Magnify
Letter from the Team
Dear Reader,
When reflecting on the George Fox community, who we are both as a collective
and as individuals, we have found ourselves dwelling on the relationships, unique
opportunities, experiences, and the environments we interact with as a student
body.
As humans, we find ourselves with an innate desire to be known. We are created
to exist in community. Our mission as The Student Collective is to utilize this
platform to foster community and strive to make you more known.
This mission led us to our theme, “Magnify.”
To magnify is to zoom in on the smaller, finer details of something in order to
gain a more complete understanding of the whole. Magnification is used in a
variety of fields to learn and discover. What…Why…Where. Ultimately, leading
to a greater understanding of the Who.
By zooming in on the intricacies of life at Fox, amplifying individual stories
and highlighting the little moments, we hope to learn more about the greater
community and identity of George Fox.
Without further ado, pick up a magnifying glass (just kidding we wrote this in
large enough font for you to read), and enjoy the VIII volume of The Student
Collective.
Sincerely,
The Student Collective Team

What was your favorite experience from your time
abroad?
My favorite experiences during my time abroad were all the
moments I was able to explore the beautiful country of Ecuador
alongside some of my closest friends that I met through my
semester abroad. Through traveling and living in a different
country, with a unique culture that is very different from that of
the US, I gained a whole new appreciation and perspective for
God’s creation, both through the people He created in the likeness
of His image and through the breathtaking pieces of nature that
emanate His presence.
How did your time abroad contrast with your other
semesters at Fox?
As a senior, I look back at the last eight semesters of my college
career with fondness of the memories that I have made and
gratitude for the friends that I made them with. This is especially
true for my semester abroad. My time living in Ecuador will
forever be a highlight of, not only my four years at George
Fox, but my life as well, as this was truly a once in a lifetime
experience.

What’s the most important thing you learned in your time abroad?
The most important thing I learned during my time abroad is the art of intentionality. This can come
in many different forms: intentionally pouring into the people you care most about; intentionally
seeking God’s kingdom on a daily basis; intentionally learning about a culture or people that share both
differences and similarities to your own; or intentionally speaking a language foreign to you, even if that
means embarrassing yourself time and time again. Although I am far from perfect at this practice, I have
grown tremendously and I believe that both my relationship with God and my relationships with others
are a true reflection of this growth.
Feel free to share anything else about your time abroad:
Thank you to the Study Abroad office, specifically Lynn Scott and David Martinez, who made it possible
to study abroad amidst COVID-19. It was a semester I will never forget and I am beyond grateful for the
experience.

What was your favorite experience from your time abroad?
My favorite moment would be a reel filled with the different faces that have given me a completely different worldview. The different faces that represent a
place. I would capture the laughter of the inside jokes that were made. Friendships that I know will last a lifetime. I would capture the meals that were shared that
introduced so much culture in a single breath. I would capture the places that took my breath away…places that I had only seen in movies, read about in books,
and places that I had only dreamed of. I would capture the feeling of courageousness that certain tasks asked of me, the insatiable desire to be curious and ask a
million questions, the note on my phone that categorized 11 different languages that I learned the basics of. I would capture the experience of courage and fear
with exploring 4 countries on my own as a young brown female. I would capture the moments where I felt welcomed and a sense of belonging. I would capture
the moments where I survived and thrived yet another week that I thought I was not going to be able to get through. I would capture the wonderful feeling of not
knowing and being okay with that. I would capture the sounds of listening to the different languages around me and the different English accents all demonstrating
that there is not a single original way to speak the English language. I would capture hitchhiking with strangers, sharing the Spanish language and Latinx culture
with my roommates, the countless days spent at the beach, the nights dancing with friends, the incredible thrift finds, the 1 euro coffee, the tiny forks served with
every pastry, the amazement in my face when I saw my roommate’s laptop with the Cyrillic alphabet instead of the Latin alphabet, friends asking me “Hey Ivette,
want to go to Sweden, it’s only 10 euros?!” on a whim and realizing that no other place in the world have these things ever been possible.
How did your time abroad contrast with your other semesters at Fox?
During my time abroad, whenever I had to choose between an assignment and developing a strong connection or relationship with someone, I chose the person. I
would enter the study room and my friends would enter and we would engage in conversation with each other for hours! I would be left with the assignment undone.
But I went to sleep that night knowing one thing, I was happier and more satisfied with myself by choosing the people over the assignment. I wonder how
much of this was attributed to my senioritis or being abroad, or perhaps a mixture of both.
What’s the most important thing you learned in your time abroad?
During my time abroad, I only had 4 months to plant, nourish, and grow relationships with the
people around me. It taught me about the art of goodbyes and the art of meeting new people.
Some of the best advice I got before going abroad was to not be afraid to invest and nurture the
relationships because of the time we had. Every connection, every friendship, and every conversation
were all worth it. I do not view it as wasted energy just because I will not be back to LCC
or with the same people…I view it as honoring the people and time around me. Because of this,
I developed very strong and reliable friendships. Throughout the personal growth that a semester
abroad entails, friends who can keep up with that growth and grow alongside you are needed. I
learned what steadfast, loyal, and caring friends are like.
Feel free to share anything else about your time abroad:
If I could give anyone the gift of travel, I would. The gift of truly getting to know people, places,
and things in the world. I think traveling opens up the world and personalizes it. It empowers to
love thy neighbor more fiercely and care about what is going on in their side of the world.
In order to enrich the intercultural and international awareness of our campus community, George Fox
offers a transportation-subsidized overseas course of approximately three weeks to any junior student
who has fulfilled the appropriate requirements. Students are able to sign up for a trip via a lottery system
during the tent city event!
Countries visited while abroad: Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Austria, Ukraine, Germany, France,

