Please note that due to the withdrawal of the Retail Export Scheme by HMRC, we are unable to provide VAT refunds 

documentation for hand-carried exports. In order to qualify for a VAT refund, your lots must be exported by a shipper 

and valid exportation documentation must be provided.

Payment is required by Wednesday 30th of June by debit card, BACS, Worldpay and cash (subject to money laundering

PACKING, DELIVERY & SHIPPING 

Shipping can prove expensive so please ask us for a shipping quote before bidding. We aim to provide in-house packing 

where practical but high value and delicate items may well require a specialist. Overseas shipping is best provided by a 

shipper in order to access appropriate insurance cover. We can recommend local carriers, UK domestic carriers and

Chancery of Ireland; Latin and

Proem reciting that virtuous men 

should be rewarded not only on 

account of their own merits, but 

also that their progeny should be 

honoured and extolled 

Recites that although the family 

have been armigerous, as can be 

shown from the registers of arms, 

the form of their arms is uncertain, 

as is whether they bore them in 

accordance with the laws of arms; 

but being unwilling to prejudice 

any gentleman or nobleman, 

in accordance with Nicholas’s 

petition and by virtue of the letters 

patent granted to Butler, he grants 

the arms, depicted in the margin:

These arms would now be 

blazoned Argent a saltire between 

four boar’s heads erased gules 

armed or/argent, on a chief or 

three bendlets vair; on a torse 

argent and azure a boar’s head 

couped gules membered argent, 

seated on five peacock feathers 

proper, mantelled gules and 

argent buttoned or. The torse is 

painted in different colours from 

the blazon.

Ink and colour on parchment, 

318 x 575 mm; in the initial letter 

an image of Butler, wearing 

a gold crown, with a fur-lined 

coat beneath a tabard with the 

quartered arms of England 

and France, and pointing with 

a white wand of office towards 

the depiction of the arms; in the 

top border the lilies of France 

flanking a crowned garter 

encircling a Tudor rose; the top 

and right margins decorated 

with carnations, forget-me-nots,

pansies, roses, thistles and 

strawberries; the left margin 

shows the full achievement of the 

arms as granted, surmounting a 

staff resembling a narwhal’s tusk 

arising from red and blue mantling 

against a floral background. 

Tags for two seals [Butler’s seal 

of office and his personal seal], 

neither present, but with the lower 

half of a turned wooden skippet 

still attached to the smaller tag. 

This must be one of the earliest 

surviving grants issued by Ulster 

after the establishment of his 

office two years earlier in 1552. 

Although a letter O (for omnibus) 

is called for, the initial letter of 

this grant is clearly a T. Grants 

by the herald Thomas Hawley 

(d1557, see ODNB), who like 

Bartholomew Butler may have 

been a Scot (for example British 

Library Add. MS 37687 of 5 April 

1556, and Guildhall Library MS 

21734 of 15 Oct 1556), show him 

crowned, bearded and identically 

attired to Butler in this grant. 

That, and the lack of any Irish 

symbolism such as a harp (which 

had clearly emerged by 1604 – 

see the frontispiece to National 

Library of Ireland GO MS 66) may 

suggest that at this early date no 

iconography specific to Ireland 

had emerged, and that in the 

years immediately following its 

establishment the office of Ulster 

King employed as a template 

for its own productions grants 

issued by Thomas Hawley as 

Clarenceux.

The scene is taken from a 

drawing that the English 

sculptor and draftsman, John 

Flaxman(1755–1826), made to 

illustrate the passages of Homer’s 

Iliad, a commission proposed 

to him in 1791 by Georgiana 

Hare-Naylor while he was living 

in Rome. Here is represented a 

rare episode, with Polydamas, a 

character from Greek mythology 

soothsayer, adviser and valiant 

warrior, friend and lieutenant of 

Hector, who fought in the Trojan 

War and who, in the twelfth book 

of the Iliad, advises Hector not 

to cross a dangerous moat that 

was part of the defence at the 

Achaean port and also advises 

Hector not to continue the siege. 

Hector will not listen to him and 

will face death at the hands of 

Achilles (Homer Iliad 12.60). 

