• Amid the desolate wilderness of the Great Plains of Nebraska, a region so isolated
you could drive for hours without seeing another human being, sits Hatchery
Haunted by patients’ past and present, only the most vulnerable find a home
within its walls. Former FBI psychiatrist Dr Lorelei Lore Webber has almost grown
used to the unorthodox methods used at Hatchery House. But when one of her
patients is murdered, Lore finds herself dragged into the centre of an investigation
that unearths startling truths, shocking discoveries, and untold cruelty. Dark,
haunting, chilling, Kassandra Montag’s Those Who Return is a psychological thriller
of guilt and redemption. Quercus, available from Exclusive Books
Rare, limited Husk Spirit
What Port is to Portugal, Cava to Spain, and Champagne to France, so now too
is Grappa to Italy. This is thanks to a relatively recent change in terminology. If it’s
made elsewhere in the world, then the spirit which is distilled from grape skins
that have been removed during the wine-making process, is referred to as Husk
Spirit. The ‘husks’ or skins find new life in a clear, refined spirit that is anchored
in wine production but takes flight in delicious new directions. Like the virgin
release of De Toren Private Cellar ultra-premium De Toren Fusion V Premium
Husk Spirit. This rare and limited edition is an ideal digestif, meal accompaniment,
or enjoy it the traditional Italian way as a Caffè corretto, which is an espresso
shot ‘corrected’ with a small amount of grappa. Be sure to drink at the correct
temperature - 14 ºC to 16ºC - and in the optimal grappa stemware – a tulipshaped
or cognac glass. You should also let it breathe for 10 to 15 minutes. Only
529 bottles exist, each one individually numbered and carefully packaged by
hand in its special edition wooden case, making it a true collector’s item. R1259.
A clear vision
Growing up, Suzanne Smith was set to become either a heart surgeon or a ballerina.
Then came the choice … she happily traded her tutu and pointe shoes for sneakers
and scrubs. Not as a heart surgeon though, but as an ophthalmologist.
Although no one in her family had any interest in the
medical field, Dr Suzanne Smith on the other hand
always had a fascination with the human body. Add
a healthy dose of passion to help people, and the
decision came easy. Yes, she loved ballet and excelled
as a ballerina, but it was becoming a doctor that made
her heart beat a little faster.
“During my Zuma year, I worked in a rural hospital in
the Free State. I was busy with caesarean sections and
in the theatre next door ophthalmologists were doing
cataract surgery. In between cases, I went to watch
what they were busy with. A-ma-zing! The surgery and
the delicate work they were doing were incredible …
and that’s putting it mildly. I was hooked and started
studying for my primary exams in Ophthalmology.
Thereafter I applied for a position to specialise in
Ophthalmology, gained heaps of experience whilst
working with a professor, and went into private care.
“During my journey, I met Dr Irene Freed, also an
ophthalmologist. Once she completed her government
time we started VisuSense. Now we have three
practices – at Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital, Netcare
Pinehaven Hospital and at West Rand Eye Centre.”
Experienced in a host of skills with impressive
names – cataract removals, general ophthalmology
surgery (removal of pterygiums, growths, lid repairs,
trauma, strabismus etc), glaucoma management
and all aspects of medical ophthalmology (diabetic
retinopathy, macular degeneration, hypertensive
retinopathy, dry eye, infections and uveitis), Suzanne
treats children and adults.
Some of these conditions are also listed as the most
common vision problems South Africans struggle
with, among them cataracts, glaucoma, macular
degeneration (an eye disease that causes vision loss) as
well as allergic eye disease and dry eyes.
“Cataracts require surgery, macular degeneration
often needs regular eye injections, and glaucoma can
be treated both medically and surgically. Glaucoma,
although never cured, can be very well controlled
with treatment to prevent permanent vision loss.
Most of these conditions can be rectified with
treatment, especially with early detection. That’s
why it is so important to go for routine eye tests and
examinations! A lot of us take our sight for granted;
therefore, do the same for your eyes as you would
do in the case of other systemic illnesses. And wear
proper protective eyewear. Always.”
Suzanne added that the saying, “the eyes are the
windows to the soul”, is quite true; however more in
the sense that medical conditions can be picked up
during an eye exam.