It’s difficult to sum up what I’ve discovered during my time at Fox because of the
transformative nature of my experience as a student and now as a professional. I think
one point that I could touch on would be the wealth of community.
During my time as a student, I often found myself needing to rely on others because
of difficult circumstances. As a first generation college student who was financially
independent from my family, I faced additional stress and uncertainty as I navigated
my four years in undergrad. However, what I discovered at Fox was a community of
people who came around me and beside me, and would not let me fall. I discovered
mentors who listened, shared wisdom, and prayed with me. I discovered staff who
made it their mission to ensure that I received every bit of support they could muster,
and who believed that I was capable. I discovered friends who made me better,
challenged my thinking, and encouraged me to grow.
One person, specifically, who magnified my experience at George Fox was Dr. Steve
Winterberg, my international studies professor. Throughout my time as a student, he
invited me into challenging academic spaces and engaged with me on a personal level.
Two especially impactful things come to mind. First, during our advising
sessions, Steve always made a point to pray with his students and bless
their upcoming year. The way that he intertwined academic growth
and spiritual growth was distinctly graceful. Second, was his
belief in me. Steve knew that I eventually wanted to continue
onto graduate school and eventually gain a doctoral degree.
At some point my sophomore year, I greeted him as “Dr.
Winterberg” as I passed him on the quad and he greeted me
back as “Dr. Glockling”. This exchange soon became our
norm and an inside joke, but also encouraged me because
I knew that he believed I would get there someday.
The Biology Department here at Fox is a place that has allowed me to be known
on campus. I have been able to ask professors questions about both science and
faith. When professors check in about life outside of the classroom it helps me stay
motivated in my goals and passions.
Another place I feel known is on the Track & Field team. My coaches and
teammates have always built me up and allowed me to express the better parts of
who I am, helping to strengthen my faith and character. It is such a strong source
of community in my life! This leads me into answering who has magnified my
time here at Fox. My roommate Ellie, my genetics professor Matt Stump, close
teammates and coaches have helped make my time at Fox worthwhile. These people
combine to make an extremely important piece of my life and I am so grateful to
have their shining lights surrounding me.
My go-to coffee drink here in Newberg is a blended, dirty, spiced
chai (especially good from Sip City)! A few fun places in the
Newberg area are the Alpacas of Oregon, the hills up
near Bald Peak, Critter Cabana, and Chapters!
Sunsets from the big slide park and Dos Mundos tacos!
Sunsets front the big slide park and Dos Mundos are just
a couple of my favorite things in Newberg.
Black drip coffee is my forever go-to drink :)

Community is everywhere at Fox. Moving here my freshman year, I didn’t know anyone, didn’t know
my way around campus, didn’t have anyone to turn to. It took all of an hour to realize that the 3 guys I
was rooming with would be some of the best friends anyone could have. Hadlock opened a month after I
came to Fox, and it ignited my passion for bouldering. I have a solid group of friends I’ve made through
the hours we have spent on the climbing wall while puzzling through hard routes. As an engineer, the
Maker Hub is my home. I’ve spent many, many hours there, working on projects, homework, and
presentations with my fellow engineers. The engineering program is its own community; everyone
knows one another, including the professors. All of us students work together, help each
other out, study together and slog through homework together. It’s also where I met my
amazing fiancée. I love you, Syd. Finally, I found a great community working for Plant
Services. I’ve been working grounds here at Fox for 2 years now, and it has been an
incredible two years working with such amazing and kind people.
I know that I have made an impact on many students here at Fox in many ways, but
one thing that I enjoy the most is getting to mentor freshman engineers. I’ve mentored
4 freshman engineers here at Fox. It’s been crazy and fun introducing them to the
engineering program, helping them along the way, giving them advice on life and projects,
and making friendships that bridge the gap between freshman and upperclassmen. I love teaching people
and sharing the knowledge that I have gained through my experiences; getting to help people in the shop
and the Maker Hub is one of the best parts of being an engineer here at Fox. One word of advice: you
don’t want to regret any of your time here, and as an engineer, I know I spent too much time on studies
and homework. Do yourself a favor, put the books down, and go spend time
with friends. They are more than worth getting a B in a class.
Newberg is a beautiful area, with a lot of hidden places to find. I would
suggest getting on a bike, picking a direction and not turning back until
the sun starts to set. Every road is beautiful going through the hills. Bald
Peak is one of my favorite spots to bike to. I also love walking down
to the river as well as downtown Newberg. If you haven’t, check out
Antique Freak & Flea on 2nd Street, you never know what you will
find in there. Now, I know it isn’t exactly close to Newberg, but
make sure you and some friends take at least one beach day trip
out to Pacific City. Finally, Nara Teriyaki is probably the
best restaurant in Newberg.

