Cities Living with Rural Values National Student Idea
Project Competition (Turkey)
When we say “rural” or “village” as most of us prefer
to use it, a common image comes to mind for
almost all of us. This is usually the image of a farming
community. This image is partially correct. In
addition to the fact of dealing with agriculture, the
community in question also has other social and
economic structures.
In the process of changing the countryside, economic
data and resources come to the fore. Everything
in question cannot be thought of independently of
communities, society, and local culture. In addition,
the geographical and cultural components of the
countryside should be considered together. In this
sense, the phenomenon of rural development has
an important place in the country’s economy, especially
in terms of the level of development.
The pursuit of quality and character in the design,
which aims at the motivation of the citizens, ensures
the realization of qualified spaces and social
sharing in sub-scales.
In the context in which local values are primarily involved,
character areas in the district and intervention
areas covering these areas were determined
by evaluating together with the natural and historical
environment.
While determining the Character Areas, the thresholds
determined for Lüleburgaz were taken into
consideration. Based on the natural and artificial
environment in the region, 5 main thresholds have
been determined. These; Geographical, Ecological,
Economic, Social and Infrastructure. These thresholds
were taken as a basis to see the distinctive potentials
in the rural structure of Lüleburgaz.

PARTICIPATION SQUARE
PHASE I
MEETING SQUARE
PHASE II
A design proposal has been developed in Area 3, located in İzmir,
Konak District, Pazaryeri Neighborhood, by establishing the relationship
between neighborhood identity, participatory design and
paint. The area, which has an important historical background, is
a part of the Izmir History Route at the upper scale and is defined
by the squares around it. The backbone of the design is the relationship
of the mentioned regions with each other and with the
neighborhood. The design proposal was designed with the title
of “Participation, Design and Play” in line with this purpose. The
design includes suggestions under the titles of physical, social and
public. Damage analysis of all structures in the area was carried
out within the framework of the physical approach. The History
Route in the area was painted as a trace to the road and its continuity
with the surroundings of the project area was ensured. The
pedestrian route, which is added to the route, creates an alternative
route by integrating the squares.
The completion of the painting works, which is the basic element
of the spatial design, in stages, together with the locals, was designed
as a model proposal within the scope of the project. In
the first phase, the square in front of the UNESCO building of
the Izmir Historical Port City Site Presidency was designed as a
meeting point where the people of the neighborhood can share
their views and cultural activities. In this context, the idle wall in
the square will be painted with washable white paint and used as
an area where the residents of the neighborhood can write their
ideas and problems during the day, where stands can be set up,
and as an open-air cinema in the evenings. In the second stage, it
is envisaged to make arrangements for the use of children in the
square where Altınordu Sports Club Memorial House and its field
are located. In the third stage, Pazaryeri Square was designed as
a meeting and gathering area for the people of the neighborhood
due to its feature of being a memorable holiday place. Accessible
public spaces that can be used equally by everyone during and
after the transformation processes of squares and streets will become
the heart of daily life in Pazaryeri Neighborhood.

