
beckons to you. The
day has been long
and hard so you
accept it's invitation. You seat yourself amongst
contented cows reposing in the cool evening air.
You hear nothing. The neighbors have ended
there labors too ,so there is no commotion in the
distance, all is resting.
One of my favorite authors, Robert Service,
penned these words,
"Were you ever out in the Great Alone when the
moon was awful clear? When the icy mountains
hemmed you in with a silence you could almost
hear?" "A silence you can almost hear!" I suppose
that is what could be called an oxymoron. None
the less, silence; what a beautiful sound. Just
think about that for a moment.
There are many beautiful, soothing sounds in
our everyday lives. The melody of a song bird, the
purr of a kitten, the coo of a dove, the harmony
of an accapella quartet, a Beethoven symphony,
rain on a roof or my Grand-daughter saying my
name. I am certain you all can add to the list of
sounds that are exceptional to your ears. But the
sound of silence can't be duplicated. It is a sound
the soothes a tired body like none other. The
absence of noise and sounds can be the best
sound you've never heard. Oh! How I loved the
quiet times of Life on The Farm.
Vernon
Memories From You. . .
My Earliest Memory. . .
Our farm was at the end of a lane, with no public road adjoining it anywhere,
a mile from the nearest highway, with no electric poles or running
water. In spring and summer, a visitor approaching the farm
down that lane from the north through scrub timber and coming suddenly
on the valley would be greeted with a lovely vista. In late fall and
winter, on a cloudy day, the valley could be a dreary place, and at night
with no “light pollution” from electricity, it could be almost pitch black.
It was easy to believe the stories of the ghost of the old lady buried on
the hill across from the house wandering about carrying a lantern.
Look! Wasn’t that a light? No, it’s gone. Did I really see it?
But on moonlit nights, even in winter, it had a stark beauty, with tree
branches like etchings back-lighted by the stars peeking through. On
such a night in 1936, a small boy “going on three” lay in the bed of his
grandmother in the hall of a two room house overlooking the valley.
The boy’s mother and father and baby brother were sleeping in the
adjoining bedroom-living room. The kitchen and a side room used to
smoke-cure meat, and a back porch, made up the rest of the small
dwelling. The hall was the only place for the grandmother to sleep.
Suddenly the lonely hoo-hoo-hoo of an owl in one of the trees lining
Dry Branch pierces the night.
“Grandma’, the little boy says, “I hear that ol’ hoot owl again.”
“Yes, honey, I hear him too.”
“Why does the owl hoot, grandma?”
“I don’t know, honey. Maybe because he is lonely and doesn’t have a little
boy owl to keep him company like you do me.”
And on and on the questions. Finally, the mother calls from the next
room: “Roy, hush. Grandma needs to sleep.”
“You hush,” Grandma admonishes her daughter. “Grandma won’t be
around always. Let him talk about the hoot owl if he wants to. It’s good
for his imagination.”
This is my earliest memory of my life. I cannot guarantee that the above
conversation is accurate word-for-word, but I remember the hoot owl
and my mother admonishing me to hush and my grandmother sticking
up for me. My mother was in ill health and had my brother Billy, two
years my junior and a few months old at that time, to care for. Probably
she needed her sleep too.
INSTALL NEW TELEPHONE Tottenham - For the convenience of patrons,
a hand set of the most modern type has been installed in the public booth
at the office of the Bell Telephone Co. on Mill St. here.
HAS UNPLEASANT HOLIDAY Tottenham - Walter Walkem, 12, youngest
son of Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Walkem, has had an unpleasant time lately
by reason of an inflamed jaw caused by an ulcerated tooth. It caused him
to miss an extended period from school during the pre-examination season.
Following an X-Ray examination of the jaw at Alliston hospital and
extraction of the infected tooth, the painful swelling responded readily to
sulfa treatment.