At Fox, I have begun the hard process of realizing and believing that I am not defined by others’
opinions and expectations of me. No matter how hard I work to succeed academically, decide
what I believe through theological and philosophical wrestling, and make responsible choices
to be a good human, it is impossible to please everyone. Rather than give up these challenging
aspects of growth, I have learned that I need to choose a different goal than being the person
others would like me to be. Additionally, I am continually realizing how expansive the love of
God is. Through the writings of saints, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and inside jokes with
Jesus, I recognize more and more the personal nature of the God of the Bible. God is wild,
passionate, and funny. Despite our vastly deepened relationship, beginning to know God has
taken away my ability to articulate God’s nature. God is too much for words. Finally, when I
began college, I was proud of my knowledge, but I was afraid of unimportant things: my future
career, etc. Now I recognize how small my knowledge is, and I have started to recognize what is
worthy of care and attention.
I have had several crises in college so far. Major shifts in my theology and worldview occurred
over time. Through such discussions as deciding whether or not I’m a heretic, piecing through
the theology of sex, and understanding the love of God, one professor has made a huge impact by
walking me through difficulties and particularities. Dr. Isaac Choi is a professor of theology and
the director of the Honors Program. He is an attentive listener even when my thoughts are not
well articulated. He is also a helpful role model and advisor. Even though I don’t agree with all
of his ideas, his convictions are solidly thought out and help me to see a broader
perspective when I get lost in details. Additionally, Olivia Brubaker has been
a steadfast source of the encouragement and love of Christ through my
often heavy and chaotic experiences in college. She has shown me what a
long-standing, healthy friendship practically looks like. I find it difficult
to trust people, but by her kindness and constancy, she has proved that
she is worthy of trust.
Coffee Cottage is wonderful, especially if you enjoy getting distracted
from homework by friends that are likely to be there at the same
time. I love going there early in the morning to have “office
hours” with friends, do homework, and overhear Bible studies.
Going on runs on Mountainview Road near the Allison Inn is
also a favorite spot of mine.
The Maker Hub is my current favorite spot to study.
During the warm months, I love sitting on a hidden
bench next to the amphitheater.

I am a long-distance runner, so I found my community in cross country and track. Joining a team
that made me feel like I was “known” was amazing. It wasn’t easy to be around my teammates
during my freshman year. Because of the experience I had with my high school teammates
during my junior and senior years of cross country, I didn’t have the greatest social experience.
It made me nervous, thinking I would be going through the same thing but after giving it a
chance for my first year, I realized that running on this team has significantly changed my life. I
promised myself that I would stay involved and stay motivated for others. Making that decision
turned my life around, and it truly magnified my experience.
There are so many people how have magnified my experience here. First, there are my parents.
I never thought I would be attending college in another state. When my parents and I were
having the conversation about me possibly attending GFU, I was happy to hear that they were
supportive and would be excited for wherever I ended up. Their support has been massive,
and I’m grateful for that! Then there’s also my friends. This goes towards anyone I’ve had a
class with, been teammates with, and anyone I’ve lived around over the last 4 years (Edwards,
Brandt, Newlin, Hodgin). Fox has allowed me to connect with so many people
and hear their stories. Regardless of if I am graduating with friends or have
friends that will still be around Fox after I graduate, I plan to stay connected with
everyone as much as possible. They are the ones that have made me the person
that I am today.
A person who magnified my experience here is Nathanael Ankeny, my Jazz Ensemble director.
Nathanael is an absolutely kind and encouraging educator, who often inspires the best in his
students. His mantra, “learning should be fun”, has been one that has defined my approach to
music and life all these years at Fox. I have been very grateful to have had Nathanael for a class
each semester since coming to Fox.
I have discovered my interest in multiple areas of my field of music, from the production of
music to the history and theory behind it. I also discovered a more varied and diverse love for
multiple genres spanning jazz, rock, classical, Broadway, and much more. One big discovery
I made was my interest in past and recent history and how they shape culture and politics on a
global scale. The COVID-19 Pandemic especially helped open my eyes to the real need to be
aware of the events happening in our world, and to pay attention to them carefully.
I am a commuter student, but I often spend the majority of my day on campus. So, often times,
you will find me either in Ross (the music building) or the Foxhole. I also love going to the
Human Bean and getting their Piña Colada smoothies.
I am a coffee person! I often default to an Almond Joy Mocha from Coffee
Cottage since it reminds me of my frequent drink orders in my hometown
of Chelan, Washington.
Over the years, I have found different places to have fun around
campus. You can always catch me at our track on campus for practice
and competitions with my teammates. Lately, I’m usually studying or
having people over for movies, game nights, dinners, etc. This has
been full of hangouts at my house, and I’ve enjoyed every minute
of it!

I have felt so known here at Fox. For example, I had the amazing opportunity last spring to
study abroad in the UK. The Center for Study Abroad has been such a great resource for me,
with so many opportunities. Even with so many uncertainties, I was still able to travel with Fox
and look forward to Juniors Abroad this spring. There are also more trails in the canyon than
I ever realized. With Fox being a liberal arts college, there is such an interdisciplinary manner
amongst students. I have known so many people who are in the STEM departments who enjoy
learning about and taking classes in humanities and vice versa. I myself have loved my classes
that are not within my major such as general biology, communications, TESOL, and political
science. My major classes have also enhanced my love of history and stretched my thinking and
challenged me in so many wonderful ways.
There have definitely been many places that I have found community here. Choir has been a
constant source of long lasting friendships and being known, with Danielle Warner being the
embodiment of being known. The Theatre Department has been so welcoming to me during this
past production of Godspell, with these performances being one of the highlights of my time at
Fox. I have also been a student employee at the College of Business and the Archives, connecting
me to people both within and outside of my major. Faculty and staff members that have become
such an integral part of my life include Caitlin Corning, David Martínez, Rachel Thomas, Lynn
Scott, Angeleen Umfleet, and Danielle Warner.
I am a sucker for chai lattes! At Coffee Cottage, I love their
oatmilk Chai Latte and Chapters has their infamous Pumpkin
Pie Chai (offered year round, too!).
The basement of the Library is a wonderful place to do
homework. I also often find myself walking throughout
the canyon. It is a great place to relax and just enjoy nature
without even leaving campus.