“High blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, cholesterol,
and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis,
lupus and thyroid problems can be picked up
on a fully dilated eye exam. Life-threatening
conditions such as brain tumours and even
carotid stenosis can also be picked up during
a comprehensive eye exam.”
When Suzanne is not busy saving eyes,
she shops. A self-confessed shopaholic she
feels that retail therapy brings her loads of
happiness. From clothes, decor, art and food
to sneaker shopping. A little birdie told us she
has 30 pairs in all the colours you can think of!
But it is not only shopping that brings her joy
– quite the homebody, she and hubby Gerrit
have loads of fun with their three-year-old
toddler Freya and three-weeks-old baby boy,
Callum. And when the couple, who are huge
foodies, really want to treat
themselves, they head
to Roots Restaurant at
Forum Homini for a finedining
experience. Because
balance, right?
One thing is certain, this friendly
doc with the sassy sneakers
is passionate about many
things, but to make
you see clearly
surely tops her
list. Details:
How often should you take your child for eye screenings?
Children should be screened at birth and by their paediatrician at all
their routine follow-ups within the first year of life. Thereafter in preschool
and school, about every two years if no vision correction is required (just
a quick check with optometrists who go to the schools or at a private
optometrist). If any red flags are picked up, the child will be referred to an
ophthalmologist for a fully dilated eye exam and cycloplegic refraction.
Children who need spectacles or contact lenses should be examined
every six months instead of a year if they have a refractive error. However,
it depends on the age of the child as well as the problem.
Four common vision problems in children:
• Vernal keratoconjunctivitis – a common allergic eye disease seen in preadolescent
children, often boys. Symptoms include light sensitivity, itchy
eyes, brown discoloured sclera, ulcers and even severe astigmatism or
vision loss.
• Viral conjunctivitis – such as pink eye, is often contracted in schools and
is very contagious. The symptoms include red eyes, ocular discharge,
light sensitivity and severe discomfort.
• Blocked tear ducts – often seen in children under one year old. The
symptoms include excessive tearing of one or both eyes. This can require
surgical treatment.
• Styes and chalazions – are both lumps in or along the edge of an eyelid.
These are infections in the lid area that can cause diffuse or localised
swelling and discomfort. Both conservative and surgical management
can be used to treat these problems.
Less-obvious signs of vision problems in children:
If they turn their head to the side when looking at something in front of
them, it may be a sign of a refractive error, including astigmatism.
If your children complain of frequent headaches or have a short attention
span, it may be just because they can’t see well and it hurts to focus.
If they sit very close to the TV or avoid reading, drawing, playing games
or doing other projects that need up-close focus, or are easily frustrated
with reading, it bears mentioning to your eye doctor.
Eye movements tell a lot about vision, even if a child is pre-verbal. How
well children follow faces or moving objects is a clue to their visual
abilities. Another indication of a possible disorder is unusual jerky
movements of a child’s eye(s). These eye movements can be constant or
intermittent. They can be horizontal, vertical, oblique, torsional (circular),
or combinations of those mentioned.
Eight warning signs that your child has vision problems:
• Red eyes • Holding a book/ iPad/ phone very close to his or her face
• An abnormal position of the eye (squint or cross-eyed) • A cloudy/ white
pupil • Excessively large corneas • Protruding globe/ eye • Lazy/ droopy
eyelid • Covering one eye when watching television or reading
How to avoid digital eye strain:
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at an object at
least 20 feet away. And blink! Staring at digital screens decreases our
blink rate. Lubricating drops often help to relieve dry eyes caused by
decreased blinking.
Spend at least two to three hours outdoors each day away from any
technological devices, and do activities that require focusing on distance
and outdoor play.
Ensure that monitors are positioned at eye level, directly in front of
the face.
Avoid using digital devices 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.
Stress. A fast-paced life. Lack of sleep. An
unbalanced diet. Hormonal changes.