‘’Then verily Polydamus drew 

nigh to Hector, and spake, saying: 

“Hector, and ye other leaders of 

the Trojans and allies, it is but 

folly that we seek to drive across 

the trench our swift horses; hard 

in sooth is it to cross, for sharp 

stakes are set in it, and close 

anigh them is the wall of the 

Achaeans.’’ Homer - Iliad 12.60

John Flaxman, sculptor and 

draftsman, a leading proponent 

of English neoclassicism, created 

34 drawings for Homer’s Iliad 

in Rome in 1793, which were 

engraved on copper for the first 

time in Rome by Tommaso Piroli 

in 1793 (“L’Iliade et the Odyssée 

d’Homère gravéepar Thomas 

Piroli d’après les desseins 

composés par John Flaxman. 94 

gravures “, Francesco Romero 

publisher, Rome, 1793). The 

meeting Flaxman and Piroli was 

a happy union, sealed by a public 

success that also provoked real 

acts of editorial piracy. “The 

reprints followed one another 

in various original editions or 

copies of the branches in different 

European cities, attesting to 

the vast success achieved from 

Flaxman’s inventions masterfully 

translated and propagated with 

the burin of Piroli. Two years later, 

the plates for “The Iliad” were 

republished in London. In 1805, 

publishers Longman, Hurst, Rees 

and Orme printed new editions of 

both series, including eleven extra 

illustrations commissioned from 

Flaxman (five for “The Iliad” and 

six for “The Odyssey”). 

The style of the ivory inlay 

perfectly reflects the spirit of 

Flaxman’s engraving, the figures 

in fact retain their taste for graffiti, 

which was an absolute novelty 

at the time. Flaxman avoided the 

background landscape, setting 

and detail, focusing on figures 

rendered with pure outlines. It has 

long been known that Flaxman 

drew on and synthesized a 

wide variety of visual sources in 

the development of his outline 

illustrations, combining classical 

figuration from “Etruscan” reliefs, 

sculptures, engravings and vases 

with forms derived from medieval 

and early Renaissance sources, 

life studies and observational 

sketches of daily Italian scenes 

and characters. Flaxman’s style 

of illustration has been discussed 

and celebrated by a multitude 

of critics across Europe and has 

had a demonstrable influence 

on artists such as Ingres, Goya 

and Blake. The cabinet is also 

enriched with other ivory inlays, 

representing divinities and 

allegories, including the allegory 

of Hope and Faith.

Inscribed verso ‘This cartoon 

by Max Beerbohm was drawn 

for a projected wall-painting for 

his villa at Rapallo, which was 

never executed. It was given by 

him to his friend and biographer 

(Jack) Bohun Lynch, to whom 

it is inscribed…… p……. It was 

purchased in from his estate in 

1947 by Scribners…. Several of 

the identifications were supplied 

by Sir Edward Marsh’, KCVO 

CB CMG a British translator and 

friend to Rupert Brooke. The work 

was intended as the frieze for 

the dining Room in his and Lady 

Beerbohm’s villa, to where they 

had moved in 1910. Beerbohm 

had married his wife, the 

American actress Florence Kahn, 

in the same year. 

The work was purchased from 

Scribners in New York in c 1950 , 

by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, OM KBE. 

And was sold by his Estate.

After the outbreak of WWII, Hepworth and Nicholson 

moved down to Cornwall at the invitation of Adrian 

Stokes and Margaret Mellis. With triplets to look after, 

materials becoming scare and space limited, Hepworth 

found that her opportunities for carving were becoming 

fewer and thus in the earliest part of her time in Cornwall, 

she ‘could only draw at night and make a few plaster 

maquettes’. However, the possibilities of drawing soon 

became apparent to her and she found that they could 

be produced relatively quickly and provided a useful 

source of income during the war years, and virtually all 

her friends and collectors acquired examples, including 

Margaret Gardiner, Cyril Reddihough, Leslie Martin and 

Alastair Morton. Once the privations of the war began to 

lift, Hepworth found that drawing was now solidly established 

as a key element of her work, and several themes 

began to emerge from this corpus. Although always 

described by the artist as drawings, the careful building 

up and working of the base surface, often gesso, the 

coloured washes and painted details make them more 

than simply drawings. The conscious lack of idealization 

in the pose of the subject is typical for Hepworth at this 

time, and indeed she tried not to use professional models, 

preferring people such as dancers, whose movements 

appealed to her.
