The Habitat Around You<br />

Habitat restoration sounds like someth<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

is done by governments <strong>in</strong> national parks, but<br />

<strong>in</strong> reality it can take many <strong>for</strong>ms. <strong>Native</strong> plants<br />

can turn backyards <strong>and</strong> neighborhood parks <strong>in</strong>to<br />

natural habitats that attract <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong> birds <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r wildlife.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Caribbean</strong>, l<strong>and</strong> is precious—particularly<br />

<strong>the</strong> coastal areas where so many of us<br />

live. Restor<strong>in</strong>g native habitat with<strong>in</strong> our<br />

neighborhoods allows us to share <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> with<br />

native plants <strong>and</strong> animals. Of course, it doesn’t<br />

just benefit <strong>the</strong> birds. <strong>Native</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scap<strong>in</strong>g makes<br />

neighborhoods more beautiful <strong>and</strong> keeps us <strong>in</strong><br />

touch with <strong>Caribbean</strong> traditions.