All of these are factors which cause
problem skin. Add in environmental
factors - UV rays, dust, air pollution - and
it’s no surprise a whopping 40 per cent of
adult women are affected by acne-prone
skin. Key signs are irregular skin texture,
enlarged pores, blemishes - mainly along
the jawline and chin, and flare-ups - all
of which often lead to residual marks -
scarring. Eau Thermale Avéne Cleanance
Women has a range designed to correct
and soothe. There’s a Corrective Serum
(R369, helps reduce blemishes, tightens
pores, mattifies and refines skin texture),
and a Smoothing Night Cream (R349,
exfoliates and smoothes the skin, and
contains Retinaldehyde with helps reduce
residual marks and also targets the first
signs of aging. Both have Avéne Thermal
Spring Water which helps with soothing,
softening, irritation and hydration. You’ll
find it at Dis-Chem, Clicks, Woolworths and
online at dermastore.co.za
When it comes to breakouts and blackheads, there are a few key spot-busting
ingredients you need to have in your skincare arsenal. And Salicylic Acid is top of the
list. This game-changing ingredient is renowned among dermatologists and beauty
experts for its ability to calm and heal existing blemishes, and to prevent new ones
from forming. In fact, it’s often called acne’s biggest enemy. It’s oil-soluble which
means it can penetrate the skin at a deeper level than water-soluble ingredients,
and this is what makes it such an effective treatment for acne, breakouts and
blackheads. It dissolves the debris that clogs pores, ridding them of the dead skin
cells and oil that leads to white-and blackheads. It is also an effective exfoliator,
and has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that help calm and heal
existing breakouts. This Creightons Salicylic Acid 2% Salicylic Intense Serum
(R104.95) is well worth trying, as is Creightons Salicylic Acid Soothing Lotion
(R69.95), a lightweight, moisturising lotion which soothes and cares for angry,
blemish-prone skin without clogging pores or feeling too heavy on the skin.
There’s also a Salicylic Acid Foaming Clay Cleanser and Exfoliating Tonic in the
range, which you’ll find at Dis-Chem.
Mandelic Acid (improves recovery time), and Retinyl Acetate
action spot treatment gel that targets skin imperfections and
blemishes. The lifecycle of the blemish is reduced, leading
to less inflammation and an improved cosmetic appearance,
while the mattifying formula reduces excess oiliness and
shine, helping to prevent the reoccurrence of lesions.
Struggling with acne, be it in your teens or
as an adult, is always distressing. We’ve just
discovered this new ACleo kit, which could
be just the thing to help you win the war
against breakouts ... and put you on the path
to clear and radiant skin. Each kit contains an
oral supplement and a topical spot treatment.
The supplement’s ingredients – zinc and
vitamin B – help calm the inflammation in
your skin, allow existing pimples to heal
faster, and to prevent the formation of further
breakouts. These two ingredients also help
regulate your body’s oil production, so bonus
win! Then there’s the topical spot treatment,
which calms inflammation, kills the bacteria
that causes acne and prevents your skin from
becoming congested. When used together,
the two will result in a quicker healing of
acne, a lessening in the formation of scars and
dark marks, prevention of more acne forming,
and, with constant use, clearer skin. From
Sweet dreams
Sleepy ideas for mums and dads ... and their babes!
Sshhhh ... the sweet, sweet sound of baby sleeping
Just imagine. Your babe waking up after the sun rises and
sleeping long restorative naps during the day. Nope, you’re
not dreaming. It can really happen.
Born out of the many mornings Tamsin Glass and her little
boy, Riley, beat the first rays of sun to a new day ... she was
determined to come up with a range of products that
promote healthy sleep.
“A lack of sleep opens you up to physical and mental health
problems, and like all new moms, I was running off love,
little sleep, and 50 Shades of dark circles under my eyes. I
was desperate for something that would keep Riley and me
in sweet slumber a little longer and turn our home from a
tired haze to a happy haven,” she says.
And what she came up with was Dreamy Days - a
collection of carefully curated products, simplistic in design,
functional, and tested by sleep consultants.
First up ... the Dream Pod. It’s all about white noise ... which
helps babies fall asleep, and stay in that deep sleep state,
by providing a comforting and soothing noise and masking
the many sounds that can startle and wake a baby. The
continuous calming sound helps babies drift off, but there
are more benefits, too. It’s a sleep cue, so they know it’s
nap time, it drowns out noise in the home allowing for
uninterrupted peaceful sleep, it mimics the sound of the
womb, which creates calmness and security, allows your
baby or toddler to link sleep cycles and stay asleep and
trains the brain to relax.
Also helping with sleep are the Dreamy Days 100 per
cent Blackout Blinds. These help make sure your child is
getting sufficient amounts of Melatonin (produced when
in darkness) needed for a good night’s sleep. And get this
... these Blackout Blind use electrostatic technology ... you
simply tear over a perforated line or cut to fit the size of the
window and voila - 100 per cent blackout. Brilliant for when
you travel or drop babe off with gran for the night.