I am not a Quaker, but one spot I love is Newberg Friends Church. The
age of the place gives it both a dignity and a sanctity – the dignity of pre-war American church
architecture, and the sanctity from the generations of Friends who still in some way inhabit the
space – that is hard to find in the rest of town. If you can get into the sanctuary when it is raining
and leave the doors open and the lights off, the veil of the world can be very thin indeed.
My go-to order is a Strawberry Mango smoothie at Coffee Cottage. It’s healthy. I’ll also get the
milkshakes, which are probably about as healthy.
Perhaps it is trite, but the truth is that it is the students who have magnified my experience at
Fox. I’ve taught at Ivy League schools and other elite institutions and the students at Fox have an
enthusiasm and engagement that I haven’t seen elsewhere. Much of this may be because of their
faith, which makes them existentially engaged with the discussions in a way that secular students
sometimes find hard – it is easier to be mercenary or sociological about
these questions when your fundamental goals in life, at least so far as you
can articulate them, have to do with getting the best job, class position,
or the like. An evangelical faith also gives students a biblical literacy that
provides a shared foundation for probing these questions that is deeper than
just Marvel
movies, video games, and a hazy American mythos – and because
the foundation is deeper, it is easier to build higher upon it. Those
kinds of discussions are rewarding not just as a teacher, because they
are pedagogically flattering, but also as a person or student myself,
because I end up taking at least as much from the seminars as my
students.

The biggest discovery I was able to make at Fox was the opportunity I got to meet God. Before
coming to Fox I had never worshiped, gone to chapel or even heard about Vespers. Throughout
my time here I was blessed with the opportunity to build my faith and relationship with God.
Through faith learning integration, I was able to identify the very nature of God across all
disciplines. I learned how to combine my faith and learning, how to honor Christ, and how
to actively practice my faith. When leaving your home to come to college, it can be easy to
feel lonely and question the choices you’ve made. The opportunities George Fox has created
everyone allowed me to combine my purpose with my passion. As I prepare for the vocation
God has chosen for me, I feel excited and thankful. Through God’s will and my faith growing
journey at Fox, I have been equipped with the skills to have a faith-based mindset and behavior.
This is a huge benefit to me as I feel more encouraged in my spiritual maturity.
I will never forget Richard N. Muthiah, Ph.D, Director of Learning Support Services. Having
him come into our freshman Liba class to introduce himself was a
blessing in disguise; as I did not know just how much he would help me.
Dr. Muthiah helped me in my struggles in acclimating to the way things
worked in college. Being a first generation student I had no idea what to
expect and once I actually got here it became overwhelming, but Dr. Muthiah
made it his goal to help me in any way he could so I could get back on
track and focus on my classes and do what I came here to do. He did
just that, helping me both in and out of school and even reaching out
to help my family who has supported me throughout the years. Dr.
Muthiah magnified my experience at Fox because he was the first
person I met to fulfill George Fox’s “be known” promise.
Bald Peak is such a nice place to go if you want to be at peace. When
I first heard about it Freshman year, it sounded interesting but it
wasn’t until my junior year I actually got to visit it. It’s a great place
to be where you can literally be above the clouds and oversee a
panoramic view of the city.
I often found myself in the library. I used to go
from class to library and library to class. I was
trying too hard. I learned to create a healthy
balance between taking breaks, getting lunch,
and having an appropriate amount of study
time.
Story portraits
One of the qualities I admire at George Fox is our desire to know our students. At the heart of the ‘Be Known’
promise is a desire to see each individual as unique and beloved. Before this marketing slogan was selected,
the entire community participated in a survey that solicited information about what people liked about our
community.
According to research, when college students form meaningful relationships with trusted adults, their capacity
for resiliency grows.
The culture here provides incredible opportunities for young adults to interact meaningfully with older adults,
including their peers. Our community provides spaces for people to share their stories and for both parties to
engage in self-discovery.
As a student employee supervisor, it has been my pleasure to meet some fabulous students. While they each
had unique characteristics, they all have one thing in common: they hold a special place in my heart. As I’ve
listened to their stories, I have discovered that I am the one who has grown and changed. We have laughed and
cried a lot. Secrets revealed, fears exposed—all of this provided fertile ground for our relationship to thrive.
Many of us are still in touch today.
One of my favorite songs is Chris Tomlin’s ‘Indescribable.’ This song is about God having a personal
relationship with His creation. These words ring true for me because I have witnessed the indescribable
depths of God’s love throughout my life. But the words that always bring me to my knees speak to God’s
unconditional love for me.
You see the depths of my heart

advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed -- to be seen, heard,
and companioned exactly as it is.”
Ashley, a GFU alumna, is a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher in Oxford, England.
Ashley raises insects. She primarily raises Praying Mantis, but recently she’s
been sharing the most detailed photos of a newly acquired Black Beauty Walking
Stick. Using a high-powered camera lens, Ashley’s photos provide such intricate
images, allowing the viewer to see these creatures with great clarity.
Without her camera lens, we would miss the nuances of each insect. You’d
miss the modified appendages around their mouths manipulating prey as
they dine. Thanks to this magnification, we can see the uniqueness of each
insect. Let me tell you, they do not all look the same.
Our ‘camera lens’ is our ability to communicate and listen. As
Palmer says, witness each other. As our slogan suggests, Be
Known.

