Page 6B THE BEACON July 2022 AURORA By Margaret Drury Community Correspondent aurora@goBEACONnews.com Spring just FLEW by, and summer is upon us. As I look through my list of recent activities in our city, I can see why the time seems to have flown by. To start, we had very busy clean-up days that were city-wide. Members of South Dearborn High School (SDHS) were a big help pulling weeds, spreading mulch, and painting curbs, picnic tables, and probably themselves! Saint Mary’s students helped serve lunch to the volunteers. Seeing these young people freely give of their time (AND giving it on a school day no less! ! ! LOL) to make our city a more beautiful place was a breath of fresh air. Thank you to EVERYONE who helped on that day by donating time and resources- SDHS and St. Mary’s students and staff, Aurora Lions Club, Main Street Aurora, Aurora Garden Club, Aurora Park board members, O ur Charlotte Hastings supervising a group of SDHS students spreading mulch. Communities Briana DeSanctis,thru-hiker, writer, backpacker, speaker, outdoorswoman. City of Aurora Street, Parks, and Utility departments, Debi Hornsby, and many more. During lunch that day, I noticed an unfamiliar young woman who was hiking through. She was looking intently at her phone, so I asked her if she needed help or directions. Turns out, she is Briana DeSanctis from Maine and was looking for a place to have lunch. Needless to say, I invited her to join us for lunch. On New Year’s Day this year, Ms. DeSanctis began her solo hike of the American Discovery Trail in Delaware at the Atlantic Ocean. She hopes to be in the Rocky Mountains by mid-July but has set no time limit for completing her journey to the Pacific Ocean. For Briana, the journey is about meeting new friends. She will be the first woman to complete this 5,057-mile trail. You can follow my new friend on Facebook.com/rockygoeshiking. Not many days after Briana passed through Aurora, a large group from Illinois who were taking a River hop riverboat tour stopped in Aurora. They had a brief visit to a nearby alpaca farm and were quite the friendly bunch. Their next stop was Vevay, Indiana with the final stop in Louisville for the Kentucky Derby. I LOVE making new friends! A different kind of horsepower could be seen in Aurora on May 4. The first Wednesday Car shows have started once again on lower Second Street. This first show of the year boasted thirty-seven cars. Winners included Chris Wood (1955 Chevy), Tom Wiley (1963 Corvette), Kris Koons (1957 Chevy), and Matt Seiter (1964 Mustang). The next evening featured the National Day of Prayer event at Veraestau overlooking the Ohio River and the City of Aurora. The simple yet majestic gathering was of the faithful who came together to worship God The AES Sixth grade classes held a “Pennies for the Pool” fundraiser for new Aurora Community Pool. JJ South (6th grade), Kathy South (Aurora Park Board member), Denise Rose (Director of Aurora Parks), Mark Drury (Mayor), and Brooklynn Reeves (6th grade) and pray for our city and our nation. The view from up there is beautiful. A few days later on Saturday before Mother’s Day, Hillforest hosted a delightful Mother’s Day Brunch. From the photos that Clyde Thies shared, the event appeared to be quite the elegant yet laid-back event with scrump-dilly-icious food enjoyed by a full house. Aurora resident Cameron Clark recently received a scholarship from the Dearborn County Home Builders Association. Cameron is a Senior and will be applying for an apprenticeship in the building trades this summer. He plans to follow in the footsteps of his uncle who is a licensed electrician. The Dearborn County Home Builders Association was formed in 1992 by a group of local businessmen that looked at all businesses not as competitors, but as businesses working toward the same goal. The Vietnam veterans have been working diligently for the last several years to create a Vietnam Memorial at Lesko Park. The dream is finally realized, a Huey helicopter is now perched on a pedestal, looking as if it were going to land near the river. Thank you, men, for your service to our country. Before I sign out for this month, I have to say thank you to a group of sixthgraders at Aurora Elementary School (AES) who had a fundraiser called, “Pennies for the Pool.” Brooklynn Reeves and JJ South, grandson of Aurora Park Board member Kathy South, were point persons. Their classes voted on ideas for the fundraiser, made a slide show, and calculated the cost of supplies. Donation buckets were placed in each classroom of AES, resulting in a collection of $1,250 for the new community pool. The winning classes who collected the most money were Ms. Schuman’s third-grade class and Ms. Gabbard’s secondgrade class. Way to go kiddos for a job well done! Take care and God bless. July 2022 THE BEACON Page 7B LAWRENCEBURG By Debbie Acasio Community Correspondent lawrenceburg@goBEACONnews.com Lawrenceburg residents, like most all tristate area residents, are anxiously awaiting the activities that come with warm, summer weather. A lot was happening in Lawrenceburg in April and May- from The Cruisin For a Cure car show, to spring cleanup, to renting bikes on the Dearborn Trail. More than one person has said they are counting the days until the first outdoor concert at the Downtown Civic Park. However, we did not allow the chilly temperatures (yes it snowed the Monday after Easter!) to keep away Easter activities, including a visit from the Easter Bunny. The ASG formerly known as the Arch Street Gang managed to pull off a fantastic egg hunt at the Babe Ruth Park near the Community Center, filling it with hundreds of candy-filled eggs. Some eggs had a paper entitling the lucky child to pick from a treasure trove of prizes. The Easter Bunny appeared for great photo opportunities. Lawrenceburg resident Laura Wilson, daughter of O ur Monitors/employees of Lawrenceburg Community Center left to right Adrian Bryant, Gabrielle Eldridge, Gabrielle Dole, Jordan Inman at the Grand Reopening. Linda Wilson and the late Buddy Wilson, has been putting her Master’s degree in music performance from Miami University to great use lately. Her expertise with percussion instruments has earned her the opportunity to substitute at the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. This makes for late nights for this hard-working young woman. Congratulations, Laura! Her training in the music department within Lawrenceburg schools (and beyond) has served her well. Always looking for a way to keep the kids at Lawrenceburg Primary School motivated, teachers recently encouraged the kids to pick a partner and dress like twins for a day of fun. Amber Lansing opted instead for a quadruplet day when she made four cute little Tiger second graders very happy by making them matching shirts for the day. While not a school-sponsored event, the Nerf Wars are back. If you haven’t heard Communities Guilford resident Liz Baur at Community picnic with children Josey and Cam. The local police departments are looking the other way (within limits) to allow these teenagers to just be kids. Stay safe kids but have fun! A photo was in last month’s edition of Olivia Leiker, daughter of Jared and Sarah Leiker at All Saints Parish. But I misspelled it, Lecher. My sincere apologies. Congratulations to Hope Fox, who was selected for Girl’s MVP at East Central’s Varsity Track and Field Invitational. She scored 30.5 points for her team Hope Fox and also tied with the boys’ leader Justin Re from N O W A C C E P T I N G C O N S I G N M E N T S A N T I Q U E S • V I N T A G E C O L L E C T I O N S • M I L I T A R Y R E T R O • M O R E ! Elder. She not only excels in Basketball and now in Track. What an amazing athlete. Hope is the daughter of Josh and Robin Fox of Dover. What proud parents they must be. The East Central Winter Percussion Ensemble won the Winter Guard International World Title. This is the school’s first world title as stated by East Central High School Band Director Andrew Scharf. This group did an amazing job especially since one-third of them are eighthgraders. Members of the group are Nate Bailey, Kathryn Brice, Riley Ealy, Moses Gutapfel, Owen Hasenzahl, Logan King, Noah Ledbetter, Owen Mersmann, Logan Reddell, Sarah Roszell, Julianne South, Leah South, Peter Williams, and Maddie Zurweller.