By creating breathing points that will reduce the density of the area starting from the
Köprübaşı region, which is old Antakya, it is aimed to design qualified common areas
where the citizens can coexist at these points. Public spaces to perceive the spirit of
the city; more inclusive and equitable environments should be created by combining
the experiences of different communities with culture, policies and design. The multilayered
historical city identity of Antakya has been mixed with the new texture over
time, its influence has weakened and the legibility of the city has decreased. Despite
this, every Antakyan has the consciousness of these layers with the narratives and
stories that live with them. However, due to the lack of spatial narratives, the strong
identity of the city with its various layers and roots is erased from memory.
Remembering the layers that make up the urban identity is supported by Sigmund Freud’s
concept of the ‘Wunderblock effect’. According to this concept, a person refreshes
his memory while discovering new things, leaves small references to remember the
forgotten experiences and protects them, one day he remembers everything with
those nuances. In Antakya, where many ethnic origins have lived together throughout
its history, it is necessary to remember the bond that brings the citizens together under
the same roof, to re-experience the urban narratives and to refresh the memory when
they are together.
The idea of people being together formed first societies and then cities since ancient
times. In order to create unity and experiences in cities, openings, that is, spaces where
needed. Therefore, it belongs to the houses of Antakya, which is a strong image of the
city; Its courtyards, which are called ‘Havuş’ with their social foundations that unite and
bring together, were handled on the urban scale, inspired the project and the Köprübaşı
City Havuş was proposed. Being together in a carrot, refreshing the memory with the
Wunderblock effect during new experiences and discoveries; It is aimed to remember
the old and then forgotten again.
In the historical center of Antakya, it is aimed to increase the pedestrian-oriented
experience areas and to ensure circulation, instead of the
transportation stratification that puts vehicle circulation in the foreground.
The main transportation line; It is aimed to be built by sharing
the density of the Yeloğlu and Yavuz Sultan Selim bridges in a way that
will reduce the burden of the Atatürk Bridge.

Water Management
Natural and artificial solutions have been developed based on their applicability in private and public areas in
order to ensure the continuity of the water cycle in nature on a city basis, to create self-sufficient ecological
systems and to protect them from periodic river/land floods. In this direction, it has been proposed to collect,
filter, transmit and reuse rainwater through channels using permeable materials from roof and floor surfaces.
Bio-ditch
In areas open to vehicular traffic, planting has been done in bio-ditches in order to separate the vehicular
and pedestrian and bicycle paths. With this method, self-sufficient tree and shrub species will not require
maintenance and will not need extra water, thanks to conscious rain and runoff water management.
Use of Renewable Energy
It has been suggested to obtain biogas from the water hyacinth species invading the Orontes River in the
region, to use wind energy to benefit from the prevailing winds in Antakya, and to use solar energy with solar
panels placed at stops and sometimes in modules.
Pollenization and Discovery Gardens
Refreshing the memory of new discoveries with the Wunderblock concept has been constructed over the
pollenization and discovery gardens located along the river bank. Pollenization gardens designed considering
the current solar and wind potential of the city and the density of circulation in the city, attracting species
such as butterflies, bees and birds to the area with local plant species selected to create a fragrant and
seasonal color palette, while supporting biodiversity and promoting nature awareness with modules. and
creates a sense of belonging, as well as supporting economic development by functioning as an inner-city
eco-tourism area.
River Water Cleaning
In order to clean the water of the Asi River and to ensure its continuity, it is aimed to plant aquatic species on
the lateral walls without changing the physical structure of the river channel, taking into account the flood
level and points of the river. It was observed that plant species developed on the existing canal walls and by
supporting this development, the staging strategy was targeted.

Furnitur Furniture Design Competition (International)
Origami is a system of industrial felt-covered polycarbonate
panels. All of the plastics used in the
panel are designed as recyclable. The reason for
this preference is that we think that design plays
an ecological, economic and social role in the process
of fixing the global temperature increase to
1.5 degrees in 2030. Polycarbonate and industrial
felt materials used in the panel were preferred due
to both insulation and lightness. Thanks to its lightness,
it offers easy installation and use. Even if the
space you want to use as a workspace changes, Origami
panels are portable and paritic in form; It was
designed to assist in creating a new space.
Origami is designed to allow the user to create
space within the space.