There are loads more products for sleepy heads on the site
... pop over and see. Details: Dreamy Days info .... dreamydays.
But not before you enter our competition. We’re giving
away a Dreamy Day Bundle, worth R2095. It’s the ultimate
sleep gift for a new mom and a fab baby shower gift.
It includes a Dreamy Days Blackout Blind, a White Noise
Machine and a Dreamy Days Luxury Blanket - a luxury
blanket, gorgeous and soft, perfect to wrap up your baby
for night feeds. You’ll find the competition deets on our
when counting sheep
just doesn’t help
Some of us are heavy sleepers and enjoy
a good night’s rest no matter what. But for
others ... we struggle to fall asleep, or wake up
a few times during the night or unreasonably
early in the morning. And that makes us
tired, irritable and stressed the following day,
which more often than not leads to further
insomnia issues.
So while our genetic makeup may have a
lot to do with the quality of sleep we can
expect to have in our adult lives, there may
be many other factors leading to insomnia
and anxiety.
These can include:
• A stressful work, home life or situation
• Inability to switch off brain activity at the
end of the day
• An excess of stimulants - we’re blaming you,
coffee, but all caffeine, certain medications,
rich food or sugary drinks as well as alcohol
• Eating food that is too spicy or acidic, which
can lead to stomach pains that keep us awake
• Lack of exercise for de-stressing
• A noisy environment
• Not allowing ourselves enough time to
sleep ... setting the alarm for too early in
the morning
• Using a mattress that is too soft or too hard
• A general sense of not feeling safe at night
• Unsuitable room temperature, leading to
sweats or chills that wake us up or stop us
from falling asleep
• A sleep disorder such as sleep apnea
(irregular breathing and oxygen-level issues)
• Excessive exposure to blue light before
bedtime (such as a cellphone, tablet
or any other electronic device), which
blocks serotonin.
The cover may be new but
it’s the same story that’s been
told to sleepy children by
hopeful parents since it was
first written in 1962. It’s a case
of the rhyming yawns in the
60th anniversary edition of
the Dr Seuss’s Sleep Book.
It starts with a very small bug
who yawns a very big yawn,
setting off (as yawns do) a chain
reaction, until ninety-nine zillion,
nine trillion and two creatures
are sleeping! So ... How about
you? R185 from Exclusive Books.
remedy); Humulus lupulus (hops - a flowering plant well-known for its use in the brewing
industry, which has also been used since time immemorial as a natural sleep aid and anxiety
remedy), and Valerian root (used traditionally to treat anxiety and sleep problems, it has a
soothing effect on the brain, and alleviates stress and insomnia.) You can buy online from
Teens & stress
A helpful 10-point plan to help teens cope with stress and anxiety
Studies have shown that nearly one
in three adolescents aged 13 to 18
will experience an anxiety disorder.
And these numbers have been rising
steadily. Between 2007 and 2012,
anxiety disorders in children and
teens increased 20 per cent.
What’s going on? Genetics, brain
chemistry, personality, and life events
all contribute. But today’s teens also
need to cope with high expectations
and pressure to succeed in a world
that feels scary and threatening
and expectations created by social
media. Something has to give.
When your teen is feeling
overwhelmed by stress, they could
start to withdraw, to become
aggressive and anxious and their
schoolwork and friendships can
start to suffer. They may become
physically ill because their body has
limited nutritional reserves left to
support the immune system. They
may even resort to poor coping
skills ... drug or alcohol abuse, or
impulsive behaviour.
It goes without saying that stressed
out teenagers need their parents to
support them. But parents also lead
busy, stressful lives and it isn’t always
easy to notice when your teenager
is feeling overwhelmed. And it’s not
always easy knowing what to do.
This 10-point plan has some
suggestions for you to give them
that really do work.
Be mindful of stressors It can be
easier to just put your head down
and keep moving forward without
giving much thought to how you
are feeling. Encourage your teen to
take a breather and check in with
themselves regularly. It’s better to
deal with stressors sooner rather
than later.
Avoid unnecessary stress We all
know teenagers who seem to love
the drama of life and seem to create
their own stress. Teach your teen to
pick their battles. Not everything is
worth spending energy on.