This year I got the opportunity to be part of the Residential Life team. Being an RA has
surrounded me with a group of super fun people who are genuine and intentional with their
interactions and words. They not only support me but everyone they encounter. Chatting
with them always leaves me feeling encouraged and fulfilled. This semester I have also gotten
the opportunity to get to know the Outdoor Recreation Team through being an apprentice.
Through OREC I have found people with similar interests and passions while teaching others
how to invest in the beautiful outdoors the Pacific Northwest offers.
My experience at Fox has been magnified by my professors as a whole and the way in which they
engage beyond the classroom. As someone who has participated in both an engineering and
financial planning major, I’ve experienced that different parts of every academic department
engage with students outside the classroom in different ways. The Engineering program has
the Engineer Your Soul (EYS) program which engages faith values and brings people together
outside the usual academic goal. Within the Business department I’ve experienced the
opportunity to form personal connections with professors. One of my professors
and I even read a book together because (if we can insert why that would be
dope).
As for my favorite drink, I will always go for an Americano with Oat
Milk from anywhere. However, Chapters does have a pretty good
Pumpkin Pie Chai.

I, like many other teenagers, thought I had life figured out when I was in high school. I had a strong
sense of identity and worked hard to equip myself with all the skills needed to accomplish undergraduate
studies. This haphazard foundation was quickly dissipated upon my arrival at Fox. My naive sense of self
was challenged by complex classes, course schedules, relationships, and theological questions. However,
George Fox University crafted the perfect environment needed to build me into the woman of faith I
wanted to be.
My identity was deeply ingrained in my family and my hometown, Sacramento. Moving into the dorms
was an abrupt transition, but Brandt Hall quickly adopted me into its unique family. Professors were
also quick to establish relationships with me, and students were eager to collaborate with me in those
difficult classes.
Though the academic experience at Fox was a great blessing, I believe the greater gift of Fox was the
intellectual challenge of faith and self. I had the pleasure of participating in a Life Group led by graduate
Cana Buckley, which centered around resisting the worldly “hustle” - the idea that one has to be as
productive as possible with their time - and discussed utilizing God’s design for rest and work. I was
challenged to look at my life from a Biblical perspective, and even evaluate how high on a pedestal I had
put my scholastic success. This Life Group taught me to focus on the valuable relationships around me,
and to rest well.
Next, the George Fox Honors Program revitalized my faith and taught me great
humility. Reading texts of the Early Church and of other ancient religions
caused me to realize how much my faith operated based on assumptions.
Some of these foundational assumptions were radically changed in the face
of Biblical analysis and early church tradition. The Socratic style discussion
put me at odds with fellow believers, in a way where we all grew. I
learned to greater respect my faith, and the interpretations of others.
The community at Fox is certainly irreplaceable, but as a student, I spent
plenty of time alone studying. I discovered Fox’s background noise helped
me hone in and focus; I found myself often at a table in the Maker Hub,
or reclined on a sofa in the EHS atrium, listening to the sounds of
whirring fans and chittering students. When I needed a break, I
would find a lawn chair on the quad and soak in the sunbeams,
watching students come and go. All of these places gave me
great perspective on how I am just a piece of the puzzle, a
cog in the machine. And what a beautiful fact that is.

One of the reasons I came to Fox was because “being known” was a core value I had growing up and I
was encouraged that Fox based their community on this promise. I believe that we are called to love
one another, I am not meant to be a judge but a friend and ally. I strive to make everyone feel seen and
heard. I believe being known is not only a promise I want to make on campus but an ideal I have for my
daily life. I want this ideal in life because when I feel seen on campus it makes me feel like I belong. It
gives me stability and confidence to live life with joy, knowing I am loved. During these past years at
Fox I have discovered that accepting and affirming others is key in building community.
I strive to impact the world in a way where everyone feels seen and heard. I have been an RA at Fox for
two years now and what I have learned is that building an environment to laugh together, have Dino
Chicken Nugget Nights, and literally fight over Stuart (our apartments unofficial/official mascot) is easy
when you all have respect for each other’s stories. While we acknowledge that we are all different, we
choose to celebrate those differences. I hope the people I meet and the friends I make, know what it is to
be appreciated and loved because that’s what being known means to me.
From my time at Fox I have discovered that in life, grades aren’t everything and how you did on a test
doesn’t matter. What matters is how you choose to walk through life, what type of
person you want to be and how your actions will show that. I think the best piece of
advice a professor gave me was that college will be hard and we will struggle, but that’s
why we came to college. I came to college to learn and grow from my experiences.
Throughout these last years, I have discovered a passion for building community and creating meaningful
relationships with others. I have found my core people where we laugh until we cry,
sing terribly in the car, and dance in the rain.
Lol, my go-to drink always changes but my favs are a small Cinnamon Twist
from Coffee Cottage or a Peppermint Candy Cane Latte with peppermint
syrup (because I’m a fru fru drink person) from Chapters. I’m always down
for a Chai Tea Latte and honestly, I will not lie, I might sell my soul for
a Bridge Cafe London Fog because they are literally my favorite thing on
earth right now.
I often find myself walking around campus throughout the quad, but
somewhere I’ll always be, is EHS. I really enjoy being in EHS, saying hi to
everyone and just sitting in professors offices, stealing snacks and talking
about life. I love that I have a building on campus that I can go to and know
almost everyone’s name. EHS is one of my favorite places at Fox and it
really is my second home.

