This guide covered Austria and Southern Germany
in the aftermath of the “Seven Weeks War” or the
“Austro-Prussian War”. The Prussians defeated the
Austrians and after the War Prussia became much
more dominant in Germany and this eventually
led to a united Germany under the Prussian leader
King Wilhelm.
binding sometimes used by Murray at this time.
Chevalier Alexander Howard, otherwise known
as Iskander Awad, was a local proprietor of two
hotels in Jaffa and Jerusalem. He became famous
for successfully suing the Baedeker company in
the High Court in London for making disparaging
remarks about his hotel in Jaffa. Baedekers were
ordered to remove the remarks. They not only
removed the remarks in the next edition, they
in fact deleted all references to both his hotels
in their guides. This in the end greatly affected
Howard’s business and he suffered financial
hardship.
The city has been renamed several times. During
the Jin Dynasty, the city was known as Zhongdu,
and then later under the Mongol Yuan Dynasty
as Dadu in Chinese and Daidu to Mongols. Twice
in the city’s history, the name was changed from
Beijing (Peking) to Beiping (Peiping), literally
“Northern Peace”. This occurred first under the
Hongwu Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, and again
in 1928 with the Kuomintang (KMT) government
of the Republic of China. On each occasion, the
56
name change removed the element meaning
“capital” (jing or king) to reflect the fact the
national capital had changed to Nanjing. The
city’s name was also twice changed from Beiping
(Peiping) to Beijing (Peking).