Focus on the things you can
change Not everything is under
our control. Your high-schooler can’t
decide when the geometry test is
going to be, or whether they will be
picked for the soccer team. But they
can get out of bed 10 minutes earlier
to make it to school on time and they
can control their schedules to make
time to study for their tests.
Exercise regularly It may seem like
adding exercise to the daily routine
is just another stressor. But physical
activity makes it much easier to
manage the stress of everyday life
as it releases hormones that make
us feel good and help to reduce
stress hormones.
Enjoy relaxing activities It’s really
important to take time out to relax. It’s
not a waste of time and it’s not being
selfish. Whether it is yoga, a walk with
the dog, a good laugh with friends or
doodling in a journal, spending some
time doing the things you enjoy will
boost your mental health.
Good nutrition The basis of good
health is good nutrition as it provides
the body with the nutrients it needs
to support you physically
and mentally, and in times of
overwhelming stress it can be useful
to supplement your diet with
nutrients known to support mental
health. Bioteen’s range of
supplements and functional foods are
formulated specifically for teenagers
to support their health and wellness,
study, mood and stress, and sports
and exercise.
Get a good night’s sleep Everything
seems better after a good sleep.
Encourage your teen to go to bed
early enough to ensure they get
eight to 10 hours of sleep every night.
Avoid electronic devices at least one
hour before sleeping as the light from
screens can suppress the release of
melatonin, which is the hormone that
promotes sleep.
Try meditation Meditating trains
your mind to focus and redirect your
thoughts and has been proven to
provide many mental and physical
health benefits. In fact, a three year
study among teens recently found
that using a mindfulness app resulted
in significant reductions in worry
that lasted up to six months, as well
as some decline in symptoms of
depression and anxiety.
Talk it out Encourage your teen to
talk about what is bothering them.
It helps to feel that the problem is
shared. They can talk to you, a friend,
a counsellor or a therapist. If they trust
you with their concerns, listen to the
way they speak and take special note
of the type of language – and body
language – they use.
Get involved Feeling that you are part
of something and that you are making
a difference is a great way to boost
self-esteem and positive feelings. Join
a team, get involved at church or
volunteer to help others less fortunate.
How else can you help? Adults don’t
always have the best coping skills,
but if you learn how to manage your
stress in helpful, positive ways, you
can teach your teenager to do the
same by being a positive role model.
Actively support your teen through
the hard times ... it always helps to
know that they have someone who
cares about them in their corner. And
above all, teaching them to identify
when they are feeling stressed and
how to effectively manage their stress
will set them up for a calmer, more
fulfilling life.
The Bioteen range of nutritional
supplements is made for
teenagers, from 13 to 19, with
nutrition support for school, sport,
general health and wellness. They
help in combating anxiety and
stress and are made with highquality,
natural food-based active
ingredients and formulated in
the correct, effective quantities
for a developing teenage body.
A journey with autism
When autism came knocking at Ilana Gerschlowitz’s door, she didn’t give up.
She fought for him, and for others with this diagnosis, too.
Compiled by: KYM ARGO
Ilana and Martin Gerschlowitz were an ordinary South African
couple. Young. Newly married. Bright, promising futures
ahead. That is before autism came knocking on their door.
For ten months, their baby David was perfect ... smiling,
lifting his head, playing peek-a-boo. Then came recurring ear
infections, diarrhoea, and a high fever which led to hospital.
When he got home, everything had changed. “We suddenly
noticed that our son didn’t want to look at us anymore. This
was frightening. He also showed no interest in playing our
usual games of peek-a-boo. The laughs, smiles or reactions
that ‘normal’ babies his age use to communicate were gone;
the sparkle in his eyes had dimmed … and the countless trips
to doctors, specialists and therapists began. Life as we knew
it – and as I’d so carefully planned it – was over,” says Ilana.
At 20 months, a developmental specialist delivered, quite
harshly, the diagnosis. David had autism. “He will never speak,
go to school, be toilet-trained, have friends, get married, or
hold down a job. Take out an insurance policy and see a
psychologist,” she said.
Unwilling to accept the hopelessness of an autism prognosis,
the couple set out to rescue him from the fortress that kept
him from them. Never giving up, Ilana spent every waking
moment researching the illness until she found answers. And
when autism struck again, threatening another son’s future,
their mission became clear. This was not a fight they were
prepared to lose.