For me, all research, teaching and learning should lead us to a deeper and richer prayer. My
research and teaching here at Fox focuses particularly on the novel and the role of story in
shaping how we understand ourselves and our world. As part of that, I’ve been particularly
amazed lately by the risks God takes in revealing himself through texts—through narratives of
his engagement with humans.
In Christian tradition, we are accustomed to thinking about the vulnerability of God the Son
in the Incarnation. The image of a newborn, nursing amid a cattle stall, is well-rehearsed and
even in its unexpected humility, such vulnerability is marked with the beauty, goodness, and
freshness of new life. But what is it for God to reveal himself with the vulnerability of an old
man at midnight, in the wisdom and frailty of experience—of loss, rejection, disappointment,
questionable choices, and failures? What is it for God to offer an unflinching look at himself
risking ridicule and rejection? What is it for God to open the book of his own life and ask
generation after generation “Do you love me? Will you be mine now that you know who I am
and what I’ve done? Can I be your god now that you know my story?”
Trusting others with our stories is not easy—most of us don’t share our stories
with others until we know those others are safe, until we know that we are loved
and valued. It is humbling and disconcerting even, that God not only trusts humans with his
story, but invites us to worship or reject him in and through that story.
My third-floor office in Minthorn is definitely my favorite place
on campus. The office is big, with two tall windows, a full wall
of bookcases, a comfy chair, and a view of the quad. I sometimes
come to work before 6am to write and find the quiet of those early
hours really lovely.

I am blessed to have had a great experience at Fox, and when I think of my experience being magnified,
I think of the small pieces, or the moments that, when magnified, reflect the whole. While many people
in the Fox community help in magnifying a positive experience, one who stands out was someone that I
was not expecting.
There is a current student at Fox who Is entering his senior year, and several years ago, in the summer
before his freshman year, he came up to my office looking for help in completing a form. While
explaining what he needed to do, we got caught up in conversation, with me being able to hear a
bit about his journey in coming to Fox. Every so often, this student will stop by, or send me a note,
even if he doesn’t have a question. He just wants to say hello and make sure he checks in on how I am
doing. In the hustle and bustle of academic life, this student takes the time to show that he cares. He is
delivering the Be Known promise. To me, this is an example of the moments and relationships that can
be magnified to reflect the whole. What a magnificent gift he gave me.
I grew up in a small town and came from a church, a school, and a life where I was a name, and not a
number. Moving on to college and beginning a career were really daunting steps to take in entering the
big world, and I was sure I would not be able to be known as well as I had been in that small community.
I am thankful to say that was not the case, and now, seven years after beginning my journey at Fox, that
still holds true.
Not to sound cliché, but I feel known as soon as I walk through the door. At work, my
colleagues and my intern team are supportive of me both in my career and in my
personal life. They know what I am going through, they jump in where they
can, and they not only know my story, but are willing to share their story
with me. I have laughed with colleagues, cried with them, and some of
the most transformational moments of my life have happened through my
community at Fox. To those I work with, and those I work for, I thank you
for making me and every student, staff, and faculty at Fox Be Known. What
a magnificent gift you gave me.
If I could walk through any area of campus, I would have to choose the
stairwell in EHS. Looking through the glass walls facing the quad
conveys a form of serenity, even in stressful times. On autumn
days when the sun is out and the quad is bright with trees of
many colors, it reminds me not only of God’s wonderful
creation in nature, but also that he created the opportunity
that I have at Fox to learn and grow. What a magnificent
gift God gave me.

I feel known at GFU because I have the pleasure of being placed at a front desk position where I get to be
the first one folks see when they approach our offices. I have the ability to help people to find their way and
to be the first to respond to their needs. I enjoy so much getting to know our students and the majors in the
departments that I get to work in. It is the best job I’ve ever had! Getting to meet all of these lovely people
and to be able to help them navigate through their time here is the joy of my career. Here at GFU, I am
not only allowed, but ENCOURAGED to get to know and get involved in the lives of these young people.
And, truth be told, it’s not just the students, but I also get to be a part of the lives of the wonderful people
that I get to work with as well. I so love a job that I am encouraged to do what is so ingrained in my soul
to do. I love meeting people and getting to know them at a level that they are comfortable with and being
involved with them even after they leave this place. I have the honor of still being in contact with so many of
the young folks here. To get to go to their weddings, the birth of their children, celebrate their continuing
education, to see the homes they buy, to pray for them as they serve others, to be a part of their lives beyond
being a student here. That speaks volumes for how much this means to me to ‘be known’ at GFU. I am a
huge “people person” and I get to engage in that part of me by working here – it’s the best part of my job.
I am so very touched by the other employees here and their spirit for the students here too. Watching our
faculty absolutely CARE for the students and to be so invested in their outcomes as well
as their overall well-being just moves my heart. When I see them interact with a student
(whether it’s one of theirs or not) when they need the help or encouragement – the faculty
and staff is always ready and willing to be that support. I love working in a place that
provides us the ability to be good humans to each other, to be able to treat people the way I would want to
be treated. I love witnessing these situations. We get to express God’s love to others by being “known” to
one another.
I find myself wandering on campus on my time off frequently. I walk a lot, and
I’ve walked around this campus often just wondering what memories are
being made here and day dreaming about the friendships and relationships
that this place provides for the students. I love taking the walks around the
campus to explore new areas and pathways and go into buildings to explore
the rich history that they hold. If the walls could talk!! When I worked in
Minthorn for so many years, I was given so many stories by folks who used
to live there back in the early years. Stories of a boyfriend climbing a ladder
to woo his best gal at her window on the second floor, or of the classes
they took in that building. I even heard of the PE classes that were held on
the dirt floor of the basement a VERY long time ago. These buildings
and spaces were the catalyst for so many relationships over the
years. Friendships that last a lifetime with hours of memories
to be had. Marriages that were brought together because of
these wonderful spaces and have lasted a lifetime and their
children and children’s children who have or now attend
because of the inviting times these folks shared. Those
are my daydreams when walking the campus of GFU
in the 21st century. If only the walls could talk.