FRED DIKKEN IS HOME Palgrave - Fred Dikken, 28, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Dikken of Palgrave, now is enjoying his second visit at home since getting back
to Canada last October after four years' overseas service. Fred had enlisted
with the R.C.A.F. in 1940, but transferred to the British 6th Dutch Army in
1942. He has served extensively as an interpreter. In action near the Arnheim
bridge in September, 1944, the left side of his head was shattered by the explosion
of a shell nearby. Through plastic surgery treatment in numerous hospitals
his facial features have been restored to the point that no difference can
be recognized by members of his own family. Before enlisting, Mr. Dikken has
been an automobile mechanic in London, Ont. He arrived back in Palgrave June
1 for a brief holiday.
MERVIN WALKEM HOME Tottenham - Mervin Walkem, recently discharged
form the R.C.A.F. after extended service, has joined the staff of
the hardware store operated here for many years by his father, R. J.
Walkem. His elder son, Charles, active for some time around the store during
off-school periods, has been gaining reputation as one of the most
ingenious window-dressers in this part of the country.
FENCING "LITTLE QUIETER" Tottenham - Gerald Doyle, 23, back from
overseas army service recently, now is back at farming with his brothers,
Basil and George Doyle, near here. At this time two years ago he had just
been hospitalized in Italy with arm and leg gunshot wounds. A year ago he
was starting back to England after the long ordeal in Italy. During the last
week he has been catching up on fence repairs on the "north hundred"
before getting ready for haying. "This is quite a change to what I had been
doing in June last year and of the year before," he grinned. "It;s a little
quieter, to say the least." Gerald is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Doyle.
RESERVE TANK MOUNTED Caledon East - A reserve water tank has been
mounted on the trailer to be attached to the pumper truck of Caledon East
fire brigade. This will assure an immediate supply of water under any
adverse circumstances such as encountering dry or frozen cisterns. The
tank was mounted on the trailer chassis by Bert Appleby, Ollie McDermott
and Reg. Richardson.
NOW BUSY MAIL CENTRE Nashville - Harry Woods, who carries mail
between the C.P.R. station here and points as far north as Nobleton,
Lloydtown and Schomberg, has missed only two trips in 16 years. Blockage
of roads was responsible both times. In order to meet the 5:45 a.m. train
here, Mr. Woods has to get up at 3;30 a.m. each morning at his home in
Schomberg. Northbound morning trains carry mail as far as here for the
three northern communities as well as for post offices in both Nashville
and Kleinburg. The mail traffic is so heavy at their point that long pauses
are made by two of the main line trains each day.
300 DINNERS BY EXPRESS Nashville - Christmas dinners for 300 homes
were casually but carefully handed from the express coach of the C.P.R.
Soo train when it eased to a stop in its northward course here on Friday
morning. Steve Seed, well known among younger Nashville district farmers
was there with his car to pick up three large, flat cardboard packets,
each holding 100 Sussex chicks brought into being at a hatchery in
Atwood. "For the last six of seven years we have been getting from 25 to
50 chicks at this time to raise for Christmas sale," Mr. Seed explained.
"All these new chick starters and mashes now on the market have been
working out so well for us that we decided to go into the thing in a big
way this year. Trouble in getting meat has been bringing about a bigger
sale of well-fattened birds for city tables."
STARLINGS OUT-SMARTED Nashville - By having a pair of individual
sacks for each one of the box holders on his two mail routes totaling 20
miles in length here, Omar Devins cuts the possibility of error to a minimum.
For sorting purposes, the bags hang on a long rack in the post office
and general store of Ross Farr here. When one of the full bags is placed in
a farm box each morning, an empty bag is removed and used for the trip
the next day. This individual bag idea also combats interference from starlings,
famous for their raiding of rural mail boxes. "I used to have trouble
with starlings picking up and flying away with coins left in boxes by holders
to cover cost of putting stamps on letters," recalled Mr. Devins. "Now
most of the people I serve have got into the habit of having a supply of
stamps for mailing letters so that they don't have to leave loose coins in
the box. The shine of the coins will attract the birds every time."