Subsequently, drawing from international experts, Ilana has gone on to help
countless children facing learning challenges.
Raised on a farm in the Free State, moving to Joburg to pursue a career in law -
she completed her B.Com (LLB) at the University of the Witwatersrand and was
subsequently admitted and practised as an attorney. In 2009 Ilana hosted the
landmark Challenging Children Conference in South Africa. This event provided
a platform for the presentation of the latest treatments and developments in
autism. She then went on to become the founding director of The Star Academy,
a specialist autism centre that has academies around the world, and which is
affiliated with CARD, world leaders in autism treatment. The academy provides
applied behavioural analysis instruction to children with autism. Ilana also
established Catch Up Kids, which helps children overcome learning challenges.
She continues to light the way for many parents who are battling autism or
learning difficulties.
She’s now written a personal memoir ... a story of a journey few parents would
ever want to encounter, a story of the tenacity of a mother fighting to give her
children their best lives, and achieving the apparently impossible. In her prologue,
she writes ”In telling our story, we share what we have gone through and the
details of David’s diagnosis and treatment, passing on our first-hand knowledge
and experience of what it means to be the parents of a child with autism. What
we’ve learnt over the years is that in autism there is only one constant – which is
that each child is different. As the saying goes ‘If you’ve met one individual with
autism, you’ve met one individual with autism.’ This book is not just about David’s
story. It’s about a family with three beautiful boys, and our journey into the world
of autism. This is our story of staggering heartbreak, searing honesty and, most
importantly, monumental victories.”
ENJOY THE RIDE
With our country’s beautiful scenery,
cultural history and unique flora,
biking holidays and exploring the
great outdoors on two wheels are fast
becoming a popular choice amongst
families. You’ve done the research and
found the perfect destination for your
next family bike vacay, now it’s time
to line up your family’s gear and get
ready to hit the road.
Exploring new places with the family
means lots of pedalling, especially for
the little ones. Sometimes just coming
along for the ride can be enough for
them ... all they (and you) want is to
be safe, cosy and not miss a moment
while riding around in a new place.
A multisport bike trailer is the perfect
addition to any young family’s
adventure and is the best way to
ensure you see all the sights with the
kids on board. They will be happy and
comfortable in their spacious cockpit
with plenty of windows, pockets for
the snacks, and a five-point harness to
keep them safe.
The Thule Coaster XT Bike Trailer is
a robust, basic bike trailer that offers
a safe, comfortable ride and easily
transforms into a stroller once you
Great options for your next family biking adventure
reach your destination. It comfortably
seats two kids, folds flat for simple
storage and transport and has extra
storage space for carrying bags and
extra cargo.
Another option is the Thule
Chariot Cross 1 Multifunctional
Child Carrier, which gives you
the freedom to enjoy almost any
outdoor adventure with your child.
Designed for active families who want
a versatile, tough and stylish bike
trailer, and who love being outdoors
all year round, the all-round trailer and
stroller offer comfort and flexibility for
families with an active lifestyle, and
the optional Jogging Kit makes it a
great training partner. An extra large
cargo bag provides additional space
for what you need to bring. With one
or more of the packages, this chariot
transforms to let you stroll, bike or run.
An alternative is to invest in a good
child bike seat that will allow you
and the kids enjoy the everyday bike
rides, safely, easily and in style. A
bike seat is a great choice for letting
your child see the world from your
bike and allow them to share in your
passion for cycling. When it comes
to choosing between a front or rear
child bike seat, it all comes down to
personal preference.
Rear child bike seats have a higher
weight capacity and larger footprint
to accommodate children up to
22 kg. The Thule RideAlong Lite
Rear Child Bike Seat is a strong and
reliable rear-mounted seat designed
for daily commutes and adventures.
The easy-to-use recline feature is
also ideal for those longer rides that
overlap with nap time.
On the other hand, front child bike
seats offer the best view for you
and your child. While they have a
front-row seat for every two-wheel
adventure, you can also keep an
eye on them while taking in your
surroundings. The Thule Yepp Nexxt
Mini is one of the lightest seats on
the market with a smart design for
rides around town.
Every parent, child, and bicycle is
unique, so it’s important to consider
all of your options to ensure the
best fit for your family that will give
you and your precious passenger
a safe, easy, and enjoyable ride.