“I got you.” This is a phrase my student Rachel would say when we were navigating the Amazon jungle
with our team. This reassuring answer to my requests represents a couple discoveries I’ve made at Fox.
One: My students teach and encourage me just as much as I teach and encourage them. The people at
GFU have such amazing hearts--they want to help people and make a difference in the world. They are
passionate about serving the Lord, and they know that this is their training ground. But the moments
when I get to really see them shine are the moments when things aren’t working out the way we
planned. I see them rise up, encourage each other, and work hard as a team.
Our Amazon research trip was such a moment. We didn’t even know that we were going to Perú until
the week before we left. Our well-laid plans to minister and do research in Nicaragua were canceled
due to political unrest there. And suddenly I found myself leading my team to a country I’d never been
to, with contacts I’ve never met before. The way they came together amazed me. “Can you translate
this?” “I got you.” “Can you make sure everyone has sunscreen?” “I got you.” “Can you learn how to teach
people to make a solar oven?” “I got you.”
Here, I see my students minister to each other--explaining challenging material, delivering a care
package, planning educational and self-care activities, and more. They minister to me through thankyou
cards, asking how I am, and active listening in class.
The second discovery I made at Fox is that God’s “got me.” I get to work at a place where my skills,
knowledge, and passions can come together to discover and serve God more. And I get to see how God
weaves all things together for the good of my students. The Perú trip was a good example of that. Even
though all of my plans had fallen through, it became clear that God had planned this trip all along--he
just didn’t tell us about it until the week before.
I get to discover God’s providence in the challenges of daily life. When I’m
stressed, God says “Cast all your anxiety on me.” When I’m not sure how I’ll
navigate all of the urgent demands on my time, God says “I will go before you
and prepare the way.” When I have an important decision to make, “I will
advise you and watch over you.” When I’m so tired I can barely see straight,
“Come to me…and I will give you rest.”
Whenever I have fear, need, confusion, doubt, or trail, God says “I got you.”
This is a message I want to pass on to my students.
A few places in Newberg I often find myself at include the prayer labyrinth
and walking path at North Valley Friends Church. Roger’s Landing also
has a beautiful view of the river which I frequently enjoy.

Coming from over 40 years of experience playing choral concerts and vocal recitals,
accompanying and coaching celebrities in the opera world and some local shining lights--
including GFU voice instructors Maggie Daane and Jill Soltero—and traveling the world for
Community Concerts Association with various artists--it is through a strong magnifying lens that
I look back to summer of 1980, the first of many summers I spent shirtless in cut-offs, shoveling
manure on a Newberg farm.
It was about twelve years later that I accompanied distinguished alumni Richard Zeller, later of
the Metropolitan Opera, performing for my first time in the brand new Bauman Auditorium,
with its impressive organ and world-class pianos! Even now, I still get that feeling of awe,
sitting with a hundred masked singers on the stage, with the lovely conductor and ‘Magician of
Music’ Dr. Danielle Warner pulling musical ‘rabbits’ from out behind our Covid protection.
These people are my best friends, whom I know already so well (without having ever seen their
mouths) by the sounds of their voices. These “my peeps” are the reason I am here.
I think it was God’s plan for me to come here—to be a learning experience in
living Faith—and to challenge my own long-growing cynicism of this world and
its doings. I know I’ve also been challenging to Dr. Dwayne Corbin and Kathy
Harris just by adjusting and learning the ropes! I am so glad to see the magnifying power of
God and His music work together in transforming lives—including mine—for
the better.
My favorite places in Newberg are Goodwill (what color on sale this
week?), Dairy Queen, Panda Express, Starbucks, Burgerville USA
(when I have time), McDonalds (when I don’t), Ace Hardware, and
driving under the trestle on upper Villa Road. I usually come here
via the country roads, and sometimes pass a certain all-too-familiar
manure-filled barn and its denizens! I visit antique stores, and count
the horses and barns as I fly past! I love Oregon Hazelnuts!
I treasure the Keurig coffee machine in the Music Office, and
appreciate and am empowered by the wonderful copy machine
there. My hidden gem would be the Collaborative Piano
Studio I share with my brilliant colleague Dr. Hana
Lim. I hope every singer will be able to come and
work with me there during our time here!

