These Iconic Y2K Fashion
Trends Are Back In A
Big Way, And We're Not Mad
Written by Lucy Cocoran in 2021
Early 2000s fashion was
equal parts iconic and tragic.
And, while there are a fair
few red carpet fashion moments
we wish we could unsee,
there's a lot to love as well.
Women undoubtedly ruled
the world at this time.
Destiny’s Child, Britney
Spears, Christina Aguilera,
Missy Elliot, and Paris
Hilton were in their prime,
with on-screen icons like Elle
Woods in Legally Blonde and
Regina George of Mean Girls
stealing the show as well. Unsurprisingly
then, it's their
closets that act as the gateway
to the best Y2K look
(think hot pink everything,
bedazzled logos, teeny-tiny
bags, denim on denim, and
of course, Juicy Couture).
In a decade defined by velour
tracksuits and trucker
hats, there's a lot to love
(and also hate). But, thanks
to come of our favourite celebrities
like Dua Lipa and
Bella Hadid, they're making
a strong case for the return
of some key fashion trends.
As they say, everything old is
new again, and some iconic
looks were never meant to die.

Everything to Know
About the 2022 Met Gala
Met Monday has arrived! Here's what to know about the fashion event's theme, co-chairs, and
more!
The 2022 Met Gala takes place on May 2, 2022, at
the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York City.
The theme is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,”
with the dress code being gilded glamour
and white tie. Channeling the time period
between 1870 to 1890, the event “will ask its
attendees to embody the grandeur—and perhaps
the dichotomy—of Gilded Age New York.
The era is known for major industrialization and
put the likes of John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, and
Cornelius Vanderbilt on the map. Unprecedented
prosperity and cultural change were significant.
The light bulb was patented, the telephone was
invented, wages skyrocketed — and seemingly
instantaneous, so did skyscrapers and fortunes.
Serving as a part 2 to last year’s “A Lexicon of
Fashion” and paying homage to American history,
the official exhibit for this year’s “In America:
An Anthology of Fashion” will be on display
in the storied museum’s period-centric rooms.
Get ready to step into “fashion’s biggest night.”
Regarded as one of the most highly anticipated sartorial
scenes of the year, the 2022 Met Gala kicks off on May 2.
Notably described as the Academy Awards’ fashion
equivalent, the style extravaganza is a fundraising
event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume
Institute, formally titled The Anna Wintour Costume
Center named after Vogue’s editor-in-chief, who
has been a chair member of the gala since 1995.
The exclusive affair draws in the eager eyes of
style seekers who can’t wait to catch a glimpse
of the star-studded red carpet looks that revolve
around a carefully crafted theme. Celebrities,
designers, and change-makers are challenged
to create costumes that serve as both a
fashion statement and a tribute to the concept.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds will serve as 2022
Met Gala co-chairs alongside Oscar-winner Regina
King and Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Designer Tom Ford, head of Instagram Adam
Mosseri and Vogue’s Editor-in-chief Wintour
will serve as the gala’s honorary hosts this year
The Met Gala is an exclusive event with an
elite guest list that’s usually kept secret until
the evening before the extravaganza. Invitees
range from A-list celebrities to the fashion
industry’s top designers. A few Met Gala
regulars include the Kardashian-Jenner family,
Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, and Katy Perry.
Some confirmed guests this year include Mindy
Kaling, Lily James, and Gabrielle Union —
all of whom have already started sharing their
“getting ready” process ahead of the big night!

FAST FASHION : the
monster in our
closets

Water Pollution
Clothes made out of synthetic fabrics
can contain microplastics. When they are
washed or if they are sitting in a landfill and
are subject to rains, these tiny shreds of plastic
are flushed into wastewater systems and
eventually make their way out into the ocean.
Fast fashion describes cheap, stylish,
mass-produced clothes that have a huge impact
on the environment. These garments appeal
to shoppers because they are affordable
and trendy. But because they aren’t built to
last and quickly go out of style, these clothes
are quickly discarded, piling up in landfills.
Although consumers might enjoy having
inexpensive and stylish clothes,
fast fashion has been criticized for
its environmental and ethical impact.
Textile Waste
We’re more likely to throw away cheap,
trendy clothes than more expensive, timeless
pieces. The average American throws
away about 70 pounds of clothing and other
textiles each year, according to the Council
for Textile Recycling.2 The equivalent of
one garbage truck of clothes is dumped in
landfills or burned every second in the U.S.
CO2 Emissions
In order to mass produce so many inexpensive
garments so quickly, items often aren’t
ethically made. Factories are often sweatshops
where laborers work in unsafe conditions
for low wages and long hours. In many
cases, children are employed and basic human
rights are violated, reports EcoWatch.
Studies have shown the plastic fibers can
end up in the stomachs of marine animals,
including some that wind up as seafood.
Unsafe Labor Conditions
Besides the sheer bulk of waste in landfills,
fast fashion has an impact on the environment
through carbon emissions. The fashion
industry is responsible for 10% of global CO2
emissions each year, according to the Ellen
MacArthur Foundation.That’s more than all
international flights and maritime shipping
combined. Researchers project that if things
don’t change, by 2050 the fashion industry will
use up a quarter of the world’s carbon budget.
Workers can be exposed to caustic chemicals
and dyes and may work in dangerous
situations where safety may not be a concern. 11

2022 Trends
The warm weather is swiftly approaching,
and prepping your summer wardrobe is arguably
half of the fun. Whether you’re beach bound
or plan to have a grand soirée (or two) on your
rooftop, there’s likely a summer 2022 trend for
all of your fun warm-weather plans. Light fabrics,
subdued skin, and fun color combinations
are just a few that we’re swooning over.
Wearing bright colors is a repeated trend from
past summer’s fashion. However, extend the
trend by picking up a pair of neon shoes and
bright-colored jewelry. If you’re gonna go big,
go home. The chunky plastic neon shoes will
be around the next few months and should always
be paired with at least one other neon
clothing item or accessory. Don’t forget to have
fun with it and step outside your comfort zone.
Pretty anything mini will be in this summer.
A mini top with some baggier pants or
a mini skirt with a longer top is a great wat yo show off what
you love the most about your body. You can even wear a min
top and mini bottoms for a night out on the town. Wearing
smaller pieces of clothing can help to highlight your accessories,
too, so make sure to stock up on jerelry and sunglasses.
Low-waisted pants and skirts are coming back to the spotlight, and
now is the time to give the trend a try. You can pair low-waisted jeans
with a fitted graphic tee to run some errands or wear a low mini skirt
Wearing a matching set is quick and easy to throw on while lo
loking put together and fashionable. You can find sets for
nearly any occasion and they come in many different styles.
The more complicated the top is to get on, the better. Strappy
tops are extremply flattering and dress up nearly any outfit.
Many differnt styles are appropriate for differnt occasions too.

Similar to last summer, dresses and other pieces of clothing
with cutouts will be seen this year. No matter how big or how
many there are, cutouts spice up any shirt, skirt, dress or pants.
