MODULAR SYSTEMS FROM FIELD TO ROOF As Julian Thurbin, MD of Wallbarn explains, the time from when the materials arrive on site, through to installation, is precious. Below, he points out some of the key considerations to make, and explains how Wallbarn works to ensure its M-Tray modular system makes things easy on projects. When specifying green roofs, it’s easy to forget that they are living, breathing mini eco-systems that require special consideration to ensure they arrive on site in pristine condition and are installed as quickly as possible to deliver a successful outcome. Given they are the only living element of a new-build or retrofit building project, we don’t feel it is unreasonable that the proverbial red carpet be rolled out for their arrival on site, with all involved in accepting the delivery, temporarily storing and then installing the system, made fully aware of its arrival and the applicable window of installation time. This is vital to prevent the plants ‘steaming’ – where enzymes, naturally occurring in the plants, heat up and break down the leaves, causing irreversible damage to the green roof and wreaking havoc with a project. We always advise that any green roof delivery should not remain stacked or rolled for more than 48 hours, which for Wallbarn and our M-Tray modular system is rarely a problem given we can have our UK designed, developed and grown system from field to roof within just 24 hours. This has a number of advantages as the demand for green infrastructure grows, not least that plants arrive on site in pristine condition, giving the green roof the best start possible. Quick delivery also means that late changes to a building design to incorporate a green roof can, if required, be achieved with M-Tray.