Holiday camp fun!
While sending your child to a holiday camp might sound a little daunting,
chances are it is exactly what they need. And, having recently been given a ‘sneak
peek’ into a typical Sugar Bay holiday camp, we can pretty much guarantee that
if they do go, they won’t want to come home afterwards!
Text: LEAH SHONE
There is nothing quite like seeing kids playing
and interacting freely with each other, faceto-face,
without a digital device in sight.
Even more wonderful is seeing them being
given full, undivided attention from the
adults looking after them. In truth, this is
something that even we, as parents, often
struggle to do.
With water slides, skateboards, rope swinging,
arts and crafts, drama, body boarding, ocean
swimming and loads of other activities on
offer, Sugar Bay is a little slice of heaven for
children aged between six and 17 years old.
There is something to literally keep every
child busy, entertained and happy at this
beautiful resort situated in the coastal village
of Zinkwazi on the North Coast of KZN.
After having spent a few days and nights
with the kids and counsellors at Sugar Bay,
we realised however that the real magic of
this place lies in the human connection and
relationships the kids form while having the
time of their lives.
It’s been a rough couple of years for our
children. Lockdowns, masks and spending
way too much time in front of screens
instead of playing with peers have all had
a negative effect on both their mental and
physical wellness.
It’s for this reason, despite everything she and her team have faced, that Sugar
Bay founder Zoe Ellender remains steadfast in her decision to keep the camp
open.
“Our children need this now more than ever,” says Zoe, who started the camp 20
years ago. “The world is a very different place compared to when we first opened.
Children are so protected and spend too much time in front of screens. They
desperately need to connect, interact and socialise with each other.”
Learning to spend time away from their parents, too, is an important part of
their emotional development, she says. “What is amazing, is that it is usually the
anxious kids who gain the most from spending a week with us. The children who
are shy or nervous in the beginning are usually the ones who get on stage and
confidently share their stories around the campfire on our final nights.”
Based on the typical American-styled summer camp, Sugar Bay is the only
sleepover resort in South Africa that has been built and run for children only. No
parents are allowed!
Children travel from all around South Africa (and overseas) to spend a week or
two at a Sugar Bay holiday camp, where they make memories to last a lifetime.
Sugar Bay also offers school tours outside of the holiday seasons.
The camp is well-maintained and the kids sleep in wooden cabins nestled in a
forest-like setting. There are two or more counsellors assigned to each cabin (kids
are never left unsupervised) and boys’ and girls’ cabins are separate and secure
with campers divided according to their grade.
The professionally-engineered resort is comfortable, homey and very secure.
There is a 25m swimming pool with three waterslides, a soccer field, five-sided
climbing tower and obstacle and ropes courses. There is also a grand hall and
dining room area, an arts and crafts centre, indoor sport hall and a tuckshop.
Sugar Bay has private access to both the lagoon and beach - and all the water
toys required for loads of summer fun!
One of the highlights of a stay at Sugar Bay is definitely mealtime. The food is
nutritious and tasty and made completely with kids in mind. It’s quite amazing,
actually, to see how even the fussiest of eaters devour their breakfast, lunch and
dinner (and snacks in-between) and, best of all, how they all work together to
clean up their table and eating space afterwards.
The thing that stands out above all though (and likely one of the most important
aspects for parents), is the calibre of counsellors at Sugar Bay. Often students
on holiday or those taking a gap year, the counsellors have all been extensively
vetted and trained (in emergency first response and child psychology) and they
all love what they do.
“When I started the camp, I underestimated the impact the counsellors would
have on the kids,” says Zoe. “I’ve since realised that it’s not about having the best
SUP boards, skateboards and waterslides … it’s about the human interaction.”
All the counsellors are fully engaged and passionate and bring their own skills
and talents to the camp - which means there are always different classes and
activities on offer, from dancing and yoga to martial arts, crab catching and flower
identification.
Sugar Bay also recently launched a counsellor’s academy (a three-month master
class or 11-month gap year programme), where young adults gain useful
qualifications and experience with things like lifeguarding, scuba diving and
boating.
“I know that what we do is incredibly important and I believe one hundred per
cent in all the benefits. I truly think that every child should go to camp at least
once in their lifetime,” says Zoe.