George Fox is an intentional and exceptionally welcoming place. It was my initial interactions with the broader community
of George Fox that first drew me to the university. When I was first on campus, Adam Puckett (Athletic Director) told me
he was looking for coaches who “love Jesus, want to pour into our athletes, and have a competitive fire to win.” I was looking
for those exact foundational values, and I have seen that at work every single day since joining the staff.
I feel known and “at home” amongst the athletic staff, administration, and the teams I have the privilege of working with each
day. My Athletic Director checks in regularly, grabs coffee with me, notices the nuances and details of what we’re doing…
that is a rare thing amongst athletic administrators, and it creates an energy and drive to excel within the whole department.
The teams are amazing - not just athletically but personally, and that is a credit to both the students themselves and the
great group of coaches John Smith has put together here. The genuine care and desire to learn that our student-athletes have
is, I would argue, not possible to match at any other institution in the country. They push each other to grow athletically,
spiritually, and academically each and every day, and that focus on personal development leads to excellent results in the
competitive sphere.
It’s very hard to pick only a few people who have magnified my experience here. Those that come to mind first are John
Smith, Adam Puckett, Adam Haldorson, and Gabe Haberly. I have the privilege of working with this group every day, and
each of these individuals pours into me personally rather than just on the track side of things. Adam Puckett goes out of
his way to make sure I have what I need to lead my groups well, attends key meets, and checks in regularly. John Smith
emphasizes family and spiritual development above all else, and I have learned so much from him on keeping first things first
and ordering priorities appropriately. At the same time, he enables me to do my thing when it comes to coaching distance
runners, and it is a lot of fun to work in an environment where your gifts are enabled and voice is heard.
I have learned more from Gabe Haberly and Adam Haldorson about track and field in two years than I did in the prior ten
years coaching anywhere else - they are phenomenally gifted coaches and mentors of their athletes. I have also taken up rock
climbing and backpacking thanks to those two. Gabe and I have been on some all-day hikes, and Adam and I climb at least
twice a week in Hadlock. Those times are where some of the best “work” gets done. I have learned that
reflecting on what is going well and what needs improvement happens best in a non-office setting.
Having people at Fox to bounce around ideas with and who regularly sharpen my skill set…
that magnifies my experience working here more than can be well-articulated.
A few of my favorite places around Newberg include; Chapters. Good coffee and good
ice cream. Two of the best things in one place. Handel’s in Sherwood. There is a theme
going here… if it involves ice cream, I’m usually in. My wife and I are frequent
visitors. Fulquartz Rd. Not great for hard workout runs, but awesome for seeing the
Cascade range on a clear day and getting in a softer-surface easy run.
Somewhere I often find myself on campus is Hadlock. I didn’t have such a place in
college, and it’s a great thing that George Fox has going for it. I try to get on the
rock climbing wall at least a few times a week. The track (surprise!) is another place.
The brand new track surface is amazing, and the Oregon sunsets as we finish practices
never get old to me. It’s a remarkable place to put in hard work.

What does it mean to be a people who are known for faithfulness? This year our pastoral team
used Hebrews 11 to lead our community in an exploration of faithfulness as seen in Scripture and
also in the many people throughout the history of the church who have sought to live their lives
faithfully for God.

I joined this club because I believe in
its mission. Stewards of Sustainability
seeks to educate and empower the
GFU campus with practical options in
order to be good stewards of this earth.
As our collective of students grows, we
intend to provide events, workshops,
and educational opportunities that
foster inspiring and challenging
conversation about how we respect the
earth that we have been given and the
people with which we share it.
Why did you join?
Mathematics is extremely meaningful
to me, and I wanted to be part of the
math major community.

This semester we worked in the community garden and donated produce to the bruin pantry. We
watched a documentary about the flawed recycling system and a documentary about environmentalism
and faith. As a club we organized a fundraiser to support #Teamseas, which removes 1lb of trash out of
oceans, rivers and beaches for each dollar raised. As a club we raised around $225 which removes around
225lbs of trash.

Why did you join?
I joined because I am passionate about health. I like that Sources of Strength has 8 aspects of
strength that makes up a person. It helps us know that we have good things in our lives.
How do you guys meet/what do you guys do?
We meet in person in Roberts. We play a game or host some kind of event. We then spend
some time sharing and learning about strength. Then we plan for how we are going to reach out
to others.
A fun memory this year!
We threw a self care night that was so much fun. We painted, colored and played games. There
was also tea and really good snacks!

Godspell Director’s Note
It has been 20 years since the George Fox Theatre produced its 2002 award winning production of Godspell. That year, the
Kennedy Center American College Theatre festival invited us to perform Godspell at its Regional Festival in Bellingham,
Washington. In order to fundraise for the trip, we also performed the show at the Winningstad Theatre in downtown
Portland.
While I arrived one year after that moment in George Fox theatre history, one of the judges from the 2002 production later
told me that the energy in Wood-Mar the night he saw the show was electric, filled with hope and reverence, as if he’d
entered a worship experience that unabashedly celebrated a community’s faith. What a great compliment, and what a great
vision for what theatre can do!
Godspell opened in New York City in 1976 and was heralded for setting the gospel in a contemporary urban landscape. The
show was quirky, clownlike, and yet profound. The show was updated for its 2012 Broadway revival to bring it into the 21st
century, but both its quirkiness and power remain. May you experience both the laughter and hope this musical has to offer
tonight.
Much has changed in the world since our 2002 production of Godspell, but the need for this story remains the same. We are
simply delighted to invite you back to Wood-Mar auditorium to experience this beautiful, prophetic, musical all over again.
Enjoy the journey,
Rhett Luedtke, Director

Friends,
Thank you for taking the time to read and journey with us.
This book isn’t just about us, it’s about you. Every ounce of content is
because of the relationships, activities, and environments you engage
with.
We hope this edition opens your eyes more to the community and
individuals around you.
We encourage you to continue to explore and dive into life with
purpose and intentionality.
May this prompt you to magnify the things that hold value and give
purpose, and put aside the rest.
Holding you in the light,
The Student Collective Team