Space in Space
During the COVID-19 pandemic, most of us started
spending more time than usual at home. This time is also
an opportunity to get to know our new working space,
our home. The points that we don’t normally care about
in the house, now become our new activity areas. We
started laughing, crying, sleeping and working in the
same place. Not only home and work, but also our space
and feelings began to mix.
The reason I use blue tones in my work comes from the
phrase “feeling blue”. There are sadness and stress on
the news, but we should continue to live, it is inevitable
to have the excitement of this.
While working during the day, we discover different
points at home our personal space. Our balcony, become
the most important place in the house. We include it in
our field of work. The staircase we use to go to our room
becomes a space where we can sit and think.
After the pandemic, I think that our workspace will be
included in the space where I spend our daily life. I wonder
if the elimination of the big offices will actually free
us and choose our own workplace. In my work, I tried to
explain how we use every point of the place and how our
emotions get mixed up.
[ VACCINESIBLE ]
In our globalizing world, the most discussed issues about
cities are accessibility and sustainability. Today, these discussions
included in the ideas about the pandemic and
post-pandemic world. In a situation where even going out
is prohibited, we cannot get people to a place where they
feel insecure. We need easy accessibility and transportation,
familiar places because people need to recognise
things when they are in danger. In Turkey, centres are the
easiest places for priority groups to come.
[VACCINESIBLE] has a single floor and 7 areas. The characteristics
of these areas may change according to need.
The module has been designed like a puzzle to use the
entire space efficiently. The system includes an Info Point
that provides information about the pandemic and the
vaccine, hygiene-oriented smart systems, laboratories,
vaccination areas, and the core area of the vaccines.

Lüleburgaz is located on the most fertile agricultural lands of Trakya and surrounded by
rivers. It contains 1st class agricultural lands with rich fauna and suitable for polyculture
agriculture. On the other hand, irrigated farming lands are limited. 83.4% of the total
surface area is arable land. Fallow dry farming is practised in 92% of district lands and
irrigated farming is practised in 8%. 2.4% of the surface area is forest and 8% is pasture.

“TOURISM”
Istanbul, with its strategic location on the Bosphorus peninsula
between the Balkans and Anatolia, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean,
has been associated with important political, religious
and artistic events for over 2000 years, and tourism has socio-economic
effects on this issue. Sectorally, tourism is a driving force in
the economic and social development of cities. While the cities
come alive with the visitors, on the other hand, with the effect of
unbalanced and unplanned growth, it can damage the natural and
cultural structures of the cities.
GOAL:
To become a city that adopts the principles of the green economy
(growth) and green tourism, where local values both spatially
and socially, taking into account the protection-use balance,
strengthening their mutual relationship with tourism, providing
social justice and spatial sustainability.

position:
The school is in a binding position between the old quarter of Houthaven
and the newly established settlement. The school’s garden should consider
this strategic location as a functional public space.
It is a fact that public spaces have started to gain value today, which is
changing in terms of urban design and architecture. People need places
where they can spend time and feel “healthy and safe” at the same time.
The idea of the building is the creation of an only volume for a multifunction
space which allows the relationship between the different activities developed
inside and outside.
Open courtyards which reinforce this relationship between the game and
the learning between the inside and the outside of the playschool. they are
the main link between these two environments.
This solid form of school design has come from “childhood
games”. When we look at how much it looks like
a “solid” or “rough” structure. But aren’t the legos we
played as children as solid and rough? We shape them
with our imagination.
The purpose of this school design is to create an area
where children can shape their dreams. The exterior
and interior of the building depend on different places.
All of the tall windows are a door to reach the garden.
Large spaces on the floors are designed for children to
play.
space & user:
The complexity of the transactions between person and environment
needs to be understood with a special focus on children’s use and experiences
of the outdoor spaces in a neighbourhood. We should think
about children’s independent active mobility as an ongoing transaction
with the surrounding environment, continuously shifting between transport
and play.
The concepts are designed for a child perspective to highlight dimensions
in the planning, design and management of outdoor spaces that
can support children’s independent active mobility.

accelerating the development of the whole area of design
in various fields. It is proposed to identify the core of the
campus, to make the structure of the university more readable,
recognizable, to increase the density of buildings and the effectiveness
of its use.
Project feasibility
The creation of new areas will allow to place additional educational
spaces of a new type with a high level of digitalization,
convenient for various educational forms, communication and
cooperation. In addition, it is necessary to develop a commercial
function within the boundaries of the territory under consideration.
Open and accessible structure of the territory, the development
of the left bank of the Angara river are proposed. The generated
